Soil contamination by heavy metals and metalloids has been a major environmental challenge. While various remediation technologies have been reported, field data on the remediation effectiveness have been limited. We tested a new remediation technology for on-site immobilization of As(III) and Pb(II) in a contaminated soil at an abandoned chemical plant site. A novel ternary amending agent consisting of Fe 2 O 3 , MnO 2 , and Mg(OH) 2 (molar ratio = 1.0:5.5:5.5) was used to amend the soil on-site . Field monitoring data indicated that the amendment severed as a pH buffer and a long-term sequester for both As and Pb in the soil. At a dosage of 3 wt%, the acid-leachable As and Pb were lowered from 0.042–0.077 mg/L and 0.013–0.022 mg/L to 0.0062–0.0093 mg/L and 0.0030–0.0080 mg/L, respectively, after one day of the amendment, and to 0.0020–0.0050 mg/L and 0.0020–0.0054 mg/L after 240 days of aging. As(III) was oxidized to As(V) and subsequently immobilized via complexation and precipitation, whereas Pb(II) was sequestered via electrostatic attraction and chemical precipitation . The treatment cost was estimated at $31.5/m 3 . The results indicate that complex contaminants in soil can be effectively immobilized using combined amending agents that can interact with the target chemicals and induce synergistic immobilization reactions.

Enhanced phytoextraction of metals using amendments and hyperaccumulator plants is a promising alternative to expensive traditional remediation techniques. The present study comprehensively investigated the effects of six amendments on both mobility and phytoextraction of Cd and the feasibility of integrating amendment with Ramie as a hyperaccumulator plant on Cd-contaminated soil remediation. The leaching of Cd from contaminated soil was significantly enhanced by two chelating agents (i.e., ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and ethyleneglycoltetraacetic acid (EGTA)), followed by two natural organic acids (i.e., citric acid and tartaric acid), and lastly, two rhizobacteria (i.e., Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas fluorescens ). Further, the application of EDTA and EGTA had inhibitory effects on the growth of Ramie. The application of two organic acids and two rhizobacteria increased the dry biomass yields of roots, stems, and leaves. In terms of the dry biomass of Ramie, 32.7, 23.4, 50.6, and 53.1% of increases were obtained from the applications of citric acid, tartaric acid, B. subtilis , and P. fluorescens , respectively, as compared with that without any amendment applied. Meanwhile, the applications of all amendments were observed to increase Cd concentrations in aerial parts of the plants, and they were ranked in descending order of Cd accumulation: EDTA > EGTA > tartaric acid > citric acid > B. subtilis ≈ P. fluorescens . Taking Cd removal efficiency, potential environmental risk, and economic factor into consideration, EDTA and citric acid-enhanced phytoremediation using Ramie were feasible and promising approaches for remediating Cd-contaminated soil in real practice.

As arable land has become an important sink for cadmium (Cd), soil is being recognized as a major source of metals to the food chain. It becomes, therefore, essential to investigate metal mobility in contaminated soils and to identify suitable remediation strategies. For this, immobilization of Cd was evaluated in contaminated stagnic anthrosol: S1, gleysol : S2 and fluvisol: S3 under flow through conditions. Ten treatments including control were tested alone or in composite form firstly at natural Cd contents (0.58–0.69 mg kg −1 ). Here, T2 (lime), T5 (biochar) and T10 (composite amendment) were found better in reducing the Cd concentration in the soils’ leachates, so, their efficacy was further investigated in the same soils of higher Cd contents (1 and 2 mg kg −1 imposed by soil spiking). Amendments significantly reduced the leachate metal contents especially in 1 mg kg −1 spiked soils. Characterization of T2, T5 and T10 revealed their structural transformations in all the studied soil types, while active functional groups e.g. C–O, C O, O–H, Si–O–Si, ester and alcoholic groups were notably involved in Cd precipitation or adsorption on amendments surface. Variations in Cd speciation in these soils exhibited the exchange of Cd to more stable fractions with tested amendments. These continuous-flow experiments confirmed the strong efficiency of T2, T5 and T10 in reducing the Cd concentration in the leachate of three soils. This study has strong implications in understanding the role of different amendments in controlling the fate, leaching behavior and immobilization of Cd in diverse soil types.

The continuously growing of municipal solid waste (MSW) has posed a threat to human-being. Pyrolysis is a promising technique for MSW disposal, as it can reduce its volume and produce valuable products as well. This study evaluated the potential of carbon residue (CR) derived from waste carton as soil amendment. Additionally, considering the waste plastics, such as plastic bags, plastic tape, etc., can mix with carton in MSW, the effect of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) addition on the characteristics of CR and its environmental behavior was measured. Results showed that the CR derived from carton exhibited notable efficacy in adsorbing Cd 2+ (56.111 mg/g), pesticides and PO 4 3− (0.231 mmol/g), thereby mitigating pollutants and immobilizing nutrient in soil environment. The introduction of PVC was found to enhance the adsorption of CR for Cd 2+ (65.623 mg/g) and PO 4 3− (0.524 mmol/g), albeit exhibiting diminished performance in the removal of pesticides. Different from previous studies, this study revealed that the dissolved black carbon (DBC) released from CRs did not generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) effectively under solar irradiation, and the light screening of DBC can mitigate the photodegradation of pollutants. Furthermore, both CRs increased bacterial luminescence by approximately 70%, which indicated that no toxicity produced during the pyrolysis process. And gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) revealed the absence of polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) in CRs. In summary, this study may provide some new insights on the disposal of MSW, and the CR made by MSW could be effective in soil amendment and reduce the leaching of pollutants and nutrient.

Large-scale comprehensive utilization of coal fly ash (CFA) has become an inevitable issue. In this study, one-step mixed alkali (KOH + CaO) hydrothermal extraction of alumina and synergistic preparation of soil amendment from CFA was developed. The Al 2 O 3 and SiO 2 in CFA were dissolved rapidly under the action of KOH, and the dissolved silicate was transformed into tobermorite under the action of CaO. This approach realized efficient separation of aluminum and silicon with simultaneous regeneration of KOH. The optimum leaching ratio of Al 2 O 3 was 56.44 %, while the leaching ratio of SiO 2 was 3.38 %. The dealuminated CFA (DACFA) was simultaneously transformed into porous aggregates intertwined with tobermorite fibers, which are rich in Si, Ca and K 2 O nutrients due to the excellent cation exchange of tobermorite or formation of tobermorite and leucite minerals. The effective Si, Ca, and K 2 O in F90 were 16.19 %, 20.45 % and 5.31 %, respectively, which met the primary standard of fertilizer. The pot experiment showed that DACFA effectively improved soil quality and immobilized soil heavy metals, thereby accelerating the growth of pakchoi. Through this technology, the high-value transformation from CFA to alumina and soil amendments is expected to facilitate large-scale utilization of CFA and enhance agricultural productivity.

In this work, a type of natural microspheric soil conditioner, PZ(Fe)/GL-SA-Urea, was prepared by emulsion cross-linking and sharp-hole coagulation bath methods. Gelatin (GL) and sodium alginate (SA) were selected as the outermost shell, and the prepared FeOOH was loaded on pickling zeolite (PZ) to improve the loading ratio of urea. The embedding performance and sustained release behavior of the microspheres showed that when the concentration of urea was 1.5%, the embedding rate reached 37.63%, and the cumulative release rate reached 68% within 100 h, indicating that the microsphere had good encapsulation and sustained release abilities. In addition, the water retention and swelling behaviors of the microspheres can be obtained by controlling the content of added GL. Furthermore, antibacterial and planting experiments revealed that the microspheres had excellent antibacterial effects and can effectively improve soil quality and promote crop growth. Therefore, the PZ(Fe)/GL-SA-Urea microsphere soil conditioners possess good application properties and provide fresh solutions to improve soil quality and raise crop yields.

The problem of blue algae accumulation can be alleviated by utilizing blue algae as biomass for resource utilization, which can remove excess phosphates from water to alleviate eutrophication. Herein, Magnesium (Mg) and/or lanthanum (La) were used to modify biochar via high-temperature slow pyrolysis with blue algae as the raw biomass. These modified biochars exhibited abundant carbon (18.0 %-50.3 %), oxygen content (17.4 %-49.1 %), along with a high specific surface area (82.26–233.80 m 2 /g). The surface of metal-modified biochar was enriched with hydroxyl and carboxyl groups and metal elements were efficiently incorporated into biochars. Adsorption kinetic and isotherm experiments were conducted under the optimal pyrolysis temperature of 600 °C, pH of 6.0, and adsorbent dosage of 2.0 g/L. The adsorption kinetics studies by metal-modified biochars for phosphate fitted well pseudo-second-order model Redlich-Peterson isotherm model. Biochar modified by Mg and La exhibited the highest removal efficiency (97.8 %) for phosphate at adsorption equilibrium. The adsorption mechanism involved the electrostatic interaction between hydroxylated metal oxides and negatively charged phosphate ions and the precipitation of phosphate ions through chemical reactions with metal oxides in the solution. After phosphate adsorption, the pristine and metal-modified biochars derived from blue algae were applied as the soil amendment. Biochar adsorbed phosphate apparently improved the germination rate of seeds facilitated the height, width, weight, and chlorophyll content of vegetable seedlings, and induced oxidative stress, which proved that the biochar recovered after adsorption was a high-quality soil amendment. This study provides a new approach for the treatment of phosphate wastewater and the algae application.

Cadmium (Cd) is the most concerning soil pollutant , and a threat to human health, especially in China. The in-situ immobilization of Cadmium by amendments is one of the most widely adopted methods to remedy soil contamination. The study was designed to evaluate the effect of organo-chemical amendments on soil Cd bioavailability and nitrogen cycling microbes under continuous planting of rice ( Oryza sativa ) and pak choi ( Brassica chinensis L. ). The experiment was carried out using four amendments, Lime, Zeolite, Superphosphate , and Biochar, at two different ratios; M1: at the ratio of 47:47:5:1, and M2 at the ratio of 71:23:5:1, respectively. Moreover, both M1 and M2 were enriched at four levels (T1: 0.5%; T2: 1%; T3: 2%; T4: 4%). Results showed that compared with CK (Cd enriched soils), the yield of rice under treatments of M1T1 and M2T1 increased by 8.93% and 8.36%, respectively. While the biomass (fresh weight) of pak choi under M1 and M2 amendments increased by 2.52–2.98 times and 0.76–2.89 times respectively, under enrichment treatments T1, T2, and T3. The total Cd concentrations in rice grains treated with M1T3 and M2T3 decreased by 89.25% and 93.16%, respectively, compared with CK. On the other hand, the total Cd concentrations in pak choi under M1T3 and M2T2 decreased by 92.86% and 90.23%, respectively. The results showed that soil pH was the main factor affecting Cd bioavailability in rice and pak choi. The Variance partitioning analysis (VPA) of rice and pak choi showed that soil pH was the most significant contributing factor. In the rice season, the contribution of soil pH (P) on Cd bioavailability was 10.14% (P = 0.102), and in the pak choi season, the contribution of soil pH was 8.38% (P = 0.133). Furthermore, the abundance of ammonia oxidation and denitrifying microorganisms had significantly correlation with soil pH and exchange Cd. In rice season, when the enrichment level of amendments increased from 0.5% (T1) to 2% (T3), the gene abundance of AOA, AOB, nirK , nirS and nosZ (І) tended to decrease. While in pak choi season, when the enrichment level increased at the level of 0.5% (T1), 1% (T2), and 2% (T3), the gene abundance of AOB, nirS, and nosZ (І) increased. Additionally, the gene abundance of AOA and nirK showed a reduction in the pak choi season contrasting to rice. And the mixed amendment M2 performed better at reducing Cd uptake than M1, which may have correlation with the ratio of lime and zeolite in them. Finally, we conclude that between these two amendments, when applied at a moderate level M2 type performed better than M1 in reducing Cd uptake, and also showed positive effects on both gene abundance and increase soil pH.

A multifunctional microspheric soil conditioner based on chitosan-grafted poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid)/biochar [CS-g-P(AM-co-AA)/BC] was prepared. First, the P(AM-co-AA) was synthesized and successfully grafted onto CS, and the three-dimensional network structure of microspheres was formed with N,N-methylenebis(acrylamide) as the cross-linking agent according to the inverse suspension polymerization method. Meanwhile, BC and urea were encapsulated into the body of microspheres during the polymerization. The structure of the microspheres was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, polarized optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, and the mechanism of adsorption of Cu2+ on the microspheres was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Furthermore, the experimental results demonstrated the excellent water absorption and retention capabilities of microspheres, and the release rate of urea was dramatically reduced. Importantly, the introduction of BC significantly enhanced the adsorption performance of the microspheres with respect to heavy metal ions. Consequently, the multifunctional soil conditioner held promise for use in soil improvement and agricultural production.

Cadmium (Cd) pollution is a widespread environmental problem that decreases crop production, destroys the microbial ecology of soil, and poses a severe risk to human health. Organo-chemical amendment is a cost-effective, eco-friendly, and community-acceptable widely applied an in situ technique for metal-contaminated farmland. In this study, we mixed lime, zeolite, calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer, and biochar in a mixture ratio of 71:23:5:1 to form a mixed amendment. Field and laboratory experiments were conducted to study the effects of the mixed amendment on soil exchangeable Cd content, plant Cd accumulation, and soil microbial community . It was found that the application of 0.5% mixed amendment decreased exchangeable soil Cd by more than 85% and 64% in wheat and rice season, respectively, compared with control (CK), without increasing pH. Moreover, the application of 0.5% mixed amendment decreased Cd accumulation in grains by 22.9% and 41.2% in wheat and rice season, respectively, compared to CK. The result of phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) shows that the level of soil microbial diversity and species richness under mixed amendment treatments were higher than in lime treatment, indicating more copiotrophic conditions and faster rate of nutrient turnover in mixed amendment than pure lime treatment. Hence, it concluded that the mixed amendment has a strong effect on fixing exchangeable soil Cd and reducing the accumulation of Cd in crops. Finally, it was observed that the mixed amendment improved the soil microbial community structure and accelerate the rate of nutrient turnover by microbes under this favorable condition comparative to individual treatments.

Simple SummarySediment improvers are important mediators of aquatic animals’ growth performance and the surrounding environmental quality. However, the physiological responses of crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) to different sediment improvers remain unclear. Here, we cultivated crayfish using two chemical (potassium monopersulfate and potassium ferrate) and two biological (purple nonsulfur photosynthetic bacteria andBacillus subtilis) sediment improvers at low and high concentrations. After 42 days, we found that the addition of chemical sediment improvers were more effective in improving water quality than biological sediment improvers. By contrast, the application of biological sediment improvers resulted in considerably enhanced final weight, weight gains, and survival rates. In all low-concentration groups, the activity of immune-related enzymes in the hemolymph and hepatopancreas considerably increased, whereas the malondialdehyde activity and mRNA expression of AMP genes (PcALF and PcCru) considerably decreased. Crayfish exposed to low concentrations of sediment improvers exhibited enhanced intestinal and hepatopancreatic integrity. Additionally, the composition of the gut microbiota varied after the addition of different sediment improvers. In summary, our research indicated that different types of sediment improvers not only improved the farming environment but also had varying effects on crayfish. Therefore, an appropriate sediment improver based on specific aquaculture conditions is needed.Sediment improvers are important mediators of aquatic animals’ growth performance and the surrounding environmental quality. Silicon (Si) deficiency and heavy metals (HMs) pollution are common for farmland soil because of long-term intensive farming. In this study, a novel citrate-modified biochar (C-BC) was introduced as a soil conditioner to simultaneously increase the amount of plant-available Si (PASi) and immobilize HMs. The maximum amount of PASi released was 33.00 mg⋅g −1 from C-BC pre-treated with 0.1 mol⋅L −1 citrate (C-BC0.1). A formation–transport coupling mechanism for increasing the amount of PASi released was developed. Stable Si in the biomass was pyrolyzed to give silicate that was relatively mobile via nucleophilic attack of citrate and hydrolysis of amorphous Si. Silicate species were then released through the porous surface and widening cracks caused by pyrolysis . At citrate concentrations >0.1 mol⋅L −1 , the surface and cracks were easily blocked by precipitates formed during pyrolysis. The ability of C-BC to remove HMs was assessed using Cu as an example. C-BC0.1 was optimal for adsorbing Cu, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 271.73 mg⋅g −1 . The Cu adsorption mechanism mainly involved surface precipitation, surface complexation, electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding. Our research provides important implications for simultaneously addressing Si deficiency and HMs contaminant problems by these materials for soil amendment in agro-ecosystem.
