The present study aims to investigate the mechanism by which triclosan influences the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during the whole anaerobic digestion process. qPCR and metagenomic analyses revealed that triclosan facilitated ARGs dissemination in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Furthermore, integrons exhibited a significant correlation with the majority of quantified ARGs, and various ARGs were frequently linked on integron gene cassettes. Microbial community and redundancy analyses indicated that triclosan altered the components of dominant ARGs hosts Firmicutes, Synergistetes and Bacteroidetes. Path modeling analysis confirmed integrons were the main driving force for facilitating ARGs dissemination. The promoted ARGs dissemination may be associated with the increased reactive oxygen species generation, cell membrane permeability, close-connected the ARGs transfer related regulatory proteins induced by triclosan. This study broadens the understanding of triclosan facilitates ARGs dissemination through anaerobic treatment, the strategies for preventing potential risks should be proposed in practice.

The aim of this study was to examine the presence of genes responsible for resistance to quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) and the association of qac genes with class 1 integrons in Proteus mirabilis isolated from cooked meat products. A total of 52 P. mirabilis isolates (29.2%) were detected from 178 samples, and their minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of benzalkonium chloride (BC) ranged from 4 to >32 μg/mL. The isolates with BC MICs of 24 μg/mL were observed most frequently. PCR assays indicated that mdfA, ydgE/ydgF, qacE, qacEΔ1, emrE, sugE(c), and sugE(p) were commonly present (32.7%–100%) in these isolates, but qacH was less prevalent (3.8%). Five groups of resistance gene cassettes were identified in 10 intI1-positive isolates. An unusual gene cassette array dfrA32-ereA-aadA2 was found in one foodborne isolate of P. mirabilis. Two isolates harbored qacH- and sul3- associated non-classic integrons: aadA2-cmlA1-aadA1-qacH-IS440-sul3 and a new arrangement dfrA32-ereA1-aadA2-cmlA1-aadA1-qacH-IS440-sul3, which is first reported in P. mirabilis. Non-classic class 1 integrons were located on conjugative plasmids of 100 kb in two tested isolates. Our data showed that the QAC resistance genes were commonly present among P. mirabilis isolates from cooked meats and qacH was associated with non-classic class 1 integrons. The creation of transconjugants demonstrated that qacH-associated non-classic class 1 integrons were located on conjugative plasmids and therefore could facilitate the co-dissemination of disinfectant and antimicrobial resistance genes among bacteria, an increasing area of concern.

The aim of this study was to examine the presence of genes responsible for resistance to quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) and the association of qac genes with class 1 integrons in Escherichia coli isolated from retail meats. Among the 179 E. coli isolates tested, the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of benzalkonium chloride (BC) ranged from 4 to 64 μg/mL. PCR assays indicated that QAC-resistance genes sugE(c) , ydgE / ydgF , mdfA , emrE and qacE Δ1 were commonly present (40.2%–88.3%) in these isolates, but qacE , qacF , qacH and sugE(p) were less prevalent (2.2%–28.5%). Seven different gene cassette arrangements were identified in 31 intI1 -positive isolates. Three types of qacH-sul3 -associated non-classic integrons were observed in four isolates: dfrA12 - orfF - aadA2-cmlA1-aadA1-qacH- IS 440-sul3 , aadA2-cmlA1-aadA1-qacH- IS 440-sul3 and dfrA1-aadA1-qacH- IS 440-sul3 . Non-classic class 1 integrons were located on plasmids of 100–150 kb in these four isolates. Our results demonstrated that the qacH -associated integrons located on 100 kb plasmids in two isolates could be transferred to an E. coli recipient, indicating the co-existence and co-dissemination of disinfectant and antimicrobial resistance genes among bacterial species.

Livestock manure has been identified as a significant hotspot for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, the impact of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) on the fate of ARGs during livestock manure composting remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the evolution of ARGs in chicken manure compost exposed to 100 and 600 mg kg −1 nZVI. The results showed that nZVI addition reduced the concentration of some antibiotics such as doxycycline and sulfamethoxazole. Furthermore, nZVI addition decreased the abundances of most ARGs at the end of composting, but nZVI dosage did not have any significant effect. The abundances of the dominant ARGs ( sul1 and sul2 ) were significantly correlated to the class 1 integron-integrase gene ( intI1 ). A network analysis revealed that the genera Bacteroides , Bacillus , Corynebacterium , Thiopseudomonas and Pseudomonas were the main potential hosts for multiple ARGs, and the decreased abundance of these bacteria contributed to the removal of ARGs. Structural equation models demonstrated that the reduction in intI1 played a predominant role in ARG removal. The nZVI also had direct effects on the intI1 abundance. These findings suggest that the addition of nZVI is a promising strategy to minimize ARG release in chicken manure compost.

The investigation focused on the removal of antibiotic resistance genes from wastewater using ferrate treatment at various sulfite concentrations. As the sulfite concentration increased from 0 to 28.5 mg/L, the total DNA removal rate treated by 10 mg/L ferrate increased from 71.45% to 96.48%. The antibiotic resistance genes , save our souls genes and class I integron abundance reduction treated by ferrate ranged from 0.02 log to 1.66 log copies/ml at different sulfite concentrations, and the antibiotic resistance gene parC removal was enhanced as the sulfite addition. When the sulfite concentration reached to 28.5 mg/L, the catalase and superoxide dismutase levels were decreased by 21.57% and 10.04%, respectively, while the reactive oxygen species and lactate dehydrogenase levels were increased by 75.34% and 28.67%, respectively, compared to those in the wastewater treated by alone ferrate without sulfite. In the coupled ferrate (10 mg/L) and sulfite (28.5 mg/L) system, sulfate radicals and hydroxyl radicals were the main contributors to the DNA removals, and their contribution rates were 51.99% and 28.95%, respectively. The antibiotic resistance genes and save our souls genes hosts changes showed microbial community significantly affected the DNA removal. This study offers novel comprehensions on the antibiotic resistance genes removal from the wastewater by the combined ferrate and sulfite.
