Thin film composite (TFC) technology has been widely used to prepare reverse osmosis (RO) membrane, in which the relationship between support layer and selective layer plays a significant role. To thoroughly clarify the influence of support layer pore size on the properties of selective layer, herein, we prepared a series of polysulfone (PSf) support layers with different surface pore sizes by adjusting casting solution concentrations. Afterward, polyamide (PA) selective layers were prepared on top of PSf support layers via interfacial polymerization method. Detailed studies were performed to illustrate membrane-forming dynamics, TFC morphologies and membrane performances. The pore size of support layer has a substantial effect on the aqueous monomer diffusion behavior as well as selective layer morphologies and overall performances; specifically, resulting in differences in both thickness and roughness of PA layer and also inducing different membrane performances. Combined with anti-backflush experiments, we also provide an insight view into the interfacial adhesion between support layer and selective layer.

Nanofiltration (NF) technology is increasingly used in the water treatment and separation fields. However, most research has focused on refining the selective layer while overlooking the potential role of the supporting layer. With expertise in ultrathin polymer films, particularly in the production of polyethylene (PE) membranes, we explore the possibility of improving NF membrane performance by precisely controlling the structure and surface properties of the ultrathin supporting layer in this work. Here, we introduced an innovative NF membrane that used a submicrometer ultrathin PE membrane produced through a biaxial stretching process, which is significantly thinner than commercial PE membranes available on the market. The core innovations are as follows: first, we focused on precise control of the supporting layer rather than just the selective layer, achieving significant enhancements in overall NF membrane performance; second, the ultrathin PE supporting layer served as a tunable interface for interfacial polymerization, offering possibilities for structural control of the selective layer and advancing membrane performance innovations. The resulting NF membrane boasts an overall thickness of ∼630 nm, which represents the thinnest NF membrane documented to date. This ultrathin NF membrane showed an ultrahigh Cl–/SO42– selectivity of 338.03, placing it at the forefront of existing literature. This study sheds light on the important role of the supporting layer in the preparation of selective layers. We believe that this approach has the potential to contribute to the development of ultrathin, high-performance NF membranes.

This paper reports a micro gas chromatographic column (μGCC) with in-situ growing macro-porous silicon as the stationary phase support layer. The macro-porous silicon stationary phase support layer (MPSL) with uniform thickness was fabricated in-situ on the inner surface of the μGCC channels by metal-assisted chemical etching. In order to avoid the negative effect of uneven thickness of the stationary phase, a 10 nm alumina film was deposited as the stationary phase on the MPSL using the atomic layer deposition technique. The macro-porous structure and high specific surface area of the MPSL provide longer diffusion paths and larger mass transfer interfaces for the analytes, which reduces the longitudinal gas diffusion and mass transfer resistance, thus improving the column efficiency. The μGCC with the MPSL achieved a 1306.7% increase in the theoretical plate number and a 195.0 % improvement in the resolution for n-nonane compared with the μGCC without the MPSL.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is the most important support for patients with severe cardiopulmonary failure. As the key component, the oxygenation membrane has suffered the risk of blood coagulation and plasma leakage in the long term. Herein, we prepare a sulfonate polyamide film on poly(ether sulfone) (PES) support via interfacial polymerization modulated by a sulfonate amine monomer. The pore diameter of the prepared polyamide film is ∼3.67 Å (exactly a little smaller than the water molecule, the base of plasma). By such size repulsion effect, the polyamide film demonstrates remarkable plasma leakage resistance (confirmed by human plasma circulation). Moreover, the introduction of the sulfonate amine monomer effectively enhances the anticoagulation performance (activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) prolongation >10 s). In addition, the PES support used for interfacial polymerization is modified and realizes improved porosity, hydrophilicity, and positive charge potential, resulting in lower mass transfer resistance and improved interfacial strength between the support and polyamide film. ECMO-simulated circulation tests prove the facilitation effect on gas exchange derived from the support modification and interfacial polymerization modulation. This work provides a composite membrane simultaneously with significant plasma leakage resistance and anticoagulation properties for efficient blood oxygenation.
