To efficiently remove and recycle oil spills, we construct aligned ZnO nanorod arrays on the surface of the porous stainless steel wire mesh to fabricate a porous unmanned ship (PUS) with properties of superhydrophobicity, superoleophilicity, and low drag by imitating the structure of nonwetting leg of water strider. The superhydrophobicity of the PUS is stable, which can support 16.5 cm water column with pore size of 100 μm. Water droplet can rebound without adhesion. In the process of oil/water separation, when the PUS contacts with oil, the oil is quickly pulled toward and penetrates into the PUS automatically. The superhydrophobicity and low water adhesion force of the PUS surface endow the PUS with high oil recovery capacity (above 94%) and drag-reducing property (31% at flowing velocity of 0.38m/s). In addition, the PUS has good corrosion resistance and reusability. We further investigate the wetting behavior of water and oil, oil recovery capacity, drag-reducing property, and corrosion resistance of the PUS after oil absorbed. The PUS surface changes significantly from superhydrophobic to hydrophobic after absorbing oil. However, the oil absorbed PUS possesses better drag-reducing property and corrosion resistance due to the changes of the motion state of the water droplets.

Organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) have been widely used in agricultural production. However, their potential harm to human health and the environment cannot be ignored. On-site detection of OPs in water is valuable for pollution source tracing and early warning of environmental pollution. We design an unmanned boat detection system equipped with a Raman spectrometer, which can achieve automated sampling and real-time detection of OPs in water. The unmanned boat detection system integrates automatic sampling, chemical reaction, spectral detection, and signal transmission modules. This method can specifically detect OPs in water by utilizing the inhibition effect of OPs on acetylcholinesterase activity. The minimum detection concentration is 700 nM for parathion-methyl. This method shows good anti-interference ability for other kinds of pesticides, demonstrating its applicability for rapid detection of OPs under complex water environmental conditions. Our strategy provides an efficient solution for real-time and flexible monitoring of OPs in water environments.

Hazardous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are one of the critical concerns in environmental water due to their toxicity to aquatic organisms and drinking water. Therefore, rapid detection of hazardous VOCs in environmental water is highly needed as many analytical methods are limited to on-site monitoring. In this work, we designed a novel unmanned shipborne mass spectrometer (US-MS) system for the real-time and online monitoring of hazardous VOCs in environmental water. The US-MS system consists of a miniaturized mass spectrometer, an automatic sampling device, a robust unmanned ship, and other monitoring and control devices. Along with the navigation route of the US-MS system, environmental water was continuously introduced into the MS system for the online and real-time detection of hazardous VOCs via a liquid/gas exchange membrane. Analytical performances of the US-MS system were investigated by a mixture of 10 VOCs showing low limits of detection (LODs: 0.31–1.26 ng/mL), good reproducibility (RSDs: 2.93–11.03%, n = 7), and excellent quantitative ability (R2 > 0.99). Furthermore, on-site detection and online monitoring of hazardous volatile contaminants such as benzene, chloroprene, and toluene in different aquatic environments such as rivers and lakes were successfully demonstrated, showing excellent field applicability of the US-MS system. Overall, the newly developed US-MS system could perform on-site, online, and real-time monitoring of complex VOCs in environmental water, showing good performances and versatile applications in water analysis.

Hydrovoltaic electricity generators (HEGs), powered by ubiquitous water evaporation, are emerging due to their high spontaneity and continuity. However, the current performance of most HEGs is restricted to 50.00 μA cm−2, far from commercial applications. Herein, we propose an ion-engine HEG by establishing a concentration gradient of an ionisation group in hydrogels along the direction of ion migration. The distinctively designed ion gradient acts as an engine to accelerate ion migration by enhancing diffusion, hence increasing the generated current. Notably, the ion-engine HEG generates a record-breaking current density of 466.75 μA cm−2, 10 to 100 times higher than those of previously reported HEGs. The ion-engine HEG possesses the lowest internal resistance, which is the closest to that of commercial products. In addition, the high transparency, flexibility, and customisability of hydrogels offer HEGs a wide range of applications, such as night-time lighting, sweat monitoring, and powering small unmanned boats. These findings provide a fresh perspective on high-performance HEGs, which have great potential to serve energy technology and intelligent life.
