The anionic flotation of fluorite from barite using gelatinized starch as the depressant

Siyuan Yang,Yanling Xu,Cheng Liu,Lingyun Huang,Zhiqiang Huang,Hongqiang Li

As an important non-metallic mineral widely used in industry, fluorite is normally associate with barite in nature. Anionic flotation is the most efficient method to separate fluorite from barite in mineral processing while the critical point of successful separation lies on the depressant. A cheap and eco-friendly depressant, corn starch, has been gelatinized and introduced in this study. Microflotation experiments showed that the fluorite and barite presented non-selectivity in flotation with the addition of anionic collector, sodium oleate (NaOl). By use of the gelatinized starch (GS), barite was selective depressed, leading to the high separation efficiency. The phenomenon was confirmed by the flotation of artificial mixed minerals. Zeta potential measurements demonstrated that NaOl can be adsorbed on the fluorite surface while it cannot interact with the barite in the presence of GS. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated that the adsorption of GS on the fluorite surface mainly through physical bonding while the stronger hydrogen bonding may determine the interaction between GS and barite surface.

Enhanced bioavailability of curcumin amorphous nanocomposite prepared by a green process using modified starch

Changying Chen,Zhixing Wang,Hongliang Fu,Guoqi Yu,Xiang Luo,Kewu Zhu

Curcumin (Cur), a bioactive compound extracted from plants, has attracted widespread attention due to its multiple pharmacological activities . However, the low bioavailability due to the inherent limitations in water solubility, chemical stability, and permeability poses great challenges for realizing its clinical potentials. In the current study, octenyl succinic anhydride-modified starch (OSA-S), a renewable and biodegradable biopolymer , was employed to fabricate Cur amorphous composite nanoparticles (Cur/OSA-S NPs) through a solvent-free pH-driven method with the aim to enhance Cur's bioavailability by improving its solubility and stability. Cur/OSA-S NPs, with mean sizes of about 128.9 ± 8.6 nm, encapsulation efficiencies of about 90.0 %, and the drug loading capacities around 51.0 ± 0.2 %, were successfully prepared. Cur was found to be dispersed within the composite nanoparticles in amorphous state as confirmed by the XRD and DSC characterizations. In addition, Cur/OSA-S NPs offers excellent storage, thermal and light stability, excellent re-dispersibility, and approximately 92 times better solubility than the original Cur. Furthermore, studies of dissolution and the parallel artificial membrane permeability assay (PAMPA) confirmed enhanced dissolution rates and in vitro permeabilities of Cur/OSA-S NPs. Cancer cell viability and uptake experiments revealed that Cur/OSA-S NPs possessed more potent inhibitory effects on cancer cell proliferation compared to the raw Cur. The results obtained from the current study demonstrated the effectiveness of OSA-S for manufacturing Cur amorphous composite nanoparticles with enhanced solubility, stability, and permeability, which might be valuable for further development of Cur based products for treatment of various diseases.

The effect of the modified starch with side chain on the morphology of copper particles and the antibacterial properties of starch/copper composite material

Xiurong Hou,Huashan Wang,Wei Geng,Lishuang Yang,Jiayue Wang

In this paper, corn starch was modified by acetylation, esterification and amination, and the effects of different modifications on the structure and physicochemical properties of starch were investigated. And starch/copper composite materials were prepared by adding copper salts to the different modified starch, and the influence of modified starch and their additive amount on the morphology of copper and the antimicrobial properties were discussed. The results showed that: the contact angle of the modified starch was about 50° and exhibited hydrophilic-hydrophobic transition; the esterified starch had the smallest heat weight loss; the different modifications caused damage to the structure of the starch, which changed from the original smooth surface to a rough and wrinkled surface; hexahedral morphology copper particles were obtained by replacing them with the modified starch; the antimicrobial effect of the prepared starch/copper composite materials were related to the modification mode of starch, in which aminated starch show the best antimicrobial effect. This study provides a theoretical basis for the selection of starch type in the preparation of starch/copper composite materials in the future, which can also be used as antimicrobial components in other applications.

Creation of fully degradable and mechanically robust poly(4-hydroxybutyrate) films by filling modified starch

Xinyi Chen,Yitong Ding,Mingjiao Li,Hao Wu,Ze Kan,Zhibo Li

Chemically synthesized poly(4-hydroxybutyrate) (P4HB) is a new generation of biomass-derived and degradable semi-crystalline polymer with good comprehensive properties, but high costs limit its application. Starch, as an inexpensive natural polymer , can reduce the cost of P4HB products. However, starch lacks thermoplastic behavior and has poor compatibility with P4HB, thus its extensive use will inevitably impair the mechanical properties of P4HB. In this study, the ball-milling starch grafting process is adopted, which can simultaneously solve the two major deficiencies of starch, and the prepared ball-milling starch-g-polycaprolactone (BSt-g-PCL) has thermoplasticity and better compatibility with P4HB. BSt-g-PCL can melt near 55 °C, and the interweaving of its molecular chains with P4HB reduces the binding energy ( E interaction ) of both, making the phase interface blurred or even disappear. Therefore, the elongation at break retention ( R EB ) of P4HB/BSt-g-PCL can increase from 37.1 % to 74.3 % compared to P4HB/starch at the same filling (70 Phr). Additionally, BSt-g-PCL can exert the effect of accelerating P4HB degradation and still make it maintain excellent anti-aging ability. The ball-milling starch graft process provides a simple and effective method for the preparation of inexpensive fully biodegradable P4HB composite films with excellent mechanical properties.

Preparation and Application of Zwitterion Modified Starch Catalyzed by HRP-ACAC Binary System

Wenda Wang,Ning Zhang,Yifan Cui,Qiang Wang,Man Zhou,Ping Wang,Yuanyuan Yu

Enzymatic modification, compared with traditional starch (St) chemical modification methods, avoids using toxic solvents and toxic catalysts. The horseradish peroxidase (HRP), being the most commonly employed natural green initiator, has found extensive application in starch grafting modification as a substitute for chemical initiators. HRP-catalyzed grafting of starch with vinyl zwitterionic monomers has not been reported. Here, modified starch (St-PSBMA) is first synthesized by grafting zwitterionic sulfobetaine [2-(Methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) (SBMA) onto starch by HRP/Acetylacetone(ACAC) binary initiation system catalyzed. The modified starch-based hydrogel is then prepared by the repeated freeze-thaw method. Compared with native starch-based hydrogels, which bind water molecules only through hydrogen bonding, the ability of modified starch-based hydrogels to bind water molecules is enhanced by ionic solvation. The modified starch hydrogels also have excellent antiprotein adsorption and antibacterial properties due to the presence of a strong hydration layer. The modified starch-based hydrogel also has excellent sensitivity and stability when used as a sensor for detecting joint motion. The binary HRP initiating system, employed in this study instead of the traditional three-component HRP initiating system, offers a novel and promising approach for grafting modification of starch without the need for strong oxidant hydrogen peroxide.

Effects of maltose on stability and rheological properties of orange oil-in-water emulsion formed by OSA modified starch

Chao Li,Xiong Fu,Faxing Luo,Qiang Huang

Effects of maltose on the stability and rheological properties of orange oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion formed by octenyl succinic anhydride modified waxy corn starch (OS-starch) were investigated. Emulsion samples were prepared using a jet homogenizer. Creaming behavior, droplet size distribution and rheological properties of emulsions during storage were studied. Results showed that the emulsion with no maltose was unstable over a quiescent storage period of one month, while the emulsions containing maltose appeared relatively stable. The OS-starch played a critical role in stabilizing emulsion by adsorbing at oil–water interface. Maltose assisted the emulsion against creaming, flocculation , and coalescence. Rheological results showed that the viscoelastic properties of the emulsions increased with increasing maltose content. Maltose increased the viscosity of emulsion, and enhanced the elastic structure of emulsion through interaction with OS-starch and water. Increase of viscoelasticity of the emulsion system retarded oil droplets free motion and strengthened the mutual acting force between droplets, thereby delaying creaming, flocculation, and coalescence of oil droplets.

Further understanding the unique structure derived from interaction of soy proteins with acylated starch of various chain-length short-chain fatty acids

Sheng Ke,Anqi Wang,Peng Yu,Xuanyu Wang,Guandi Chen,Yanhong Lin,Chris Blanchard,Zhongkai Zhou,Guohua Zhao

Waxy maize starch was acylated via different chain-length of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) (referred to AS, PS and BS, respectively), followed by investigation of their structural characteristics of complexes formed between the acylated starch and soy protein isolate (SPI) via FTIR, NMR, XRD and CLSM, etc. This is the first time to reveal that ζ-potential value of the complexes between two polymers was proportional to chain length of SCFAs. The occurrence of new peak at 1580 cm −1 in AS-SPI, PS-SPI and BS-SPI might imply the interaction between NH 2 group of SPI and hydroxyl group of acylated starch. Consistently, disappearance of characteristic peaks OH-2, 3 (5.40, 5.50 ppm) from 1 H-shift in NMR further evidenced covalent reactions between two polymers. Interestingly, although acylation reduced crystallinity, new diffraction peaks at 7.5°, 14.5° and 19.8° of WMS-PS and WMS-BS revealed the formation of V-type crystalline structure rather than WMS-AS, indicating the importance of chain length of SCFAs for manipulating complexes structure. Furthermore, G′ of BS-SPI complexes was greater than G″ under various frequency, but not for other types of complexes. Meanwhile, BS-SPI complexes demonstrated a better encapsulation wall for probiotics protection against gastrointestinal digestion, which might indicate association of structural characteristics with functionality.

Application of Modified Starch @ Phenolic Resin Flame Retardant Coating on RPUF

Haoping Peng,Dingding Li,Shouwu Xu,Yonggang Zhao,Yun Lei,Haoran Zhu,Qigui Tan,Zhiwei Li

In this study, sodium tripolyphosphate was used to modify starch, resulting in a novel starch-based flame retardant. The phenolic resin was employed as the matrix, with the starch-based flame retardant incorporated as a filler and applied to the surface of rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) to prepare the composite material. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the coating effectively penetrated the RPUF framework, forming a strong and tightly bonded layer with excellent coverage. The combustion and mechanical properties of the composite material were investigated. The results showed that, in vertical combustion tests, the composite material met the UL940-5VA standard. In thermogravimetric analysis, the composite exhibited a 42.71% increase in char residue compared with the RPUF. In three-point bending pulverization resistance tests, the composite demonstrated a 28.42% reduction in chalking compared with the RPUF coated solely with phenolic resin. This study paves a new path for the practical application of bio-based flame retardants.

Polyurethane prepolymer-modified high-content starch-PBAT films

Chenhao Zhang,Fangping Chen,Wei Meng,Chengqiang Li,Ruihua Cui,Zhean Xia,Changsheng Liu

We report a modified starch-poly(butylene adipate co-terephthalate) (PBAT) film (MSPF) prepared by extrusion blowing. Polyurethane prepolymer (PUP), was modified to the starch to enhance the compatibility. Different contents of amylose was blended with PBAT for improving mechanical strength and oxygen-barrier properties of MSPF. The microstructures, crystallinity, mechanical properties, oxygen-barrier capacity of MSPF were thoroughly evaluated. The result showed that MSPF with high starch content and excellent performances was successfully prepared with the synergy of PUP modification, amylose introduction and extrusion blowing. The crystallinity, hydrophobicity, oxygen-barrier properties and mechanical properties of MSPF increased with the increasing amylose content. The maximum tensile strength and elongation at break of MSPF reached 10.6 MPa and 805.6 %, respectively, even at the high starch content of 50 %. The result demonstrated that MSPF having excellent mechanical properties and oxygen-barrier properties could be use in the biodegradable field such as packaging materials, agricultural films and garbage bags.

Isocyanate-functionalized starch as biorenewable backbone for the preparation and application of poly(ethylene imine) grafted starch

Fu Lixia,Peng Yanqing

Abstract Reactive supports provide versatile platforms for surface decoration, affording various functional materials widely used in chemical and biological research. Considering the biodegradability, biocompatibility, and economy, starch is a suitable support media with high functionality for further chemical modifications. In this proof-of-concept study, isocyanate-functionalized starch was prepared using symmetric diisocyanates as bridging block. Its potential as a reactive platform support was evaluated from the aspects of reactivity and storage stability. Polyamine could be grafted onto this reactive support via urea linkage. The applicability of PEI grafted starch as organic base catalyst was then tested in Knoevenagel condensation as a model reaction. Moreover, the feasibility of PEI grafted starch as a scavenger was also demonstrated in the capture of acid fluorescent dye and excess electrophilic reagent. Graphical abstract

Schiff base modified starch: A promising biosupport for palladium in Suzuki cross-coupling reactions

Xinjuan Li,Zhangquan Zhou,Yanan Wang,Jiaxin Dong,Xianbin Jia,Zhiguo Hu,Qingcong Wei,Weiwei Zhang,Yuqin Jiang,Jiaojiao Zhang,Yahao Dong

Starch can be used in diverse fields because it is a readily available, non-toxic polysaccharide with adaptable functionality and biodegradability . In this study, taking the aforementioned characteristics into consideration, we designed a modified starch (Starch-SB), which serves as supporting material for palladium stabilization. This new air and moisture-stable robust palladium composite [Starch-SB-Pd(II)] was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, TGA , XPS , SEM, EDX , TEM , CP/MAS 13 C NMR, and ICP-MS analytical techniques. The catalytic studies exhibit high activity (up to 99 %) and stability in Suzuki cross-coupling reactions for this starch supported catalytic system under mild conditions (lower reaction temperature and green solvents) because of the cooperative interactions of multifunctional capturing sites on starch (Schiff base, hydroxy and amine groups) with palladium species. The experiments on reusability demonstrate that Starch-SB-Pd(II), which was prepared from functionalized starch, could be readily recycled several cycles through centrifugation . Moreover, we proposed a possibly multifunctional complex structure. This work presents an appealing and intriguing pathway for the utilization of polysaccharide as crucial support in green chemical transformations.

Microencapsulation of algae oil by complex coacervation of chitosan and modified starch: Characterization and oxidative stability

Hongyan Mu,Zhaoxia Song,Xin Wang,Deda Wang,Xiaoqing Zheng,Xiaodan Li

The formation of complex coacervation using chitosan and octenyl succinic anhydride modified starch (OSA starch) and microencapsulation of algae oil were investigated in this study. The zeta-potential, turbidity and coacervate yield were evaluated as a function of pH and the chitosan- OSA starch mass ratio. The highest coacervate yield was achieved at pH 6.0 with a chitosan to OSA starch ratio of 1:3 ( w/w ). Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) indicated favorable affinity (Ka = 1.51 × 10 5  M −1 ) between chitosan and OSA starch. The microcapsules yielded an encapsulation efficiency (EE) in the range of 42.8 ± 0.8%- 93.1 ± 1.2%, the loading capacity ranged between 30.4 ± 2.7% and 58.3 ± 1.3%. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) spectra and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) further confirmed the microencapsulation. In comparison with the bulk oil, the microencapsulated algae oil exhibited improved oxidative stability during storage.
