Infectious burn wounds are characterized by substantial exudate and inflammation. Ordinary wound dressings struggle to absorb substantial exudate. In this study, a color-changeable and separable polylactic acid/polyvinylpyrrolidone/chitosan tri-layer self-pumping dressing containing astragalus polysaccharide was developed. The dressing had an outer layer of polyacrylonitrile/polyvinylpyrrolidone/CoCl 2 nanofiber, a middle layer of polylactic acid/polyvinylpyrrolidone/chitosan nanofiber, and an inner astragalus polysaccharide drug-carrying layer. It could unidirectionally absorb wound exudate and change color after absorbing exudate. In addition, after absorbing the exudate, the outer layer of the dressing could be separated, the remaining double layers consisted of a drug layer and antimicrobial chitosan promoted wound healing and reduced infection. The water absorption rate of the tri-layer nanofibers reached 2770.70 ± 122 % per time, and the water vapor transmission rate was 4585.99 ± 65 g∙m −2 ∙day −1 . The nanofiber dressing promoted the proliferation, migration, and adhesion of L929 cells. After treating burn-infected rats with this dressing for 14 days, the rats' collagen content and anti-inflammatory levels increased. In conclusion, the color-changeable and separable polylactic acid/polyvinylpyrrolidone/chitosan tri-layer self-pumping dressing containing astragalus developed in this study can effectively accelerate wound healing.

Strong blood adhesion to dressing may cause secondary damage to the wounds during the wound dressing replacement process. Thus, blood repellent dressings have significant potential applications in wound treatment. Herein, a hydrophobic, degradable, and antibacterial dressing is reported to reduce the blood adhesion and prevent infection around the wounds. The dressing is prepared by cross-linked non-woven zein nanofibers with quaternized titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles coating. The dual hydrophobic structures supported by zein nanofibers and the quaternized TiO 2 nanoparticles coating provide outstanding water/blood repellency for the dressing, and efficiently prevent blood leakage. Meanwhile, the dressing also possesses appropriate moisture permeability (2194 ± 143 mL m −2 per day). In addition, the quaternized TiO 2 nanoparticles coating provides excellent bactericidal activity against Gram-negative Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus , especially under visible Xe lamp illumination. Evaluations of hemolysis and cytocompatibility confirm that the fabricated mat is biocompatible and non-toxic to the cells. Considering the excellent degradable features, the dressing may become a promising environmentally friendly biomedical material.

A wound evolves with variable pHs depending on the healing stage, and the maintenance of mild acidic condition can help healing by deterring the formation of a biofilm. Herein, a dual-layer wound dressing with an acid-responsive zeolitic imidazolate framework–8 (ZIF-8) layer and an acid-modulating layer is designed to control the acid-dependent release of therapeutic agents for the improved healing process. The outer dressing layer is coated with curcumin-incorporated ZIF-8, where curcumin and zinc ions are released upon dissociation of ZIF-8 in an acidic condition. The inner layer, a pH modulator, is fabricated by electrospinning polyvinylpyrrolidone with addition of acetic acid. In vitro release test shows that the outer layer dressing attains a considerably higher release of curcumin and Zn 2+ under an acidic condition. Combined with the inner acidic layer, the dual layer dressing exhibits facilitated release of effective agents regardless of environmental pHs, attributed to the proper pH modulation to about 6.5. The anti-oxidant activity of curcumin and antibacterial activity of Zn 2+ are confirmed. The study highlights the novel proof-of-concept design of active wound dressing demonstrating the dual functions of pH regulation and the stimulus-responsive drug delivery.

Exudate management is of significant clinical value for the treatment of acute wound. Various wound dressings have been developed to restore the function of injured tissues and promote wound healing, but proper exploiting the healing factors inside exudate and achieving anti-adhesion wound care remains a challenge. Herein, we present a novel multi-functional composite dressing (MCD) by coupling supernatant lyophilized powder of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC-SLP) with a sandwich-structured wound dressing (SWD). The developed MCDs demonstrated unique unidirectional drainage capability, stable anti-adhesion characteristics, and improved wound healing performance. The designed SWD with both superhydrophobic inner surface and liquid-absorption ability of mid layer enables the dressings exhibit desired anti-adhesion property to neoformative granulation tissues, favorable shielding effect to exogenous bacteria, as well as appropriate exudate-retaining capability and unidirectional exudate-absorption property. The introduction of MSC-SLP in SWD was demonstrated to further improve wound healing quality. Compared to medical gauze, the synergic effect of SWD and MSC-SLP significantly accelerates wound healing rate by over 30%, avoids tissue avulsion when changing dressings, and produces a flat-smooth closure surface. More importantly, the wound treated with MCDs presents more skin accessory organs and blood vessels in regenerated tissues than other groups. In vivo/vitro biocompatibility evaluations indicated little toxicity, demonstrating the biosecurity of the developed dressings. The proposed method offers great potential in clinical applications particularly for chronic wound treatments.

Although there have been many studies on using hydrogels as substitutes for natural extracellular matrices (ECMs), hydrogels that mimic the structure and properties of ECM remain a contentious topic in current research. Herein, a hierarchical biomimetic fiber hydrogel was prepared using a simple strategy, with a structure highly similar to that of the ECM. Cell viability experiments showed that the hydrogel not only has good biocompatibility but also promotes cell proliferation and growth. It was also observed that cells adhere to the fibers in the hydrogel, mimicking the state of cells in the ECM. Lastly, through a rat skin wound repair experiment, we demonstrated that this hydrogel has a good effect on promoting rat skin healing. Its high structural similarity to the ECM and good biocompatibility make this hydrogel a good candidate for prospective applications in the field of tissue engineering. Keywords:hydrogel;hierarchy;fiber;self‑healing;wound dressing

Trimethoxysilylpropyl octadecyldimethyl ammonium chloride (QAS), which forms facile bonds with hydroxyl groups , acts as a cationic antibacterial agent . In this work, QAS was introduced into a polycaprolactone (PCL)/gelatin hybrid in increasing concentrations to fabricate a long-acting and broad-spectrum antimicrobial micro/nanofiber membrane as a novel wound dressing. The physical interactions and chemical bonding between QAS/PCL and QAS/gelatin were demonstrated by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS. Measured water contact angle between the PCL-gelatin/QAS (PG-Q) nanofiber membranes suggested a hydrophobic surface , which has been shown to aid in removal of wound dressings. The mechanical strength of the membranes was sufficient to meet the clinical requirements. Furthermore, the 15% QAS (PG-Q15) and 20% QAS (PG-Q20) formulated nanofiber membranes showed a considerable increase in their bacteriostatic activity towards Staphylococcus aureus (gram-positive) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (gram-negative) bacteria, suggesting a broad-spectrum bactericidal effect by the PG-Q membranes. The PG-Q membranes with various QAS formulations demonstrated little cytotoxicity. Therefore, the long-acting and broad-spectrum antimicrobial electrospun PG-Q micro/nanofibers membrane demonstrate potential efficacy as an antibacterial wound dressing.

Multifunctional dressing materials are highly required to combat multidrug resistant bacteria in wound infections. Here an alginate-based aerogel dressing is reported that combines photothermal bactericidal activity, hemostatic property, and free radical scavenging for skin wound disinfection and accelerated wound healing. The aerogel dressing is facilely constructed by immersing a clean nail (Fe) in a mixed solution of sodium alginate (Alg) and tannic acid (TA), followed by freezing, solvent replacement, and air drying. The Alg matrix plays an essential role in modulating the continuous assembly process between TA and Fe to allow the homogenous distribution of TA-Fe metal-phenolic networks (MPN) in the resulting composite, without forming aggregates. The photothermally responsive Nail-TA/Alg aerogel dressing is successfully applied in a murine skin wound model infected with Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). This work provides a facile strategy to integrate MPN with the hydrogel/aerogel matrix through in situ chemistry, which is promising for developing multifunctional biomaterials and biomedicine.

The design of multifunctional hydrogel dressings to effectively promote wound healing is highly desirable in clinical trauma and surgery. Inspired by excellent mechanical properties of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and strong adhesion of polyphenols, gallic acid was grafted onto chitosan molecular chain (CS-GA) by free radical polymerization in this study, and PVA/CS-GA hydrogels were successfully prepared by repeated freeze-thaw method, without introducing toxic crosslinking agents. The prepared PVA/CS-GA hydrogels could adhere to various substrates, which confirmed excellent universal adhesion properties. The red blood cells adhesion ratio was 67.1%, indicating its potential for promoting wound coagulation. Meanwhile, the mechanical strength of PVA/CS-GA hydrogel was significantly enhanced, exhibiting approximately twice tensile strength and failure stretch compared with PVA hydrogel. Furthermore, attributing to GA molecule, PVA/CS-GA hydrogels not only showed favorable antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), but also could scavenge free radicals, showing effective antioxidant activity. The hydrogels also had good biocompatibility, met the basic requirements of biomedical materials and may promote wound repair. It should be noted that the content of GA had significant impact on cytotoxicity. Therefore, multifunctional PVA/CS-GA hydrogels with excellent mechanical, adhesion, antioxidant, antibacterial and biocompatible properties show promising potential applications in the biomedicine field, especially as functional wound dressings.

Microbial infection in open wounds can delay healing and lead to severe complications. This study introduces a bacterial-responsive cellulose-based fabric wound dressing (Fabric-PAC) with integrated antimicrobial and hemostatic functions. Fabric-PAC is chemically modified with polyphosphate (PolyP) and low-dose silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), and further functionalized with a phthalocyanine-based photosensitizer via supramolecular interactions on surface. Upon contact with bacteria, the photosensitizer is displaced, exposing PolyP to initiate blood coagulation and platelet-deriven tissue remodeling, promoting wound healing. Simultaneously, AgNPs are also exposed to provede sustained bacteriostasis. Moreover, the positively charged photosensitizer tightly attaches on the bacterial surface, and triggers the antimicrobial photodynamic effect upon illumination, rapidly eliminating pathogens. This study not only introduces a bacteria-responsive wound dressing with synergistic antimicrobial and hemostatic effects, but also offers a new strategy for the functionalization of cellulose-based materials.

To address persistent challenges in wound care, including exudate management, infection prevention, and healing monitoring, this study developed a multifunctional fiber dressing using electrospinning technology. The system integrates a patterned hydrophobic polylactic acid/zinc oxide (PLA/ZnO) inner layer providing antimicrobial protection and exudate drainage; a polyacrylonitrile/polydopamine (PAN/PDA) intermediate water transport layer enabling unidirectional exudate transfer; and an outer PAN-based functional membrane incorporating sodium polyacrylate (SPA), phenol red (PSP), and tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) for controlled drug release and visual wound status monitoring. The comprehensive evaluation revealed exceptional performance: rapid exudate removal within 3.35 s, 96 h sustained antibacterial drug release (68.6% cumulative release), pH-responsive chromatic transition (yellow-to-red at pH 5–9), and significant antimicrobial efficacy against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus (inhibition zone diameters of 10 and 18 mm, respectively). The dressing exhibited a balance of mechanical strength (6.1 MPa tensile strength) and breathability (13.4 mm/s air permeability rate). By integrating three core functions─efficient exudate management, antimicrobial regulation, and intelligent healing monitoring─this multifunctional architecture demonstrates clinical applicability in postoperative care and chronic wound therapy.

The formulation of an antibiotic-free antibacterial approach is imperative in circumventing escalating bacterial drug resistance. Electrical stimulation presents a viable therapeutic modality for such an approach. Nonetheless, obstacles persist in achieving efficacious sterilization with biosafe low-voltage electrical fields (EFs) and enduring antibacterial capabilities. In this study, we have devised a novel capacitive antibacterial dressing comprising polypyrrole-wrapped carbon cloth (PPy-CC) electrodes and a bacterial cellulose (BC) hydrogel separator. Subjected to 1 V electrical stimulation for 10 min, the dressing attains high bactericidal efficiency (up to 99.97%) and enhanced activity against multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria (up to 99.99%). Its considerable electric capacity and rechargeability allow for repeated charging to achieve sustained sterilization. In vivo results demonstrate significant inhibition of wound infection and facilitated wound recovery in infected full-thickness defects in mouse models. This represents an antibiotic-free, physically-stimulated treatment modality for infected wounds with considerable potential for clinical application. TOC A capacitive antibacterial dressing consists of polypyrrole-wrapped carbon cloth as electrode layer and bacterial cellulose hydrogel as separator with efficiently accelerated infected-wound healing. The resultant hydrogel dressing exhibits excellent high capacitance characteristics, good biocompatibility, efficient and sustained antibacterial ability after low voltage charging. It is an antibiotic-free, physical stimulation-based strategy for infected wounds.
