Ecologically sustainable hard type piezoelectric ceramics are highly demanded for high power transducer applications in replacing lead-based piezoelectric ceramics. In this study, MnO was proposed as acceptor dopant to modify the electric properties of 0.75BiFeO 3 -0.25BaTiO 3 piezoelectric ceramics. Results showed that MnO doping reduced the lattice distortion of rhombohedral phase and facilitated the formation of pseudo cubic phase of 0.75BiFeO 3 -0.25BaTiO 3 system. Moreover, it caused the diversity of domain morphology and reduced the domain size as well. XPS analysis indicated that Mn 2+ ions suppressed the transition from Fe 3+ ions to Fe 2+ ions and gave rise to the increase of oxygen vacancies . Accordingly, the introduction of MnO synergistically increases the d 33 , K p , and Q m and lowers the tan δ of 0.75BiFeO 3 -0.25BaTiO 3 ceramics. The abnormal enhancement in hard type properties is ascribed mainly to the increase of extrinsic contribution rather than the pinning effect arising from oxygen vacancies. Finally, based on an optimal 0.75Bi(Fe 0.985 Mn 0.015 )O 3 -0.25BaTiO 3 system, an atomizer prototype was fabricated. The remarkable atomization effect suggests a competitive potential of 0.75BF-0.25BT ceramic for transducer application.

In this study, new lead-free piezoelectric ceramics (1 − x )(K 0.5 Na 0.5 )NbO 3 (KNN)– x (Bi 0.45 Y 0.05 )Na 0.5 ZrO 3 (BYNZ) were prepared using the conventional solid-state method, and the relation between the doping amount of (Bi 0.45 Y 0.05 )Na 0.5 ZrO 3 and its structural and electrical properties was investigated. Material characterization and structural analyses conducted using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy revealed that KNN–BYNZ ceramics formed single perovskite structures at 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.05 and a polycrystalline phase boundary (PPB) for the coexisting orthorhombic and tetragonal phases at 0.03 ≤ x ≤ 0.05. The ceramics exhibited desirable electrical properties at x = 0.04 ( d 33 = 305 pC/N, k p = 45.8 %, ε r = 1316, tanδ = 2.4 %, T c = 332 °C, P r = 28.2 μC/cm 2 , and E c = 1.07 kV/mm). These findings reveal that the introduction of BYNZ enables the effective formation of a PPB in the KNN-based ceramics to improve their electrical properties, and they exhibit potential for replacing lead-based piezoelectric ceramics in the market.

In this study, 0.5 wt% MnO 2 doped (0.99- x )(K 0.5 Na 0.5 )(Nb 0.965 Sb 0.035 )O 3 –0.01CaZrO 3 - x (Bi 0.5 K 0.5 )(Hf 0.98 Ti 0.02 )O 3 [abbreviated as (0.99- x )KNNS-0.01CZ- x BKHT, x = 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, 0.05, 0.06] lead-free piezoelectric ceramics were fabricated by traditional solid-state reaction method. The microstructure, phase transformation, electromechanical properties and the thermal stability of the ceramics were systematically studied. Resulting from the R-T phase coexisting, a large piezoelectric coefficient ( d 33 ~ 425 pC/N), planar electromechanical coupling factor ( k p ~ 49%) were achieved in the ceramics with x = 0.04. Furthermore, the specimens with x = 0.04 also exhibit excellent temperature stability for d 33 which was manifested by the less than 10% variation of d 33 values when the annealing temperature increase from 25 °C to 100 °C. The good comprehensive properties indicate that MnO 2 doped (0.99- x )KNNS-0.01CZ- x BKHT ceramics are promising candidates for practical application to eliminate the Pb-based piezoelectric ceramics from the market.

The investigation of lead-free ceramics with exceptional piezoelectric properties holds great importance in the substitution of lead-based materials, hence promoting the development of green technology and fostering an environmentally sustainable society. This study successfully synthesized two series of Bi(Mg 2/3 Nb 1/3 )O 3 (BMN)-modified BiFeO 3 –BaTiO 3 (BF–BT) lead-free piezoelectric ceramics using the conventional solid-state reaction approach. The phase structure, microstructure, dielectric, and piezoelectric properties of these ceramics were comprehensively investigated. A typical perovskite structure is observed in all probed compositions, and the associated phase structure undergoes a gradual transition from a rhombohedral-cubic phase mixture to a cubic-dominant phase structure as increases the content of BMN and BT. All compositions exhibit obvious core–shell microstructures with inhomogeneous element distributions. Most importantly, the BF–0.30BT–0.005BMN and BF–0.34BT–0.03BMN piezoelectric ceramics presented remarkable values for the piezoelectric coefficient (225 pC/N) and converse piezoelectric coefficient (396 pm/V), respectively. These findings highlight the potential of BMN-modified BF–BT ceramics for use in high-performance piezoelectric applications.

The binary perovskite-type compound (1 − x )BiFeO 3 – x BaTiO 3 (BF-BT) is considered as a promising high-temperature lead-free piezoelectric material due to its high Curie temperature ( T C > 400 °C) and better electromechanical properties. In this work, ternary lead-free piezoelectric ceramics with a chemical formula of (0.67 − x )BiFeO3–0.33BaTiO3– x Bi(Zn0.5Ti0.5)O 3 + 1 mol% MnO 2 (where x = 0–0.05) were prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction route. The effects of Bi(Zn 0.5 Ti 0.5 )O 3 introduction on the phase structures and microstructures, piezoelectric and dielectric properties, as well as impedance characteristics of BF-BT ceramics were investigated in detail. Firstly, all the samples synthesized exhibit a pure perovskite structure with the coexistence of rhombohedral ( R ) and tetragonal ( T ) phases, and the T phase content increases with increase in x . A small amount of Bi(Zn 0.5 Ti 0.5 )O 3 ( x ≤ 0.03) that were incorporated into the perovskite lattice of BF-BT can promote the grain growth of ceramics. Secondly, all samples were found with a notable relaxed phase transition behavior, T C of the system decreases with increase in x . The AC impedance spectra of the samples were fitted and analyzed according to the R-CPE equivalent circuit model, the electric impedance of the ceramics at high temperatures was mainly contributed by grain boundaries. Moreover, the dielectric relaxation activation energy of the samples firstly decreases and then increases with increase in x . Finally, the composition with x = 0.02 shows the optimized electrical properties among these samples, including T C = 454 °C, d 33 = 117 pC/N, k p = 23%, tan δ = 0.11, which are mainly benefited from the bismuth content compensation and the substitution of (Zn 0.5 Ti 0.5 ) 3+ for Fe 3+ at B-site reducing the valence change of Fe 3+ in BF-BT.

O 3 (marked as BNKT- x FN; x = 0.00, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03 and 0.04) piezoelectric ceramics were fabricated, and the effects of FN substitution on the dielectric, ferroelectric, piezoelectric and electric field-induced strain performance were investigated. The relative dielectric permittivity and loss tangent reveal that the phase transition temperature between ferroelectric and ergodic relaxor phase is reduced from 90 °C to room temperature (RT), even below RT, with increasing FN content. Temperature dependence of polarization–electric field loops and strain-electric field curves exhibits that the ferroelectric order is disturbed gradually, and the ergodic relaxor phase forms with increasing FN content. A large unipolar strain of 0.42% and corresponding d 33 * (= S max / E max ) of 642 pm/V for the sample with x = 0.04 are obtained under 6.5 kV/mm due to the phase transition from ergodic relaxor to ferroelectric. These results indicate that the (Fe 0.5 Nb 0.5 ) 4+ complex ion-modified BNKT-based ceramics would have great potentials for lead-free electromechanical actuator applications.

The (Ba0.85Ca0.15) (Ti0.90Zr0.10)O3+xY3++xNb5+(abbreviated as BCZT-x(Nb + Y),x= 0 mol%, 0.05 mol%, 0.1 mol%, 0.2 mol%, 0.3 mol%) lead-free piezoceramics samples were prepared by a traditional solid-state sintering method. And the effects of Yttrium and Niobium elements (Y3+and Nb5+) co-doping on the defect, phase and structure, microstructure, and comprehensive electrical properties have been investigated. Research results show that the Y and Nb elements co-doping can dramatically enhance piezoelectric properties. It is worth noting that XPS defect chemistry analysis, XRD phase analysis and TEM results together show that a new phase of double perovskite structure Barium Yttrium Niobium Oxide (Ba2YNbO6) is formed in the ceramic, and the XRD Rietveld refinement and TEM results show the coexistence of the R-O-T phase. Both these two reasons together lead to significant performance improvements of piezoelectric constant (d33) and planar electro-mechanical coupling coefficient (kp). The functional relation between temperature and dielectric constant testing results present that the Curie temperature increases slightly, which shows the same law as the change of piezoelectric properties. The ceramic sample reaches an optimal performance atx= 0.1% of BCZT-x(Nb + Y), whered33= 667 pC/N,kp= 0.58,εr= 5656, tanδ= 0.022,Pr= 12.8 μC/cm2,EC= 2.17 kV/cm,TC=92 °C, respectively. Therefore, they can be used as potential alternative materials to lead based piezoelectric ceramics. Keywords:BCZT piezoelectric ceramics;double perovskite structure;phase structure;piezoelectric properties

Piezoelectric ceramics, as essential components of actuators and transducers, have captured significant attention in both industrial and scientific research. The “entropy engineering” approach has been demonstrated to achieve excellent performance in lead-based materials. In this study, the “entropy engineering” approach was employed to introduce the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) into the bismuth ferrite (BF)-based lead-free system. By employing this strategy, a serial of novel “medium to high entropy” lead-free piezoelectric ceramics were successfully synthesized, namely (1–x)BiFeO3–x(Ba0.2Sr0.2Ca0.2Bi0.2Na0.2)TiO3 (BF–xBSCBNT, x = 0.15–0.5). Our investigation systematically examined the phase structure, domain configuration, and ferroelectric/piezoelectric properties as a function of conformational entropy. Remarkable performances with a largest strain of 0.50% at 100 kV/cm, remanent polarization ∼40.07 μC/cm2, coercive field ∼74.72 kV/cm, piezoelectric coefficient ∼80 pC/N, and d*33 ∼500 pm/V were achieved in BF–0.4BSCBNT ceramics. This exceptional performance can be attributed to the presence of MPB, coexisting rhombohedral and cubic phases, along with localized nanodomains. The concept of high-entropy lead-free piezoelectric ceramics in this study provides a promising strategy for the exploration and development of the next generation of lead-free piezoelectric materials.

BiFeO 3 –BaTiO 3 is a promising lead-free piezoelectric ceramic, exhibiting high Curie temperature and superior electrochemical characteristics. In this work, ( 1 − x ) BiFeO 3 – x BaTiO 3 (BF– x BT, x = 0 . 2 6 , 0.28, 0.30, 0.32, 0.34, 0.36) ceramics were fabricated using the conventional solid-state reaction method through precise composition control. Multiple characterization techniques, including X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and electrical property testing systems, were applied to systematically examine the crystallographic structure, microstructure, as well as the dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of the BF– x BT ceramics. The XRD results confirm that all compositions exhibit a typical perovskite structure, transitioning from a single rhombohedral phase to a rhombohedral–cubic phase mixture as the BT content increases. SEM shows apparent core–shell microstructures in the ceramics. Notably, the results demonstrated that the BF–0.30BT ceramic exhibits the maximum piezoelectric constant ( d 3 3 ) ∼ 2 1 7 pC/N, while the BF–0.34BT ceramic displays the maximum converse piezoelectric constant ( d 3 3 ∗ ) ∼ 3 2 3 pm/V, which highlights the suitability of BF–BT ceramics for high-performance piezoelectric applications.

The poor electrical properties and high leakage current of BiFeO 3 -BaTiO 3 -based ceramics are the main reasons that hinder their application. A two-step sintering method prepared the 0.68Bi 1-x La x (Fe 99.8% Sb 0.2 % )O 3 -0.32BaTiO 3 ceramics (x = 0, 0.005, 0.01, 0.015, abbreviated as BL x FS-BT). The surface morphology and properties of the ceramic were observed and tested using different techniques. La ion doping significantly affects the crystal structure, leakage current, and the electro-induced strain of the BL x FS-BT ceramics. BL 0.005 FS-BT ceramics achieve 0.198 % unipolar electro-induced strain and 396 pm/V inverse piezoelectric coefficient under a 50 kV/cm electric field, and they can maintain good temperature stability at high temperatures. A large strain of 0.43 % was obtained at 150 °C. The inhibition effect of La ion on Fe valence and oxygen vacancy formation also greatly improves the insulation performance of ceramics. This work shows that BF-BT-based ceramics via ion substitution defect engineering effectively enhance electrical and insulating properties.

In this work, (K 0.48 Na 0.52 )NbO 3 −0.05Ca x (Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 ) 1− x ZrO 3 lead-free piezoelectric ceramics were prepared by a conventional solid-state sintering method. The effects of Ca content on their phase structure, microstructures, and piezoelectric properties were systematically studied. With the increasing of Ca content, the rhombohedral-orthorhombic phase temperature gradually increases and Curie temperature of the ceramics without a conspicuous change. In addition, appropriate Ca ( x ≤ 0.2) content promotes the grain growth, which leads to a denser microstructure. Rhombohedral-orthorhombic and orthorhombic-tetragonal phase coexistence has been obtained in the composition range of 0.15 ≤ x ≤ 0.3. The ceramics with x = 0.2 possess enhanced piezoelectric properties of d 33 ∼308 pC/N and k p ∼49.0%, together with a high Curie temperature of T C ∼328 °C. Therefore, the material system of this work is a promising candidate for piezoelectric applications.

The lead-free piezoelectric ceramic is considered a promising functional anti-fouling membrane material with no risk of lead leaching. Among the various types of lead-free piezoelectric ceramics, barium titanate (BaTiO 3 ) stands out for its exceptional piezoelectric property and thermal stability, making it suitable for membrane separation applications. However, the mechanism and applicable separation system of the piezoelectric ceramic membrane (PCM) remain ambiguous, lacking both theoretical and practical guidance for the development of anti-fouling membranes. Herein, porous and dense phases and the orientation of ferroelectric domains are modulated to maximum the piezoelectric and permeability by optimizing sintering temperature and poling parameters of lead-free BaTiO 3 PCM. The thus-optimal PCM equips a benign piezoelectricity (∼ 55 pC·N −1 ) and permeability (∼ 257 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ). Further, we investigate the anti-fouling performance during the universal water treatment process (Al 2 O 3 , yeast, and oil) and extended the finite element simulations to illustrate the mechanisms from the perspectives of displacement (1500 nm) and acoustic pressure (2.22 × 10 5 Pa). The establishment of the model makes a significant contribution to providing scientific guidance for the structural design and development of piezoelectric membrane materials (lead zirconate titanate (PZT), poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), etc.) in the future.
