High Wear Resistance of POSS Grafted-Polyimide/Silica Composites under Atomic Oxygen Conditions

Huimin Qi,Yang Lei,Xuemei Lei,Ding Zhang,Yafeng Zhang,Jiaxin Yu,Baogang Guo

Polyimide-bearing retainer has been successfully used in space environment. However, the structural damage of polyimide induced by space irradiation limits its wide use. In order to further improve the atomic oxygen resistance of polyimide and comprehensively investigate the tribological mechanism of polyimide composites exposed in simulate space environment, 3-amino-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (NH2-POSS) was incorporated into a polyimide molecular chain and silica (SiO2) nanoparticles were in situ added into polyimide matrix and the combined effect of vacuum environment, and atomic oxygen (AO) on the tribological performance of polyimide was studied using bearing steel as the counterpart by a ball on disk tribometer. XPS analysis demonstrated the formation of protective layer induced by AO. The wear resistance of polyimide after modification was enhanced under AO attack. FIB-TEM confirmed that the inert protective layer of Si was formed on the counterpart during the sliding process. Mechanisms behind this are discussed based on the systematic characterization of worn surfaces of the samples and the tribofilms formed on the counterbody.Keywords:polyimide;NH2-POSS;tribological properties;atomic oxygen;tribofilm

Outstanding lubrication properties of carbon dot-based ionic liquids

Haocheng Wang,Yi Li,Songwei Zhang,Qinglun Che,Litian Hu,Jianjun Zhang

Although carbon dots (CDs) have attracted much attention due to their excellent lubricity and high load-carrying capacity as lubricant additives, the deficiency of easy agglomeration and the feature of solid state still restrict the application of CDs in the field of lubrication engineering. In order to break through the above limitations, novel liquid CD materials, carbon dot-based ionic liquids (CDILs), were synthesized via ionic modification of CDs with organic ammonium cations endowing new functions as novel liquid lubricants, which demonstrates that CDILs provide better lubrication performance than classical ILs ([BMIM][BF 4 ]) and at room and high temperature (30 °C and 100 °C). More importantly, the newly synthesized [N888H][CDs] containing tertiary ammonium cations with long alkyl chains exhibits the best lubrication performance. The resultant analyses give direct evidence that CD anions play a surprising role in improving the lubricity and protecting the steel/steel friction pairs, growing robust tribofilm with abundant CDs on the worn surfaces. Hence, it can not only offer fundamental insights into the formation of the tribofilm, but also provide a method for modifying CDs to promote their lubricity as liquid lubricants.

Low friction and wear self-assembly nano tribofilm of amphiphilic functionalized tea saponin in a water/oil phase

Fukang Deng,Tao Jiang,Kedi Yang,Fuchuan Huang

Developing an eco-friendly and energy efficient lubricant additive is important in the field of tribology . Herein, we successfully synthesized a series of green and efficient lubricant additives by grafting the n-carbon alkyl chain to tea saponin (TSCn, n = 8,10,12,14,16), nano tribofilm can self-assemble on sliding surfaces in both water and oil phases. Low frequency and high contact stress ball-on-disc reciprocating friction tests showed that TSC14 and TSC16 exhibit excellent lubricating performance. When 0.5 wt% of TSC14/TSC16 was added in DI water, the friction coefficient and wear rate were reduced by 67.69%/69.74% and 79.42%/81.65%, respectively. When 0.5 wt% of TSC14/TSC16 was added in PAO6, the friction coefficient and wear rate were reduced by 46.15%/42.86% and 86.19%/80.48%, respectively. In addition, the TSC14/TSC16 emulsion also exhibited good stability and lubricity.

Macroscopic fast superlubrication achieved on steel surfaces by Tannic acid-modified black phosphorus as additives

Shaowen Dong,YongFeng Yang,XiaoYang Ma,ChunJuan Cui,Wei Wang,JinJin Li

Friction and wear shorten equipment lifespan and cause energy loss, nd superlubrication achieved on steel-to-steel surfaces remains challenging. By adding tannic acid-modified black phosphorus nanosheets (TA-BP) to the tartaric acid/glycolic acid mixture (TCA/EG), macroscopic superlubrication can be achieved on engineering steel surfaces in just 5   s. Compared to TCA/EG, the wear rate of friction pairs decreased by 99% to 1.68×10⁻ 10 mm 3 ·N -1 ·m -1 . Surface analysis revealed that TA-BP rapidly deposits on friction pair surfaces, decomposes TCA into carbon films, and forms a composite friction film with BP that exhibits ultra-low shear strength. This tribofilm further reduces friction coefficient through synergistic interaction with lubricants. The study provides new insights for developing super lubricants suitable for mechanical applications.

The influence of polydiethylsiloxane (PDES) concentration on the tribolfilm of chlorophenyl silicone oil (CPSO) under high-temperature lubrication

Yan Meng,Luo Yue,Xiangli Wen,Peng Wei,Xue Zhou,Jie Cheng,Pengpeng Bai,Qian Zhao,Yonggang Meng,Yu Tian

As pivotal structural component, steels operating at high temperatures play a vital role in promoting the development of advanced equipment technology. Enduring and efficient lubricants are critical bottleneck for the construction of high-temperature frictional subsystems. Polydiethylsiloxane oil (PDES) significantly reduces the coefficient of friction (COF) (9.80–16.74 %) and wear rate (28.95–54.59 %) in the Si 3 N 4 –8Cr4Mo4V system without sulfur and phosphorus anti-wear additives at 250 °C. With only 1 wt% PDES, there is a remarkable 28.95 % wear rate reduction in the Si 3 N 4 –8Cr4Mo4V frictional system. The enhanced lubrication performance come from the Si–O tribofilm at lower PDES concentrations (1–15 wt%). Once exceeding a PDES concentration of 30 wt%, the as-formed Si–O tribofilm transitions to a Fe–Mo compound film, exhibiting superior friction reduction and wear resistance properties.

Effect of Nickel Acetyl Acetonate as Lubricant Additive in Base Oils with Different Molecular Structure on In-Situ Formation and Tribomechanism of Carbon-Based Tribofilms of Steel-Steel Sliding Pair

Peng Feng,Fan Shuguang,Song Ningning,Gao Chuanping,Zhang Shengmao,Zhang Yujuan

Nickel acetyl acetonate (Ni(acac) 2 ), a metal-organic compound, was directly dispersed in base oils alkylated naphthalene (AN-5), diisooctyl sebacate (DIOS), poly-α-olefin (PAO6), and mineral oil (liquid hydrocarbon mixtures:150 N) in the presence of commercial dispersant RF1151 (monoallyl poly(isobutylene succinimide). The tribological properties of the lubricants were tested with a four-ball friction and wear tester. The friction-induced in-situ formation of carbon films on rubbed steel surfaces under the catalysis of Ni(acac) 2 was investigated, and the as-formed carbon films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results show that Ni(acac) 2 added in the base oils can decompose to form metallic nickel to form nickel layer on the rubbed metal sub-surfaces and catalyze the degradation of the base oil molecules adsorbed to form carbon-based tribofilms. The carbon film formed from AN-5 with aromatic ring structure has a high degree of graphitization and the best friction-reducing and antiwear abilities, and those formed from PAO6 and 150 N with linear structure have a low degree of graphitization as well as good tribological properties. Under the lubrication of DIOS with Ni(acac) 2 , however, there is no carbon film formation while the tribological properties of the lubricant are relatively poor, due to the absence of the catalytic metallic nickel and nickel oxide layer on the rubbed metal sub-surface. Thanks to the catalytic effect of metallic nickel released from Ni(acac) 2 for the degradation of various base oils with different molecular structure, the present approach could provide a rational pathway to tune the in-situ formation of carbon-based tribofilm on rubbed steel surfaces so as to effectively reduce the friction and wear of steel-steel sliding pair.

Tribological properties and tribomechanism of nickel nanoparticles in-situ synthesized in rapeseed oil

Xu Wenya,Yang Guangbin,Zhang Shengmao,Xu Jun,Zhang Yujuan,Sun Tianhua,Song Ningning,Yu Laigui,Zhang Pingyu

Nickel (Ni) nanoparticles can be enriched on the surface of iron-based frictional pairs, which provides the possibility to get rid of the competitive adsorption between the polar species of vegetable oil and the surface-active nano-additives thereon. In this paper, nickel acetylacetonate was used as a precursor to in-situ synthesize nickel nanoparticles with an average diameter of about 12 nm in rapeseed oil (RO) as the reducing agent, surface modifier, and solvent as well. The tribological properties of the as-synthesized Ni nanoparticles were evaluated with a four-ball tribometer, and their tribomechanism was investigated based on the characterizations of the tribofilm on rubbed steel surfaces by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that the Ni nanoparticles in-situ prepared in the RO with a mass fraction of 0.3% can reduce the wear scar diameter (WSD) of the steel ball by 36%. This is because, on the one hand, the Ni nanoparticles are adsorbed on the rubbed steel surfaces to repair or fill up the micro-pits and grooves thereon. On the other hand, Ni nanoparticles participate in tribochemical reactions with atmospheric O and steel substrate to form the tribochemical reaction film on the rubbed steel surfaces with the assistance of friction-induced heat and applied normal load. In addition, an amorphous carbon film is formed on the rubbed surface via the carbonization of base oil under the catalysis of Ni nanoparticles. The adsorbed Ni layer, the tribochemical reaction film, and the carbon layer comprise a composite tribofilm composed of amorphous carbon, polar fatty acid, metallic nickel, iron oxides, and nickel oxides on the rubbed steel surfaces, which contributes to significantly improving the antiwear ability and load-carrying capacity of the RO for the steel–steel sliding pair.

In-situ formed carbon based composite tribo-film with ultra-high load bearing capacity

Jiasheng Hu,Yujuan Zhang,Guangbin Yang,Chuanping Gao,Ningning Song,Shengmao Zhang,Pingyu Zhang

Forming carbon based tribo-film in situ is an environmentally friendly and efficient way to solve the boundary lubrication problem. In this paper, the cubic nickel nanoparticles (average particle size 21.3 nm) modified by oleylamine were used as additives of poly-alpha-olefin (PAO6) for extreme pressure (EP) lubrication between bearing steel and stainless steel. It was found that in the range of 1.4–2.2 GPa contact pressure, nickel nanoparticles can catalyze the carbonization of PAO6 on the friction surface, which reduced the wear rate by 94%, the friction coefficient (COF) by 79%, and can withstand the extreme pressure friction of 4.2 GPa. XPS , EDS, TEM and FIB were used to analyze the microstructure, composition and chemical state of tribo-film. The tribo-film is composed of oxide layer, concrete structure layer and amorphous carbon layer. The oxide layer formed by oxidation of steel surface produced better binding force with the steel substrate. Nickel nanoparticles catalyze the carbonization of PAO6 to form a concrete structure with nickel nanocrystals embedded in the amorphous carbon phase, which provides high bearing capacity. The carbon layer graphitizes under the friction induction to form a lubricating layer with low friction characteristics. Oleylamine modified nickel nanoparticles is expected to be widely used as an environmentally friendly EP additive .

Enhanced ability of halloysite nanotubes to form multilayer nanocrystalline tribofilms by thermal activation

Yuan Qin,Mingxia Wu,Yongfeng Yang,Yi Yang,Gang Yang

To improve the antiwear properties of halloysite nanotubes as an oil-based additive, the effect of thermal activation on the tribological properties of halloysite was investigated. The results showed that the anti-wear properties of the halloysite and calcined products are improved by 34.54% and 45.45 –54.76%, respectively, compared with the base oil. The outstanding wear resistance of the surface lubricated by the calcined product is attributed to the faster and easier formation of a multilayer nanocrystalline tribofilm, which mainly contains the nanocrystalline transition layer, the oxide film (composed of nanoscale iron oxide , Al 2 O 3 , SiO x ) and the amorphous carbon film . The findings here provide new insights into optimizing the tribological properties of phyllosilicate and enrich the tribological mechanism of halloysites.

Sandwich-like tribofilm induced highly effective lubrication for MoDTP coupled with hydroxy-magnesium silicate (MSH)

Duan Chunjian,Xie Shuangshuang,Ye Wenyong,Gao Chuanping,Zhang Shengmao,Zhang Pingyu

In the field of lubrication enhancement, nanomaterials are becoming increasingly important. However, the issue of their stable dispersion in lubrication oil remains a persistent challenge. To address this issue, we synthesized two distinct morphologies of MSH nanomaterials , subsequently modifying them with alkylsilane (OTMS) to enhance their dispersion stability . Particularly, the 1.0 wt% of OTMS-modified laminar MSH (LMSH@OTMS) combined with 0.3 wt% molybdenum dialkyldithiophosphate (MoDTP) exhibited remarkable lubricating performance in PAO10. The result indicate there is a synergistic effect between two components, resulting in the formation of a main sandwich-like tribofilm. The tribofilm is comprised of two distinct layers: a lubricating layer derived from MoDTP and an anti-wear layer stemming from LMSH@OTMS. These findings offer significant potential for enhancing durability of mechanical systems .

Graphene-induced reconstruction of the sliding interface assisting the improved lubricity of various tribo-couples

Xuan Yin,Fan Wu,Xinchun Chen,Jianxun Xu,Pu Wu,Jinjin Li,Chenhui Zhang,Jianbin Luo

Graphene has emerged as one of the most promising solid lubricants owing to their exceptional lubricity. The atomically thin nature and its ability to conformally adsorb on the sliding surfaces provide unprecedented pathways for modifying the friction and wear behaviors of the mechanical moving parts. Here, the tribological responses of several representative tribo-couples including bare steel, diamond-like carbon and ceramic materials are investigated to explore the potentials of graphene as surface modifier. Specific emphasis is devoted to the graphene-induced reconstruction of the sliding interface and the growth mechanism of nanostructured tribofilms formed on the contact surface using high-resolution microscopic technique. The results reveal the unique properties of graphene regarding the friction reduction and wear protection irrespective of the types of counterpart materials, graphene-processed methods, dry or humid tests environments. Nevertheless, the interfacial features and the bonding characteristics of the tribofilms are diversified in each specific rubbing case, demonstrating the distinguished adaption capacity of graphene to the tribo-testing conditions. The present findings shed light on the lubrication phenomenon of graphene at the microscale and may provide useful design criterion for 2D-based solid lubricants.

In-situ Synthesis of Nickel Nanoparticles in Olive Oil and Study of Their Tribological Properties as Vegetable Oil Additives

Xu Wenya,Yang Guangbin,Zhang Shengmao,Zhang Yujuan,Fan Shuguang,Yu Laigui,Zhang Pingyu

Vegetable oil-based lubricants have a tendency to replace traditional petroleum-based lubricants due to their biodegradability, high flash point, low volatility, and low cost. However, polar molecules such as fatty acids in vegetable oil compete for adsorption with nanoparticles during rubbing process, resulting in imperfect tribological performance of nanoparticles. Magnetic nanoadditives can be adsorbed on the contact surface of iron-based friction materials through magnetic effects, which provides a new idea for solving competitive adsorption problems between additives and base oil. In this study, Ni nanoparticles with a particle size of approximately 15.6 nm were synthesized in-situ in olive oil using nickel acetylacetone as the nickel source and olive oil as the modifier and solvent required for the reaction, which is a simple, efficient, and environmentally friendly in-situ synthesis method. The as-synthesized Ni nanoparticles can significantly improve the antiwear capabilities of olive oil, reducing the wear scar diameter by 30%. The morphology and elemental analysis of wear scar indicated that a composite tribofilm including nickel, nickel oxide, iron oxide, carbon film, and polar fatty acid molecules in olive oil is formed on the rubbing surface, greatly improving the antiwear performance, which opens up an opportunity for the further application of new green nanolubricants.
