Highly sensitive and flexible ammonia sensor based on PEDOT:PSS doped with Lewis acid for wireless food monitoring

Caihong Lv,Xin Zhou,Cheng Chen,Xinghai Liu,Jun Qian

Ammonia serves as a crucial indicator of food spoilage, but current sensors lack sufficient sensitivity, stability, selectivity, and automation for practical on-site and real-time monitoring. A highly sensitive and flexible ammonia sensor based on PEDOT:PSS doped with Lewis acid (FeCl 3 solution) for wireless food monitoring is proposed in this study to solve the above limitations. The intercalation effect caused by the diffusion of Fe 3+ and hydrolyzed H + in the film coordinating with SO 3 − groups present in PSS chains leads to an increased distance between adjacent PEDOT-rich domains. It enhances ammonia sensitivity by providing additional ionic carriers and carrier transport paths within the PEDOT:PSS molecule. The results demonstrated a significant enhancement in the sensitivity of PEDOT:PSS sensor doped with FeCl 3 , exhibiting a response value of about 25 % at 25 ℃ for 1 ppm NH 3 , with an impressive detection limit of 0.23 ppm and quantification limit of 0.78 ppm (1–400 ppm). Moreover, it showcases acceptable repeatability both at 1 ppm (RSD = 4.30 %) and 100 ppm ammonia (RSD = 3.61 %), along with the notable selectivity and long-term stability. XPS, Raman analysis, and the density function theory (DFT) calculations further elucidated the sensing mechanism of the sensor towards ammonia. Additionally, a portable wireless detection device was designed, which was equipped with the Bluetooth communication and the micro-controller system to detect the decay process of fresh shrimp, realizing wirelessly real-time monitoring of food freshness through a smart phone. It’s worth noting that the innovative sensing technology holds great promise for food quality monitoring.

Highly stretchable, low-hysteresis, and robust polymeric gels enabled by solvent engineering for wireless sensing and encrypted communication

Yapeng Zheng,Tianyang Cui,Jingwen Wang,Yuquan Chen,Mingyu Ou,Hailong He,Yuan Hu,Zhou Gui

Polymeric gels have emerged as cornerstone materials in driving transformative advancements in flexible sensors, electronic skins, and wearable devices. While low hysteresis enables efficient energy transfer, high stretchability accommodates large deformations, and superior mechanical strength ensures structural integrity, their balanced integration remains a critical challenge. In this research, we introduce a solvent-engineered approach to fabricate P(HEA-co-AA) DES-IL gels via a precisely tuned hybrid solvent system. By leveraging electrostatic interactions and structural dynamics, the resulting DES-IL gels exhibit exceptional mechanical properties, including ultra-high stretchability (∼1783.6 %), high fracture strength (520.5 kPa), and superior compressive strength (∼795.0 kPa at 75 % strain). Additionally, these gels show low hysteresis (6.4 %) and a low energy coefficient (η = 0.175). These intrinsically conductive gels were utilized to develop customizable strain sensors, demonstrating notable sensitivity with a gauge factor of 1.01 and a remarkable linear correlation coefficient (R 2  = 0.998) across a broad strain range. These sensors also featured a fast response time (143 ms), low hysteresis time (161 ms), and a low strain detection threshold (0.1 %). Leveraging these features, a wireless motion detection platform was demonstrated, enabling real-time recognition of dynamic strain and human motion patterns. Furthermore, these sensors support encrypted data transmission, highlighting their potential for secure, multifunctional sensing in next-generation flexible electronics.

Improving the data transmission rates for optical wireless communication by surface passivation of CsPbBr3 quantum dots

Bin Tan,Bin Tan,Zhijie Zhang,Zhijie Zhang,Zhenhua Wang,Zhenhua Wang,Wei Xiong,Jingzhou Li,Leimin Deng,Xin Zhan

Quantum dots (QDs) preserve short photoluminescence (PL) lifetime and are widely developed for optical wireless communication (OWC). However, QDs often suffer from surface defects that limit their performance. In this work, we investigate the impact of post-treatment with didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) and ${{\rm PbBr}_2}$ on the OWC performance of ${{\rm CsPbBr}_3}$ QDs. The treatment significantly improves the PL properties, leading to an increased quantum yield of 98% and a prolonged PL lifetime of 1.24 times compared to untreated QDs. As a consequence, the ${-}{3}\;{\rm dB}$ bandwidth and maximum data transmission rates under on–off-keying (OOK) modulation are also enhanced, reaching 0.79 and 1.15 times those of pristine QDs, respectively. This improvement highlights the importance of surface passivation for optimizing ${{\rm CsPbBr}_3}$ QDs in OWC applications.

Battery-free antenna sticker for wireless sensing joint rotation

Pengxiang Si,Mingrui Liang,Jihua Zou,Yu Kuang,Juntao Zhang,Qingsha S. Cheng,Yiqian Kong,Yuxin Cai,Guozhi Huang,Yun Wu,Zhu Long,Boxin Zhao,Dan Zhang

Bio-integrated electronic devices are skin-mounted accurate tools for acquiring biological signals. The knee joint is one of the most important joints for human movement, playing a crucial role in functions such as walking, standing, sitting and containing important physiological health information about orthopedic disease diagnosis, prevention, and rehabilitation. However, it is still challenging to precisely and directly monitor joint rotation via skin-mounted bio-integrated electronic devices because joints are hidden inside the skin. In this study, we design a reusable, sustainable, battery-free, wireless, and flexible antenna sticker to adhere to the skin that can directly measure knee joint rotation degree. The antenna sticker is adhered to the lower leg and powered by electromagnetic radiation from a radio frequency identification (RFID) reader. When rotating the knee, the distance between the antenna sticker and the reader changes, leading to an alteration in the received signal strength indicator (RSSI). Meanwhile, the 3D optical motion capture system collects joint rotation data as a “gold standard”. After matching two series of real-time data using the Gaussian method, one RSSI can represent one specific joint rotation degree. The antenna sticker is stable at a variety of humidity and temperatures. The antenna sticker shows great potential to sense joint rotation and human motions. The scientific insights and engineering principles revealed in this antenna sticker will be applicable to a broad range of applications including skin-mounted epidermal electronics and wearable devices.

Jing Wang,Xingke Zheng,Jiaqi Gao,Yue Luo,Zhe Jiang

Graphical This study reports the synthesis of Ca 2 La(Ta,Mn)O 6 double perovskite red emitters, exhibiting strong red emission at 691 nm, with excellent thermal stability and UV excitation. A wireless power transfer system demonstrates adjustable luminescence under various voltages and frequencies, positioning this material as a promising candidate for indoor lighting and noncontact circuits. The rapid adoption of light emitting diodes technology stems from its high efficiency, long lifespan, and energy-saving capabilities. However, achieving high-quality white light emitting diodes, particularly through the integration of efficient red emitters, remains a significant challenge. This study reports the synthesis of Ca₂La(Ta,Mn)O₆ double perovskite red emitters via high-temperature solid-state reactions. The material exhibits a strong red emission peak at 691 nm, attributed to Mn⁴⁺ ions at symmetrical [TaO₆]⁷⁻ octahedral sites, confirmed by g = 2.008 in electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The UV excitation spectrum (250–600 nm) and thermal stability were analyzed, showing a retained optical intensity of 41% at 423 K. Additionally, a red emitter was developed, and a noncontact LCC-S wireless power transfer driving system was constructed. The system demonstrated adjustable luminescence under varying input voltages (4–7.3 V) and frequencies (90–110 kHz), highlighting its potential for dynamic lighting applications. These findings suggest Ca 2 La(Ta,Mn)O 6 double perovskite as a promising candidate for indoor lighting and noncontact circuit systems.

2D Titanium carbide printed flexible ultrawideband monopole antenna for wireless communications

Zhao Weiwei,Ni Hao,Ding Chengbo,Liu Leilei,Fu Qingfeng,Lin Feifei,Tian Feng,Yang Pin,Liu Shujuan,He Wenjun,Wang Xiaoming,Huang Wei,Zhao Qiang

Flexible titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 ) antenna offers a breakthrough in the penetration of information communications for the spread of Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Current configurations are constrained to multi-layer complicated designs due to the limited conformal integration of the dielectric substrate and additive-free Ti 3 C 2 inks. Here, we report the flexible ultrawideband Ti 3 C 2 monopole antenna by combining strategies of interfacial modification and advanced extrusion printing technology. The polydopamine, as molecular glue nano-binder, contributes the tight adhesion interactions between Ti 3 C 2 film and commercial circuit boards for high spatial uniformity and mechanical flexibility. The bandwidth and center frequency of Ti 3 C 2 antenna can be well maintained and the gain differences fluctuate within ±0.2 dBi at the low frequency range after the bent antenna returns to the flat state, which conquers the traditional inelastic Cu antenna. It also achieves the demo instance for the fluent and stable real-time wireless transmission in bending states.

Yizhang Wu,Yuan Li,Yihan Liu,Dashuai Zhu,Sicheng Xing,Noah Lambert,Hannah Weisbecker,Siyuan Liu,Brayden Davis,Lin Zhang,Meixiang Wang,Gongkai Yuan,Chris Zhoufan You,Anran Zhang,Cate Duncan,Wanrong Xie,Yihang Wang,Yong Wang,Sreya Kanamurlapudi,Garcia-Guzman Evert,Arjun Putcha,Michael D. Dickey,Ke Huang,Wubin Bai

Bioelectronic implants featuring soft mechanics, excellent biocompatibility, and outstanding electrical performance hold promising potential to revolutionize implantable technology. These biomedical implants can record electrophysiological signals and execute direct therapeutic interventions within internal organs, offering transformative potential in the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of various pathological conditions. However, challenges remain in improving excessive impedance at the bioelectronic-tissue interface and thus the efficacy of electrophysiological signaling and intervention. Here, we devise orbit symmetry breaking in MXene (a low-cost scalability, biocompatible, and conductive two dimensionally layered material, which we refer to as OBXene), which exhibits low bioelectronic-tissue impedance, originating from the out-of-plane charge transfer. Furthermore, the Schottky-induced piezoelectricity stemming from the asymmetric orbital configuration of OBXene facilitates interlayered charge transport in the device. We report an OBXene-based cardiac patch applied on the left ventricular epicardium of both rodent and porcine models to enable spatiotemporal epicardium mapping and pacing while coupling the wireless and battery-free operation for long-term real-time recording and closed-loop stimulation.

High sensitivity and fast response wireless humidity sensor enabled by MXene-Lys for finger proximity detection and health monitoring applications

Jianing Kang,Feng Gao,Ying Wang,Jinghuan Fu,Siyuan Song,Fei Jin,Gongxun Bai,Changyu Shen

Designing integrated, miniaturized, and wireless wearable humidity tracking devices is of great significance for realizing human-related intelligent sensing and health monitoring. In this work, a MXene-Lys (lysine-modified MXene) enabled, fast-response, high-sensitivity, small-sized wireless Bluetooth humidity sensor for real-time monitoring of human finger position, respiration, and physical activity is proposed. Theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that the synthesis of MXene-Lys improves the humidity sensing properties of the sensor by expanding the interlayer distance and enhancing hydrophilic ability. In experimental measurements, the DC (Direct Current) resistance response of the MXene-Lys humidity sensor reaches 30,161 when the relative humidity changes from 20 % to 90 %. Additionally, the equilibrium response time and recovery time of the MXene-Lys sensor were measured as 0.22 s and 0.45 s, respectively, during a rapid humidity shift between 45 % and 75 %. In device recovery tests, the sensor demonstrated a low hysteresis of only 2.77 % RH. Furthermore, the device showed excellent long-term stability, maintaining consistent performance over a 20-day period. The sensor was successfully applied for non-contact finger detection and human respiration rate monitoring, accurately distinguishing between fast and slow breathing patterns and detecting finger positions within 9 mm. Finally, the sensor, along with its battery, Bluetooth transmission module, and protective layer, was encapsulated into a compact wireless humidity sensor (approximately 35 mm × 15 mm × 12 mm). By receiving signals through a mobile device, the sensor enables long-duration and real-time (5.56 h) monitoring of human motion states.

A self-powered wireless sweat-analysis patch for real-time monitoring physiological status

Hanyu Cao,Rui Lin,Zhihe Long,Lili Xing,Xinyu Xue

For both professional and amateur athletes, perspiration analysis technique is considered as a powerful tool for real-time monitoring the athletes’ physiological status during sports. This study presents an innovative self-powered wireless sweat-analysis patch worn on the skin for real-time monitoring chloride concentration and pH levels in perspiration. The patch consists of two main components: self-powered unit and sensing unit. The power unit, made of piezoelectric ceramic materials, converts mechanical energy during exercise into electrical energy to drive the whole system. The sensing unit has the functions of sampling and analyzing the sweat, and wireless communication. Through an exactly designed hydrophobic and hydrophilic composite microchannel structure, sweat is effectively guided to the storage chamber. The colorimetric fabrics embedded in the chamber respond to the presence of chloride ions and pH levels in the sweat, producing a color-changing reaction. Color sensors above the fabrics detects these color changes for analyzing the sweat, while Near Field Communication (NFC) technology wirelessly transmits this information to outside mobile devices or data-collection cloud. This system not only provides a new avenue for real-time monitoring of athletes’ health status but also offers a scientific basis for adjusting training plans.

Stretchable, self-healable, and breathable biomimetic iontronics with superior humidity-sensing performance for wireless respiration monitoring

Qiongling Ding,Hao Wang,Zijing Zhou,Zixuan Wu,Kai Tao,Xuchun Gui,Chuan Liu,Wenxiong Shi,Jin Wu

Stretchable, self-healing, and breathable skin-biomimetic-sensing iontronics play an important role in human physiological signal monitoring and human–computer interaction. However, previous studies have focused on the mimicking of skin tactile sensing (pressure, strain, and temperature), and the development of more functionalities is necessary. To this end, a superior humidity-sensitive ionic skin is developed based on a self-healing, stretchable, breathable, and biocompatible polyvinyl alcohol–cellulose nanofibers organohydrogel film, showing a pronounced thickness-dependent humidity-sensing performance. The as-prepared 62.47-μm-thick organohydrogel film exhibits a high response (25,000%) to 98% RH, excellent repeatability, and long-term stability (120 days). Moreover, this ionic skin has excellent resistance to large mechanical deformation and damage, and the worn-out material can still retain its humidity-sensing capabilities after self-repair. Humidity-sensing mechanism studies show that the induced response is mainly related to the increase of proton mobility and interfacial charge transport efficiency after water adsorption. The superior humidity responsiveness is attributed to the reduced thickness and the increased specific surface area of the organohydrogel film, allowing real-time recording of physiological signals. Notably, by combining with a self-designed printed circuit board, a continuous and wireless respiration monitoring system is developed, presenting its great potential in wearable and biomedical electronics.
