Intrinsic Catalytic Activity of Gold/Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Composites in Squaric Acid-Iron(II/III) System

Yanxia Li,Cheng Jiang,Shengheng Lin,Jiajia Lai,Liyun Zheng,Pengjun Xu

In this paper, gold/multi-walled carbon nanotube (Au/MWCNTs) composites were prepared via in situ reductions. The synthesized materials could effectively catalyze the system of square acid (SQA)-iron(II/III) to produce a significant color reaction. By designing the orthogonal test of three-factor and three-level, the three factors of sodium formate solution concentration, ultrasonic time and synthesis reaction time were optimized in the process of Au/MWCNTs preparation. Results showed that the Au/MWCNTs had the best catalytic activity under the conditions of sodium formate solution concentration of 400 mmol/L, ultrasonic for 30 min and reaction for 4 h. In a subsequent comparison with H2O2, it found that the catalytic performance of 1 mg of Au/MWCNTs composite was equivalent to that of H2O2with the concentration of 0.28 mmol/L. It demonstrated that the prepared Au/MWCNTs composites had good catalytic activity, stable color and low background noise, indicating a good prospect in various fields including that of catalytic reaction, sensing analysis, and nanomaterials labeling.Keywords:Au/MWCNTs composites;catalytic activity;square acid-iron(II/III) system

Experimental and Theoretical Evidence for Supramolecular Self-Assembly and Hydrogen Bonding between Squaric Acid and 2,6-Bis(2-benzimidazolyl)pyridine

HU Ai-Bin,PAN Zhi-Quan,CHENG Qing-Rong,ZHOU Hong

Supramolecular complex (1) was obtained from a mixture of squaric acid and 2,6-bis(2-benzimidazolyl)pyridine in deuterated dimethylsulfoxide (d-DMSO) and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure data showed that 1 was a one-dimensional chain polymer assembled through π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding interactions. Infrared vibrational spectra of 1 were measured at different temperatures and sample concentrations in carbon tetrachloride. Moreover, the hydrogen bonding in the crystals was further evaluated by density functional theory (DFT) and atoms in molecules (AIM) theory. The calculated hydrogen bonding energies were about 135.65 and 49.40 J·mol-1, respectively.

Self-Regulated Bilateral Anchoring Enables Efficient Charge Transport Pathways for High-Performance Rigid and Flexible Perovskite Solar Cells

Zheng Haiying,Liu Guozhen,Dong Xinhe,Chen Feifan,Wang Chao,Yu Hongbo,Zhang Zhihua,Pan Xu

Interface modification has been demonstrated as an effective means to enhance the performance of perovskite solar cells. However, the effect depends on the anchoring mode and strength of the interfacial molecules, which determines whether long-term robust interface for carrier viaduct can be achieved under operational light illumination. Herein, we select squaric acid (SA) as the interfacial molecule between the perovskite and SnO 2 layer and propose a self-regulated bilateral anchoring strategy. The unique four-membered ring conjugated structure and dicarboxylic acid groups facilitate stable hydrogen bonds and coordination bonds at both SnO 2 /SA and SA/PbI 2 interfaces. The self-transforming property of SA enables the dynamic bilateral anchoring at the buried interface, ultimately releasing residual stress and constructing a stable interfacial molecular bridge. The results show that SA molecular bridge not only can effectively inhibit the generation of diverse charged defects but also serves as an effective electron transport pathway, resulting in improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) from 23.19 to 25.50% and excellent stability at the maximum power point. Additionally, the PCEs of the flexible and large-area (1 cm 2 ) devices were increased to 24.92% and 24.01%, respectively, demonstrating the universal applicability of the bilateral anchoring to PSCs based on different substrates and larger area.

Squaraine dye/Ti3C2Tx MXene organic-inorganic hybrids for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Yanxiang Liu,Yuanlin Li,Aijun Li,Yu Gao,Xiao-Feng Wang,Ritsuko Fujii,Shin-ichi Sasaki

MXenes, a new family of 2D nanostructured materials , have been widely studied in the field of artificial photosynthesis due to their outstanding physicochemical properties. In this work, a series of 2,4-bis[4-( N , N -dibutylamino)phenyl] squaraine ( SQ ) derivatives with different number of hydroxyl groups were hybridized with Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets , and the organic–inorganic hybrid photocatalysts were applied for water-splitting hydrogen evolution . The mass ratios of SQ @Ti 3 C 2 T x were optimized to 4 wt% for each SQ , and the best hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) rate of 28.6 μmol h −1 g −1 was achieved by SQ-3 with four OH groups. The photocatalytic ability of the hybrid comes from the outstanding light harvesting of SQ dye, sufficient active sites of Ti 3 C 2 T x , and efficient separation and transfer of the photogenerated charges via heterojunction between SQ aggregates and Ti 3 C 2 T x . This work firstly demonstrates an example of SQ sensitizer combined with MXene for hydrogen generation, which provides a new insight to further explore the MXene-based hybrid nanomaterials for water splitting hydrogen evolution.

Zwitterionic Polarization-Engineering Covalent Organic Frameworks for Targeted Ferroptosis-Synergistic Photothermal Immunotherapy

Jiarong Liang,Si Wang,Zhonghui Ma,Fei Kuang,Xiangkun Li,Zhilong Gong,Jinzhu Su,Zhiyi Wang

Combining efficient photocatalytic activity with precise targeting is crucial for covalent organic framework (COF)-based nanomedicines to remodel the immunosuppressive microenvironment and sensitize “cold” tumors to immunotherapy. Herein, we constructed two isomorphic frameworks featuring distinct electronic topologies: a zwitterionic squaric acid (SA) COF with inherent electrostatic asymmetry, and a charge-neutral terephthaldehyde (TA) COF. The spatial divergence of ion centers in SA COF triggers intense molecular-level ionic displacement polarization, creating a robust internal electric field. Such unique field-effect regulation accelerates photogenerated charge separation for efficient superoxide anion production, enhances intersystem crossing for singlet oxygen generation, and promotes nonradiative energy relaxation for high-performance photothermal conversion under dual-wavelength irradiation. After PEGylation and iRGD modification, the formulated SA@PEG-iRGD exhibits excellent physiological stability and active deep tumor penetration. With near-infrared absorption, it enables high-contrast photoacoustic imaging for guided dual-wavelength (660/808 nm) phototherapy. This spatiotemporally controlled therapeutic cascade triggers lethal ferroptosis and precise photothermal ablation, potently activating immunogenic cell death. Combined with aPD-L1 therapy, it eliminates primary tumors, produces abscopal effects, and establishes immune memory against recurrence and metastasis. This study highlights the value of electronic structure engineering in COF-based precision nanomedicine.

Enhanced the Trans-Cleavage Activity of CRISPR-Cas12a Using Metal-Organic Frameworks as Stimulants for Efficient Electrochemical Sensing of Circulating Tumor DNA

Shuai Wu,Yincheng Liu,Tianyu Zeng,Tianci Zhou,Yanting Sun,Ying Deng,Juan Zhang,Genxi Li,Yongmei Yin

Continued development of clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-powered biosensing system on the electrochemical interface is vital for accurate and timely diagnosis in clinical practice. Herein, an electrochemical biosensor based on manganese metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-enhanced CRISPR (MME-CRISPR) is proposed that enables the efficient detection of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA). In this design, customized enzyme stimulants (Mn 2+ ) are co-assembled with Cas12a/crRNA to form enzyme-MOF composites, which can be released quickly under mild conditions. The MOFs-induced proximity effect can continuously provide adequate Mn 2+ to sufficiently interact with Cas12a/crRNA during the release process, enhancing the trans-cleavage activity of complex available for biosensor construction. The MOFs-based enzyme biocomposites also afford efficient protection against various external stimulus. It is demonstrated that the developed biosensor can achieve ultrasensitive detection of epidermal growth factor receptor L858R mutation in ctDNA with a low detection limit of 0.28 f m without pre-amplification. Furthermore, the engineered mismatch crRNA enables the biosensor based on MME-CRISPR to detect single nucleotide variant with a high signal-to-noise ratio. More importantly, it has been successfully used to detect the targets in clinical practice, requiring low-dose samples and a short time. This strategy is believed to shed new light on the applications of cancer diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance.

A prelithiation pathway with high-release efficiency and self-enhanced interface chemistry to achieve stable Li-ion full cells

Jiabao Lai,Jiao You,Jianhui Zhu,Ming Yang,Yanyi Wang,Shengkui Zhong,Hongwei Mi,Chuanxin He,Dingtao Ma,Peixin Zhang

First-cycle irreversible lithium loss critically limits lithium-ion battery capacity. This study proposes the design of unique cathode prelithiation material, carbon sphere-composited lithium squarate (FSL-CS). Among them, the three-dimensional conductive network fabricated through chemical precipitation significantly enhances both electronic conductivity and structural stability. Electrochemical characterization reveals that FSL-CS delivers a compensation capacity of 390.8 mAh·g −1 during initial charging, achieving 92 % efficiency in lithium release, which have high-release efficiency. Compared to unmodified one, the composite demonstrates reduced kinetic barriers with a lowered delithiation plateau voltage of 3.97 V (vs. 4.16 V for pristine material). In situ/ex situ analyses confirm the carbon sphere composite strategy establishes self-enhanced interface chemistry. This optimizes interfacial charge transfer, boosting the Li + diffusion coefficient by an order of magnitude and continuously inducing in-situ formation of a gradient organic-inorganic composite cathode electrolyte interphase. Full-cell evaluations show that NCM811||Graphite batteries with 5 % FSL-CS maintain 87.3 % capacity retention after 400 cycles at 1C, while pouch cells retain 70.2 % capacity after 1000 cycles. Theoretical calculation reveals that FSL-CS exhibits a lower lithium migration energy barrier (0.65 eV) compared to conventional Li 2 NiO 2 (1.00 eV). This work provides new design principles for stable organic prelithiation systems featuring high-release efficiency, self-enhanced interfaces, and low-voltage operation.

Oxygen-coordinated MOF membrane facilitated construction of supported Co2P/CoP@C heterostructures for water electrolysis

Chongxi Zhang,Fengting Li,Dong Wu,Qingmeng Guo,Zhanning Liu,Zhikun Wang,Zixi Kang,Lili Fan,Daofeng Sun

Integration of cobalt phosphides (Co2P and CoP) in a carbon matrix shows great promise for developing high-performance catalysts for water electrolysis. Nevertheless, the controlled synthesis of these two phases with an effective interface, uniform dispersion, and a simplified synthesis process is still challenging. Herein, we proposed a strategy that involves pre-construction of the Co/CoO@C heterostructure followed by post-conversion by phosphorization to achieve the precise synthesis of the Co2P/CoP@C heterostructure, which was realized by utilizing a MOF as the self-sacrificial template. The oxygen-coordinated MOF that shows advantages in building the Co/CoO heterostructure was employed in this work and grown into a high-quality membrane via cathodic electrodeposition on the graphite substrate (Gss). The obtained catalyst (Gss-Co2P/CoP@C-800) requires 146 and 365 mV overpotentials to achieve a current density of 100 mA cm−2 for the HER and OER, respectively, and 1.54 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2 for water electrolysis. Beyond the significantly enhanced conductivity that originates from the robust interaction between the MOF and Gss, the establishment of an effective Co2P/CoP interface also plays a pivotal role in contributing to the high performance of Gss-Co2P/CoP@C-800. As revealed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the unique d-orbital electron distribution of Co2P/CoP and the enhanced state density near the Fermi level facilitate its efficient electron transport and render the Co2P/CoP heterostructure region a crucial active site for water electrolysis. This study will provide new insights into the rational design and construction of heterostructures based on MOFs for efficient and green energy conversions.

Squaraine-Linked Magnetic Covalent Organic Framework as a Solid-Phase Extraction Absorbent to Determine Trace Phenylpyrazoles

Li Chen,Cuiyun Zhou,Feng Jiang,Li Zhang,Chuanlai Xu

Phenylpyrazoles are widely used pesticides in the food industry. It is highly desirable to develop efficient pre-treatment and analysis methods to extract and detect phenylpyrazoles in complex food matrices. Herein, the study reports novel squaraine-linked zwitterionic core-shell magnetic covalent organic frameworks (MCOFs),  which are found to be excellent pretreatment materials for the detection of trace phenylpyrazoles in samples. By coupling MCOFs to magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) with Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) analysis, the detection of phenylpyrazoles (fipronil, fipronil sulfone, fipronil sulfide, fipronil de-sulfoxide, fipronil desulfinyl, ethiprole, and flufiprole) is achieved and shows good linearity at concentrations of 1–800 µg L −1 (R 2 ≥ 0.9930). The limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), and recovery rates are 0.01–0.50 µg kg −1 , 0.04-1.72 µg kg −1 , and 70.96–115.32%, respectively. More importantly, this method is successfully applied to determine the phenylpyrazoles in commercial egg, poultry, milk, jujube, cabbage, tea, and rice with a detection rate of ≈0.04%. Therefore, the developed method may contribute to a new strategy for the purification and multi-target extraction of complex food matrices.

Multi-Responsive COF-Enhanced Smart Actuator

Gong Cheng,Chao Sui,Weizhe Hao,Zifu Zang,Yushun Zhao,Yichen Zhou,Chenxi Zhao,Lei Wen,Junjiao Li,Yuna Sang,Xiaodong He,Chao Wang

Smart composite materials are attracting increasing attention for their novel stimulus-response characteristics. Among them, Cellulose nanofibers (CNF)-based smart composites are widely used due to their excellent properties. For enhancing the response rate and stability of CNF-based smart composite actuator, a novel covalent organic framework (COF) nanoparticle is synthesized via molecular design to enhance CNF-based multi-responsive composite materials. COF-TASA, characterized by a high specific surface area, exhibits the highest photothermal conversion efficiency of 79.9% for COF materials to date. A multi-stimuli responsive actuator is prepared through the compounding of COF-TASA, CNF, and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The smart membrane demonstrates a reversible ability to change shape when exposed to near-infrared (NIR) light and humidity. This is caused by the asymmetric deformation of the COC and PVDF layers. Finally, the mechanism for the enhancement of the smart response rate of the system by COF-TASA is successfully elucidated through experiments and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, indicating that the introduction of COF forms ordered channels in the COC, greatly enhancing the specific surface area and the transport speed of water molecules. This COF-enhanced smart actuator is anticipated to provide important solutions for smart control, smart detection, and environmental energy collection.

Hollow but perforated C/Co/Mo2C cubes enhance electromagnetic absorption

Xinghang Duan,Qiaolin Li,Tiantian Cao,Shengxiang Xiong,Gang Chen,Chengjun Dong,Hongtao Guan,Zongyou Yin

The development of advanced electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbers is crucial for applications in stealth technology and EM interference shielding. A major challenge in this field is achieving high absorption efficiency across a broad frequency range while maintaining lightweight and structurally robust materials. In this study, we successfully developed a precise and flexible synthesis strategy to prepare hollow C/Co/Mo2C cubes using Zn/Co(C4O4)(H2O)2 as a flexible template, which offers the advantages of simultaneous removal and easy control of metal Co content. The shell of the hollow cubes can be further optimized by changing the oxidizer content for polypyrrole (PPy). At optimum shell thickness and Co content, the C/Co/Mo2C-0.4 composites, featuring hollow but perforated structures, exhibit superior EM wave absorption properties, with a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of −73.46 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.20 GHz at 2.0 mm with 15 wt% filler. Detailed investigations reveal that the hollow C/Co/Mo2C-0.4 cubes provide polarization loss, conduction loss, magnetic loss, and optimal impedance matching characteristics, significantly enhancing EM wave absorption performance. This work offers a promising strategy for assembling multiple components into a hollow architecture, offering superior molybdenum carbide microwave absorbers.

Single-Atom Mn–N4 Sites Engineered in Carbon Nanofiber Networks for AEMFC Oxygen Reduction

Chao Ge,Yunlan Gu,Bin He,Yanqing Wang,Yawen Tang,Tongfei Li

The advancement of catalysts that are both platinum-group-metal (PGM)-free and iron-free is essential for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which is kinetically slow, particularly in anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). One of the primary obstacles lies in achieving adequate activity and stability within the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) under real-world hydrogen-air operating conditions. Herein, an effective MnN4 site encased within N-doped carbon nanofibers (denoted as MnN4@N-CNFs) is designed for efficient ORR electrocatalysis. Benefiting from the electronic structure modulation of MnN4 moieties through strong interfacial coupling with the carbon matrix, and structural advantages of the 3D hierarchical porosity synergizing with N-doped carbon-MnN4 coordination systems, the as-resultant MnN4@N-CNFs demonstrate a high half-wave potential of 0.89 V, outstanding durability, and impressive methanol tolerance under alkaline environments, outperforming commercial Pt/C and a diversity of reported counterparts. Notably, the engineered catalyst demonstrates remarkable fuel cell performance with a peak power density of 222.0 mW cm–2 during practical AEMFC operation, while maintaining stable operation for over 15 h, representing a 3-fold enhancement over conventional Pt/C-based counterparts. This study establishes fundamental design principles for high-efficiency AEMFCs through atomic-level engineering of precisely coordinated metal–N–C active sites, providing a robust framework for next-generation electrocatalyst development.
