This study aimed to evaluate the impact of conventional (pressing extraction [PSE], solvent extraction [STE]), and non-conventional (microwave-assisted solvent extraction [MSE], subcritical fluid extraction [SBFE], supercritical fluid extraction [SPFE]) techniques on the quality of pecan oil using foodomics. The results indicated that MSE, STE, and SBFE yielded higher oil quantities. SPFE selectively extracted free fatty acids, leading to a higher acid value. MSE-derived oil exhibited the highest oxidative stability index. A total of 844 lipid molecules were identified, with glycerolipids and glycerophospholipids as the predominant classes. MSE and SBFE showed superior efficiency over conventional methods for the extraction of glycerophospholipids and saccharolipids. Additionally, 48 volatile compounds were identified, predominantly aldehydes and esters, with seven recognized as key aroma contributors. Dimethyl trisulfide had the most significant impact on the overall aroma. These findings offer a theoretical foundation for the efficient and sustainable production of pecan oil.

The aqueous enzymatic method is a form of green oil extraction technology with limited industrial application, owing to the need for the demulsification of the oil body intermediate product. Existing demulsification methods have problems, including low demulsification rates and high costs, such that new methods are needed. The free fatty acids produced by lipid hydrolysis can affect the stability of peanut oil body (POB) at a certain concentration. After screening even-carbon fatty acids with carbon chain lengths below ten, caproic acid was selected for the demulsification of POB using response surface methodology and a Box–Behnken design. Under the optimal conditions (caproic acid concentration, 0.22%; solid-to-liquid ratio, 1:4.7 (w/v); time, 61 min; and temperature, 79 °C), a demulsification rate of 97.87% was achieved. Caproic acid not only adjusted the reaction system pH to cause the aggregation of the POB interfacial proteins, but also decreased the interfacial tension and viscoelasticity of the interfacial film with an increasing caproic acid concentration to realize POB demulsification. Compared to pressed oil and soxhlet-extracted oil, the acid value and peroxide value of the caproic acid demulsified oil were increased, while the unsaturated fatty acid content and oxidation induction time were decreased. However, the tocopherol and tocotrienol contents were higher than those of the soxhlet-extracted oil. This study provides a new method for the demulsification of POB.

BACKGROUND Cresol is an important industrial raw material, which is mainly derived from lignocellulosic biomass. High-purity creosol can significantly improve the quality of its downstream product. The extraction of creosol with ultra-high purity (>99.5%) and low cost has attracted extensive attention in recent years. A new and simple green heterogeneous extraction technology for separating ultra-high-purity creosol is proposed in this paper. RESULTS When a certain amount of creosol is gradually dripped into Ca 2+ solution, the chemicals in three reaction stages are successively monitored by in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The molar ratio of creosol and Ca 2+ in the end-product of this reaction reaches four. Three different chemical bonds in three reaction stages are successively monitored: ion bond, coordination bond formed by ionic compound, and coordination bond formed by creosol molecule. This collected end-product can be decomposed easily. The vapors released in this decomposed process is determined to be high-purity creosol. Meanwhile, the molar ratio of creosol to Ca 2+ in the residual solid after decomposition of the end-product reduces to two. CONCLUSION Based on the reaction mechanism between Ca 2+ and creosol, a new route for the separation and purification of creosol was proposed in this study. The creosol extraction rate reached 91.5% when excessive Ca 2+ solution was added to the creosol solution. The purity of creosol reaches up to 99.7% when the end-product of the reaction between Ca 2+ and creosol is decomposed at 170 °C. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Plants serve as reservoirs of bioactive compounds endowed by nature, rendering them promising subjects for investigating chemical diversity. Despite their potential, much remains untapped, whether in standardized extracts or isolated pure compounds. This unexplored terrain has paved the way for significant discoveries in pharmaceuticals. Notably, research has delved into the medicinal properties ofMallotus philippensis, a prominent plant in South Asia. Employing meticulous extraction techniques such as maceration, the fruit of this plant underwent initial antimicrobial screening, revealing encouraging results. Subsequent fractionation of the plant’s extracts via liquid–liquid extractions, utilizing dichloromethane and absolute ethanol, facilitated further analysis. Evaluating these fractions for antibacterial activity demonstrated efficacy against various pathogenic microorganisms, particularlyPseudomonas aeruginosaandEscherichia coli, notably by the ethanolic and dichloromethane extracts. Furthermore, a comprehensive phytochemical analysis unveiled the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, glycosides, phenols, and tannins. An assessment of the extracts’ antioxidant potential via the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay showcased significant activity, with a radical scavenging rate of 97%. This underscores the significance of utilizing fruit remnants, which are often rich in valuable chemical constituents yet commonly discarded, thereby adding value to both the species and the environment. Further investigation focused on the composition ofMallotus philippensisfruit, encompassing volatile and non-volatile metabolites through HPLC-MS analysis. Additionally, this study introduced the application of ionic liquid-loaded polysulfone microcapsules to enrich target constituents from crude extracts. An exploration of the key separation conditions, results, and recycling performance of these microcapsules provided insights for future research endeavors. Overall, this comprehensive study ofMallotus philippensisfruit extracts establishes a foundation for the ongoing exploration and development of this medicinal plant.

A micelle-mediated extraction technique, i.e. ionic liquid-based microwave-assisted extraction (ILs-MAE) technique has been developed for the effective extraction of podophyllotoxin from three Chinese medicinal plants. Several operating parameters were successively optimized by single-factor and L9 (34) orthogonal array experiments. 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([bmim][BF4]), 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([demim][BF4]) and 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([amim][BF4]) were selected as the optimal surfactants for Dysosma versipellis, Sinopodophyllum hexandrum and Diphylleia sinensis, respectively. Compared with other extraction techniques, such as ionic liquids-based maceration extraction (ILs-ME), heat extraction (ILs-HE) and ultrasound-assisted extraction (ILs-UAE), the ILs-MAE technique not only took a shorter time but also afforded a higher extraction rate of podophyllotoxin from the herbs. Reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography was employed for the analysis of podophyllotoxin. The results showed that the linearity for analyzing podophyllotoxin in all three herbs was in the concentration range of 0.005–0.4 mg mL−1 with the correlation coefficient between 0.9993 and 0.9996. LODs were 2.05–2.58 μg mL−1 and RSDs of inter-day stability were less than 5.8%. Repeatability and intermediate precision were separately lower than 3.3% and 6.3%. The recoveries for podophyllotoxin extracted with the ILs-MAE technique were in the range of 97.1–102% and all RSDs were lower than 3.0%. Furthermore, the mechanism of ILs-MAE was preliminarily studied by means of kinetic mechanism, surface structures and chemical compositions of samples before and after different extraction techniques. On the basis of the destruction of herb surface microstructures and high solubility of ILs, the ILs-MAE technique eventually got the maximum yield value.

A method of effervescent-assisted dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction based on the solidification of a floating organic droplet is reported. This approach was used to measure the fungicides myclobutanil, tebuconazole and epoxiconazole in vinegar and juice. Acidic vinegar and juice reacted with the carbonate to produce effervescence in situ, which then promoted contact of the sample with the extraction solvent. The 1-dodecanol extraction solvent helped solidify the floating organic droplets and could be fully dispersed by effervescence. The extraction solvent, salt, carbonate, and extraction time were optimised. The optimal conditions were 200 μL of 1-dodecanol, 100 mg of sodium chloride, 50 mg of sodium bicarbonate, and 30 s of extraction time. The proposed method has good linearity between 10 and 1000 ng mL−1. Recoveries were between 70.4% and 103.1% in different vinegar and juice samples. This method was successfully used to measure fungicides in vinegar and juice. This system is simple, fast and environmentally friendly.

Simple SummaryFor the first time, this study investigated the extraction of bioactive substances with different polarities from immature honey pomelo fruit (IPF), a by-product of pomelo planting processing that causes resource waste and environmental pollution, using novel continuous phase transition extraction technology (CPTE). The results showed that CPTE was suitable for extracting essential oil, naringin, and pectin in sequence according to their polarities. The naringin extraction process was optimized by the response surface methodology, resulting in an extract ratio up to 99.47%. Moreover, the pectin extracted from IPF by CPTE showed better quality compared to commercial counterparts, as evidenced by lower protein and ash contents and higher white value. Together, these results suggested that CPTE could be a promising technology to improve the application value of IPF. For instance, the extracted bioactive components can be utilized as nutraceutical food ingredients. The scientific insights from this study will contribute to the development of functional food ingredients and comprehensive utilization of farming by-products.AbstractThe immature honey pomelo fruit (IPF) is a huge agro-industrial by-product generated during pomelo planting. Although IPF is rich in nutrients, more than 95% of IPF is discarded annually, which causes resource waste and a serious environmental problem. Here, we report a novel continuous phase transition extraction technology (CPTE) to improve the comprehensive utilization of IPF by sequentially generating high value products and solve pollution problems related to their disposal. First, essential oil was successively extracted by CPTE at a yield of 1.12 ± 0.36%, in which 43 species were identified. Second, naringin extraction parameters were optimized using the response surface methodology (RSM), resulting in a maximum extraction rate of 99.47 ± 0.15%. Finally, pectin was extracted at a yield of 20.23 ± 0.66%, which is similar to the contents of commercial pectin. In conclusion, this study suggested that IPF was an excellent potential substrate for the production of value-added components by CPTE.Keywords:immature pomelo fruit;sequential extraction;value-added compounds;continuous phase transition extraction under low temperature

The ethyl acetate, ethanol and water extracts of different organs (flowers, leaves, stems and roots) of wormwood ( Artemisia absinthium L.) were investigated to examine nematicidal and antifungal activities in an effort to promote future agricultural applications of the wormwood and its potential as an industrial crop. The results showed that highest concentration of total thiophene content (TTC), as well as nematicidal and antifungal activities were found in ethyl acetate extract of roots. TTC and biological activities were highly correlated, indicating that thiophenes played an important role in nematicidal and antifungal activities. Furthermore, four extraction techniques (Maceration, Soxhlet extraction, Supercritical fluid extraction and Ultrasound-assisted extraction) were compared by evaluating the yield of thiophenes. Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) appeared to be the best method for extracting thiophenes with the highest TTC and superior activities. In addition, eight thiophenes ( 1 – 8 ) including two new compounds ( 1 and 2 ) were isolated from the SFE extract by the bioassay-guided method. All thiophenes showed potent nematicidal activities. In particular, 1 – 4 (50% lethal concentration (LC 50 ) values of 2.69, 4.17, 6.13 and 7.65 mg/L, respectively) were more effective than commercial nematicide abamectin (LC 50 , 9.47 mg/L). Also, these thiophenes showed antifungal activities against four soil-borne fungi at different degrees, especially for compounds 1 and 2 which exhibited noticeable antifungal effects (minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ranging from 8–16 mg/L). Findings of this work suggest that wormwood root and its thiophenes could be used in nematicide and fungicide agent industry.

Castor ( Ricinus communis L.) meal, a by-product of castor oil production, is a high-quality protein source. Unfortunately, the toxic substance limits its application. Herein, a novel continuous phase transition extraction (CPTE) technology at pilot scale was explored for castor meal detoxification. The detoxification conditions were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) as: treatment time of 3 h, extraction pressure of 0.16 MPa and temperature of 84.8°C. And the removal rate of allergens, hemagglutinin, and ricin reached 79.2 %, 99.8 % and 99.0 %, respectively. The protein content of castor meal increased from 38.4% to 39.0%. The nontoxicity nature of the treated caster meal was verified via an acute toxicity tests where the mean lethal dose was >5000 mg/kg body weight. Overall, CPTE offers a novel and efficient tool for castor meal detoxification, with the superiority of non-nutrient loss, it improved the application value of castor meal and reduced the risk of environmental pollution.

A novel method has been developed for the analysis of zearalenone in maize products by vortex-assisted ionic-liquid-based dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction combined with HPLC and fluorescence detection. Maize samples were extracted with methanol/water (80:20, v/v) and the extraction solution was then used as the dispersive solvent in the microextraction procedure. The analyte was rapidly transmitted to a small volume of ionic liquid and was determined by HPLC. Various parameters affecting the recovery of the mycotoxin were investigated, such as the type and volume of the extraction solvent, the type and volume of the dispersive solvent, the pH of the aqueous phase, the salt addition, and the time of vortex and centrifugation. Under the optimal experimental conditions, a good linearity of the analyte was obtained in the range of 1.0–1000.0 μg/L with the correlation coefficient of 0.9998. The limit of detection (S/N = 3) and quantification (S/N = 10) were 0.3 and 1.0 μg/kg, and the mean recoveries ranged from 83.5 to 94.9%, with a relative standard deviation less than 5.0%. The proposed method was demonstrated to be simple, cheap, quick, and highly selective and was successfully applied to the determination of zearalenone in maize products.

A novel aqueous micellar two-phase system (AMTPS) formed by two new types of PEG-based hydrophobic (acted as “cationic surfactant” or “nonionic surfactant”) and hydrophilic deep eutectic solvents (DESs) was first established. Three typical representative pigments, methylene blue (MB), Sudan III (Su), and sunset yellow FCF (SY) with diverse charge and hydrophobicity, were selected as the target to evaluate the possibility of the novel DES/DES-based AMTPS as a green extraction technology for partitioning various substances. The constitutions of AMTPS were systematically studied, including the effects of hydrophobic and hydrophilic DES types, molar ratio of choline chloride/glycerol, and molecular weights of PEG. After investigation, the DES/DES-based AMTPS was prepared with [N8881]Cl/PEG400 as hydrophobic DES and Ch/G (molar ratio 1:1) as hydrophilic DES. The concentration of pigments, ionic strength, pH value, and temperature were comprehensively evaluated in the influence factor experiments. Also, the results showed that more than 95.00% of Su/SY distributed in the micellar-rich phase, and nearly all of MB could be transferred from micellar-poor phase to micellar-rich phase with the increase of the pH value. Response surface methodology was utilized to further optimize the extraction conditions for Su. It was found that almost 99.75% Su was separated into the micellar-rich phase. Method validation illustrated that the proposed method had the priority to get precise experimental data for pigments’ separation. Mechanism studies through the conductivity, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and transmission electron microscope (TEM) proved that the formation of micelles between pigments and DESs by hydrophobic and electrostatic interaction was the dominant force in the separation. In addition, [N8881]Cl/PEG400 could efficiently be recovered and reused in the regeneration studies. The novel DES/DES-based AMTPS proposed in this work provided an eco-friendly extraction way in the separation of various charges or hydrophobicity substances.

In this study, deep eutectic solvents coupled with a pulsed electric field (PEF-DES) were first applied to the extraction of traditional Chinese medicine plants. This study uses the PEF-DES extraction technique to extract TG-KF (Kapok flavonoid solution extracted with DES-TG). PEF-DES is a simple, effective and environmentally-friendly technology and can be used in industrial-scale production. For the optimal extraction conditions of TG-KF, DES-TG was used as a solvent, the DES-TG concentration was 50%, the solid–liquid ratio was 1 : 30, the electric field intensity was 0.55 kV cm−1, the number of pulses was 100, and the yield of flavonoids was 14.36 ± 0.35%. TG-KF has very good stability and there is no precipitation or discoloration within 6 months. The results of chicken embryo experiments and human patch tests show that 10% TG-KF aqueous solution has no irritation. DPPH experiments show that TG-KF has excellent efficacy as an antioxidant. Overall, TG-KF is expected to become a potential antioxidant raw material.
