High-efficiency oil-water separation and passive radiant cooling performance of nano-ZnO- embedded dust-free paper

Hengyang Zhang,Miao Yu,Yang Du,Liang Xu,Deping Ma,Qun Wang

Developing a flexible nano-composite material which is not only impermeable to low-polar oil, but also has the ability of daytime radiation cooling, remains a huge challenge for both academia and industry. By modifying the fiber network of the dust-free paper using nano-ZnO particles (ZnO-DF), we strategically designed and demonstrated dual capabilities of superhydrophilicity/superoleophobicity and daytime radiant cooling for the flexible cellulose nano-composite simultaneously. A superior surface with superhydrophilic/superoleophobic (oil contact angle up to 159° and water contact angle down to 0°) was attained by regulation of surface energy components and roughness. Furthermore, the materials revealed outstanding corrosion and mechanical damage resistance, 152,788 L m −2  h −1 high permeation flux and >99.2% continuous and efficient oil-water separation performance. In addition, a cooling effect of about 5.6 °C of ZnO-DF paper could be achieved by cooperative function of both radiative cooling and sweat evaporation. It is expected that the ZnO-DF paper is promising for the thermal management of wearable products integrated with passive radiant cooling, phase change cooling (e.g., sweat evaporation) and large-scale industrial oil-water separation.

Role of electrodes in study of hydrovoltaic effects

Zheng Chunxiao,Fang Sunmiao,Chu Weicun,Tan Jin,Tian Bingkun,Jiang Xiaofeng,Guo Wanlin

The last decade has witnessed the emergence of hydrovoltaic technology, which can harvest electricity from different forms of water movement, such as raindrops, waves, flows, moisture, and natural evaporation. In particular, the evaporation-induced hydrovoltaic effect received great attention since its discovery in 2017 due to its negative heat emission property. Nevertheless, the influence of electrode reactions in evaporation-induced power generation is not negligible due to the chemical reaction between active metal electrodes and water, which leads to “exceptional” power generation. Herein, we designed a series of experiments based on air-laid paper devices with electrodes of different activities as the top and bottom electrodes. To verify the contribution of electrodes, we compared the output performance of different electrode combinations when the device was partially-wetted and fully-wetted. The device hydrophilicity, salt concentration, and acidity or basicity of solutions were also comprehensively investigated. It is demonstrated that the chemical reaction of active metals (Zn, Cu, Ag, etc.) with different aqueous solutions can generate considerable electrical energy and significantly distort the device performance, especially for Zn electrodes with an output voltage from ~ 1.26 to ~ 1.52 V and current from ~ 1.24 to ~ 75.69 µA. To promote the long-term development of hydrovoltaic technology, we recommend use of inert electrodes in hydrovoltaic studies, such as Au and Pt, especially in water and moisture environment.

Salt-tolerant, scalable Janus fabric evaporators for desalination and multi-species wastewater purification

Zhi-Jie Zhang,Zhi-Bo Zhang,Jun Zeng,Shan Ma,Min Chen,Dan Zhou,Yong Yan,Zhi Chen,Cong-Ming Tang,Jun-Qiang Xu

Solar steam generation is a sustainable technology for efficient seawater desalination and wastewater purification. In this study, SA/PPy/C@CF Janus photothermal fabrics were obtained by loading carbonized corncob powder (C) onto hydrophilic cotton fabric (CF), polymerizing polypyrrole (PPy) in situ, and then spraying hydrophobic stearic acid (SA) on one side. The modification with the C powder gives the fabrics excellent broadband light absorption (∼96.84%), while the adhesion of PPy reduces carbon particle shedding and improves photothermal performance. This is combined with super-hydrophilic air-laid paper and polystyrene (PS) foam insulation to achieve suitable water transport and thermal positioning. The evaporator achieved an evaporation rate and solar energy conversion efficiency of 1.83 kg m−2 h−1 and 80.16%, respectively, under 1 sun, with similar results obtained when replacing the carbonized corncob with other biomass charcoal. The special Janus structure of the evaporator achieved high efficiency in desalination and prevented salt accumulation when applied to both indoor and outdoor desalination experiments. Additionally, the evaporator has shown excellent purification of dyes, heavy metal wastewater, and a variety of oil-in-water emulsions. This study provides new insights into the design of a multifunctional solar steam generator that is salt-tolerant and scalable, has excellent mechanical properties, and is easy to produce on a large scale.
