Improved Electrical Output Performance of Cellulose-Based Triboelectric Nanogenerators Enabled by Negative Triboelectric Materials

Feijie Wang,Suyang Wang,Yifan Liu,Tianmeng Hou,Zhen Wu,Jing Qian,Zhicheng Zhao,Liqiang Wang,Chao Jia,Shufeng Ma

Cellulose-based triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have attracted widespread attention due to the low cost and environmentally friendly characteristics of cellulose. However, achieving high electrical energy output from these generators still presents significant challenges. Here, cellulose is dissolved-regenerated to form a composite aerogel with high specific surface area, in which cellulose-based composites with excellent negative triboelectric properties are developed by coupling the rich 3D network structure of the regenerated cellulose aerogel, modified barium titanate, and poly(vinylidene fluoride). The TENGs assembled from the composite materials exhibit an output voltage of 1040 V and a current of 1.165 mA at an external force of 8 N and a frequency of 4 Hz, outperforming all cellulose-based negative triboelectric materials. In addition, the nanogenerators have a stable electrical energy output capacity, with no significant property degradation in 100 000 contact-separation tests. The excellent electrical output property of the composite materials enables them to harvest energy from human movement and waterdrops, demonstrating their great application prospects in wearable devices, energy harvesting devices, self-powered sensors, and other fields.

An Encapsulation-Free and Hierarchical Porous Triboelectric Scaffold with Dynamic Hydrophilicity for Efficient Cartilage Regeneration

Bin Luo,Sinan Wang,Xingqi Song,Shuo Chen,Qiaoyu Qi,Wenyi Chen,Xiaoyuan Deng,Yufeng Ni,Chengzhen Chu,Guangdong Zhou,Xiaohong Qin,Dong Lei,Zhengwei You

Tissue engineering and electrotherapy are two promising methods to promote tissue repair. However, their integration remains an underexplored area, because their requirements on devices are usually distinct. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have shown great potential to develop self-powered devices. However, due to their susceptibility to moisture, TENGs have to be encapsulated in vivo. Therefore, existing TENGs cannot be employed as tissue engineering scaffolds, which require direct interaction with surrounding cells. Here, the concept of triboelectric scaffolds (TESs) is proposed. Poly(glycerol sebacate), a biodegradable and relatively hydrophobic elastomer, is selected as the matrix of TESs. Each hydrophobic micropore in multi-hierarchical porous TESs efficiently serves as a moisture-resistant working unit of TENGs. Integration of tons of micropores ensures the electrotherapy ability of TESs in vivo without encapsulation. Originally hydrophobic TESs are degraded by surface erosion and transformed into hydrophilic surfaces, facilitating their role as tissue engineering scaffolds. Notably, TESs seeded with chondrocytes obtain dense and large matured cartilages after subcutaneous implantation in nude mice. Importantly, rabbits with osteochondral defects receiving TES implantation show favorable hyaline cartilage regeneration and complete cartilage healing. This work provides a promising electronic biomedical device and will inspire a series of new in vivo applications.

Triboelectrification of interface controlled by photothermal materials based on electron transfer

Nannan Wang,Yange Feng,Youbin Zheng,Feng Zhou,Daoai Wang

The tribocharges generated by the friction of the polymer material are temporarily stored on the interface, which allows the triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) to generate electrical output or produce electrostatic discharge on the polymer surface . Therefore, tribocharge regulation on the material surface is of considerable significance to improve the electrical output of TENGs or design new anti-static materials. A new method with universal applicability to control the triboelectrification of interface by photothermal materials is proposed in this study. In this method, the near-infrared (NIR) irradiation will cause the thermo electron emission of Fe 3 O 4 , thereby changing the charge amount on the PDMS surface. Results show that the surface potential of Fe 3 O 4 @PDMS is reduced by 76.8% after NIR excitation when the PDMS surface is positively charged. In addition, the surface potential increases by 42.9% when the surface of Fe 3 O 4 is negatively charged, showing the opposite trend. Moreover, the friction coefficient of the polymer can be adjusted by modifying the surface triboelectricity to change its motion state. This strategy has many interesting applications, such as reducing the friction resistance of skis by reducing the surface charges or increasing the friction resistance by raising the charges on the surface of a car tire, thereby reducing the gliding distance during emergency braking.

Coordination of Mg2+ with Chitosan for Enhanced Triboelectric Performance

Jingjia He,Lili Wang,Kaiyuan Zheng,Shoukang Hu,Xueke Zhang,Ziyu Mu

In this work, Mg2+modified chitosan (Mg2+/CS) is proposed and successfully designed. By investigating the effects of the Mg2+and CS interaction on hydrogen bonding, dipoles, charge density, surface potential, and roughness, the coordination between Mg2+and CS is verified and the mechanism of coordination improving tribological properties is elucidated. The Mg2+/CS coordination structure enhances intermolecular interactions, promoting the formation of new hydrogen bonds and increasing the dipoles. Compared to CS, the relative dielectric constant of Mg2+/CS increased by 76%, the surface potential increased by 70 mV, and the root mean square roughness increased by 39.4 nm. The open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current, and charge density of the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) fabricated from Mg2+/CS were increased by 100%, 94%, and 75%, respectively, compared to the CS-TENG fabricated from pure CS. The coordination of Mg2+increased the charge density of the Mg2+/CS-TENG, significantly enhancing its charge transfer capability. The Mg2+/CS-TENG successfully provided power for photodetectors and LEDs. Mg2+/CS exhibited excellent flexibility and skin adhesion, and the Mg2+/CS-TENG successfully converted the mechanical energy generated by human joint motion into electrical signals. The coordination structure of Mg2+with CS enhances the triboelectric performance of Mg2+/CS-TENG, providing new light for the research of chitosan-based TENGs.

Halogen regulation of inorganic perovskites toward robust triboelectric nanogenerators and charging polarity series

Xueping Yu,Yudi Wang,Jihua Zhang,Jialong Duan,Xiya Yang,Liming Liu,Qunwei Tang

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are preferred energy conversion devices to scavenge low-frequency mechanical energy sources from ambient environments due to their easy-to-operate principle structures, cost-effectiveness, and wide application areas. Halide perovskites have been demonstrated to be a good candidate as triboelectrification dielectric materials in TENGs, yet their triboelectrification behavior and charging affinity are still unclear. Herein, inorganic CsPbBr3 perovskites doped with halide ions (I− and Cl−) are systematically investigated focusing on their triboelectric behaviors through fabricating perovskite TENGs in vertical contact-separation mode. The charging polarities of different halide perovskites are qualified and ascertained by evaluating their triboelectric output signals, power density, charging capacity, and figure of merit (FOM), which are confirmed by the deviation of electron binding energy, carrier mobility, surface potential and dielectric properties affected by different halide ion incorporation. Meanwhile, the champion perovskite TENG demonstrates an excellent operational durability in an ambient atmosphere. A modified triboelectric series containing inorganic perovskites with various halide ions is established based on the empirical results. This work not only enriches the triboelectric series, but also expands the application of perovskite materials in mechanical energy harvesting fields.

Robotic Taste Sensing via Triboelectric and Deep Learning

Shuo Tian,Yi Cheng,Ran Gao,Lixiang Lai,Bin Li,Yejing Dai

The ability to endow robots with a sense of taste is a long-standing challenge in the field of robotics and sensory technology. Traditional chemical measurement devices for liquid identification are often bulky, slow, and costly, limiting their integration into mobile robots. To address this, we propose a novel Liquid Identification Taste System (LITS) that utilizes the triboelectric effect combined with deep learning for precise and efficient liquid identification. By exploiting the unique triboelectric signals generated at the solid-liquid interface, LITS accurately identifies a wide range of liquids based on their physical and chemical properties. Leveraging the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) algorithm, the system achieves a high classification accuracy of 96% for six common liquids. Additionally, the system demonstrates the potential to distinguish inedible liquids, such as HCl and NaOH, further highlighting its versatile application. This integration of triboelectric sensing with deep learning not only enhances the sensor’s resolution and sensitivity but also provides a scalable, cost-effective solution for real-time liquid identification, making it a promising step toward enabling robots to acquire a sense of taste.

Triboelectric probes integrated with deep learning for real-time online monitoring of suspensions in liquid transport

Yunpeng Zhu,Bin Luo,Xuelian Zou,Tao Liu,Song Zhang,Mingchao Chi,Yupei Sun,Keyang Jiang,Ling Liu,Fanzhen Meng,Shuangfei Wang,Shuangxi Nie,Zhiwei Wang

The stability of suspensions is critical to the smooth operation of the entire production system, especially during material storage, transportation and production. Nevertheless, the challenge of achieving cost-effective and real-time online monitoring remains, owing to the variability in the particles size and concentration. In this study, a triboelectric probe integrated with deep learning technology were employed to achieve self-powered, real-time, online monitoring of the particles size and concentration, whose variations would influence the distribution of surface charges, thereby inducing changes in the macroscopic dielectric constant of the suspension. Such triboelectric probes successfully captures output signals that reflect changes in the properties of the suspension, based on the coupled effects of contact electrification and electrostatic induction at the liquid-solid interface. Furthermore, a convolutional neural network model within deep learning technologies were established for handling the relevant signals, and performed an average recognition accuracy exceeding 98% for both the particles size and concentration. The integration of the triboelectric probe and deep learning technology presents a novel approach for real-time online monitoring of particles, holds significant implications for the production security monitoring in industries such as pharmaceuticals, chemical engineering , and food production.

Peng Lu,Yang Yang,Bin Luo,Chenchen Cai,Tao Liu,Song Zhang,Mingchao Chi,Tong Zhao,Jinlong Wang,Xiangjiang Meng,Yayu Bai,Yuzheng Shao,Guoli Du,Shuangfei Wang,Shuangxi Nie

Lightweight green polymer materials with exceptional toughness, high strength, and excellent ductility represent ideal candidates for enabling next-generation sustainable flexible electronics. However, the conflicting properties of material strength and toughness present a significant challenge in achieving an optimal combination of both attributes. In this study, a strong yet tough polymeric triboelectric material is prepared by constructing a multiscale reinforced network based on a nonsolvent-induced microphase separation strategy. The synergistic enhancement of strength and toughness is achieved by reinforcing non-covalent interactions within the polymer and constructing nanofibrous networks. The resulting triboelectric materials exhibited remarkable fracture toughness (78.6 MJ m −3 ), high tensile strength (42.5 MPa), an improvement in triboelectric output (71%), and promising recyclability. The integrated triboelectric wearable sensor maintained robust output signals. This study provides a novel solution for coordinating the conflicts between strength and toughness in heterogeneous polymer materials, showing significant potential in expanding their applications in flexible electronics and self-powered sensing technologies.

Surface modification to enhance the decarbonization performance of coal-series kaolin by triboelectric separation

Jingfeng He,Xin Zhang,Qiang Bai,Shibo Huang,Hao Chen,Chengjing Guo,Lingtao Zhu,Bin Yang

As a vital non-metallic mineral resource , cleaning and purification of coal-series kaolin is of importance for the following processing and utilization. This research focused on surface modification to enhance the decarbonization performance of coal-series kaolin by triboelectric separation. The effect of citric acid or kerosene on the surface modification and charging performance of kaolinite and coal was explored through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and charge-to-mass ratio measurements. The results indicated that owing to the adsorption of citric acid or kerosene, the decreased O content and the increased C content of coal enhanced the positive charge on the coal surface, while the decreased Al and Si content of kaolinite improved the negative charge on the kaolinite surface, which enlarged the charge-to-mass ratio gap between coal and kaolinite. Meanwhile, citric acid improved the charging performance of kaolinite and coal more significantly than kerosene. Furthermore, the influence of plate voltage, feeding speed, and friction wheel rotating velocity on the decarbonization performance of coal-series kaolin after surface modification was studied by triboelectric separation. The separation results indicated that surface modification with citric acid or kerosene improved the triboelectric separation efficiency of coal-series kaolin, and citric acid could realize the more effective separation of coal-series kaolin than kerosene. For 0.125–0.25 mm, 0.074–0.125 mm, and −0.074 mm coal-series kaolin, with citric acid modification, the valuable component recovery was 81.91%, 82.21%, and 82.83%, respectively, and the decarbonization efficiency was 44.66% (increased by 6.56%), 47.19% (increased by 7.00%), and 14.88% (increased by 2.53%), respectively. Our study provides vital guidance for enrichment and purification of coal-series kaolin resource via triboelectric separation.

Smitha Ankanahalli Shankaregowda,Chandrashekar Bananakere Nanjegowda,Shirong Guan,Jiaqi Huang,Jingyi Li,Rumana Farheen Sagade Muktar Ahmed,Krishnaveni Sannathammegowda,Anandraju Madaveeranahally Boregowda,Fei Wang,Chun Cheng

Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is an energy harvesting technology from widespread mechanical energy based on the combined effects of triboelectrification and electrostatic induction. TENG devices are promising to be integrated into human daily life and their stability in the ambient environment is quite crucial to guarantee robust output. This requirement is increasing exponentially for powering various wearable/portable electronics and still remains as a challenge. Herein, contact and separation mode-based, humidity- and temperature-resistant TENG (HT-TENG) is fabricated utilizing ethylene vinyl acetate and polytetrafluoroethylene tape as frictional layers. By harvesting biomechanical energy, the device could generate peak-to-peak open circuit voltage of ≈210 V and short-circuit current of ≈12.85 μA, respectively. The as-fabricated device is tolerant to fluctuating relative humidity ranging from 10% to 60% and temperature ranging from 10 to 60 °C. Further, the device is shown to charge 22 and 47 μF commercial capacitors to 3 V using rectifier bridges, glowing light-emitting diodes, powering digital wrist watches, and a calculator. Thus HT-TENG as an efficient power source reliably operates not only in typical conditions, but also in desert and frigid environments, thereby extending the applicability and commercialization of the device in the global environments.

PANI/PVDF-TrFE porous aerogel bulk piezoelectric and triboelectric hybrid nanogenerator based on in-situ doping and liquid nitrogen quenching

Shengrui Yu,Yongkang Zhang,Zhaohan Yu,Jiaqi Zheng,Yunming Wang,Huamin Zhou

Limited by the inherent properties of being difficult to be polarized due to its high resistance, PVDF bulk material with high β-phase content is hard to obtain by conventional methods which are suitable for membrane material. Herein, a novel strategy is proposed for the mass production of high-performance β-PVDF-based piezoelectric and triboelectric hybrid nanogenerator (PTNG) employing large-scale PVDF films or bulks by using liquid nitrogen to induce a phase transition and in-situ doped conductive polyaniline (PANI). Polyvinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene (PVDF-TrFE) with high piezoelectric coefficient , filled with PANI as a conductive material and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (SCMC) for increasing porosity, is hot pressed to obtain a composite piezoelectric polymer for PTNG. The subsequent “quenching” process of the piezoelectric polymer allows its high content of β-phase, which in turn makes the PTNG exhibit excellent piezoelectric properties . The optimal output of the PTNG, with a β-phase content of up to 71%, reaches 246 V and 122 μA at the frequency of 30 Hz and pressure of 0.31 MPa, and the power density is calculated to be 6.69 W/m 2 . Moreover, the PTNG can directly light up 119 blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with a size of 3 mm in series. The excellent performance verifies the reliability and accuracy of the method, that is, the β-phase transformation of disordered amorphous PVDF occurs at low temperature and high-rate quenching, and PANI opens the channel for carriers to move charge in the bulk material. This innovative method presented here is a simple and efficient approach for preparation of bulks with high β-phase and low internal resistance, which undoubtedly provides a feasible direction for the industrialization of high-performance PENGs.
