Because of the prevailing issue of water scarcity , the application of non-aqueous media Decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) was employed in the chemical fiber dyeing and washing process. Confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis have been carried out to analyze the penetration of D5 into the interior of nylon fiber and its distribution in fiber cross-section. The solubility of pure disperse dye in D5 has been measured to check the feasibility of dispersing agent exclusion from dyeing formulation. For developing the solvent dyeing and washing process for nylon, nylon fabric was dyed with pure disperse dyes in D5 solvent and washed with D5 without any process auxiliaries. Findings from CLSM and XPS spectrum showed that D5 can diffuse into the nylon fabric surface with and without the addition of accelerant. And accelerant doesn’t affect D5’s ability to penetrate and uniform distribution within the fiber structure. As compared to aqueous dyeing, the 30 and 43 percent increase in K/S was achieved for azo and anthraquinone dyes by using D5 as dyeing media. Furthermore, more than 99 percent solvent can be recycled or recovered. The level dyeing with commercial dyes under conventional dyeing conditions in D5 solvent dyeing media prove the commercial feasibility of this dyeing technology .

With the increase in environmental protection awareness, the development of strategies to reduce effluent and lower the cost of the chemical reagents used in the textile wetting process has attracted wide attention. Wool is a representative natural protein fiber with good warmth retention and durability. However, owing to the presence of a dense and chemically inert scale layer on the surface, woolen fabric has poor dye absorption ability, and the wool dyeing process is generally accomplished under the conditions of high dye concentration, salt and an appropriate boiling temperature. Therefore, the development of a novel dyeing approach is important to overcome these limitations to some extent. In this study, a new water-free recyclable dyeing process that uses natural and an acidic deep eutectic solvent as the water-free medium was established for dyeing woolen fabric. The process could be completed by using only the dye and the deep eutectic solvent without other assistant reagents. The wool samples dyed in the acidic deep eutectic solvents had higher color strength (K/S value), similar colorfastness, satisfactory leveling properties, and acceptable mechanical behavior compared with those dyed using the conventional aqueous method. The deep eutectic solvent also could be used as a cleaning solvent to remove the excess dye adhering to the fabric surface after the dyeing process, and the dye-containing solvent could be reused at least 10 times. Thus, the cost, chemical reagent consumption, and waste production of the developed dyeing process were low. Several dyes and acidic hydrogen-bonding ligands of deep eutectic solvents were successfully applied to dyeing wool using this deep eutectic solvent dyeing method. This favorable result indicates that this method has satisfactory universality and the potential for industrial application. Together, the results indicate that this method meets the 3R principles of reducing waste, recycling resources and reusing. This investigation broadens the application field of deep eutectic solvents in the textile industry and can contribute to the further development of green approaches for textile dyeing and finishing.

Clean dyeing technologies for polyester textiles, particularly waterless dyeing, have been studied extensively in recent decades. In the present work, a new waterless dyeing technology, the silicone medium dyeing, for polyester textiles had been investigated. The dyeing process of polyester textile in the silicone medium was optimized by determining the dyeing temperature, holding time, type and dosage of dye accelerator. The dye uptake of disperse dye and the fastness properties of the dyed polyester were equivalent to those of conventional water-bathed dyeing. After dyeing, polyester textile had a better color levelness. From the TGA and XRD results, it can be proved that silicone medium has no adverse effects on the fiber and can be used as a dyeing medium. The influence of the increase of halogen in the diazotized component on the affinity, dye uptake, diffusion coefficient , and other parameters was obtained by analyzing the dye uptake of C.I. Disperse Orange 44 and C.I. Disperse Yellow 163. These parameters formulate guidelines for the selection of disperse dyes for silicone medium dyeing system. To verify the feasibility of industrialization, pilot-scale dyeing was carried out. The results showed that, as compared to aqueous dyeing, higher colorfastness and better color levelness were obtained from silicone media. Therefore, this eco-friendly dyeing technology has considerable potential to become a mainstream dyeing method in the foreseeable future.

In the realm of environmental protection and sustainable development, polylactic acid (PLA) materials have garnered significant attention due to their biodegradability. Moreover, PLA is more widely used in the clothing and home textile industries. However, the application of PLA in the textile industry is constrained by hydrolysis issues during conventional aqueous dyeing processes. This paper investigates a waterless dyeing technique utilizing linear silicone (LS) as a nonaqueous dyeing medium. Because PLA fibers are dyed in a nonaqueous environment, the breaking strength of PLA fabrics in the LS waterless dyeing system increased by 4% to 10%, and the breaking elongation improved by 7% to 20% at dyeing temperatures of 110 and 120 °C. However, it showed a reduction of 23.4% at 120 °C in water-bathed dyeing. The LS waterless dyeing system facilitates high-temperature dyeing of PLA fibers, ensuring that the fibers remain intact at temperatures below 140 °C. In contrast, when subjected to traditional water bath dyeing at 120 °C, the fibers exhibit significant breakage. The hydrolysis concerns are mitigated in the LS waterless dyeing bath, resulting in enhanced thermal stability and mechanical properties compared to that in fibers dyed in a conventional water-bathed dyeing system. At equivalent temperatures, the K/S value of dyed PLA fabric can be improved when a small dosage of acetic acid is employed in a waterless dyeing bath, while color fastness to washing, rubbing, and light remain uninfluenced. The selected dyeing medium can be recycled and reused, which not only significantly improves the resource utilization efficiency of the dyeing process but also effectively reduces the generation and emission of waste. This study provides a promising approach for waterless dyeing of PLA fiber, facilitating their practical application and marking an important milestone toward sustainability in the textile industry.

The coloration textile in supercritical carbon dioxide with water free has become more and more important and meaningful recently due to its Ecofriendly and environmentally friendly advantages. However, the lacks of special dyes for this waterless coloration technology are limiting its application in industry, especially for the shortage of disperse reactive dyes for natural fibers . Therefore, in this work, three special disperse reactive dyes involving diazo parent structures and reactive groups of dichlorotriazine were successfully synthesized and then applied at the first time for waterless coloration of wool fabric with supercritical carbon dioxide. Moreover, a safer and Ecofriendly method was developed for synthesis of the disperse reactive dyes by diazotizing of the alkalescent arylamine of 2-chloro-4-nitroaniline in the presence of a safer and milder acid of hydrochloric acid rather than concentrated sulfuric acid , in an environmentally friendly media of polyethylene glycol 200 mixed with water. The obtained dyes were successfully characterized and confirmed from chemical structure and color characteristics by Fourier transform infrared spectra , nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen spectroscopy, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and ultraviolet–visible absorption spectroscopy . Furthermore, the application results reveal that good coloration behaviors and characteristics, commercially satisfactory leveling property and color fastness were achieved with the synthesized disperse reactive dyes on wool fabric in supercritical carbon dioxide media. All results indicate that the supposed method is essentially useful for developing special disperse reactive dyes with safe and Ecofriendly characteristics, and the obtained disperse reactive dyes are potentially hopeful for waterless coloration of wool with supercritical carbon dioxide media instead of conventional wet-chemical processes for cleaner production in wool industry.

Traditional water medium dyeing of polyester-cotton fabrics consumes more water and energy, and causes serious environmental pollution in comparison with one-bath dyeing of single component fiber. To achieve sustainable dyeing of polyester-cotton blends, three reactive disperse dyes with s-triazine reactive group were synthesized, and supercritical CO 2 was used as solvent to conduct the waterless dyeing. The results showed that one-bath dyeing of polyester-cotton blends could be successfully realized with the synthesized dyes. Dyeing performance of the synthesized dyes was constantly improved with the extension of carbon chain on aniline. Compared with other two dyes, the optimal color strength of polyester-cotton blends was obtained with dye 3 using dimethylsulfoxide as co-solvent, and K/S values up to 6.4 were obtained at 100 °C, 20 MPa and 120 min with a dimethylsulfoxide concentration of 80 %. σ K/S values below 0.14 and washing and rubbing fastness above 4 were displayed for the colored samples. In addition, dyeing mechanism of polyester-cotton fabrics with the synthesized dyes was discussed combined with FT-IR measurement and stripping experiments.

Supercritical carbon dioxide, ethanol, and dimethyl sulfoxide mixed medium enable cotton fabric anhydrous dyeing, reducing energy consumption, simplifying color matching, improving levelness and color depth, and enabling an expanded range of available reactive dyes. However, residual alkalis, ammonium carbamate, and unfixed reactive dyes remain on cotton fabric, necessitating further treatment to satisfy the requirements for ecological textiles. This study used and recycled ethanol and dimethyl sulfoxide to effectively eliminate residual alkalis, ammonium carbamate, and unfixed reactive dyes from dyed cotton fabric and achieved the automation renovation of the corresponding anhydrous dyeing system to minimize waste discharge. The results show that residual alkalis and ammonium carbamate could be eliminated by washing with an ethanol solution containing citric acid, and the unfixed reactive dyes could be eliminated by washing with dimethyl sulfoxide. After being washed with ethanol and dimethyl sulfoxide, the dyed cotton fabric exhibits a grade 4 washing and rubbing fastness or higher and a pH value of 7, satisfying requirements for ecological textiles. The renovated automatic anhydrous dyeing system could achieve an E factor of 0.037, while its theoretical energy consumption of solvent recycling was 0, according to the Green Chemistry Principles 1 (prevention) and 6 (design for energy efficiency). It indicates that the automatic anhydrous dyeing system aligns more closely with the requirements outlined in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12 (responsible production and consumption) than previously published dyeing systems.
