Bias-free driven ion assisted photoelectrochemical system for sustainable wastewater treatment

Dang Qi,Zhang Wei,Liu Jiqing,Wang Liting,Wu Deli,Wang Dejin,Lei Zhendong,Tang Liang

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) systems have emerged as a prominent renewable energy-based technology for wastewater treatment, offering sustainable advantages such as eliminating dependence on fossil fuels or grid electricity compared to traditional electrochemical treatment methods. However, previous PEC systems often overlook the potential of ions present in wastewater as an alternative to externally applied bias voltage for enhancing carrier separation efficiency. Here we report a bias-free driven ion assisted photoelectrochemical (IAPEC) system by integration of an electron-ion acceptor cathode, which leverages its fast ion-electron coupling capability to significantly enhance the separation of electrons and holes at the photoanode. We demonstrate that Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) can serve as robust and reversible electron-ion acceptors that provide reaction sites for photoelectron coupling cations, thus driving the hole oxidation to produce strong oxidant free radicals at photoanode. Our IAPEC system exhibits superior degradation performance in wastewater containing chloride medium. This indicates that, in addition to the cations (e.g., Na + ) accelerating the electron transfer rate, the presence of Cl – ions further enhance efficient and sustainable wastewater treatment. This work highlights the potential of utilizing abundant sodium chloride in seawater as a cost-effective additive for wastewater treatment, offering crucial insights into the use of local materials for effective, low-carbon, and sustainable treatment processes.

Ni-Epoxy/Ni Multifunctional Layer Integrated Perovskite-Based Photoanode with High Electric Field

Jize Wang,Ping Mu,Xiongzhuang Jiang,Shaowen cao,Bin Li,Yong Peng

In this study, we present a transparent perovskite-based photoanode consisting of a CsPbBr3-based photogenerated electric field layer and a Ni-Epoxy/Ni layer with integrated multifunctions of light transmission, sealing, charge conducting, and catalyzing. The Ni-Epoxy/Ni layer successfully constructed longitudinal charge transport channels and provided an interface with active sites, while achieving an average visible transmittance of more than 70%. For photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation at 1.23 VRHE in 0.5 M KOH solution, the maximum photocurrent densities of the photoanode were 17.28 and 5.19 mA cm–2 when light was excited from the FTO and the multifunctional layer side, respectively, based on an actual working area of 2 cm2. The photoanode exhibited a 1450 mV shift of onset potential compared with the multifunctional layer. Due to the existence of a high built-in electric field, bias-free complete PEC water splitting was realized, and the peak photocurrent density was 0.46 mA cm–2. The multifunctional layer’s water resistance increased the photoanode’s working time from less than 1 min to more than 30 min.

Multiwavelength-Responsive Plasticity in a Bias-Free Perovskite Synaptic Device for Neuromorphic Vision

Juan Gao,Qin Gao,Jiangshun Huang,Xueli Geng,Pengzhan Li,Yihang Liu,Qiaofeng Yang,Hao Zhang,Mei Wang,Zhisong Xiao,Paul K. Chu,Ruifeng Lu,Anping Huang

Low-power and color-sensitive neuromorphic vision systems are critical to the next generation of intelligent devices. Here, we report a coral-inspired, lead-free synaptic device based on Cs3Bi2Br9 perovskite nanocrystals prepared by centrifugal casting into a porous thin film. The device exhibits wavelength-dependent plasticity under 405, 520, and 635 nm illumination without an external bias. By modulating the light wavelength and intensity, short-term and long-term synaptic plasticity are achieved to mimic excitatory, inhibitory, and saturating biological responses. Structural and spectroscopic analyses reveal that bromine vacancies play a key role in the dynamic modulation of carrier transport and plasticity evolution. The efficient preprocessing of RGB visual information significantly enhances recognition accuracy in artificial neural network devices. This wavelength-specific modulation of synaptic plasticity, a novel approach for color image preprocessing and recognition, is very promising for the advancement of neuromorphic systems.
