Manure fertilization can enhance the activity of soil enzymes involved in cellulose degradation, thereby generating positive legacy effects on soil organic carbon sequestration when crop residue incorporation is implemented. However, it remains unclear how manure fertilization regulates the cellobiohydrolase (CBH)-producing microbial community and the linkages between this regulation and the enhanced soil CBH activity. This study investigated the relationship between soil cellulose degradation potential, CBH activity, chemical properties, and the cbhI -harboring fungal community in an upland Ultisol subjected to four long-term fertilization treatments (no fertilization, mineral fertilization, swine manure fertilization, and mineral plus swine manure fertilization). The soil cellulose degradation potential and CBH activity in the manure treatment increased by 108 % and 233 % compared to the no-fertilization control, respectively. Those in the mineral plus manure treatment increased by 107 % and 108 % compared to the mineral treatment, respectively. Manure fertilization significantly increased the abundance of cbhI -harboring fungal community and altered its composition, while exerting no significant influence on its diversity. Sordariomycetes and Leotiomycetes were dominant and indictor taxa within the functional fungal community under manure fertilization. The co-occurrence networks within the cbhI -harboring fungal community showed greater complexity and stability across the manure-amended soils compared to the non-manure-amended soils. Soil CBH activity was closely associated with the abundance and composition of cbhI -harboring fungal community, both of which were strongly influenced by soil pH and nutrient content and stoichiometric ratios. The structural equation modeling revealed that the shifts in the functional fungal community outcompeted soil pH in influencing soil CBH activity. The findings of this study collectively suggest that the enhanced soil CBH activity following long-term application of swine manure is primarily attributed to the proliferation of r-strategist cbhI -harboring fungi, which is driven by the improvement in soil nutrient status.

Our study sought to assess how much phosphorus (P) runoff from paddy fields could be cut down by fertilizer management and inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. A field experiment was conducted in Lalin River basin, in the northeast China: six nitrogen–phosphorus–potassium fertilizer levels were provided (0, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% of the recommended fertilizer supply), with or without inoculation with Glomus mosseae . The volume and concentrations of particle P (PP) and dissolved P (DP) were measured for each runoff during the rice growing season. It was found that the seasonal P runoff, including DP and PP, under the local fertilization was 3.7 kg/ha, with PP, rather than DP, being the main form of P in runoff water. Additionally, the seasonal P runoff dropped only by 8.9% when fertilization decreased by 20%; rice yields decreased with declining fertilization. We also found that inoculation increased rice yields and decreased P runoff at each fertilizer level and these effects were lower under higher fertilization. Conclusively, while rice yields were guaranteed arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculation and fertilizer management would play a key role in reducing P runoff from paddy fields.

Understanding the effects of changing climate and long-term human activities on soil organic carbon (SOC) and the mediating roles of microorganisms is critical to maintain soil C stability in agricultural ecosystem. Here, we took samples from a long-term soil transplantation experiment, in which large transects of Mollisol soil in a cold temperate region were translocated to warm temperate and mid-subtropical regions to simulate different climate conditions, with a fertilization treatment on top. This study aimed to understand fertilization effect on SOC and the role of soil microorganisms featured after long-term community incubation in warm climates. After 12 years of soil transplantation, fertilization led to less reduction of SOC, in which aromatic C increased and the consumption of O-alkyl C and carbonyl C decreased. Soil live microbes were analyzed using propidium monoazide to remove DNAs from dead cells, and their network modulization explained 60.4% of variations in soil labile C. Single-cell Raman spectroscopy combined with D 2 O isotope labeling indicated a higher metabolic activity of live microbes to use easily degradable C after soil transplantation. Compared with non-fertilization, there was a significant decrease in soil α- and β-glucosidase and delay on microbial growth with fertilization in warmer climate. Moreover, fertilization significantly increased microbial necromass as indicated by amino sugar content, and its contribution to soil resistant C reached 22.3%. This study evidentially highlights the substantial contribution of soil microbial metabolism and necromass to refractory C of SOC with addition of nutrients in the long-term.

In practical sweet cherry production, grafting onto rootstocks is a common practice to enhance environmental adaptability. Rootstocks play a crucial role in influencing scion growth and fruit quality by regulating the absorption and utilization of mineral elements. In this study, the influence of five rootstocks with or without root fertilization during the fruit color conversion period on the fruit quality of sweet cherry ‘Summit’ was observed. The physicochemical characteristics, external color characteristics, and total anthocyanin content of ‘Summit’ were significantly affected by both rootstock and fertilization, with an interaction between the two factors. The content of certain sugar components, organic acid components and phenolic acid components in ‘Summit’ were significantly affected by rootstocks and fertilization. ‘Summit’ grafted on Gisela 5 and H22 exhibited higher sugar content, while ‘Summit’ grafted on H11 and H17 exhibited higher organic and phenolic acid content.

Due to sewage irrigation, manure fertilizer application or other agricultural activities, antibiotics have been introduced into farmland as an emerging contaminant , existing with other agrochemicals . However, the potential influences of antibiotics on the efficiency of agrochemicals and crops health are still unclear. In this work, the effect of antibiotics on fertilization efficiency and pea yield was evaluated, and the mechanism was explored in view of soil microbiome. Nitrogen utilization and pea yield were decreased by antibiotics. In specific, the weight of seeds decreased 9.5 % by 5 mg/kg antibiotics and decreased 25.1 % by 50 mg/kg antibiotics. For N nutrient in pea, antibiotics resulted in 62.5 %–63.7 % decrease in amino acid content and 8.3 %–35.3 % decrease in inorganic-N content. Further research showed that antibiotics interfered with N cycle in soil, inhibiting urea decomposition and denitrification process by reducing function genes ure C, nir K and nor B in soil, thus decreasing N availability. Meanwhile, antibiotics destroyed the enzyme function in N assimilation. This work evaluated the environmental risk of antibiotics from fertilization efficiency and N utilization in crop. Antibiotics could not only affect N cycle, limiting the decomposition of N fertilizer, but also affect N utilization in plants, thus affecting the yield and even the quality of leguminous crops.

Microplastics (MPs) pollution has caused a threat to soil ecosystem diversity and functioning globally. Recently, an increasing number of studies have reported effects of MPs on soil ecosystems. However, these studies mainly focused on soil bacterial communities and a few limited functional genes, which is why MPs effects on soil ecosystems are still not fully understood. Fertilization treatment often coinsides with MPs exposure in practice. Here, we studied effects of an environmentally relevant concentration of polyethylene on soil properties, microbial communities, and functions under different soil types and fertilization history. Our results showed that 0.2% PE MPs exposure could affect soil pH, but this effect varied according to soil type and fertilization history. Long-term fertilization history could alter effects of MPs on soil bacterial and fungal communities in diverse farmland ecosystems (P < 0.05). Soil fungal communities are more sensitive to MPs than bacterial communities under 0.2% PE MPs exposure. MPs exposure has a greater impact on the soil ecosystem with a lower microbial diversity and functional genes abundance and increases the abundance of pathogenic microorganisms. These findings provided an integrated picture to aid our understanding of the impact of MPs on diverse farmland ecosystems with different fertilization histories.

Background Vivianite is an intensively studied phosphorus (P) recovery product from wastewater treatment plants. However, its downstream application has not been well-addressed thus restricting P cycling. This study investigated the P fertilizer efficiency of vivianite in pot experiments using ryegrass ( Lolium multiflorum L.) and tomato ( Solanum lycopersicum L.) with two soilless growing media (perlite and quartz). The variation of vivianite during fertilization was examined to elucidate the mechanisms of P release from vivianite, using a recently developed sequential P extraction protocol coupled with light microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Results The mineral fertilizer equivalence (MFE) of vivianite was determined by comparing the P uptake by plants under vivianite treatment to that under mineral P fertilizer treatment, i.e., Ca(H 2 PO 4 ) 2 in this study. It shows that the vivianite-P uptake of ryegrass was positively correlated with time in a 3-month period and its uptake in quartz was faster than that in perlite, leading to a higher MFE of vivianite in quartz than in perlite (15.8–20.3% vs 6.6–7.4%). This should be attributed to the higher P adsorption capacity and lower hydraulic conductivity of perlite, which restricted the vivianite-P dissolution and mobility. The vivianite variation revealed that vivianite-P was mainly released upon vivianite oxidation to ferric (hydr)oxides in perlite, probably given the high aeration condition in this type of growing medium. In quartz, however, the release of vivianite-P was most likely due to vivianite dissolution driven by the plant uptake of P, during which a higher plant uptake of Fe was observed than that in perlite. Conclusions The findings reveal that vivianite can serve as a slow-release P fertilizer, and its fertilizer efficiency is highly related to the properties of the growing media. Quartz is a preferred growing medium over perlite for the efficient fertilization of this sparingly soluble P source. The findings deepen the understanding of P fertilization of vivianite and lay foundation to its utilization as a slow-release P fertilizer for a circular economy of P. Graphical

Although the formation, turnover, and accumulation of soil organic carbon (SOC) are driven by different fertilizer inputs and their subsequent microbial-mediated transformation, the relationship between changes in plant-derived and microbial-derived components and soil microbial life history strategies under different fertilization regimes has not been well explored. In this study, the changes in microbial necromass carbon (MNC), lignin phenols, and glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP), as well as soil microbial life history strategy were determined in a 16-year field experiment in response to different fertilization regimes, including a no-fertilizer control (C), conventional chemical NPK fertilization (NPK), and partial substitutions of the NPK in chemical fertilizers with a low (30 %) or high (60 %) level of straw (0.3S and 0.6S) or cattle manure (0.3M and 0.6M). The results showed that total lignin phenol content and its contribution to SOC were significantly increased by 88.7 % and 74.2 %, respectively, in high-level straw substitution treatment as compared to chemical fertilization. Both high-level straw and cattle manure substitution increased MNC and total GRSP contents, but did not alter their contributions to SOC compared to chemical fertilization. In fertilized treatments, the high-level cattle manure substitution had the lowest and highest bacterial and fungal K/r ratio, respectively. Bacterial K/r ratio was an important factor in predicting bacterial necromass carbon content and there was a significant negative correlation between them. The ratio of ectomycorrhizal to saprotrophic fungi and fungal diversity were important factors for predicting lignin phenol and GRSP contents, respectively. In addition, the SEMs modeling indicated that straw substitution directly affected lignin phenol and MNC accumulation, whereas cattle manure substitution indirectly affected MNC accumulation by affecting microbial life history strategies. In conclusions, agricultural residues inputs support the formation of a multiple carbon pool of SOC compared to chemical fertilization; and microbial life history strategy is an important driver of SOC formation and affects SOC accumulation and stability in agroecosystems.

Microplastics are an emerging threat to soils, but little is known about their effects on soil nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) cycling. In this study, a three-month soil incubation experiment has been conducted to analyze the effects of polyethene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) microplastics in sizes of 0–1 mm and 1–5 mm on soil available phosphate, nitrate, and ammonium contents under different fertilization regimes. Soil phosphorus and nitrogen availability were continuously determined in-situ by ion-exchange membrane method during the incubation. Microplastic surface chemical composition and the specific surface area were analyzed by FTIR and BET, respectively. The 16s rRNA sequencing of soil bacterial communities as well as soil pH have been determined after the incubation. The results showed that the presence of microplastics could significantly (P < 0.05) decrease soil available phosphate content from 122.61 mg P L −1 to 63.43 mg P L −1 . The addition of PP microplastics could significantly increase soil available ammonium content from 0.94 mg N L −1 to 1.53 mg N L −1 . Since microplastics had undetectable specific surface area and limited effects on soil microorganisms, adsorption and microorganism alteration functions might not be the main drivers of microplastic effects on soil phosphorus and nitrogen.

Pyrolytic biochar (PL-BC, pyrochar) and hydrothermal biochar (HT-BC, hydrochar) derived from branches and leaves of tea plants had different pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total carbon nitrogen content, BET surface area, total pore volume, average pore diameter, and functional groups. HT-BC had a larger specific surface area and more functional groups than PL-BC. Ralstonia Bcul-1 ( R -B) was the dominant and functional bacteria in a fertilized vegetable soil supplemented with TBB - immobilized R -B (TBB + R -B). R -B vitality was more closely related to BET surface area, total pore volume, and functional groups of tea-based biochar (TBB: PL-BC and HT-BC). R -B was able to maintain high oxidase activity. R -B and TBB + R -B can increase the activities of urease and peroxidase in vegetable soil playing an essential role in the biotransformation of ammonium nitrogen (NH 4 + -N) and nitrate nitrogen (NO 3 − -N). TBB was able to simultaneously increase the content of NO 3 − -N and NH 4 + -N, and TBB + R -B also significantly increased NO 3 − -N content but decreased NH 4 + -N content in a fertilized vegetable soil. These results indicated that R -B promoted nitrification in the soil, i.e. conversion of NH 4 + -N into NO 3 − -N, by enhancing the activities of urease and peroxidase. R -B had high adsorption capacity for cadmium (Cd) and chromium (Cr) (Cd&Cr: Cd and Cr). Moreover, TBB + R -B was able to convert weak acid extractable and reducible Cd&Cr into a more stable residual fraction and oxidizable Cd&Cr. The overall effect of the treatments was to reduce plant uptake of Cd&Cr by cabbage. TBB + R -B significantly promoted R -B growth, changed inorganic nitrogen speciation, increased NO 3 − -N supply, reduced Cd&Cr bioavailability, and decreased plant tissue Cd&Cr content.

Foliar fertilization acts as a ubiquitous component of conventional crop production, which brings considerable economic and ecological costs. Due to droplets rebounding and splashing during spraying and rain erosion, low bioavailability of fertilizer results in severe environmental pollution. Contrary to conventional fertilizer formulations with polymers, surfactants, and organic reagents, a method of improving fertilizer bioavailability based on a biocompatible protein coating is presented herein. In this system, whey protein concentrate (WPC) can undergo amyloid-like aggregation after the reduction of its disulfide bond by the reducing agent tris(2-carboxyethyl) phosphine (TCEP). Such aggregation affords a fast formation of the optically transparent and colorless phase-transitioned WPC (PTW) coating at the solid/water interface, with robust interfacial adhesion stability. Upon packaging with fertilizers through electrostatic and hydrogen-bonding interactions, such reliable interfacial adhesion thereby facilitates the effective deposition of fertilizers on superhydrophobic and hydrophobic leaf surfaces, with excellent adhesion stability. Based on practical farmland test, this work demonstrates that the application of PTW can significantly boost the bioavailability of fertilizers and decrease at least 30% fertilizer use in large-scale crop planting. This innovative strategy has the great potential to offer a transformative step forward in managing fertilizer contamination and overuse in future agriculture.

Purpose Phosphorus (P) fertilization methods significantly affect soil P availability, transformation, and crops yield. However, contradictory or paradoxical results are often available, and debates about this issue have never ceased so far. Therefore, the aims of this study are to explore influences of different P application methods on availability and transformation of added P in drip-irrigated system, and the responses of maize P uptake and its agronomic performances to P fertigation are also investigated. Materials and methods Here, we conducted a pot and filed experiments in drip-irrigated calcareous soil. Treatments included different P sources (phosphoric acid; polyphosphoric acid) with basal and split repeated application manners. Results and discussion Compared to the basal application, the average values of C DGT -P (P concentrations tested via diffusive gradient in thin films technique), Olsen-P, water-soluble P, and in situ P in the split repeated P application increased by 23.7%, 10.2%, 16.5%, and 34.4%, respectively (pot experiment). Furthermore, the average values of labile P (resin P and NaHCO 3 -P) and moderately labile P (NaOH-P) with the repeated P addition increased by 19.7% and 12.6%, whereas the concentrations of non-labile P lowered by 19.3%, respectively, relative to basal application treatment (pot experiment). The same trend was obtained in field experiment, implying that complete repeated P addition significantly increased P availability, reduced soil P transformation, and decreased P fixation. Therefore, a better agronomic performance of maize (P uptake, grain yield, and phosphorus use efficiency) was achieved in the complete repeated P application rather than basal application. Besides, diffusive gradient in thin film technique (DGT) was proved to be an accurate and powerful approach in testing soil available P. Conclusions Our findings elucidate that repeated delivering P through fertigation method can be recommended as an effective P application strategy in drip-irrigated field, especially in semi-arid and arid regions. The feasibility of DGT method was certified and C DGT -P could well characterize plant-accessible P.
