Effect of Magnesium and Temperature on the Accelerated Carbonation Progress of β-Dicalcium Silicate

Binbin Fu,Chaoran Wang,Dan Wang

This study investigates the impact of different temperatures and initial Mg2+/Ca2+molar ratios in the solution on the wet-accelerated carbonation of β-dicalcium silicate (β-C2S). The x-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) analysis results indicated that temperature and the Mg2+/Ca2+molar ratio are key factors in the nucleation of aragonite. Aragonite formed at a temperature above 60 °C, and the high temperature promoted the crystallinity of needle-like aragonite with a length of 1–6 μm and a diameter of ~1 μm. Moreover, 80 °C was the most favorable temperature for the formation of aragonite with a large aspect ratio in the carbonation system of β-C2S. Mg2+had a significant effect on inhibiting the transformation of aragonite to calcite and promoting the stability of aragonite. Aragonite became the dominant CaCO3polymorph instead of calcite when the Mg2+/Ca2+molar ratio was above 1.0, and pure aragonite-style calcium carbonate was formed at a Mg2+/Ca2+molar ratio of 1.5.

CO2 sequestration by wet carbonated magnesium slag with high-content aragonite whiskers for improving cement performance as underground filling material

Boqiang Wu,Xiaodong Wang,Shibin Zhu,Yuehong Zhang,Junhao Ye,Haibo Zhang,Songhui Liu

Magnesium slag (MS) is an alkaline waste residue from magnesium smelting processes. This study aimed to utilize the magnesium oxide in MS and adopt MgCl 2 as the calcium carbonate crystal modifier to prepare high length-to-diameter ratio aragonite whiskers via wet carbonation , which can achieve high-value recovery of MS while capturing CO 2 and enhancing cement as underground filling material . The effects of MgCl 2 concentration on the carbonation process , composition, microstructure, and morphology were systematically investigated. With increasing MgCl 2 concentration, more aragonite was obtained, reaching 94.9 % at 0.5 M MgCl 2 . Notably, at 0.1 M MgCl 2 , high length-to-diameter ratio aragonite whiskers with 16 were achieved. Introducing 1 wt% MS carbonated at optimal 0.1 M MgCl 2 into cement increased the 3 d and 28 d compressive strengths by 17.8 % and 22 %, respectively. Moreover, an excellent CO 2 sequestration capacity of up to 20.33 g CO 2 per 100 g MS was obtained for the carbonated MS. Therefore, wet carbonated MS with high content aragonite whiskers is a promising method for MS high-value utilization while reducing cement usage and CO 2 emission, as well as improving cement performance as underground filling material.

The effect of nascent calcium carbonate inhibiting the flotation behavior of calcite

Binbin Li,Qing Shi,Dezhi Liu,Saizhen Jin,Qingyun Luo,Zejun Wang

Recent studies on calcite have shown that newly precipitated clusters of amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) and vaterite in pulp change the inherent reactivity of the calcite surface. The flotation recovery and surface zeta potential of calcite undergo rapid changes during the initial reaction time but are slightly altered after 60 min. In order to further understand the adverse effects of newly precipitated CaCO 3 on the flotation of calcite, the relationship between the recrystallization process of nascent calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) and the flotation behavior of calcite was explored under different time conditions in this study. Accordingly, during the recrystallization process, the intensity of the chemical reaction between ACC–vaterite–calcite and hexametaphosphate (SH) was found to gradually weaken through the flotation test, SEM, XRD and FTIR . Furthermore, due to the difference in crystal structure, ACC and vaterite were shown to strengthen the reactivity of SH and Ca 2+ on the surface of calcite in flotation through the zeta potential test and X–ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thereby weakening the ability of oleate (OL − ) in collecting the mineral.

Study on the growth mechanism of porous spherical calcium carbonate synthesized by carbonization controlled by amino acids

Wenjing Yan,Bin Liang,Wanhe Li,Hualin Huang,Deqiang Shi,Zhenming Chen,Zhongmin Li,Meihua Yu,Guangtao Wei,Kai Huang

The formation of vaterite is well known to be influenced by many low molecular weight additives. In this study, Density functional theory calculations was employed to study the effect of biological material lysine(Lys), aspartic acid(Asp), threonine(Thr) and glycine(Gly) on the formation of vaterite CaCO 3 . The interaction energies between Gly and CaCO 3 (110) and (104) surfaces were −2.618 and −1.784 eV, respectively. With the molar ratio of Ca 2+ to Gly at 1.5, the reaction time of 11.5 min, the pH value of 7.5, the crystalline product of the reaction was almost monodisperse spherical vaterite in Ca(OH) 2 -Gly-CO 2 reaction system. The obtained products were characterized by the XRD, RAM, SEM, TEM, and FT-IR. The results showed that the increase of Gly concentration inhibited the nucleation and the growth of calcite. Lys, Asp, Thr and Gly were employed as stabilizers for controlling particles, the crystalline product of the reaction was almost monodisperse vaterite CaCO 3 . Its surface chemistry can be explored using this mechanism analysis. The methods are expected to be a reference for industrial production process.

Bioprocessing-inspired Water-Mediated Crystallization and Densification of Strong Nacre-Like Aragonite Ceramic from Hydrated Amorphous Precursor

Huifeng Hu,Qihang Wang,Huailing Gao,Pengfei Wang,Hang Ping,Jingjing Xie,Zhengyi Fu,Zhaoyong Zou

Ceramics are usually obtained by powder sintering at a temperature higher than 1000 °C. By contrast, living organisms can use hydrated amorphous precursors to produce biominerals with high inorganic content and excellent mechanical properties under mild conditions. Here, inspired by the biomineralization process, aragonite ceramic composed of densely packed nanocrystals is manufactured by in situ crystallization and densification of amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) under pressure at low temperature (80 °C). It is demonstrated that the structural water played critical roles in promoting the fusion of nanoparticles, nucleation of aragonite nanocrystals, and further densification. More importantly, strong nacre-like aragonite ceramic is constructed by introducing cellulose films as the organic layers, where a gradient interface is achieved by water-promoted fusion of nanocrystals into cellulose. Notably, the hardness and Young's modulus of the artificial nacre from nanoindentation can reach 3.76 and 63.38 GPa, respectively, which are comparable to natural nacre. The macroscopic mechanical analysis gave a Vickers hardness of 258.26 Kgf mm −2 and Young's modulus of 5.94 GPa. Besides, the flexural strength and fracture toughness can reach 158.0 MPa and 3.35 MPa m 1/2 , respectively. Thus, the study provides a new bioprocessing-inspired strategy for the fabrication of ceramics with excellent mechanical properties at low temperatures.

Site-specific interactions enhanced dissolution of natural aragonite (110) surfaces in succinic acid (SUC) solutions: Implications for the oceanic aragonite dissolution fluxes

Hongmei Tang,Xiao Wu,Yiping Yang,Haiyang Xian,Jianxi Zhu,Min Fan,Xiping Xi,Jingming Wei,Runxiang Du,Hongmei Liu,Runliang Zhu

Aragonite , one of the most common biological calcium carbonate minerals, is widespread in marine plankton and neritic sediments (e.g., accounting for 89% of pelagic calcification of CaCO 3 in the surface ocean). Its dissolution directly affects the export fluxes of CaCO 3 in seawater. The aragonite dissolution in the ocean correlates with the increase of partial pressure of carbon dioxide and is pertinent to acidic biomolecules. However, aragonite dissolution in seawater with acidic biomolecules has been overlooked, and the interaction mechanism is unclear. In-situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) was employed to observe the dissolution features of aragonite (110) growth surfaces in succinic acid (SUC, HOOC-CH 2 -CH 2 -COOH) solutions. The results demonstrate that (1) both the morphologies and spreading rates of the etch pits formed on aragonite (110) surfaces are altered by the interactions between SUC molecules and the surfaces; (2) the [1 1 ‾ 1‾ 1] and [ 1 ‾ 1‾ 11] steps of the etch pits on aragonite (110) surfaces in SUC solutions are kinetically controlled; (3) dissolution rates of aragonite (110) surfaces are proportional to SUC concentrations, which is attributed to the strong complexation between SUC molecules and surface-bounded Ca atoms ( ≡ C a + ≡Ca+ ); (4) etch pits morphologies of aragonite (110) and calcite (10.4) surfaces are different in SUC solutions, and the spreading rates of the etch pits of the former are one to two orders of magnitude lower than those of the latter. Furthermore, aragonite is found to be more sensitive to SUC molecules than calcite , suggesting that dissolving aragonitic materials could be more easily affected by circumambient biomolecules than dissolving calcitic materials. In seawater that contains organic molecules, the dissolution fluxes of aragonite could be much slower than those of calcite. These findings not only reveal the site-specific interactions between SUC molecules and the ≡ C a + ≡Ca+ on aragonite (110) surfaces but also emphasize its implication for the oceanic aragonite dissolution fluxes.

Effect of nano-silica on microbiologically induced calcium carbonate precipitation

Miao Liu,Lixiong Cai,Hanbin Luo

Microbiologically induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) is a new technique in environmental geotechnical engineering. Ultrafine particles including nanoparticles consisting of clay particles and organic matter present in the nanometer size range are ubiquitous in sand due to the erosion or chemical reactions of earth minerals. In this paper, nano-SiO 2 (NS) was used to represent nanoparticles and investigate the influence of nanoparticles in soil on MICP. Both MICP in a solution environment and MICP on the surface of quartz sand were investigated. Then, a series of macroscopic and microscopic tests were conducted to investigate the effect mechanism of NS on MICP. It was found that the NS could inhibit the MICP reaction process and promote calcite formation in a solution environment. Conversely, NS could inhibit calcite formation on the quartz sand surface. Besides, the main products of these two cases are quite different: the former is vaterite, while the latter is calcite. In general, the nanoscale silica particles are detrimental to MICP.

Effect of bacterial solution to cementation solution ratio on dust suppression effect of microbial dust suppressant and mechanism analysis

Yanyun Zhao,Di Zhang,Xiangming Hu,Yue Feng,Jindi Liu,Xiaoniu Yu,Ningjun Jiang

Dust suppression agent based on Microbially Induced Carbonate Precipitation (MICP) was a new and efficient dust suppression method in recent years, but the environment had a significant impact on its dust suppression effect, and its mechanism of action was complex. This article conducted a dust suppression study by adjusting the volume ratio of bacterial solution and cementation solution in MICP. It was found that the dust suppression efficiency was the highest when the bacterial solution to cementation solution ratio was 2:1, and the wind erosion rate in 15 days was 0.68 %. In the early stage, the nutrients in the bacterial solution bound the coal dust to suppress the dust, but the dominant factor for the continuous performance of the subsequent dust suppression was the deposition and adhesion of CaCO 3 formed by biomineralization. As the reaction progressed, the CaCO 3 crystal form gradually changed from the initial vaterite to calcite. When the proportion of bacterial solution was high, it promoted the convert of crystal form and stabilized the cementation. However, at low bacterial solution proportions, the transformation time of vaterite to calcite was prolonged and the proportion of calcite decreased. The microbial dust suppressant with a high bacterial solution to cementation solution ratio had poor infiltration, causing it to concentrate on the surface of coal dust, resulting in high hardness of the mineralized coal dust consolidation body. At low Bacterial solution to cementation solution ratio, the wettability of the microbial dust suppressant increased, leading to a more uniform consolidation and increased thickness.

Optimization of calcium carbide residue utilization for producing high-quality calcium carbonate

Yuhang Yang,Wenxiu Li,Zhiwei Xun,Zhenwei Yi,Tao Wang,Zitao Yu,Yan Huang,Yongzheng Gu

In light of the current situation where the utilization of calcium carbide slag yields low profits but holds significant potential for reducing carbon emissions, ammonium acetate was employed to leach calcium carbide slag. It also played a crucial role in regulating the products of indirect carbon dioxide carbonation when mixed with glycine and lye. Ammonium acetate's significance underscores its dual role in both the leaching and carbonation processes. This process yielded calcium carbonate with particle sizes smaller than 100 nm, with a purity of 98% and a single vaterite phase. The calcium carbide residue demonstrated an impressive CO 2 uptake rate of 23.5%. Ammonium acetate exhibited an efficiency of 79.2% as a leaching agent. The ammonium acetate method demonstrated enhanced environmental friendliness and facilitated a more efficient carbon uptake rate of 23.5% compared to conventional indirect methods. Furthermore, the addition of lye, glycine, and ammonium acetate effectively extended the nucleation time of the calcium carbonate crystals and induced the formation of more vaterite intermediates with smaller particle sizes. The influence mechanism of compound additives on the carbonation reaction was revealed through kinetic analysis and molecular dynamics. This innovative approach offers a promising avenue for simultaneously treating solid waste and reducing CO 2 emission. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Phase selection of calcium carbonate crystals under the induction of lignin monomer model compounds

Huifeng Hu,Yong Zhang,Xiumei Zhang,Hridam Deb,Juming Yao

As an important class of natural resources, lignin and its utilization receive more and more attention. However, it is treated as waste in paper industry and causes serious pollution of natural water bodies. Meanwhile, the uncontrollable surface topography and the crystal form of natural calcium carbonate (CaCO3) severely restrict its application in the industrial field. Biomineralization may provide a perfect solution for these two issues. In this work, two types of specific crystal forms, cinnamic acid & aragonite crystal (CAAs) and cinnamic acid & vaterite crystal (CAVs) were directly synthesized in the presence of cinnamic acid. Two kinds of polymorph states were also found in the growth process of CaCO3. The structural properties of CAAs and CAVs as well as their polymorph states were characterized by FESEM, AFM, FTIR spectroscopy, XRD and TGA. The results showed that CAAs and CAVs held the crystal forms of aragonite and vaterite, respectively. The crystal forms of CaCO3 followed the growth rule that they dynamically changed from calcite to aragonite and then to vaterite. The formation mechanism is illustrated in the nucleation and crystal growth processes of CaCO3; cinnamic acid first formed various surfaces with the change in ambient conditions. These made CaCO3 to form different crystal forms and surface structures.

Growth of Aragonite CaCO3 Whiskers in a Microreactor with Calcium Dodecyl Benzenesulfonate as a Control Agent

Le Du,Yujun Wang,Kai Wang,Guangsheng Luo

This study presents a novel technique for the controllable preparation of aragonite CaCO3 whiskers using a microdispersion process. Calcium dodecyl benzenesulfonate [Ca(Ar–SO3)2] was first used as an additive for controlling the crystalline form. A homogeneous concentration distribution in the system was achieved due to the efficient micromixing. The effects of various operation parameters on the whiskers were determined, and the reaction conditions were optimized. The mechanism of the additive was discussed. The dynamic adsorption of Ca(Ar–SO3)2 on the surface of whiskers was experimentally demonstrated to be in charge of maintaining the one-dimensional growth and the high purity of the crystals. Aragonite CaCO3 with a crystalline purity of 98–99.5% was controllably synthesized at room temperature. The whiskers were approximately 27 μm in length and had an aspect ratio of about 58.

A novel approach for the preparation of low thermal conductivity foam concrete with γ-C2S carbonation and aragonite-reinforced pore walls

Yuhan Wang,Qingyuan Xu,Bao Lu,Jinfeng Sun,Zhonglun Zhang,Chuanlin Hu,Guihua Hou

In the preparation of foam concrete (FC), reconciling the contradiction of porosity (or thermal conductivity) and mechanical strength poses a significant challenge. In this paper, the strategy of regulating the carbonation of γ-2CaO·SiO 2 (γ-C 2 S) to form aragonite whiskers for strengthening the pore wall was proposed, thereby achieving the highest possible total porosity while meeting the required compressive strength. The controlled formation of aragonite and its strengthening mechanism of pore wall, as well as the optimum preparation conditions of FC formed by γ-C 2 S carbonation were studied. The results indicated that the CaCO 3 in the pore walls predominantly existed in the form of whisker-like aragonite under the action of modifier MgCl 2 ·6H 2 O, and the mass content of aragonite achieved 53.4 %, almost without calcite. Under the optimum preparation conditions, the thermal conductivity and compressive strength of aragonite foam concrete (AFC) were 0.0496 W/m·K and 0.5 MPa, respectively. Compared with calcite foam concrete (CFC) formed without the regulator, the compressive strength was increased by 150 % and the thermal conductivity was decreased by 5.2 %, it showed that thermal conductivity and mechanical strength were reconciled. Based on pore structure analysis, the formation of aragonite reduced the pore wall porosity (PP) and refined the most probable pore size. Furthermore, the CO 2 absorption rate reached 45.4 % under the carbonation of 84 h. This provides a new perspective for the preparation of low thermal conductivity FC with CO 2 sequestration functionality.
