High Wear Resistance of POSS Grafted-Polyimide/Silica Composites under Atomic Oxygen Conditions

Huimin Qi,Yang Lei,Xuemei Lei,Ding Zhang,Yafeng Zhang,Jiaxin Yu,Baogang Guo

Polyimide-bearing retainer has been successfully used in space environment. However, the structural damage of polyimide induced by space irradiation limits its wide use. In order to further improve the atomic oxygen resistance of polyimide and comprehensively investigate the tribological mechanism of polyimide composites exposed in simulate space environment, 3-amino-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (NH2-POSS) was incorporated into a polyimide molecular chain and silica (SiO2) nanoparticles were in situ added into polyimide matrix and the combined effect of vacuum environment, and atomic oxygen (AO) on the tribological performance of polyimide was studied using bearing steel as the counterpart by a ball on disk tribometer. XPS analysis demonstrated the formation of protective layer induced by AO. The wear resistance of polyimide after modification was enhanced under AO attack. FIB-TEM confirmed that the inert protective layer of Si was formed on the counterpart during the sliding process. Mechanisms behind this are discussed based on the systematic characterization of worn surfaces of the samples and the tribofilms formed on the counterbody.Keywords:polyimide;NH2-POSS;tribological properties;atomic oxygen;tribofilm

Enhanced Tribocatalytic Degradation of Organic Pollutants by ZnO Nanoparticles of High Crystallinity

Hua Lei,Xiaodong Cui,Xuchao Jia,Jianquan Qi,Zhu Wang,Wanping Chen

More and more metal oxide nanomaterials are being synthesized and investigated for degradation of organic pollutants through harvesting friction energy, yet the strategy to optimize their performance for this application has not been carefully explored up to date. In this work, three commercially available ZnO powders are selected and compared for tribocatalytic degradation of organic dyes, among which ZnO-1 and ZnO-2 are agglomerates of spherical nanoparticles around 20 nm, and ZnO-3 are particles of high crystallinity with a regular prismatic shape and smooth surfaces, ranging from 50 to 150 nm. Compared with ZnO-1 and ZnO-2, ZnO-3 exhibits a much higher tribocatalytic degradation performance, and a high degradation rate constant of 6.566 × 10−2min−1is achieved for RhB, which is superior compared with previous tribocatalytic reports. The stability and universality of ZnO-3 were demonstrated through cycling tests and degradation of different types of dyes. Furthermore, the mechanism of tribocatalysis revealed that h+ was the main active species in the degradation process by ZnO. This work highlights the great significance of high crystallinity rather than a large specific surface area for the development of high-performance tribocatalysts and demonstrates the great potential of tribocatalysis for water remediation. Keywords:tribocatalysis;friction energy harvesting;zinc oxide;dye decomposition

Tribological performance of organic molybdenum in the presence of organic friction modifier

Weiwei Wang,Zhuangzhuang Liu,Qimin Song,Xindi Zhang,Shengkai Jiao,Yao Xu,Quanda Xu,Dezun Sheng

The tribological performance of organic molybdenum in the present of organic friction modifier was investigated in this study. Three types of organic friction modifiers were selected, which are Glycerol monooleate, Pentaerythritol and N , N -Dimethylhexadecylamine. The organic molybdenum are MoDTC, MoDDP and molybdenum amide. Friction coefficient and wear were studied in block-on-ring test rig with steel test specimens. Experimental results indicate the Pentaerythritol shows synergistic effect with MoDTC in wide range temperature, while increased the friction coefficient of molybdenum amide in high temperature. N , N -Dimethylhexadecylamine shows synergistic effect with molybdenum amide, while hindered the friction reduction performance of MoDTC in low temperature. The presence of Glycerol monooleate reduced friction coefficient of MoDTC in low temperature, while increased the friction coefficient of molybdenum amide in most situations. All the tested organic friction modifiers improved the friction reduction performance of MoDDP. Most of the tested organic friction modifiers reduced the wear of organic molybdenum. The PT shows the best anti-wear performance with MoDTC. The tribo-chemical products in test specimens lubricated with different lubricant formulas indicate that the presences of Pentaerythritol promotes the production of MoS 2 in MoDTC. N , N -Dimethylhexadecylamine promotes the production of MoS 2 in molybdenum amide. The side products of MoO 1.6 S 1.6 and Cr/MoS 2 of MoDDP in high temperature lead to high friction coefficient.

Outstanding lubrication properties of carbon dot-based ionic liquids

Haocheng Wang,Yi Li,Songwei Zhang,Qinglun Che,Litian Hu,Jianjun Zhang

Although carbon dots (CDs) have attracted much attention due to their excellent lubricity and high load-carrying capacity as lubricant additives, the deficiency of easy agglomeration and the feature of solid state still restrict the application of CDs in the field of lubrication engineering. In order to break through the above limitations, novel liquid CD materials, carbon dot-based ionic liquids (CDILs), were synthesized via ionic modification of CDs with organic ammonium cations endowing new functions as novel liquid lubricants, which demonstrates that CDILs provide better lubrication performance than classical ILs ([BMIM][BF 4 ]) and at room and high temperature (30 °C and 100 °C). More importantly, the newly synthesized [N888H][CDs] containing tertiary ammonium cations with long alkyl chains exhibits the best lubrication performance. The resultant analyses give direct evidence that CD anions play a surprising role in improving the lubricity and protecting the steel/steel friction pairs, growing robust tribofilm with abundant CDs on the worn surfaces. Hence, it can not only offer fundamental insights into the formation of the tribofilm, but also provide a method for modifying CDs to promote their lubricity as liquid lubricants.

Elucidating the Friction Catalytic Lubrication Mechanism of Ag Nanoparticles Loaded on MOFs

Hanwei Wang,Haijie Chen,Jian Zhang,Zhiwen Zheng,Xiaolong Liu,Haizhong Wang,Dapeng Feng,Dan Qiao

The low interlayer forces of 2D nanosheets as nano additives are conducive to enhancing the tribological performance of lubricating oil. In this work, ultrathin 2D Co-BDC MOFs nanosheets are successfully synthesized with ultrasonic assistance, and Ag nanoparticles are successfully loaded onto their surfaces via chemical adsorption. The Ag@Co-BDC nanocomposites are demonstrated to significantly improve the tribological performance of PAO10 base oil, leading to a 16.7% reduction in the friction coefficient and a 61.5% decrease in the wear rate. Moreover, macroscopic reaction further confirmed that the introduction of Ag@Co-BDC nano additives facilitated the tribochemical reaction during friction. This work successfully synthesized a novel lubricating additive with excellent tribology performance and provided a preliminary explanation of the mechanism of the tribochemical reaction.

A new polyimide matrix composite to improve friction-induced chatter performance through reducing fluctuation in friction force

Shutian Liu,Conglin Dong,Chengqing Yuan,Xiuqin Bai,Ye Tian,Guoliang Zhang

Stabilizing friction force of polymer composites’ wear interfaces during frictional processes is useful to suppress or eliminate the friction-induced chatter and noise behaviors in low velocity. A new Polyimide (PI) matrix composite material composed of Polyimide and MoS 2 nano particles was fabricated and tested. The experimental wear tests were conducted to investigate relationship between friction forces, friction-induced chatters and noises under dry and water conditions in low friction velocity . The typical tribological properties of modified composite and some typical mechanical properties were analyzed to reveal the mechanism of MoS 2 nano particles on frictional behaviors reduction. The results showed that the transformations and formations of MoS 2 tribo-film presented excellent COF reduction on modified PI composite by more than 50%, and also could effectively reduce PI deformations on wear surface which obviously decreased friction forces and their fluctuating amplitudes. These cases endowed the modified PI composite excellent performances on friction-induced chatter and noise reductions compared to the pure PI even though some mechanical properties were weakened. The understanding gained herein is helpful for comprehending the friction-induced chatter reduction of the MoS 2 filler on polymer matrix composites and future designing of polymer matrix composites with low friction and good chatter and noise reductions in low friction velocity.

Low friction and wear self-assembly nano tribofilm of amphiphilic functionalized tea saponin in a water/oil phase

Fukang Deng,Tao Jiang,Kedi Yang,Fuchuan Huang

Developing an eco-friendly and energy efficient lubricant additive is important in the field of tribology . Herein, we successfully synthesized a series of green and efficient lubricant additives by grafting the n-carbon alkyl chain to tea saponin (TSCn, n = 8,10,12,14,16), nano tribofilm can self-assemble on sliding surfaces in both water and oil phases. Low frequency and high contact stress ball-on-disc reciprocating friction tests showed that TSC14 and TSC16 exhibit excellent lubricating performance. When 0.5 wt% of TSC14/TSC16 was added in DI water, the friction coefficient and wear rate were reduced by 67.69%/69.74% and 79.42%/81.65%, respectively. When 0.5 wt% of TSC14/TSC16 was added in PAO6, the friction coefficient and wear rate were reduced by 46.15%/42.86% and 86.19%/80.48%, respectively. In addition, the TSC14/TSC16 emulsion also exhibited good stability and lubricity.

Shape-controllable synthesis of mullite whisker and its effect on tribological behavior of resin-based friction materials

Zhengjia Ji,Shenqi Wang,Wanyue Luo,Hao Wu,Xiaolei Li,Hongyun Jin,Shuen Hou

The development and design of fillers aid in improving the tribological performances of friction materials. Herein, the effects of the aspect ratio of mullite whisker on the tribological properties were studied. Mullite whiskers were prepared by the sol–gel process and the aspect ratio of the whisker was controlled by introducing aluminum fluoride (AlF 3 ). The aspect ratio increased significantly at first and then decreased with increasing the contents of AlF 3 . The experimental results show that higher aspect ratio whiskers stabilized the friction coefficient while increased the wear rate. In addition, the composite with mullite whisker grown in excessive AlF 3 (20%) resulted in a higher friction coefficient compared to adding inadequate AlF 3 (10%). The Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX) results indicated that higher aspect ratio of whisker was more likely to fall off from matrix which sequentially being compacted and formed contact plateaus during the friction process. In conclusion, it was found that abrasive wear and adhesive wear were the dominant wear mechanism. Highlights The aspect ratio of mullite whisker was controlled within the range of 6 ~ 21. The tribological properties of whiskers reinforced composites were studied. The morphology of the mullite whisker affects the friction stability. The flaky mullite whisker can improve wear resistance of the composites.

Quick ultra-low friction in ceramics induced by high-strength nano surface film

Jinlu Li,Tianyi Sui,Haolin Li,Feifei Zhao,Xuan Bao,Guochen Ning,Yuan Zhang,Jingtao Wang,Bin Lin

Serious wear during running-in period significantly limited the application of ceramics in industry. With poor activity, ceramic contact surface is hard to be protected during friction. In this study, ceramics tribological properties are significantly enhanced and ultra-low friction is achieved in short time by formation of high-strength nano surface film. Copper nanoparticles with linear and cubic morphologies were synthesized and dispersed into water-based lubricants for silicon nitride ceramic friction pairs. A 1:1 mixture of copper nanoparticles with linear and cubic morphologies exhibits the best lubrication performance at an optimal concentration of 0.2 wt%. The result shows an 87.01 % reduction in the coefficient of friction, and a wear rate of 0.18 % of that obtained in the case of deionized water. High-strength protective film is found generated on the ceramic surface, which reduces wear and promotes the forming process of ultra-smooth surface to achieve ultra-low friction. Based on the characterization results, lubrication mechanism is elucidated, quick generation of surface film with high strength is the essential for reducing wear and running-in period.

Patterns and flow in frictional fluid dynamics

Sandnes B.,Flekkøy E.G.,Knudsen H.A.,Måløy K.J.,See H.

Pattern-forming processes in simple fluids and suspensions have been studied extensively, and the basic displacement structures, similar to viscous fingers and fractals in capillary dominated flows, have been identified. However, the fundamental displacement morphologies in frictional fluids and granular mixtures have not been mapped out. Here we consider Coulomb friction and compressibility in the fluid dynamics, and discover surprising responses including highly intermittent flow and a transition to quasi-continuodynamics. Moreover, by varying the injection rate over several orders of magnitude, we characterize new dynamic modes ranging from stick-slip bubbles at low rate to destabilized viscous fingers at high rate. We classify the fluid dynamics into frictional and viscous regimes, and present a unified description of emerging morphologies in granular mixtures in the form of extended phase diagrams.

A comparative study on wear behavior and mechanism of styrene butadiene rubber under dry and wet conditions

Y.P. Wu,Y. Zhou,J.L. Li,H.D. Zhou,J.M. Chen,H.C. Zhao

As the main component of the tire treads, styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) is widely used to make tire tread for cars in the rubber industry; understanding the friction and wear properties of tire tread rubber is important to improve the safety of the cars. This study aimed to investigate the tribological properties and wear mechanism of SBR under dry and wet conditions; an improved commercial block-on-ring friction testing machine was used to conduct sliding wear tests between SBR and marble block. The friction coefficients , wear rates and wear debris were analyzed under dry and wet conditions in detail. In addition, the contribution of adhesion and hysteresis components to friction coefficient that originated from the changes of loading was discussed. The results indicated that the applied loads have a significant effect on the friction and wear properties of the SBR composites. Under the condition of dry friction , wear losses increased with the increasing load and the main wear mechanism is both severe adhesive and abrasive wear ; under the condition of water existence, the applied loads would not affect the wear losses, and the wear mechanism is abrasive wear. The knowledge gained in this study is anticipated to provide the theoretical data for a wear theory study of SBR tire tread and can be used for the optimization of designing higher performance tire treads.

Effect of functional groups on tribological properties of lubricants and mechanism investigation

Yu Hongxiang,Chen Haijie,Zheng Zhiwen,Qiao Dan,Feng Dapeng,Gong Zhenbin,Dong Guojun

Nine organic compounds were utilized as model lubricants to investigate the impact of functional groups on tribological performances. Nonanoic Acid with carboxyl showed the best lubrication properties, and fluid film and tribofilm were coexistent in its friction test, bringing a low friction coefficient and wear rate. In addition, the lubricant with low friction coefficient corresponded to high adsorption energy in density functional theory (DFT) calculations. And the lubricant forming adsorption film with large surface energy displayed small wear rate in friction test. Moreover, adsorption energies positively correlated surface energies. Based on the experimental results, the action mechanism of functional groups on tribological properties of lubricants was proposed. Various functional groups make lubricant molecules show different adsorption energies and surface energies. Lubricant molecules with high adsorption energy are more likely to adsorb on substrates and form a vertical monolayer, which can maintain a regular molecular brush structure during friction and bring a low friction coefficient. And lubricant molecules with high surface energy may be more prone having tribochemical reactions during friction and forming protective tribofilm, which leads to a low wear rate.
