Physical vapor deposition (PVD): a method to fabricate modified g-C3N4 sheets

Xiaohui Sun,Xianghui An,Sa Zhang,Zhongtao Li,Jing Zhang,Wenting Wu,Mingbo Wu

Modified g-C3N4 sheets (CNS) with a bandgap of 2.61 eV were fabricated through physical vapor deposition (PVD) of g-C3N4. During the PVD process, a series of gaseous derivatives derived from pristine g-C3N4 at 700 °C condense into CNS at low temperature (<400 °C). As a result, CNS still retains a typical semiconductor structure (bandgap of 2.61 eV), while at the same time, CN and O–H defect groups were introduced to its tri-s-triazine-based structure.

The synergistic photocatalytic effects of surface-modified g-C3N4 in simple and complex pollution systems based on a macro-thermodynamic model

Kexin Li,Dongxiao Zhao,Yawen Li,Shenglian Luo,Zhentao Zhou

In this article, three types of surface-modified g-C3N4 (H+/g-C3N4, BCQDs/g-C3N4, and H+/BCQDs/g-C3N4) with unique photocatalytic properties have been successfully fabricated by simple and low-cost strategies. The morphology, elemental composition, textural properties, structural information, and photoelectric properties of the as-prepared materials are systematically characterized. Subsequently, the as-prepared materials are applied to Cr(VI) reduction, 4-FP degradation, and simultaneous Cr(VI) reduction with 4-FP degradation photocatalytic systems under normal and anoxic conditions. Based on the photocatalytic test results, we successfully constructed a macro-thermodynamic model to reveal the essential laws of synergistic photocatalytic effects. The constructed macro-thermodynamic model is suitable for complex photocatalytic systems and is of great significance for the application of photocatalytic technology in real wastewater treatment with multiple pollutants.

Synthesis and photocatalytic performance investigation of an NH4Cl-assisted two-step calcination method for modified g-C3N4

Xinyue Zhang,Lin Yuan,Yu Zhang,Xinyu Shu,Renjie Li,Qunfen Deng,Zilong Zhang,Rui Yang

In this work, a modified graphite phase carbon nitride (g-C3N4), used as an efficient photocatalyst, was successfully prepared by employing melamine as a precursor and ammonium chloride as a gas template agent, in conjunction with a two-step calcination strategy to manipulate the polymerization process of melamine. The relevant characterization results indicated that the modified catalyst had loose structure and more active sites, which increased the specific surface area, inhibited the recombination of light-generated electron–hole pairs, and then promoted the generation of active substances. The photocatalytic performance of the catalyst was evaluated using rhodamine B (RhB) as a template under visible light irradiation. The results demonstrated that the secondary calcination temperature significantly influenced the performance of the catalyst. At the optimum secondary calcination temperature (∼650 °C, denoted as 650-CN-2), the reaction rate constant was estimated to be 0.1163 min−1, which was 30.4 and 2.71 times higher than that of pure CN and CN-2, respectively, while achieving a degradation rate of 97% within 30 min. Radical trapping experiments and ESR analysis confirmed that the superoxide free radical (·O2−) serves as the primary active species in photocatalytic degradation. This work not only expanded research ideas for the optimal temperature of the secondary calcination method, but also provided a useful exploration for the efficient synthesis path of catalysts.

Ultrafast Hole Transfer in Graphitic Carbon Nitride Imide Enabling Efficient H2O2 Photoproduction

Qiushi Hu,Yuling Huang,Xuemeng Yu,Shaokuan Gong,Yifan Wen,Yong Liu,Geng Li,Qiang Zhang,Ruquan Ye,Xihan Chen

Solar-driven photocatalysis is a promising approach for renewable energy application. H2O2 photocatalysis by metal-free graphitic carbon nitride has been gaining attention. Compared with traditional thermal catalysis, metal-free graphitic carbon nitride photocatalysis could lower material cost and achieve greener production of H2O2. Also, to better guide photocatalyst design, a fundamental understanding of the reaction mechanism is needed. Here, we develop a series of model cost-effective metal-free H2O2 photocatalysts made from graphitic carbon nitride (melem) and common imide groups. With 4,4′-oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA)-modified g-C3N4, a H2O2 yield rate of 10781 μmol/h·g·L could be achieved. Transient absorption and ex situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) measurements revealed an ultrafast charge transfer from the melem core to water with ∼3 ps to form unique N–OH intermediates. The electron withdrawing ability of the anhydride group plays a role in governing the rate of electron transfer, ensuring efficient charge separation. Our strategy represents a new way to achieve a low material cost, simple synthesizing strategy, good environment impact, and high H2O2 production for renewable energy application.
