The adhesion of soft materials often fails due to stress concentration at the interface. Structural design offers an effective approach to disperse stress at the interface and enhance adhesion properties. Herein, we introduce the concept of discretized stress dispersion to achieve ultrastrong adhesion of soft materials. This involves incorporating discrete structures at the adhesion interface, with each unit structure designed to efficiently disperse stress. We implement this concept by introducing periodic strategic cuts into the adhesive, enabling it to deform into discrete mushroom-shaped structures under peel forces. Utilizing fracture mechanics theory, we demonstrate that such structural design can significantly improve adhesion strength compared to adhesives without structural design. Through 3D printing, we fabricate adhesive samples with strategic cuts, achieving a peak peel force of 3479 N/m, over 100-fold higher than adhesives without cuts (25 N/m). We analyzed stress dispersion of each unit structure through experiments of with different geometric parameters and analyze collaborative effects of multiple structures with theoretical model. Finite element analysis of the peel process highlights the critical role of cohesive zone influenced by geometric parameters, which determines the peak peel force. This concept of discretized stress dispersion advances the development of soft materials with ultrastrong adhesion.

Inspired by natural hierarchical structures, this study presents a novel biomimetic Al/Al 2 O 3 composite featuring a gradient-heterogeneous architecture that effectively addresses the long-standing strength–toughness trade-off in metal–ceramic systems. A high-resolution vat photopolymerization 3D printing process was used to fabricate complex ceramic scaffolds with a multi-scale design, incorporating a turtle shell-inspired gradient in porosity and wall thickness, along with layered, tubular, and hexagonal cellular units derived respectively from nacre, ram horns, and beehives. Through pressure infiltration of molten aluminum, a fully interpenetrating composite with strong interfacial bonding was achieved. The resulting material exhibits a spatially tailored gradient in mechanical properties, achieving a surface strength of 634 MPa and a core energy absorption capacity of 14.36 MJ/cm 3 . In situ mechanical testing and finite element analysis reveal that multi-scale synergistic toughening mechanisms—including architecture-guided crack deflection, distributed plastic deformation, and stress redistribution—collectively contribute to the enhanced performance. This work demonstrates the potential of additive manufacturing-enabled structural programming to engineer composites with spatially optimized mechanical properties, offering a new paradigm for the design of advanced structural materials.

s Continuous carbon fiber-toughened ZrB 2 -SiC ceramics matrix composites (C f /ZrB 2 -SiC), which combine the high strength of carbon fiber needled preforms with the ultra-high-temperature ablation resistance of ZrB 2 -SiC ceramics, exhibit complex responses in the extreme thermo-mechanical-oxygen coupling environments. The fracture behavior and damage mechanisms of the lightweight C f /ZrB 2 -SiC composites were investigated by the thermo-mechanical-oxygen coupling tensile tests. The residual strength after oxidation was found to be synergistically reduced by temperature and pre-tensile load, with a linear negative correlation between pre-tensile stress and residual strength. The needled fibers improve the interlaminar toughness but introduce the localized porosity that accelerates oxygen diffusion and oxidative damage. Under air oxidation at 1100°C, pre-tensile stress reopens self-healing microcracks, transforming the oxidation kinetics from diffusion-controlled to reaction-controlled regimes. This study can provide an experimental basis and practical guidance for the design of needled fiber preforms to balance oxidation resistance and mechanical properties.

Fracture energy is the property that characterizes how a material resists crack growth. In a standard measurement of fracture energy, an incision is typically introduced into the specimen. It is known that the measured fracture energy may depend on the incision curvature. However, the underlying mechanism of such dependence remains unclear. In this paper, we prepared polyacrylamide/Ca-alginate hydrogel specimens featuring incisions with circular tips of varying diameters. The fracture energy was subsequently measured through a pure shear test. We observed that the fracture energy is proportional to the incision diameter, with a slope comparable to the work of fracture for larger tip diameters. Conversely, for smaller tip diameters, the fracture energy remains independent of the incision diameter and aligns with the intrinsic fracture energy. This transition occurs at an incision diameter comparable to a material-specific scale known as the fractocohesive length. Notably, the fractocohesive length, rather than the inelastic zone scale, successfully explains the dependence of fracture energy measurement on incision curvature. The difference between these two length scales of the material here spans three orders of magnitude. These results will be helpful for establishing standards for measuring fracture energy of soft materials.

In this study, the effect of microcrcaks strengthening on damage evolution of Al 2 TiO 5 (AT) flexible ceramics was investigated by acoustic emission (AE). Results reveal that with increasing content of ZrO 2 , the strength of AT flexible ceramics improves gradually and the strain increases at first then decreases. When the content of ZrO 2 is 12% and 8%, the strength and strain at maximum stress are increased by 154.92% and 38.27%, respectively. In addition, thanks to the “strengthening effect” of ZrTiO 4 on grain boundary microcracks, the damage development thresholds ( σ min and σ onset ), elastic modulus and fracture toughness of AT flexible ceramics modified with ZrO 2 are significantly improved. Moreover, the visible transverse cracks and matrix shedding in ATZ-0 are the most, but the cumulative AE damage events in ATZ-8 and ATZ-4 are more than ATZ-0 at late stage, for which the fracture of ZrTiO 4 glass phase and crack branching induced by ZrTiO 4 should be responsible.

This study investigates how cracks spread in carbon fiber (CF) reinforced phthalonitrile (PN) composites (CFRPN) and ways to modify them. The dominance of plasticity in crack propagation within CFRPN presents potential safety hazards in real-world scenarios. Given the demands of the molding process and operational conditions, it is imperative that interfacial modification materials exhibit exceptional resistance to high temperatures. This research implements a high-temperature-stable interfacial modification strategy, employing self-assembled polydopamine (PDA) as the sizing agent for CF fabrics, aimed at enhancing the interfacial crack growth stability and ensuring high-temperature resistance. Experimental results indicate that PDA treatment significantly improves the type I interlaminar fracture toughness and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of CFRPN. Scanning electron microscopy analysis further reveals that after the PDA coating, cracks predominantly propagate through the PN resin rather than at the interface between the fiber and resin. Therefore, using PDA as a sizing agent for CF not only strengthens the interface bonding between PN and CF but also effectively inhibits the unstable crack propagation, thereby significantly enhancing the composite’s load transfer efficiency, interfacial type I fracture toughness, and ILSS.

As a typical kind of multiple flaws, collinear flaws are particularly detrimental to the mechanical properties of ceramics. Here, two identical collinear micron-sized flaws with controllable length and spacing were successfully fabricated in ZrB 2 -20 vol% SiC (ZS) ceramic using femtosecond laser , and the effect of flaw length and spacing on flexural strength as well as fracture behavior (i.e., load-displacement curve and fractography) of ZS ceramic were investigated. The flexural strength almost remained constant when the flaw spacing was less than the critical value, which strongly depended on the flaw length, then increased gradually with increasing flaw spacing and reached a plateau. If the ratio between flaw spacing and flaw length was small enough, flaws would tend to coalescence first before fracture, owing to the strong interaction between flaws. If the ratio was too large, the center of the mirror area in fracture surface would be offset.

The strategy of interlaminar toughening shows tremendous potential in addressing delamination failure in glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites. In contrast to commonly used particulate or nanofibrous interleaves, mesh structures feature a more continuous and uniform architecture, which confers notable benefits in terms of scalability. Despite this potential, there is currently a lack of systematic studies on the role of mesh structures in interlaminar toughening. Therefore, this study investigates the interlaminar toughening behavior of polyamide (PA) mesh, known for its excellent mechanical properties, as an interlayer in GFRP, focusing on the effects of different mesh densities and thicknesses. Through different fracture tests and failure analyses, the correlation between mode I/II fracture behaviors and characteristic parameters of PA6 mesh was elucidated. The results indicate that by introducing the PA6 mesh, the mode I and mode II fracture toughness can be improved by 109% and 69%, respectively. This enhancement is attributed to the structural toughening effect of the PA mesh, including PA fiber bridging, plastic deformation, and fracture, as well as its ability to induce controlled crack deflection and guidance. Upon analysis, the primary factor influencing the toughening efficiency of the PA mesh is the mesh porosity. Only within an appropriate porosity range (20% ~ 60%) can the interlaminar toughening effect of the PA mesh be activated. Under this premise, thickness, as the secondary dominant factor, has a positive regulatory effect on the interlaminar fracture toughness of the PA intercalated laminates.

Bioinspired structures provide promising paths to address the inherent brittleness of structural ceramics. Here, we proposed a hierarchically laminated structure to enhance the damage tolerance and fracture toughness of SiC ceramics. The SiC ceramics were formed by tape casting with graphene platelets (GPLs) as the reinforcement, and then sintered by hot pressing and liquid silicon infiltration. Thus, hierarchically laminated architectures were constructed by the casting sheets, the directionally distributed GPLs and the in-situ β-SiC grains. With the increase of sintering aid, the bulk density of the laminated ceramics increased from 3.09 ± 0.03 g/cm 3 to 3.18 ± 0.02 g/cm 3 ascribed to infiltration of the glassy phases and the liquid silicon. Due to the hierarchically laminated structure, the flexural strength increased from 299.4 ± 4.1 MPa to 350.61 ± 9.5 MPa with the infiltration of liquid silicon, while the fracture toughness increased from 7.6 ± 0.8–10.4 ± 0.5 MPa·m 1/2 ascribed to the novel toughening mechanisms.
