Methylmercury (MeHg), derived via inorganic mercury (Hg(II)) methylation by anaerobic microorganisms , is a neurotoxic contaminant causing concern worldwide. Establishing how to reduce Hg(II) methylation and MeHg bioavailability is essential for effective control of Hg pollution. Iron sulfide nanoparticles (FeS NP ) is a promising passivator for Hg(II) methylation. However, its effect on the fate of MeHg in aquatic systems remains poorly understood. This study investigated the effect of FeS NP on Hg(II) bioavailability, MeHg production and bioavailability in aquatic environments. Results demonstrated that FeS NP rapidly sorbed Hg(II) and MeHg, with sorption affected by pH, chloride ion and dissolved organic matter . Hg-specific biosensor analysis showed that Hg(II) sorbed onto FeS NP significantly reduced its bioavailability to microorganisms. Double stable isotope ( 199 Hg(II) and Me 201 Hg) addition revealed that FeS NP significantly inhibited MeHg production in anaerobic sediments . Furthermore, synthetic gut juice extraction suggested that FeS NP decrease concentrations of bioavailable MeHg and Hg(II), reducing their integration into food webs. However, the sorbed MeHg and Hg(II) in sediments can be released after FeS NP oxidation , potentially enhancing the risk of exposure to aquatic organisms. Overall, these findings increase our understanding of Hg transformation and exposure risks in aquatic systems, providing valuable information for the development of in situ Hg remediation systems.

Background due to the toxicity and widespread distribution of inorganic mercury ions (Hg 2+ ), it is a crucial task for researchers to develop simple methods for field analysis of water samples for trace Hg 2+ . Result a colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent dual-mode assay based on bifunctional UiO–(COOH) 2 –NH 2 /Eu and gold nanocomplexes (AuNPs@UiO–(COOH) 2 –NH 2 /Eu) was constructed for the sensitive, selective and potentially on-site determination of Hg 2+ . The incorporation of Hg 2+ resulted in the formation of gold amalgam, which enhanced peroxidase-like activity of AuNPs@UiO–(COOH) 2 –NH 2 /Eu, accelerating the oxidization of zymolyte 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). Concurrently, the color of the reaction solution turned blue, and the RGB (red, green, and blue) of the solution color changed accordingly. The fluorescence at 618 nm was almost unchanged with the increase of Hg 2+ concentration, whereas the fluorescence at 460 nm was obviously quenched due to the inner filter effect (IFE). Under UV irradiation, the fluorescence emission of the sensing system changed from blue to red, enabling easy visual detection. The probe showed great linearity over a wide range of 20–1200 nM (colorimetric) and 50–4000 nM (fluorescent), with limits of detection (LODs) of 8 nM and 3 nM, respectively. Significance the proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of trace Hg 2+ in tap water and groundwater, while the use of a smartphone enables its simplicity and portability. The results show that the colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent dual-mode method based on AuNPs@UiO–(COOH) 2 –NH 2 /Eu can achieve rapid visual determination of Hg 2+ potentially useful for on-site analysis.

A novel magnetic metal-organic frameworks (Fe 3 O 4 @UiO-66-SH) was successfully prepared by coating Fe 3 O 4 nanospheres with sulfur-functionalized UiO-66. The Fe 3 O 4 @UiO-66-SH possesses both the magnetic properties of Fe 3 O 4 and the diverse properties of metal-organic framework (MOF) in one material, which has the superiority of high surface area, easy-operation and strong adsorb ability with mercury, is used for the magnetic solid-phase extraction of methylmercury (MeHg + ) and inorganic mercury (Hg 2+ ) in water and fish samples. The analyzes were conducted by high performance liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS). The different pretreatment conditions influencing the extraction recoveries of Hg 2+ and MeHg + , including adsorbent amount, pH, extraction time, elution solvent, elution volume, desorption time, co-existing ions and dissolved organic materials were investigated. Under the optimized conditions, the limits of detection (LODs) of Hg 2+ and MeHg + for water samples were 1.4 and 2.6 ng L −1 , and the limits of quantification (LOQs) of Hg 2+ and MeHg + for water samples were 4.7 and 8.7 ng L −1 . The enrichment factors (EFs) were 45.7 and 47.6 fold for Hg 2+ and MeHg + , respectively. The accuracy of the proposed method was demonstrated by analyzing the certified reference material of fish tissue (GBW10029) and by determining the analyte content in spiked water and fish samples. The determined values were in good agreement with the certified values and the recoveries for the spiked samples were in the range of 84.5–96.8%.

Dietary exposure to methylmercury (MeHg) causes irreversible damage to human cognition and is mitigated by photolysis and microbial demethylation of MeHg. Rice ( Oryza sativa L.) has been identified as a major dietary source of MeHg. However, it remains unknown what drives the process within plants for MeHg to make its way from soils to rice and the subsequent human dietary exposure to Hg. Here we report a hidden pathway of MeHg demethylation independent of light and microorganisms in rice plants. This natural pathway is driven by reactive oxygen species generated in vivo, rapidly transforming MeHg to inorganic Hg and then eliminating Hg from plants as gaseous Hg°. MeHg concentrations in rice grains would increase by 2.4- to 4.7-fold without this pathway, which equates to intelligence quotient losses of 0.01–0.51 points per newborn in major rice-consuming countries, corresponding to annual economic losses of US$30.7–84.2 billion globally. This discovered pathway effectively removes Hg from human food webs, playing an important role in exposure mitigation and global Hg cycling.

Inorganic mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) have emerged as global pollutants owing to their long-term environmental stability and bioaccumulation. These heavy metals enter aquatic systems via industrial emissions, coal combustion, and natural processes, posing a serious threat to ecosystems and human health. This study assesses the impact of Hg2+ and MeHg on the growth and development of brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana) nauplii by analyzing the histopathological effects on their tissues. Brine shrimp nauplii from the Bohai Bay in China were selected as the study subjects and exposed to 1 μmol/L solutions of HgCl₂ and MeHgCl. Tissue sections were continuously taken at different immersion times. After staining with the standard hematoxylin-eosin (HE) method, the tissue morphology of brine shrimp nauplii under different forms of Hg stress was observed under a light microscope. The results showed that MeHg exhibited significantly greater toxicity to brine shrimp nauplii than Hg2+. Under the same exposure time, the MeHg group exhibited more pronounced epithelial cell damage, nuclear material disorder, and nucleoplasm diffusion outside the nucleus than the HgCl₂ group. This finding provides an important theoretical support for further research into the toxicological mechanisms of MeHg and Hg2+, and highlights that the toxic effects of methylmercury on aquatic organisms.

Zinc oxide nanofluid (ZnO-NF) based vortex assisted liquid liquid microextraction (ZnO-NF VA-LLME) was developed and employed in extraction of inorganic mercury (Hg 2+ ) in environmental water samples, followed by cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrometry (CV-AFS). Unlike other dispersive liquid liquid microextraction techniques, ZnO-NF VA-LLME is free of volatile organic solvents and dispersive solvent consumption. Analytical signals were obtained without back-extraction from the ZnO-NF phase prior to CV-AFS determination. Some essential parameters of the ZnO-NF VA-LLME and cold vapor generation such as composition and volume of the nanofluid, vortexing time, pH of the sample solution, amount of the chelating agent, ionic strength and matrix interferences have been studied. Under optimal conditions, efficient extraction of 1 ng/mL of Hg 2+ in 10 mL of sample solution was achieved using 50 μL of ZnO-NF. The enrichment factor before dilution, detection limits and limits of quantification of the method were about 190, 0.019 and 0.064 ng/mL, respectively. The intra and inter days relative standard deviations (n=8) were found to be 4.6% and 7.8%, respectively, at 1 ng/mL spiking level. The accuracy of the current method was also evaluated by the analysis of certified reference materials, and the measured Hg 2+ concentration of GBW08603 (9.6 ng/mL) and GBW(E)080392 (8.9 ng/mL) agreed well with their certified value (10 ng/mL). The method was applied to the analysis of Hg 2+ in effluent, influent, lake and river water samples, with recoveries in the range of 79.8–92.8% and 83.6–106.1% at 1 ng/mL and 5 ng/mL spiking levels, respectively. Overall, ZnO-NF VA-LLME is fast, simple, cost-effective and environmentally friendly and it can be employed for efficient enrichment of the analyte from various water samples.

Zwitterion-functionalized polymer microspheres (ZPMs) have been designed and used as the core adsorbent for the selective and rapid enrichment of mercury species in environmental waters by an on-line solid-phase extraction (SPE). Zwitterionic S-ZPMs and N-ZPMs having an anionic sulfonic group, but differing in cationic S + and N + moieties were prepared from Merrifield resin by treating with 1,2-ethanedithiol and imidazole , followed by modification with 1,3-propanesultone. Without any additional reagents, inorganic mercury (In-Hg), methylmercury (MeHg) and ethylmercury (EtHg) were quantitatively adsorbed on the home-made mini-column packed with ZPMs. Following extraction with 60 mM ammonium acetate and 0.15% L -cysteine ( L -Cys) solution within seconds, separation and speciation of mercury were successfully achieved by the HPLC–ICP-MS technique. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the enrichment factors (EFs) are up to 105 and 98 for inorganic and organic mercury only with 40 mL sample solution, respectively. The low detection limits of 0.78 ng L −1 , 0.63 ng L −1 , and 0.49 ng L −1 were reached for In-Hg, MeHg and EtHg, respectively, with the relative standard deviations (RSDs) below 4.1%. The feasibility and accuracy of the on-line SPE–HPLC–ICP-MS method were successfully applied for mercury speciation in surface water, seawater as well as certified reference material (CRM). The results here demonstrate a facile, sensitive and selective method for speciation of mercury at trace levels.

Mercury (Hg) is one of the chemicals that bring serious adverse effects to the environment and human beings. Methylmercury (MeHg) is a neurotoxin while inorganic Hg (IHg) is not. Early screening of the neurotoxicity of chemicals may help reduce the occurrence of neurological disorders by minimizing chemical exposure. This work proposed the combined application of gut microbiome, metabolomics and metallomics to differentiate the neurotoxicity between MeHg and IHg in rats. It was found that MeHg caused down-regulated Bacteroides , Firmicutes and Proteobacteria , and up-regulated Actinobacteria and Verrucomicrobia at phylum level, while MeHg caused up-regulated Verrucomicrobiaceae , Desulfovibrionaceae , Helicobacteraceae , Lachnospiraceae and down-regulated Rikenellaceae , Erysipelotrichaceae , Sutterellaceae , Anaeroplasmataceae and Coriobacteriaceae in feces than IHg did at family level; Besides, MeHg brought metabolites change in activation of gut-brain axis pathway than IHg did, such as Glutamate, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), Dopamine (DA) and Tryptophan. These differences between MeHg and IHg were further confirmed by the distribution of Hg in the intestine, as well as the level of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the intestine, brain and serum. Therefore, the difference of toxicity between MeHg and IHg can be well distinguished through feces after exposure for only 24 h, which may be used for the screening of neurotoxicity of other chemicals.
