Sulphide minerals commonly existing in the form of polymetallic ores are the essential objects in the fields of acid mine drainage and biohydrometallurgy. Although interactions between different minerals have been studied extensively, there are no research reports on the interactions between marmatite and chalcocite. Hence, the interactions between marmatite and chalcocite in biotic/abiotic leaching and electrochemical systems were investigated. Electrochemical tests show that the open circuit potential of marmatite is 39 mV lower than that of chalcocite. Theoretically, marmatite should react as an anode in this galvanic couple, thus dissolving faster. However, leaching results suggest that the introduction of marmatite promotes chalcocite dissolution but its own dissolution was impeded, despite a slight acceleration observed during the early stage in abiotic systems. The results of this study reveal that the solution factors including oxidation-reduction potential, iron concentrations, and microbial concentrations might have significant effects that are more potent than the galvanic effect. The unpredictable inhibition of marmatite dissolution might be attributable to the existence of excess Cu 2+ liberated from the chalcocite. A further deduction proposed that a synergistic dissolution of marmatite and chalcocite can be achieved by adjusting their mass ratios to attain a suitable Cu 2+ concentration.

This study explores the selective depression mechanism of pyrite by proanthocyanidins (PC) during chalcopyrite-pyrite flotation separation. The selective inhibition effect of inhibitor PC was examined through flotation experiments. The depression mechanism of PC on pyrite was analyzed employing X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, selective adsorption tests, adsorption experiments, contact angle measurement, and zeta potential measurement. The artificial mixed mineral flotation test of chalcopyrite-pyrite at a ratio of 1:12 was conducted under pH 7, PC concentration of 75 mg/L, and PAX concentration of 18.75 mg/L. The copper concentrate exhibited a recovery rate of 88.97%, with a copper grade of 29.43%. The sulfur grade in copper concentrate was 40.35%, and the pyrite recovery rate was 1.97%. PC can be used as a potential depressant of pyrite. adsorption experiments and Zeta potential measurement indicated that PC treatment significantly impeded PAX adsorption on the pyrite surface, as confirmed by XPS test results and Ion adsorption analysis.

Bornite and arsenopyrite are common sulfide minerals in copper ores. The similar physicochemical properties of these minerals pose challenges for their effective separation through traditional flotation methods. This study systematically investigated the impact of sodium persulfate (Na 2 S 2 O 8 ) treatment on the flotation performance of both bornite and arsenopyrite through single-mineral and artificially mixed mineral flotation tests. The artificially mixed flotation experiment revealed that at an initial pH of 4, a Na 2 S 2 O 8 concentration of 5 × 10 −3 mol/L and NaBX (5 × 10 −5 mol/L), bornite and arsenopyrite exhibited recoveries of 80.01 % and 24.04 %, respectively. The effects of Na 2 S 2 O 8 on mineral surfaces were analyzed through contact angle measurement, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive spectroscopy, zeta potential measurement, and local electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results confirmed that Na 2 S 2 O 8 treatment significantly altered the arsenopyrite surface but had a small impact on the bornite surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that Na 2 S 2 O 8 treatment generated numerous hydrophilic oxides on the arsenopyrite surface, such as sulfates and arsenates, which increased its hydrophilicity and reduced floatability. This study provides theoretical insights into the separation of copper and arsenic in copper ores to reduce environmental pollution.

The selective separation of molybdenite from chalcopyrite is difficult because of their similar floatability in the presence of a collector. In this study, rhodanine-3-acetic acid (3-Rd) was first applied in molybdenite flotation as a novel chalcopyrite depressant, and its depression effect and mechanism were systematically investigated by flotation tests, density functional theory (DFT) calculation, zeta potential measurements, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. Single mineral flotation results indicated that 3-Rd can selectively depress chalcopyrite flotation, whereas its effect on molybdenite is negligible. Mixed mineral and bench flotation tests further proved that 3-Rd is an efficient chalcopyrite depressant. The first-principle periodic calculations based on DFT predicted that 3-Rd prefers to adsorb onto Fe rather than Cu because of the more negative adsorption energy of the COO or CSS group on Fe in the chalcopyrite surface. Zeta potential measurements demonstrated that 3-Rd is adsorbed on chalcopyrite surface more selectively, and its adsorption strength is higher than that on molybdenite surface. XPS analysis further confirmed that 3-Rd is chemisorbed on chalcopyrite surface by binding with Fe active site and is adsorbed on molybdenite surface through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions.

Natural bornite (NBo), a sulfide mineral of copper and iron, is one of the main mineral raw materials for copper extraction. In this study, NBo-activated hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and persulfate processes (PS) for the degradation of minocycline (MNC) in aqueous solution were systemically investigated and compared. The MNC removal rates with the NBo/PS and NBo/H 2 O 2 processes were 86.40% and 87.50%, respectively. The mineralization rate of NBo/PS (33.96%) was higher than that of NBo/H 2 O 2 (29.94%) after reaction for 180 min. The effects of oxidant and activator dosage, pH, common inorganic anions (i.e., Cl − , NO 3 − , and HCO 3 − ), and water composition on MNC degradation were systematically evaluated. In addition, the degradation of MNC in natural water matrix and toxicity evaluation was also studied to better evaluate the feasibility of practical application of those two processes. The results of free radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) showed that HO· was the main activated species in the NBo/H 2 O 2 system, while SO 4 · − and HO· were the main activated species in the NBo/PS system. The degradation of MNC in the NBo/PS system was achieved through electron transfer, while the degradation of MNC in the NBo/H 2 O 2 system was mainly achieved through free radical addition. The degradation pathway mainly included deamidation reactions, C-C bond breakage and hydroxylation. Reusability of NBo showed that NBo was considerably stable in activating PS and H 2 O 2 for degradation of MNC, which was cost-effective activator. This work provides a new perspective on the degradation mechanism of pollutants by Fe-Cu bimetallic sulfide activation of PS and H 2 O 2 . Graphical abstract
