Based on the demand for flexible human–machine interaction devices, it is urgent to develop high-performance stretchable ionic conductive materials. However, most gel-based ionic conductive materials are composed of crosslinked polymer networks that contain liquids, and suffer from limitations of solvent volatilization and leakage, and the cross-linking restricts the movement and diffusion of polymer chains, making it difficult for them to achieve adhesion. Here, we introduce flexible and adhesive liquid-free ionic conductive elastomers (ICE) with salt using a non-crosslinked polymer strategy. The ICE show a transparency of 89.5%, Tg of −51.2 °C, negligible weight loss at 200 °C, a tensile fracture strain of 289.5%, and an initial modulus of 45.7 kPa, and is adhesive to various solid surfaces with an interfacial toughness of 11.4 to 41.4 J m−2. Moreover, the ICE exhibit stable electrical conductivity under ambient conditions. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) were assembled on an electrical shell surface with the adhesive ICE as an electrostatic induction layer and were displayed for use as human–machine interactive keyboards. This approach opens a route to making adhesive and stable polymer ionic conductors for human–machine interaction.

Graphical A liquid-free polyurethane type ionic conductive elastomer (ICE) was prepared in a facile manner. The mechanical robust, transparent ICE with self-healing ability proved its advantages in strain and temperature sensing. The recycling and remolding process did not deteriorate the sensing properties Solid-state ionic conductive elastomers (ICEs) can fundamentally overcome the disadvantages of hydrogels and ionogels (their liquid components tend to leak or evaporate), and are considered to be ideal materials for flexible ionic sensors. In this study, a liquid-free ionic polyurethane (PU) type conductive elastomer (ICE-2) was synthesized and studied. The PU type matrix with microphase separation endowed ICE-2 with excellent mechanical versatility. The disulfide bond exchange reaction in the hard phase and intermolecular hydrogen bonds contributed to damage repairing ability. ICE-2 exhibited good ionic conductivity (2.86×10 −6 S/cm), high transparency (average transmittance >89 %, 400~800 nm), excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength of 3.06 MPa, elongation at break of 1760 %, and fracture energy of 14.98 kJ/m 2 ), appreciable self-healing ability (healing efficiency >90 %), satisfactory environmental stability, and outstanding recyclability. The sensor constructed by ICE-2 could not only realize the perception of temperature changes, but also accurately and sensitively detect various human activities, including joint movements and micro-expression changes. This study provides a simple and effective strategy for the development of flexible and soft ionic conductors for sensors and human-machine interfaces.

Polymerizable deep eutectic solvent (PDES) as a newly emerging type of liquid-free ionic conductive elastomer is considered to be the most attractive candidate for the next generation of ionotronic devices. However, it remains a huge challenge to integrate high ionic conductivity, excellent mechanical properties, good self-healing capacity, and robust adhesion into a single material that satisfies the stringent demand of the ionotronic devices in various scenarios. Herein, a liquid-free ionic elastomer is constructed by incorporating tannic acid-encapsulated cellulose nanocrystals (TA@CNC) as multifunctional hydrogen bond donors (HBDs) along with poly(acrylic acid) (HBDs) and choline chloride (hydrogen bond acceptors, HBAs) to form a dynamic cross-linking network through multiple dynamic hydrogen bonds. The presence of the rigid crystalline regions and the sufficient dynamic interaction sites on the TA@CNC endow the resultant elastomers (ACTC) with superior mechanical properties (≈496 kPa, 2400%), robust adhesion (≈68.6 kPa), and good self-healing property. Benefiting from the above integrated features, the wearable sensors by harnessing the ACTC as a resistance sensing module is constructed that provide unaltered sensing performance under off-axial deformation (twisting and prick). Additionally, the capacitance pressure sensor with good stability for force distribution is developed, opening up a new avenue for the development of ionotronic devices.

Liquid-free ionic conductive elastomers (ICEs) are used in flexible electronic components because they solve liquid leakage and evaporation problems. In everyday use, we often need high mechanical strength and rapid self-healing performance. Here, we report the development of liquid-free ICEs with high mechanical properties (>1 MPa) and rapid healable ability using rationally designed polymerizable deep eutectic solvents (PDESs). 2-Acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) has been introduced as a hard monomer in PDES systems, because the AMPS monomer contains the sulfonic acid group with strong hydrogen bond interaction. Through a rapid UV curing process, PDES comonomers can be rapidly polymerized into high performance ICEs in the presence of a photoinitiator. Due to the strong hydrogen-bonding interactions and entanglements between soft and hard chains among the components, the prepared ICEs show rapid healable properties (healing efficiency up to 86.5% in 4 h) while maintaining high mechanical strength (tensile stress up to 5.7 MPa). In addition, the ICEs also have high transparency (average light transmittance up to 92%), good ionic conductivity (0.2–0.7 × 10–2 S/m), and rapid electrical self-healing properties (within 2 s) in the absence of external stimulation. On the basis of their excellent versatility, they can be used as strain sensors to detect human motion. We believe that the study of PDES-based ICEs will provide a method for the development of flexible electronics.

For a long time, the potential application of gel-based ionic devices was limited by the problem of liquid leakage or evaporation. Here, we utilized amorphous, irreversible and reversible cross-linked polyTA (PTA) as a matrix and lithium bis(trifluoromethane sulfonamide) (LiTFSI) as an electrolyte to prepare a stretchable (495%) and self-healing (94%) solvent-free elastomeric ionic conductor. The liquid-free ionic elastomer can be used as a stable strain sensor to monitor human activities sensitively under extreme temperatures. Moreover, the prepared elastic conductor (TEOA0.10-PTA@LiTFSI) was also considered an electrode to assemble with self-designed repairable dielectric organosilicon layers (RD-PDMS) to develop a sustainable triboelectric nanogenerator (SU-TENG) with outstanding performance. SU-TENG maintained good working ability under extreme conditions (−20 °C, 60 °C, and 200% strain). This work provided a low-cost and simple idea for the development of reliable iontronic equipment for human–computer interaction, motion sensing, and sustainable energy.

Liquid-free ionic conductors (LFICs) have promising applications in flexible electronics because most ionic conductors currently suffer from ionic liquid leakage or water evaporation issues. However, it has been a formidable challenge for LFICs to achieve long-term repeated self-adhesion on different substrates, especially on soft biological tissues. Based on the double-network design concept, we first fabricate a series of repeatable self-adhesive liquid-free double-network ionic conductors (SALFDNICs), consisting of stretchable first poly(AA-ChCl)-type supramolecular deep eutectic polymer networks and stiff second polydopamine (PDA) networks, which can maintain sufficient dynamic hydrogen bonds and catechol groups in the ionic conductors by preventing the overoxidation of dopamine, thus balancing the contradiction between adhesion and cohesion in liquid-free ionic conductors. Therefore, SALFDNICs can instantly form various interface interaction forces with multiple substrates (adhesion strength up to 757 N/m) and firmly adhere to various substrates for 20 detachment-reattachment cycles with a reduction in adhesion strength of less than 15%. Furthermore, SALFDNICs also have other comprehensive properties, such as optimum self-healing properties (self-healing efficiency of 90%), good stretchability (strain at break of 1200%), and promising conductivity (2.31 × 10–2 S m–1). Therefore, we believe that the extraordinary performance of SALFDNICs is important for improving device integration and the further development of flexible electronics.
