Multifunctional interlayer provides a robust interfacial tunnel environment for highly reversible zinc-ion batteries

Yupeng Dang,Feng Zhu,Dongxu Wang,Shihua Yu,Yen Wei,Dandan Han

Intercalation chemistry/engineering has attracted much attention in the development of electrochemical energy storage. This study employs a green synthesis method to insert cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) into Cu 2-x Se at room temperature, thereby producing a Cu 2-x Se doped material with an expanded interlayer spacing and a nanoplate array structure. Reversible insertion/extraction of Zn 2+ in Cu 2-x Se-CTAB is facilitated through an intercalation reaction mechanism, as evidenced by ex situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements (XPS). Moreover, the CTAB adsorbed on the surface of the zinc anode can regulate the deposition of Zn 2+ and inhibit the formation of dendrites. Benefiting from the above advantages, Cu 2-x Se-CTAB shows a high specific capacity of 661.4 mAh·g −1 at 0.1 A·g −1 as an electrode material for zinc ion batteries, delivered an extraordinary rate capability of 230.2 mAh·g −1 at 3 A·g −1 and excellent cycling stability. Theoretical calculations further demonstrate that the incorporation of CTAB diminishes the electrostatic repulsion between zinc ions and the matrix, facilitating rapid diffusion kinetics of zinc ions, and effectively mitigating the dissolution and volume expansion of the cathode. In addition, a Zn||Cu 2-x Se-CTAB pouch cell has been assembled, delivering a high capacity of 176 mAh·g −1 at 1.0 A·g −1 after 600 cycles and exhibiting a superior long cycling stability. This work highlights the potential of CTAB as a promising solution, providing new opportunities for the development of high-performance rechargeable ZIBs.

A quasi-intercalation reaction for fast sulfur redox kinetics in solid-state lithium–sulfur batteries

Chuang Li,Qi Zhang,Jinzhi Sheng,Biao Chen,Runhua Gao,Zhihong Piao,Xiongwei Zhong,Zhiyuan Han,Yanfei Zhu,Jiulin Wang,Guangmin Zhou,Hui-Ming Cheng

Solid-state lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries have been recognized as a competitive candidate for next-generation energy storage systems due to their high energy density and safety. However, the slow redox kinetics between S and Li2S and the large volume change of sulfur during charge/discharge have hindered the development of solid-state Li–S batteries. We report a solid-state Li–S battery using a polymer-in-salt solid-state electrolyte, in which the sulfur is anchored in a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) substrate during cycling, avoiding the formation of Li2S and thus resulting in much faster redox kinetics and a smaller volume change than the conventional solid-state Li–S batteries. The quasi-intercalation reaction in the system is achieved with the assistance of the residual N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), which helps strengthen the C–S bond. As a result, the solid-state Li-sulfurized PAN (SPAN) batteries have a superb rate capability at room temperature, even higher than those of liquid-state Li–S batteries, due to the faster redox kinetics and smaller volume change without solid–solid S to Li2S conversion which is present in liquid-state Li–SPAN batteries. This is the first report of the redox kinetics of solid-state Li–SPAN batteries being increased by changing the bond-strength of the C–S bond instead of using catalysts. This technique opens up new opportunities for designing high-performance solid-state Li–S batteries.

Discovery of a new intercalation-type anode for high-performance sodium ion batteries

Yajun Zhao,Tao Sun,Qing Yin,Jian Zhang,Shuoxiao Zhang,Jianeng Luo,Hong Yan,Lirong Zheng,Jingbin Han,Min Wei

A CoFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) with nitrates in its interlayer has been developed for the first time as an intercalation-type anode material for sodium ion batteries (SIBs). Unlike the well-recognized conversion reaction for metal hydroxides in lithium ion batteries, an exceptional intercalation/de-intercalation mechanism for Na+-storage was revealed. The CoFe–NO3−-LDH anode delivers an initial discharge capacity of 498 mA h g−1 and a reversible capacity of 209 mA h g−1 after 200 cycles at 1 A g−1. The superb Na+-storage performance is attributed to the expanded interlayer distance of the CoFe-LDH pillared by the interlayer nitrates, benefiting the intercalation/de-intercalation of Na+ ions. Besides, the topochemical transformation property of LDH materials guarantees high structural stability during the valence state change of Co2+/Co2−x and Fe2+/Fe3+ in their host layers. In addition, theoretical calculation reveals a low Na+ diffusion barrier of 0.147 eV in the interlayer space of CoFe–NO3−-LDH, which manifests LDH as a good Na+ ion conductor. Therefore, this work not only develops a novel intercalation-type anode for SIBs, but also provides new insights into the energy-storage mechanism of layered metal hydroxides.

Mixed-Valence Copper Selenide as an Anode for Ultralong Lifespan Rocking-Chair Zn-Ion Batteries: An Insight into its Intercalation/Extraction Kinetics and Charge Storage Mechanism

Yang Yang,Jinfei Xiao,Jinyan Cai,Gongming Wang,Wencheng Du,Yufei Zhang,Xihong Lu,Cheng Chao Li

Environment-friendly and low-cost aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have received considerable attention for large-scale energy storage. However, the low coulombic efficiency and potential safety hazards of Zn-metal anodes severely hinder their practical implementations. Herein, for the first time, mixed-valence Cu 2− x Se is proposed as a new intercalation anode to construct Zn-metal-free rocking-chair ZIBs with a long lifespan. It is found that the introduction of low-valence Cu not only modify active sites for Zn 2+ ion storage, but also optimizes the electronic interaction between the active sites and the intercalated Zn 2+ ion, leading to a favorable intercalation formation energy (−0.68 eV) and reduced diffusion barrier, as demonstrated by first-principles calculation. Ex situ X-ray diffraction, ex situ transmission electron microscopy and galvanostatic intermittent titration technique measurements reveal the reversible insertion/extraction of Zn 2+ in Cu 2− x Se via an intercalation reaction mechanism. Owing to the rigid host structure and facile Zn 2+ diffusion kinetics, the Cu 2− x Se nanorod anode shows an enhanced coulombic efficiency (above 99.5%), outstanding rate capability and excellent cycling stability. The as-fabricated Zn x MnO 2 ||Cu 2− x Se Zn-ion full battery exhibits an impressive electrochemical performance, particularly an ultralong cycle life of over 20 000 cycles at 2 A g −1 . This study is expected to provide new opportunities for developing high-performance rechargeable aqueous ZIBs.

Preparation and in-situ Raman characterization of binder-free u-GF@CFC cathode for rechargeable aluminum-ion battery

Chengyuan Liu,Zhiwei Liu,Hongkun Niu,Cong Wang,Zhaowen Wang,Bingliang Gao,Jingjing Liu,Mark Taylor

We provide a method for preparation of binder-free cathode for rechargeable aluminum-ion batteries (AIBs). Ultrasonicated natural graphite (u-NG) flakes in N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) is drop-casted to a carbon fiber cloth (CFC) to obtain binder-free u-GF@CFC cathode for AIBs. We also provide an in-situ Raman spectral technology and the corresponding in-situ Raman cell to determine the mechanism of intercalation/deintercalation reactions of the chloroaluminate ions at cathode of AIBs. The in-situ Raman spectra are recorded using a Raman spectrometer combined with a potentiostat/galvanostat model electrochemical workstation. • A simple preparation method of a binder-free u-GF@CFC cathode is suggested. • The u-GF@CFC cathode is obtained by drop-casting ultrasonicated graphite flakes on the surface and internal gaps of the carbon fiber cloth. • The method includes the in-situ Raman spectral technology and the corresponding in-situ Raman cell.

Exploring in electrochemical behaviors and anions storage characteristics of carbonaceous materials in molten salts Ni/NiCl2-graphite battery

Wenlong Zhang,Huanxin Li,Han Zhou,Xiaohui Ning

Carbonaceous materials that possess reversible anions storage capacity and can worked as the cathode for Ni/NiCl 2 -Graphite battery . However, differences in storage capacity of carbonaceous cathodes and factors affecting anions storage capacity have not been thoroughly investigated. Here, we systematically evaluated the electrochemical properties and intercalation reaction mechanism of carbonaceous materials cathodes firstly. Expanded graphite and graphite paper cathodes display the highest specific capacity of 72 mAh/g and diffusion-controlled capacity ratios (∼98 %). X-ray powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy analysis on the graphite intermetallic compounds confirmed the presence of stage-5 intercalation/de-intercalation reactions. Density functional theory calculation and ionic diffusion model analysis showed that the intercalation and diffusion process of AlCl 4 - in graphite interlayers play a crucial role in anions storage reaction. Rich-in-edged outer graphite-layers are more conducive to form intercalation reaction active sites and store anions effectively. The expanded graphite electrode exhibits the highest intercalation reaction ratio (φ R-GP  = 1.40), confirming sufficient intercalation reaction active sites in each unit mass. And the multiple wrinkles and curled graphite sheets in expanded graphite provide adequate ionic transport/diffusion channels during electrochemical intercalation/de-intercalation reactions. Our findings provide significant support for understanding anions storage behaviors and designing cathodes with high anions storage capacity in the Ni/NiCl 2 -Graphite battery .

A novel synthesis of VSe2 as a high-rate lithium-ion battery anode material

Jing Li,Zhengguang Shi,Qianru Lin,Yaohui Zhang,Mingxue Huo,You Wang,Hsu-Sheng Tsai

VSe 2 is a promising anode material for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its unique layered structure, and its metallic properties. However, further exploration to investigate the lithium storage performance of VSe 2 is limited by the synthesis difficulty of pure VSe 2 . In this work, a novel nitrogen-doped carbon modified VSe 2 obtained by using p -phenylenediamine as the reducing agent is reported. This material delivers a reversible capacity of 738.25 mA h g −1 at 100 mA g −1 and after 50 cycles, it retains 772.15 mA h g −1 . Using p -phenylenediamine as a reducing agent to obtain VSe 2 is demonstrated for the first time, and p -phenylenediamine also provides carbon and nitrogen sources for the heteroatom modification of VSe 2 . This modification of nitrogen-doped carbon facilitates the generation of new active sites, and improve charge transfer. First-principle calculations show that the diffusion barrier for the Li  +  migration within the VSe 2 layers is low. The ex-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) results verify that VSe 2 stores lithium through intercalation and conversion reactions. This work may provide a new solution for synthesizing high-performance transition metal dichalcogenide electrode materials.
