Flexible bending sensors are crucial components of flexible/wearable electronics. However, their broad application is restricted by their difficulty in sensing different bending directions and, more importantly, their significant output attenuation after long cycles. Herein, a new design of an All-in-One piezoelectric bending sensor is proposed, in which double-deck, cross-over 3D interdigital microelectrodes (silver nanowires (Ag NWs)) are embedded in a piezoelectric polymer film (poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene (P(VDF-TrFE))). The piezoelectric film with the embedded 3D microelectrodes exhibits a high anisotropy coefficient ( η 90 ∘ ${{\eta }_{90^\circ }}$ > 1) based on dual piezoelectric modes ( d 31 and d 33 ), which renders it more sensitive to different bending directions. More importantly, the homogeneous interconnected interface and heterogeneous microinterlocked interface formed inside the sensor significantly enhance its interface mechanical properties, with at least a tensile strength of 51 MPa, a shear strength of 28 MPa, and an interfacial toughness of 300 J m −2 , which are nearly two orders of magnitude greater than those of conventional sandwich architectures. The prepared All-in-One sensor shows an extremely stable piezoelectric output over as many as 16 00 000 bending cycles, which represents a remarkable breakthrough. Furthermore, a single sensor can be used to remotely control the multidirectional motion of a smart car, demonstrating enormous potential in practical applications.

Hydrogels are considered as an ideal material for bioelectronic devices to fulfill the requirements of various applications. However, integrating self-adhesion properties, high stretchability, good sensing performance, and direction-aware functionality into a single hydrogel strain sensor remains a significant challenge and has been seldom reported. In this study, through the characteristics of montmorillonite (MMT) adsorption, we designed a gradient intersecting strategy based on bifunctional MMT nanoparticles. These nanoparticles act as both cross-linking agents and conductive components to strongly intersect the hydrogel and the conductive networks, preventing them from sliding against each other. Thus, the hydrogel sensor had a wide range of adjustable mechanical properties and good adhesion on various substrates. Moreover, the hydrogel sensor can detect both large- and small-scale human activities and achieves direction awareness. Importantly, the hydrogel sensor can be used to construct a wireless sensor system to monitor human movement in real time. This work provides a strategy for the design of the next-generation flexible strain sensors and a method for the development of multifunctional MMT materials, expanding the application of both MMT materials and hydrogel sensors.

Wearable strain sensors have made great progress in sensing performance, stretchability and durability. However, practical applications of these sensors are still quite challenging because they are incapable of detecting multi-degree-of-freedom strains due to the interference of multidirectional strains. Herein, a high-sensing-performance, direction-aware and transparent strain sensor is reported based on antimony-doped tin oxide oriented nanofiber (ATO-ONF) films prepared by electrospinning. The monolayer ATO-ONF strain sensor shows remarkable anisotropic sensing performance, namely GFs of 250 and 1.2 for the nanofiber orientation and its transverse directions, suggesting the realization of the unidirectional sensing capability of the strain sensor, i.e. , only responding to strains along the nanofiber direction. In addition, this strain sensor also exhibits high transparency with a light transmittance of ∼ 80%, and excellent sensing performance including high sensitivity, high linearity, low hysteresis, good repeatability and durability (>2000 cycles). Based on these superior sensing properties, the direction-aware biaxial strain sensor is designed by orthogonally stacking ATO-ONF films, by which the predicted magnitude and direction of the tensile strains agree well with those of the actual strains. Furthermore, the multi-degree-of-freedom applications of direction-aware strain sensors in human motion monitoring and human–machine interaction are demonstrated, showing a great application potential in next-generation wearable electronics.
