Random urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) is highly correlated with 24-hour urine albumin, which is of great significance for the diagnosis of nephropathy, diabetes, hyperglycemia, and hypertension. In this study, we developed a battery-free, wireless, and flexible electrochemical tag for in situ quantification of urinary ACR. A flexible circuit electrochemical board is integrated with chronoamperometry (CA) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) for the detection of creatinine and albumin, respectively. Near field communication (NFC) module is applied for wireless power obtaining and data transmission. A disposable screen-printed flexible electrode array connected with the circuit board, including a non-enzymatic sensor for creatinine detection and an electrochemical immunosensor was applied for albumin detection. Within the effective working distance (1 ~ 2 cm), ACR sensing platform could be powered wirelessly by the NFC-enabled smartphone via electromagnetic coupling , performing real-time urine ACR detection and data transmission. The tag showed high consistency with clinical laboratory methods to several synthetic urine samples. This platform provides a rapid and convenient method for the detection of urinary biochemical substance, such as ACR, which has a broad prospect in mobile health and point-of-care testing (POCT).

Nutrition assessment is crucial for dietary guidance and prevention of malnutrition. Recent endeavors in wearable biochemical sensors have enabled real-time, in situ analysis of nutrients in sweat. However, the monitoring of riboflavin, an indispensable vitamin B involved in energy metabolism, remains challenging due to its trace level and variations in the sweat matrix. Herein, we report a wireless, battery-free, and flexible wearable biosensing system for the in situ monitoring of sweat riboflavin. Highly sensitive and selective electrochemical voltammetric detection is realized based on the synergistic effect of electrodeposited reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) with a low detection limit of 1.2 nM. The fully integrated system is capable of sweat sampling with the microfluidic patch, real-time riboflavin analysis and pH calibration with the flexible electrode array, as well as wirelessly simultaneous near field communication (NFC) energy harvesting and data transmission with the flexible circuit and a smartphone. On-body human sweat analysis demonstrates high accuracy cross-validated with gold-standard measurements, and reveals a strong correlation between sweat and urine riboflavin levels. The proposed wearable platform opens up attractive possibilities for noninvasive nutrient tracking, providing strong potential for personalized dietary guidance towards precision nutrition.

Approximately 4.5% to 7.0% of hospitalized patients suffer from pressure ulcers. Mitigating risks for pressure ulcers through sensors remains a challenge and a high requirement. A simple, low-cost, battery-free, multi-parameter passive wireless flexible sensor (MPWFS) for all-around pressure and temperature monitoring to prevent pressure ulcers is developed. The pressure sensing unit is fabricated with functional gradient-structured balsa wood and has high sensitivity of 0.34 kPa −1 with a wide detection range of 0–20 kPa. The temperature sensing unit, which is 0.4 mm × 0.2 mm, is embedded in the surface of the pressure sensing unit, enabling temperature monitoring with a resolution of 0.1 °C. The flexible Radio Frequency energy-harvesting unit, data acquisition, and processing, as well as Bluetooth-Low-Energy wireless transmission, are integrated within a 20 mm × 20 mm unit. It acquires continuous temperature and pressure data without a battery at any position more than 1 m away from the power transmitter. Moreover, the combination of the sensor array design with a mobile terminal provides the MPWFS's various benefits, including tracking changes in the supine posture, warning about pressure ulcers, and monitoring falls out of bed. This study presents a new method for long-term bedridden patient care.

The sophisticated environment of chronic wounds, characterized by prolonged exudation and recurrent bacterial infections, poses significant challenges to wound recovery. Recent advancements in multifunctional wound dressings fall short of providing comprehensive, accurate, and comfortable treatment. To address these issues, a battery-free and multifunctional microfluidic Janus wound dressing (MM-JWD) capable of three functions, including exudate management, antibacterial properties, and multiple indications of wound infection detection, has been developed. During the treatment, the fully soft microfluidic Janus membrane not only demonstrated stable unidirectional fluid transport capabilities under various skin deformations for a longer period but also provided antibacterial effects through surface treatment with chitosan quaternary ammonium salts and poly(vinyl alcohol). Furthermore, integrating multiple colorimetric sensors within the Janus membrane’s microchannels and a dual-layer structure enabled simultaneous monitoring of the wound’s pH, uric acid, and temperature. The monitoring was facilitated by smartphone recognition of color changes in the sensors. In vivo and in vitro tests confirmed the exudate management, antibacterial, and sensing capabilities of the MM-JWD, proving its efficacy in monitoring and promoting the healing of wounds. Overall, this study provides a valuable method for the design of multifunctional wound dressings for chronic wound care.

Accurate strain monitoring in environments with coexisting mechanical deformation and temperature fluctuations─such as solid rocket propellants, battery enclosures, and human ligaments─remains a longstanding challenge for flexible electronics. Conventional strain sensors suffer from significant thermal drift due to the intrinsic temperature dependence of their sensing materials, limiting their reliability in wireless and implantable applications. Here, we report an intrinsically temperature-insensitive, highly sensitive, wireless flexible strain sensor based on near-field communication technology. We innovatively design and demonstrate a flexible strain sensor that simultaneously achieves low temperature drift, high sensitivity, and passive wireless functionality. By combining two engineered materials with opposing temperature coefficients of resistance, the device achieves self-compensated thermal stability with a minimal temperature drift of 160 × 10–6 °C–1, eliminating the need for external calibration. It exhibits an exceptionally high gauge factor of 2415.76 across a wide strain range (0–80%), and enables wireless, battery-free strain readout over a distance of 3 cm. We demonstrate the sensor’s robust performance across three thermo-mechanically coupled scenarios: (1) strain monitoring within solid rocket motor propellant grains, (2) detection of volumetric deformation in lithium-ion batteries, and (3) ligament strain sensing in the human knee joint. This work provides a generalizable strategy for achieving thermal invariance in high-performance flexible strain sensors and expands the utility of passive wireless sensing in harsh and dynamic environments.

Cardiac pacemakers play a crucial role in arrhythmia treatment. Existing devices typically rely on rigid electrode components, leading to potential issues such as heart damage and detachment during prolonged cardiac motion due to the mechanical mismatch with cardiac tissue. Additionally, traditional pacemakers, with their batteries and percutaneous leads, introduce infection risks and limit freedom of movement. A wireless, battery-free multifunctional bioelectronic device for cardiac pacing is developed. This device integrates highly conductive (160 S m −1 ), flexible (Young's modulus of 80 kPa is similar to that of mammalian heart tissue), and stretchable (270%) soft hydrogel electrodes, providing high signal-to-noise ratio (≈28 dB) electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings and effective pacing of the beating heart. The versatile device detects physiological and biochemical signals in the cardiac environment and allows for adjustable pacing in vivo studies. Remarkably, it maintained recording and pacing capabilities 31 days post-implantation in rats. Additionally, the wireless bioelectronic device can be fully implanted in rabbits for pacing. By addressing a major shortcoming of conventional pacemakers, this device paves the way for implantable flexible bioelectronics, which offers promising opportunities for advanced cardiac therapies.

With the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT), various IoT devices have been widely used, and in recent years, the rapid development of smart sensors as wearable electronic devices has increasingly promoted human-computer integration. Traditional methods using solid-state power supplies suffer from limited battery life, high maintenance costs and environmental pollution. In this work, we propose a simple yet powerful battery-free human motion sensing system that can recognize human motion through a shoes-ground comprised natural triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), with a conductive PVA-PEDOT:PSS hydrogel as the signal collection component. In addition, we develop an artificial intelligence (AI)-based fall detection system based on the TENG. To this end, we extend TENG with a custom Bluetooth module to transmit the collected signals to the cloud and develop an anomaly detection AI algorithm to detect fall accidents during walking in real time and send instant messages for notification. We experimentally evaluate the proposed TENG fall detection system and conclude that the human sensing-based TENG system has a wide range of potential in wearable electronic devices, and also provides a viable reference for other applications related to human motion detection.

The proper axial length of the eye is crucial for achieving emmetropia. In this study, we present a wireless battery-free eye modulation patch designed to correct high myopia and prevent relapse. The patch consists of piezoelectric transducers, an electrochemical micro-actuator, a drug microneedle array, μ-LEDs, a flexible circuit, and biocompatible encapsulation. The system can be wirelessly powered and controlled using external ultrasound. The electrochemical micro-actuator plays a key role in precisely shortening the axial length by driving the posterior sclera inward. This ensures accurate scene imaging on the retina for myopia eye. The drug microneedle array delivers riboflavin to the posterior sclera, and μ-LEDs’ blue light induces collagen cross-linking, reinforcing sclera strength. In vivo experiments demonstrate that the patch successfully reduces the rabbit eye’s axial length by ~1217 μm and increases sclera strength by 387%. The system operates effectively within the body without the need for batteries. Here, we show that the patch offers a promising avenue for clinically treating high myopia.

Flexible electrochromic devices (FECDs) are promising candidates for the next generation of wearable electronics due to their low operating voltage and energy consumption. For the flexible electrochromic devices, the electrolyte is an important component. Typically, the electrolyte needs to be formulated according to the device structure and usage scenario. A high-performance electrolyte involves consideration of many factors, including choosing the right polymer, solvent, curing agent, and ion type to satisfy particular device specifications. In this work, a ultraviolet-curable solid–liquid host–guest (UV-SLHG) electrolyte is developed. Several aspects of performance are improved by introducing the solid–liquid coexisting microstructure without changing the electrolyte formulation, including excellent adhesion, a 30% increase in tensile characteristics, and a seven-fold increase in ionic conductivity when compared to a fully cured solid-state electrolyte. More importantly, the unique advantage of SLHG electrolytes lies that the thickness will not change significantly during bending. The FECD made by using the UV-SLHG-based electrolyte sustained 10,000 bending cycles at the bending radius of 2.5 mm while maintaining outstanding optical modulation. A wearable ring-type ECD and a battery-free FECD wine label were made as demonstrators. The UV-SLHG strategy is not only suitable for the FECDs but also universally applicable to other electrolyte-based of flexible electronics such as flexible capacitors and batteries.

Light therapy is an effective approach for the treatment of a variety of challenging dermatological conditions. In contrast to existing methods involving high doses and large areas of illumination, alternative strategies based on wearable designs that utilize a low light dose over an extended period provide a precise and convenient treatment. In this study, we present a battery-free, skin-integrated optoelectronic patch that incorporates a coil-powered circuit, an array of microscale violet and red light emitting diodes (LEDs), and polymer microneedles (MNs) loaded with 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA). These polymer MNs, based on the biodegradable composite materials of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and hyaluronic acid (HA), serve as light waveguides for optical access and a medium for drug release into deeper skin layers. Unlike conventional clinical photomedical appliances with a rigid and fixed light source, this flexible design allows for a conformable light source that can be applied directly to the skin. In animal models with bacterial-infected wounds, the experimental group with the combination treatment of metronomic photodynamic and light therapies reduced 2.48 log 10 CFU mL –1 in bactericidal level compared to the control group, indicating an effective anti-infective response. Furthermore, post-treatment analysis revealed the activation of proregenerative genes in monocyte and macrophage cell populations, suggesting enhanced tissue regeneration, neovascularization, and dermal recovery. Overall, this optoelectronic patch design broadens the scope for targeting deep skin lesions, and provides an alternative with the functionality of standard clinical light therapy methods.
