Development of stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) device with high stability and extraction efficiency is critical and challenging by date. In this work, etched poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) tube with high mechanical strength and large specific surface area was used as jacket for SBSE device. By etching with concentrated sulfuric acid, the smooth outer surface of PEEK become porous with plenty of micro holes, which was beneficial for coating of sorbents and significantly improved the extraction performance. After functionalized by bio-polydopamine method, strong hydrophobic p-naphtholbenzein molecular was immobilized onto the chemical resistant PEEK surface (PNB@E-PEEK) as stationary phase. We also firstly developed a simple detachable dumbbell-shaped structure for improving the workability of PEEK jacket stir bar. The dumbbell-shaped construction can eliminate the friction between stir bar and container, and the design of detachable structure make elution can be accomplished easier with small amount of organic solvent. It was interesting that the developed detachable dumbbell-shaped PNB@E-PEEK stir bar showed exceptional stability and extraction efficiency for SBSE enrichment of multiple analytes including several Sudan dyes, triazines, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), alkaloids and flavonoid. By coupling with high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV), PNB@E-PEEK stir bar based SBSE-HPLC-UV method was applied for the analysis of common Sudan dye pollutants. The method showed low limits of detection (0.02-0.03 ng/mL), good linearity (R 2 ≥ 0.9979) and good reproducibility (relative standard deviation ≤ 7.96%). It has been successfully applied to determine three dye pollutants in tap and lake water.

A novel molecularly imprinted stir bar (MIP-SB) was developed with melamine (MA) as the template molecule in this study. The sorptive capacity of MIP-SB was nearly three times over that of non-imprinted stir bar (NIP-SB). The MIP-SB presented much better selectivity than NIP-SB when used to absorb MA and its analogues. An analytical method to determine MA in powdered milk was established by combining MIP-SB sorptive extraction with HPLC. The liner range was 0.0631–12.6 ng/mL with good correlation coefficient of 0.9983, and the limit of detection was 0.0127 ng/mL based on three times ratio of signal to noise. This method was successfully applied to the determination of MA in powdered milk with satisfactory results. The method built is simple and suitable for the determination of MA in milk products which is of great significance for quality control of milk products.

A molecularly imprinted polymer coated stir bar (MIP-SB) using dopamine as a template was fabricated. The adsorptive capacity of the MIP-SB was almost 4 times over that of non-imprinted stir bar. The MIP-SB showed good extracting selectivity for dopamine when used to adsorb dopamine and its analogs. An analytical method to determine dopamine in urine sample was established by combining MIP-SB sorptive extraction with HPLC-fluorescence detector. The linear range of dopamine concentration was 0.378–18.9 ng/ml with correlation coefficient of 0.9990, and the limit of quantification was about 0.0945 ng/ml (S/N = 10). The recoveries of dopamine with spiked urine samples at three different levels were between 92.3 and 106.9%, and the relative standard deviations were within 13.2% ( n = 3). The method is simple and suitable for the determination of dopamine in human urine for clinical application.

A water compatible molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) coated stir bar for bisphenol A(BPA) was prepared with 3,3′,5,5′-tetrabromobisphenol A as the dummy template molecule in this study. The dummy molecularly imprinted polymers coated stir bar (DMIPs-SB) showed better selectivity than the bars coated with polydimethylsiloxane or non-imprinted polymers when used to extract BPA and its three analogues. The saturated adsorption amount of the DMIPs coating was 3.0 times over that of the non-imprinted polymers coating. To achieve the optimum extraction performance, several parameters, including extraction and desorption time, pH value, adsorption temperature and stirring speed were investigated. The high-performance liquid chromatography combined with the DMIPs-SB was employed in the analysis of BPA in aqueous solution. The linear range of BPA concentration in aqueous medium was 0.0228–2.28 ng/mL with correlation coefficient of 0.9994 and the detection limit was about 6.84 × 10 −3 ng/mL based on three times ratio of signal to noise. This method was directly applied to the determination of trace BPA in milk with satisfactory results.

The authors describe an enzyme-free aptamer-based assay for the determination of the model antibiotic kanamycin (Kana). The method is making use of (a) microfluidic chip electrophoresis; (b) a stirring bar carrying a gold-labeled aptamer probe, and (c) the hybridization chain reaction (HCR) for signal amplification. Firstly, a stirring bar (length: 1 cm; diameter: 0.2 mm) was modified with a large amount of duplex DNA and then hybridized with aptamer and its partially complementary chains (cDNA). In the presence of Kana, the binding between the Kana and aptamer unwinds the duplex structures and releases a corresponding amount of cDNA into the supernatant. The released cDNA triggers the HCR in the presence of H1 and H2 DNA hairpin to produce a large amount of duplex DNA chains with different lengths. At the same time, the amounts of H1 and H2 are reduced. The decreased signal of H1/H2 after several HCR cycles can be used to quantify kana in the 1 pg·mL −1 to 10 ng·mL −1 , with a detection limit of 0.29 pg·mL −1 . The signal is generated by reading the fluorescence, best at excitation/emission maxima of 470/525 nm. The whole detection process takes 3 min only. The assay was employed to the detection of Kana in spiked milk and fish samples. Results are consistent with those of an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. The assay has high throughput, high selectivity, and high amplification capability.
Schematic of a stirring bar functionalized with gold-labeled aptamer acting as the capture probe. It can capture the target and release primer simultaneously. The primer triggers the hybridization chain reaction inducing the consumption of H1 and H2. After a certain reaction time, the mixture is injected into the MCE platform for microfluidic electrophoretic separation and fluorometric detection.

A novel molecularly imprinted stir bar (MI-SB) for sorptive extraction of semicarbazide (SEM) was prepared in present paper. The coating of the stir bar was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, dynamic adsorption and static adsorption tests. The saturated adsorption of MI-SB was about 4 times over that of non-imprinted stir bar (NI-SB). The selectivity of MI-SB for SEM was much better than NI-SB. A method to determine SEM was established by coupling MI-SB sorptive extraction with HPLC-UV. The liner range was 1–100 ng/mL for SEM with a correlation coefficient of 0.9985. The limit of detection was about 0.59 ng/mL, which was below the minimum required performance limit of SEM in meat products regulated by European Union. The method was applied to the determination of SEM in fish samples with satisfactory results.

In this paper, a new method for the preparation of a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIPs)-coated magnetic stir bar for bisphenol A (BPA) is proposed. The MIPs were prepared using BPA as the template molecule, and the sol-gel technique was employed to coat the MIPs onto the surface of a glass tube, which contained an internal magnetic core. The morphology and structure of the MIPs and the coating on the glass stir bar were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Parameters affecting the extraction efficiency, such as extraction time, stirring speed, desorption solvent, and desorption time, were optimized. To evaluate the selective adsorption performance of the BPA-MIPs coating, molecularly imprinted stir bar sorptive extraction (MIPs-SBSE) was used in combination with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for the detection of BPA in deionized water, tap water, bottled water, and reservoir water. The results showed that under the optimized conditions, the MIPs coating exhibited better adsorption capacity and selectivity for BPA compared to the non-imprinted coating. The BPA-MIPs-SBSE could be reused for at least five cycles without a significant decrease in its selective adsorption ability. The recoveries of BPA in the four actual water samples ranged from 70.53% to 93.10%, with relative standard deviations of 4.49% to 8.69%. The practical application demonstrated that this method is simple, convenient, selective, and sensitive, making it suitable for the analysis and detection of trace amounts of BPA in complex samples. Keywords:bisphenol A;molecularly imprinted polymer;sol-gel method;stir bar sorptive extraction

A covalent organic framework (COF) based on imine was synthesized using 2,5-dihexoxyterephthalaldehyde (DHT) and 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl) benzene (TAPB) as starting materials. The TAPB-DHT-COF exhibited satisfactory chemical stability, making it a promising adsorbing material for stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) of four estrogens, including estrone (E1), β-estradiol (E2), hexestrol (HES), and mestranol (MeEE2), in ambient water samples. The extracted analytes were subsequently analyzed using a high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector (HPLC-DAD). A series of parameters affecting the SBSE process, such as solution pH, ionic strength, extraction time, and desorption solvent, were investigated by the controlled variable method. Under optimal conditions, the limit of detection (LODs) for the four targeted estrogens ranged from 0.06 to 0.15 µg/L, with a linear range from 0.2 to 100 µg/L. The observed enrichment factor (EF) ranged from 39 to 49, while the theoretical EF was estimated to be 50-fold. This methodology can be applied to the identification of estrogens in three environmental water samples.

We have prepared a novel caffeine imprinted polymer on a stir bar that can be used for selective extraction of caffeine, theobromine and theophylline from beverages. The polymerization time and quantities of reagents (template, cross-linker, porogenic solvent) were optimized. The morphology of the molecularly imprinted polymer-coating was studied by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform IR spectroscopy. A rapid and sensitive method was worked out for the extraction of caffeine, theobromine and theophylline from beverages by using the molecularly imprinted stir bar followed by HPLC analysis. The effects of extraction solvent, stirring speed, desorption solvent, adsorption and desorption time were optimized. The method displays a linear response in the 5–150 μg L −1 caffein concentration range, with a correlation coefficient of >0.9904. The recoveries for three analytes in tea, carbonated and functional beverages were 91–108 %, 90–110 % and 93–109 %, with relative standard deviations ranging from 3.6–5.7 %, 3.5–7.9 % and 3.2–7.9 %, respectively. A molecularly imprinted stir bar was prepared and applied for the selective extraction and sensitive determination of caffeine and its analogues in beverages by coupling with HPLC. The limits of detection were in the range of 1.24–2.25 μg L −1 (S/N = 3) which are lower than those in published papers

A simple, sensitive and inexpensive method of ion-pair stir bar sorptive extraction (IP-SBSE) combined with high performance liquid chromatography -ultraviolet (HPLC-UV) detection was developed for the simultaneous determination of three acidic phytohormones (salicylic acid (SA), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), and abscisic acid (ABA)) in vegetables. With the addition of cationic surfactant-cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) in sample solutions, ion pair between CTAB and target phytohormones were formed, leading to an improvement of the extraction efficiency for target phytohormones by C 18 silica coated SBSE. The factors affecting the extraction efficiency of three target phytohormones by IP-C 18 coated SBSE were optimized, and the optimal experimental conditions were established. Under the optimal conditions, the limits of detection for SA, IAA and ABA obtained by IP-C 18 -SBSE-HPLC-UV were 2.7, 2.1 and 0.3 μg L −1 , with the relative standard deviations of 6.0%, 5.0% and 8.3%, respectively, and the enrichment factor was 32–49-fold. The developed method was applied to the determination of SA, IAA and ABA in cucumbers and green bean sprouts, and the recoveries of SA, IAA and ABA for the spiked samples were between 72.8% and 109.5%.

A detailed study has been carried out on monohydroxycucurbit[7]uril-based stir-bar sorptive extraction (SBSE). A polydimethylsiloxane coating was produced by a sol–gel technique and doped with monohydroxycucurbit[7]uril ((HO) 1 Q [7]) as a selective sorbent phase. (HO) 1 Q [7] was chemically bound to the sol–gel silica substrate through hydrolysis and polycondensation. The coating possesses a porous surface, shows strong solvent resistance and good thermal stability, and has a long lifespan. Four groups of compounds, with polarities ranging from apolar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to polar ketones, aromatic amines and phenols, were selected as test analytes. They were extracted with the coated stir bar, then desorbed with methanol and quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. The limits of detection range between 1.3 and 15 μg L −1 , the linear ranges extend from 5 to 10,000 μg L −1 , and the relative recoveries from spiked samples range between 76.4 and 97.9%. The intraday relative standard deviations range from 2.3 to 8.6% (for n = 3, at 500 μg L −1 ). Compared with a commercial PDMS-coated stir bar and a polyether sulfone-coated stir bar, the new stir bar shows wider applicability and better extraction efficiency for each group of compounds. In addition, the stir bar can simultaneously extract mixtures of chemicals of different polarities. This endows it with the potential for recovering a broad group of polar organic compounds.
A stir bar for sorptive extraction based on monohydroxycucurbit[7]uril has been prepared by a sol–gel technique. The stir bar coupled with HPLC with UV detection allows for the determination of a variety of polar compounds and multicomponent mixtures, respectively.

Electrochemical polymerization of luminol molecularly imprinted polymer on carboxyl graphene (MIP/CG) was developed as stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) coating for selective pre-concentration and specific recognition of bisphenol A (BPA), hexoestrol and diethylstilbestrol in milk samples. Luminol was employed as monomer and BPA as the template to prepare MIP under 0–0.6 V electro-polymerization. Carboxyl graphene was modified on pencil lead as the substrate to increase extraction capacity. The preparation and extraction conditions affecting the extraction efficiency were optimized. Under the optimized conditions, a good linearity of three estrogens was obtained in the range of 4–1000 ng mL −1 . The average recoveries at the three spiked levels of the three estrogens ranged from 83.4% to 96.3% with the relative standard deviations (RSD) ≤ 7.1%. The limits of detection were in the range of 0.36–1.09 ng mL −1 . The developed method with low cost, high selectivity and good reproducibility can be potentially applied for determining trace estrogens in complex food samples.
