Hydraulic fracturing has been proposed as a potential technology for the development of low-permeability oil reservoirs and also has promising application prospects offshore. In this study, a novel SiO 2 -enhanced seawater-based temperature-resistant clean fracturing fluid was formulated. The fracturing fluid main agents, additives and reducing agents were screened. Besides, the physical and chemical properties (rheology) as well as application (i.e., sand-carrying, gel-breaking, dynamic fluid loss, dynamic damage and anti-swelling) performance of the proposed SiO 2 -enhanced seawater-based temperature-resistant clean fracturing fluid were systematically investigated. It was revealed that 3.2 wt% AASB-17+1.92 wt% NaSal+0.1 wt% SC-107+0.1 wt% TS3 was the optimal SiO 2 -enhanced seawater-based clean fracturing fluid system formula. The SiO 2 -enhanced seawater-based temperature-resistant clean fracturing fluid exhibited remarkable rheological characteristics , the temperature and shear resistance was increased by 28 %, with a maximum temperature resistance of 90ºC. This system can be applied to the fracturing development of most oil reservoirs in the Bohai Bay. In addition, the presence of SiO 2 nanoparticles significantly improved the sand-carrying properties of the proposed clean fractuirng fluid system. The experimental results also suggested that the SiO 2 -enhanced seawater-based temperature-resistant clean fracturing fluid showed excellent performance of shear recovery (fixed shear viscosity recovery rate was 100 %), gel breaking (30 min,1 mPa·s), filter loss ( C w =4.75×10 −4 m/min 1/2 ), anti-swelling (anti-swelling rate was 77.78 %) and salt tolerance. This study provides fundamental technical support for the application of SiO 2 -enhanced seawater-based temperature-resistant clean fracturing fluid in offshore fracturing.

The development of fracturing fluids is pivotal for optimizing oilfield production, with polymer-based fracturing thickeners emerging as a principal focus of research owing to their superior rheological properties. In this investigation, polyacrylamide emulsions were synthesized through inverse emulsion polymerization, utilizing water glass and silane-modified water glass as the modifying agents. A comprehensive assessment of their performance was conducted. The findings demonstrated that polymer systems containing 0.2% sodium metasilicate and 0.03% silane-modified sodium metasilicate exhibited remarkable rheological behaviors. Specifically, the apparent viscosity increased by 25% and 40%, respectively, while shear recovery tests revealed enhancements in shear viscosity of 26% and 90% at low shear rates. Furthermore, at a proppant concentration of 20%, the proppant transport capacity of these two enhanced systems improved by 58.63% and 67.22%, respectively. This enhancement is likely attributable to the high bond energy of the silicon–oxygen (Si–O) bonds in water glass, which imparts greater structural stability to the polymer. The incorporation of silane-modified water glass further improves the dispersion and compatibility within the polymer matrix. The results offer a robust theoretical foundation for its use as a fracturing thickener.

Water-based fracturing fluid has recently garnered increasing attention as an alternative oilfield working fluid for propagating reservoir fractures and transporting sand. However, the low temperature resistance and stability of water-based fracturing fluid is a significant limitation, restricting the fracture propagation and gravel transport. To effectively ameliorate the temperature resistance and sand-carrying capacity, a modified cross-linker with properties adaptable to varying reservoir conditions and functional groups was synthesized and chemically characterized. Meanwhile, a multifunctional collaborative progressive evaluation device was developed to investigate the rheology and sand-carrying capacity of fracturing fluid. Utilizing molecular dynamics simulations, the thickening mechanism of the modified cross-linker and the sand-carrying mechanism of the fracturing fluid were elucidated. Results indicate that the designed cross-linker provided a high viscosity stability of 130 mPa·s and an excellent sand-carrying capacity of 15 cm2at 0.3 wt% cross-linker content. Additionally, increasing reservoir pressure exhibited enhanced thickening and sand-carrying capacities. However, a significant inverse relationship was observed between reservoir temperature and sand-carrying capacity, attributed to changes in the drag coefficient and thickener adsorption. These results verified the effectiveness of the cross-linker in enhancing fluid viscosity and sand-carrying capacity as a modified cross-linker for water-based fracturing fluid.

In the continuous liquid distribution process, the emulsion drag-reducing agent has poor viscosity-increasing ability and a low solid content, resulting in a high concentration and high cost. To solve this problem, a nanosuspension agent with a “shelf structure,” a dispersion accelerator, and a density regulator were used as auxiliary agents to realize the stable suspension of a polymer dry powder in an oil phase. The results show that the molecular weight of the synthesized polymer powder could reach nearly 28 million when the mass ratio of acrylamide (AM) to acrylic acid (AA) was 80:20 and a chain extender was added. The synthesized polymer powder was dissolved in tap water and 2% brine separately, and the viscosity of the solutions was measured. The dissolution rate of up to 90% was reached at 30 °C, and the viscosity was 33 and 23 mPa s in tap water and in 2% brine, respectively. A stable suspension can be obtained without obvious stratification in one week and with good dispersion after 6 months by using the following composition: 37% oil phase + 1% nanosuspension agent + 10% dispersion accelerator + 50% polymer dry powder + 2% density regulator. The drag-reduction performance is good, remaining close to 73% with increasing time. The viscosity of the suspension solution is 21 mPa s in 50% standard brine, and the salt resistance is good. The rate at which the suspension fracturing fluid damages the formation is 7.56%, and the reservoir damage is unsubstantial. Its performance in field applications illustrated that its sand-carrying capacity, referring to the capacity of the fracturing fluid to carry proppants into the fracture and place them in a predetermined position, reaches 10%. The results show that the fracturing fluid can be used as a pre-fluid to break the formation, form fractures, and expand fracture networks under low-viscosity conditions and can be used as a sand-carrying fluid to carry proppants into the formation under high-viscosity conditions. Additionally, the fracturing fluid can directly realize the fast conversion between high and low viscosities and allow for multiple uses of one agent.

In order to further increase the temperature and shear resistance of a conventional CO2-sensitive clean fracturing fluid, a novel silica nanoparticle-reinforced CO2-sensitive fracturing fluid system was developed. The system was prepared with the compositions of 2.0 wt % N-[3-(dimethylamino) propyl] oleamide, 1.5 wt % sodium p-toluene sulfonate (NaPts), and 0.025 wt % silica nanoparticles. The rheological properties, temperature resistance, shear resistance, sand-carrying capacity, gel-breaking property, and core damage property of the system were systematically studied and evaluated. Compared with the conventional CO2-sensitive fracturing fluid system, the silica nanoparticle-reinforced CO2-sensitive fracturing fluid system has a better viscosity increase effect, and the zero-shear viscosity increases from 2900 to 3500 mPa·s. By adding and removing CO2, the viscosity of the system can be repeatedly converted from high to low, and the reusable property can be realized. After introducing silica nanoparticles, the temperature resistance ability of the clean fracturing fluid increases from 100 to 130 °C, the sand-carrying effect increases by 23%, rapid and thorough gel breaking occurs, and core damage is less than 13%. We expect that this study can broaden the application of the CO2-sensitive clean fracturing fluid in low permeability, high-temperature reservoirs and provide a theoretical basis for field applications.

In view of challenges such as the long dissolution time of powder friction reducers in high-salinity water, poor environmental friendliness of water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion friction reducers, and the poor proppant-carrying capacity of conventional slickwater, a novel variable viscosity friction reducer suspension (EACM) with high salt tolerance, low damage, and strong proppant-carrying capacity was prepared by dispersing salt-tolerant polymer powder in alcohol solvents. The solubility, drag reduction ability, viscoelasticity, proppant-carrying capacity, temperature and shear resistance, and gel breaking ability of EACM were investigated. The results showed that the best solvent for the friction reducer suspension was polyethylene glycol 400, in which EACM exhibited a rapid dissolution rate with a thickening rate of 89.5% within 2 min. Due to the synergic effect between fumed silica and polyamide wax as antisedimentation agents, both at a concentration of 2.0 wt %, the EACM could remain stable for 60 days. EACM showed an excellent drag reduction performance at both low and high viscosities in 100 000 mg/L salt brine. Specifically, a drag reduction of up to 72.4% was obtained using 0.21 wt % EACM (4.65 mPa s), and a 60.8% drag reduction was achieved using 1.0 wt % EACM (35.5 mPa s). When the concentration increased from 0.13 to 1.0 wt %, the EACM solution changed from viscous to elastic; the spatial network structure of the solution became more compact, and the proppant-carrying capacity was enhanced. The viscosity of 1.6 wt % EACM solution could be maintained at 55.9 mPa s after shearing at 90 °C for 120 min at a shear rate of 100 s–1. EACM solution also exhibited the advantages of easy breaking and low residue. This paper provides guidance for the design and selection of a novel friction reducer suspension in the oil and gas industry.

Aiming at the problems of weak proppant carrying capacity and serious filtration loss caused by the extremely low viscosity (0.02–0.06 mPa·s) of supercritical carbon dioxide fracturing fluid, a modified silicone-based thickener was designed and synthesized, and its thickening mechanism was explored. First, the conditions of the hydrosilylation reaction were optimized using response surface methodology. The successful introduction of thickening and solubilizing groups was verified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR). Second, the solubilization and thickening properties of multisystem polymer thickeners were investigated by using a self-designed high-temperature and high-pressure visual reactor: the viscosity of carbon dioxide could be increased to 4.308 mPa·s at a content of 5 wt % of thickener, and the proppant-carrying capacity (1.04 cm/s) and filtration-loss-resistant (0.343 m/min0.5) of supercritical carbon dioxide fracturing fluids were significantly improved by the addition of thickener (DHTAF). Finally, the dissolution and thickening mechanism of the thickener in CO2 was investigated by electrostatic potential distribution, cohesive energy density (CED), and interaction energy (Eint) using molecular simulation. The above research can provide an effective reference for the efficient exploitation of shale reservoirs and the application of supercritical CO2. It not only helps to solve the current problems in the field of supercritical carbon dioxide fracturing but also has far-reaching implications for promoting the technological progress of shale gas exploitation and the sustainable development of the energy industry.

In order to solve the problem of drag reduction at the front end of shale fractures and sand carrying at the tail end with increased viscosity, the molecular dynamics simulation (MD) method was used to design polymer molecules and simulate the steric resistance, interaction potential energy, mean square displacement, and radial distribution function of the polymer. The polymer AM-AMPS-LMA-DiC 12 AM (ASLC12) with better solubility, diffusion, and resistance reduction potential was obtained and synthesized. By scanning electron microscope (SEM) and viscoelastic analysis, ASLC12 has a stable mesh structure, good viscoelasticity, and shear resistance, and the mesh structure formed by it is in a dynamic equilibrium state of fracture-reorganization under shear. We then analyzed the drag reduction, sand carrying, and salt resistance of ASLC12. When the concentration of ASLC12 is 0.09%, the sand-carrying requirement is satisfied. When the concentration is 0.05%, the drag reduction rate can reach 74.1%, and the resistance reduction rate of ASLC12 in salt ion solution can still reach more than 62%. This shows that the polymer ASLC12 has better sand carrying, drag reduction, and salt resistance.
