Aqueous reactive dyeing of cotton is considered to be environmentally unfriendly owing to its high consumption of water and salt as well as large discharge of wastewater. However, the industrial applications of current alternative dyeing technologies are difficult to realize due to different problems such as poor dyeing quality, environmental pollution and high cost. Herein, we developed a dyeing approach using hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent (HDES) composed of thymol from thyme leaves and menthol from Mentho haplocalvx Bing (two natural compounds with pharmacological function) to overcome the problems caused by reactive dyeing of cotton. HDES dyeing approach could achieve excellent dyeing properties of cotton by optimizing water content, pick-up and concentration of alkali solution. Dye fixation kinetics of HDES dyeing system was studied based on Lagergren pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order dynamics models, compared with aqueous dyeing system. The cotton fabrics dyed in Thy-Men system exhibited excellent levelness, satisfactory colorfastness and color strength without addition of salt. Furthermore, HDES can be reused for 5 cycles of dyeing and the dyed fabrics displayed consistently high color strength values. This dyeing approach provides substantial reduction in wastewater emission and consumption of freshwater and chemicals, which has considerable potential for promoting sustainable development of the textile industry .

Modification of cotton fabric with 2-methacryloyloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC) was achieved through free-radical initiated graft polymerization with K2S2O8/NaHSO3as the initiator. Grafting of DMC was confirmed by ATR-IR of the modified cotton. The optimal grafting reaction conditions, including DMC dosage, mole ratio of initiator to DMC, temperature, and time, were determined by cation content and dye fixation results of the modified cotton. The modified fibers were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and whiteness measurement. Salt-free dyeing of the modified cotton with commonly used C. I. Reactive Blue 19, C. I. Reactive Yellow 145, and C. I. Reactive Red 195 presented high fixation of 96.8%, 98.7%, and 97.3%, respectively. These results indicated that the modification is effective for changing the surface charge of the fiber and increasing the dye-fiber reactivity. The color fastness and strength property were still very satisfactory. With excellent properties, this dyeing method shows promise in real application for eliminating the usage of salt and reducing environmental pollution. Keywords:cotton fabric;modification;reactive dyes;graft copolymerization;salt-free dyeing

In this work, a salt-free and low alkali dyeing process was developed through cationic modification of cotton fabric with a series of quaternary ammonium salts (QAS). The dyeing performance indicated that the cationic cotton fabric treated with 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyldimethyloctane ammonium chloride (CT-8) achieved better K/S value (8.87) and dye fixation (90.47 %) compared to the conventional dyeing process. Notably, the CT-8 treated fabric performed exceptionally under salt-free conditions and with a Na 2 CO 3 concentration of 5 g/L. The rationale behind the adoption of a salt-free and low-alkali dyeing process was attributed to the positive charge of quaternary ammonium groups, which had an augmenting impact on the hydroxyl reaction activity of cotton fabrics. The condensed Fukui function, atomic charge, and HOMO orbital calculations showed that the QAS structure could regulate the hydroxyl reactivity of cationic cotton fabric. Our salt-free and low alkali dyeing process not only achieved the aim of reducing chemical consumption and emissions, but also contributed to better understand the effect of hydroxyl reactivity of cationic cotton on the fixation reaction with reactive dye, and provided a new direction to achieve the require of sustainable development and clean production for a variety of industrial crops and products.

Novel reactive dyes with mono- and bi-acyl fluoride reactive groups have been designed and synthesized, which are obtained by using 2-amino-8-naphthol-6-sulfonic acid or 1-amino-8-naphthol-3,6-disulfonicacid as the coupling component and 4-aminobenzoyl fluoride (PABF) as the diazo component. Their structures have been defined by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and ultraviolet–visible spectra (UV—Vis). The novel reactive dyes were evaluated on cotton by using the exhaust dyeing method. The properties were examined in detail, and the results showed that the dye concentration of 4% (o.w.f), pH = 9, and salt-free was the most effective condition. The fixation of the novel reactive dyes on cotton was 60.27% and 64.13%, respectively. The micro-fluorine-containing reactive dyes have favorable dyeing properties owing to the covalent bond formed between the reactive group of dyes and the functional group of cotton fibers, which can achieve salt-free dyeing of cotton. Keywords:acyl fluoride;reactive dyes;cotton fabric;low molecular weight;salt-free

Cotton fabrics, as both a polysaccharide and a high-molecular-weight polymer, are typically dyed with reactive dyes, which require a high amount of salt and produce significant colored effluent, increasing treatment complexity. This paper presents a novel and revolutionary reactive dyeing technique based on diazo pre-activation and coupling coloration of cotton fibers, which is distinct from conventional reactive dyeing methods. It demonstrates a room-temperature, salt-free reactive dyeing method to address problems like high energy consumption, significant salt usage, wastewater treatment challenges, the long duration from dye preparation to application, and the difficulty of recycling cotton fibers in reactive dyeing processes. This method combines dye preparation and dyeing by amination, diazotization, and coupling. It produces salt-free, room-temperature dyeing in <4 h, which is substantially less time than a standard reactive dyeing procedure that requires both dye synthesis and application. Furthermore, cotton fabrics can be endowed with bright, deep, and diverse colors, achieving superior colorfastness with ratings of 3–4 or more and K / S values exceeding 12. Moreover, dyed cotton fabrics can be easily decolorized by alkaline washing, producing alkaline washed cotton (AWC), while preserving their good whiteness and recyclable nature.

The conventional dyeing processes employed to obtain dark-coloured fabrics necessitate the utilisation of substantial quantities of dyes, a limitation that is further compounded by the existence of dyeing saturation. To address these issues, a novel reactive dye/cationic nanoparticle is proposed. The effects of the synthesis process of reactive dyes/cationic nanoparticle on particle size, zeta potential, dispersion stability and K/S value were investigated. Furthermore, an investigation was conducted into the effect of cationic nanoparticle structure on the dye absorption of reactive dyes/cationic nanoparticles. In addition, the mechanism by which cationic nanoparticles enhance dye absorption and achieve a deep color effect was elucidated. The dyeing results demonstrated that at a constant reactive dye concentration, the K/S value of the fabric dyed with reactive dye/cationic nanoparticles was 10.12. This was 35 % higher than the reactive dye-only process, showing a pronounced deepening effect. This paper demonstrates the efficacy of a green and environmentally-friendly dyeing process that produces a deep color effect with minimal dye dosage and without salt, providing a theoretical foundation for the subsequent design of efficient darkened reactive dye/cationic nanoparticles.

In cotton fabric dyeing processes, a large amount of salt in conventional reactive dyeing or a large amount of cationic agent in conventional cationic-modified salt-free dyeing is consumed and remains in the effluent. Here, we introduce a clean and salt-free dyeing method with low chemical consumption, which reduces by 88.8% and 53.7% the chemicals per kilogram of cloth compared to conventional dyeing and conventional cationic-modified dyeing, respectively. This method is as simple as the introduction of a negative charge by selective oxidation before the cationization process of the cotton fabric. Benefiting from the introduced inner surface charge of the fiber, medium-Mw PEI can diffuse into the fiber interior and the adsorption amount increased by 10 times, resulting in a high dye uptake and fixation rate, uniform distribution of the dye molecules on the fibers, and good fastness comparable to conventional dyeing. The method in this study not only improves the utilization rate of cationic modifiers, but also reduces chemical consumption and dyeing cost, providing an economical and promising new method for the industrial application of cationic salt-free dyeing.

Traditional cotton fiber dyeing requires an abundance of salt, which leads to environmental pollution. Consequently, decreasing or eliminating the use of salt has become the primary focus of current research. In this study, Crocein Orange G was used to dye carboxymethyl cotton. Carboxymethyl cotton has better color shades than raw cotton and it is used along with a mordant in a simultaneous-mordant dyeing process, at a pH of 7, Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ·18H 2 O as the mordant. In addition, it was found that the adsorption kinetics of carboxymethyl cotton followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The equilibrium adsorption capacity increased as the temperature increased from 30 to 50 °C, and the maximum equilibrium adsorption was 8.21 mg g −1 at 50 °C. Furthermore, the adsorption isotherm data exhibited good agreement with the Freundlich isotherm. These results will help achieve salt-free dyeing of cotton fabric in the textile industry.

With the current situation of high-energy consumption and high pollution in the textile industry, developing an eco-friendly and universal dyeing technology is urgently required. Towards this goal, in this study, the dyeing technology with room temperature, salt-free, zero release, and rapid cycle dyeing for 20 min was realized using a polymer of catechol and polyethyleneimine as a dye. The dyed fabrics exhibited washing, rubbing, and perspiration fastness characteristics for practical needs, mainly attributing to the hydrogen bonding and π–π interaction between the dye molecules and the fabrics. Benefiting from the unique dyeing technology, the dyed fabrics show excellent leveling properties and adjustable chromaticity. Importantly, the mussel-inspired coating strategies are universally applicable, so the dyeing technology can be applied to various fabrics. Consequently, the environmentally friendly dyeing process based on low-cost catecholamine polymers as a dye will have a broad application prospect in the printing and dyeing industry. Moreover, the antibacterial tests showed that dyed cotton cloth, mulberry silk, and polyester fabrics all have favorable antibacterial properties, especially dyed mulberry silk fabrics have a greater than 90% bacterial reduction rate for both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus .

Cationic polymers have been used in the cationization of cotton fabrics for salt-free dyeing, but commonly used polymers are limited by their high molecular weight and low adsorption efficiency, leading to high dosage or complex modification conditions. In this study, polyallylamine with low molecular weight was found to be an efficient cationic agent for cotton modification and the modified fabrics can be salt-free dyed with different kinds of reactive dyes after the optimization of the modification process. Furthermore, the modification bath was reused by replenishing a small amount of cationic agent and adjusting the pH to the original level. The results showed that all the salt-free dyed cotton fabrics had excellent performance when the fabrics were modified with a 2 g L −1 polyallylamine solution at pH 12 for 1 h. During five consecutive bath reusing cycles, the elemental nitrogen content, zeta potential, and salt-free dyeing performance of the modified cotton fabrics were relatively stable, all the uptakes of C.I. reactive red 24 were >75 %, and all the K/S values of the dyed fabrics were higher than 11, much greater than that of conventional dyeing (about 6). In addition, compared with the conventional dyeing process and the salt-free dyeing with the bath-unreused route, the bath-reused and salt-free dyeing process reduces by 98.36 % and 62.31 % chemicals consumption per kilogram of dyed cotton fabric, respectively. This work provides a low-pollution process for salt-free dyeing of cationic cotton fabrics and provides a reference for improving the utilization efficiency of the cationic agent.

Cationization of cotton is considered to be an effective way to realize salt-free dyeing of reactive dyes. However, applying cotton modified with glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride (GTA) suffers from large consumption of the cationic reagent. One of the reasons is that high crystallinity of cotton fibers hinders the penetration of the reagents into the cellulose interior and limits the reaction between them. This paper designed to use alcohol-water-NaOH system to pretreat the fibers before cationization. With this method, crystallinity of the cotton fibers is decreased and more reactive –OH is exposed, resulting in much higher fiber-reagent reactivity and increased GTA utilization. Influence of alcohol type, alcohol-to-water ratio, and quantity of NaOH on fiber crystallinity and GTA dosage for cationization are all examined. It is found that for achieving 96.0% fixation of C.I. Reactive Black 5 in the absence of salt, GTA dosage can be reduced by half when the fibers are pretreated by alcohol-water-NaOH. Compared with ethanol,n-propanol and isopropanol,tert-butyl alcohol incorporated system shows better performance in increasing fiber reactivity due to their weaker ability to dissolve ions. In this study, XRD and FT-IR are used to demonstrate changes in crystallinity of the fibers after pretreatment. The alteration in micromorphology and hydrophilicity of the pretreated fibers is observed by SEM and water contact angle test, respectively. Furthermore, the alcohol-water-NaOH system can be recycled to show very good repeatability. Notably, all dyed samples pretreated with the system present high color saturation and satisfactory color fastness, especially that the wet rub fastness reaches 4–5 grade, which is one grade higher than that obtained from the conventional dyeing with salt. The above findings prove that alcohol-water-NaOH pretreatment is effective in enhancing reactivity of the cotton fibers and penetrability of the agent, and it shows promising prospects in real application. Keywords:cationization;cotton fiber;alcohol-water-NaOH pretreatment;salt-free dyeing;crystallinity

In this paper, we present the modification of cotton with glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride (GTA), demonstrating its capability not only for salt-free dye adsorption but also for achieving fixation reactions with monochlorotriazine-type reactive dyes under neutral conditions. The results of adsorption kinetics and isotherm experiments indicate that the adsorption of reactive dyes by modified cotton is chemisorption. Color-stripping experiments conducted on modified cotton dyed with different dyes revealed that GTA-modified cotton underwent fixation reactions with monochlorotriazine-type reactive dyes under neutral conditions. The reaction sites of modified cotton with reactive dyes were determined by measuring the 1 H NMR of the model reaction products. Mechanism investigation using Density Functional Theory (DFT) on the fixation reaction revealed that the hydroxyl groups on the modification agent chain exhibit a lower pKa value and carry more negative charge, resulting in a lower reaction barrier with monochlorotriazine-type reactive dyes. Our research findings demonstrate that GTA-modified cotton fiber enhance the reactivity of cotton, providing significant guidance for the development of novel modifiers.
