Solid-state electrochemiluminescence sensor of luminol based on polymer donor PM6 and ZIF-8 for sensitive detection of sunset yellow in sports drinks

Yanjia Guo,Juan Lu,Jing Wang,Yujia Song,Ruidan Li,Li Tian

PM6 is a polymer donor characterized by a wide bandgap, commonly utilized in high-performance polymer solar cells. In this study, we applied PM6 to the field of electrochemiluminescence for the first time. By sequentially modifying PM6, CS@luminol and ZIF-8 on the electrode, we constructed a simple yet novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor for the detection of the colorant sunset yellow (SY). As a donor, PM6 enhanced the charge transfer rate within the system and improved its luminescence performance. CS served to stabilize the luminescent reagent due to its viscosity. ZIF-8 acted as an accelerator in the luminol luminescence system, facilitating the absorption of more active oxygen and generating additional reactive species on the electrode surface. The combined action of PM6 and ZIF-8 resulted in a luminol ECL sensor that exhibited a sensitive and stable signal. When exposed to sunset yellow, the ECL signal diminished consistently with increasing concentrations of SY. Under optimal conditions, the ECL attenuation signal demonstrated a linear relationship with the logarithm of SY concentration, with a linear range of 5.0 × 10 − 13 –5.0 × 10 − 8  mol L -1 , and a detection limit of 1.67 × 10 −13  mol L -1 (S/N = 3). The constructed sensor exhibited excellent stability, selectivity, and repeatability, making it suitable for the actual detection of sunset yellow in sports drinks.

Green Synthesis of Carbon Quantum Dots from Broccoli Pedicels and Their Application for Fluorescence Determination of Sunset Yellow

Xiu Qin,Dongling Meng,Yun Zhou,Xueqin Xu,Binglin Lu,Yuling Pan,Zhiyan Chen

We developed a green one-step method using broccoli pedicels to synthesize carbon quantum dots (CQDs) for selective sensing of Sunset Yellow. The analyte quenched the fluorescence of CQDs through its inner filter effect. A straightforward and reliable fluorescence quenching method using CQDs as probes in monitoring Sunset Yellow was established. The approach showed linearity from 0.1 to 50 µM with a 0.08 µM detection limit and performed well in real samples. This fluorescence-based method holds potential for further investigation and widespread adoption in the food industry.

Facile synthesis of carbon quantum dots with yellow-green emission and the applications in sunset yellow detection, anti-counterfeiting, and light-emitting diodes

Yongming Guo,Tiancheng Fang,Jie Li,Zurong Chen,Yubin Xiang,Tao Tao

Yellow-green emissive carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were synthesized via the pyrolysis of sodium citrate and urea in the air. The as-synthesized CQDs manifested bright fluorescence with a maximum emission peak at 520 nm, a quantum yield of 8.43%, excellent photostability, and outstanding stability in high-salt conditions. The CQDs were used for the selective detection of sunset yellow (SY). The presence of SY resulted in a remarkable reduction in the fluorescence of the CQDs, which was caused by the inner filter effect. A good linear relationship was achieved in the range of 0-30 uM with a limit of detection of 0.22 uM. Additionally the CQDs were exploited in anti-counterfeiting and the fabrication of light-emitting diodes with satisfactory performance.

Cu2+ modified Zr-based metal organic framework-CTAB-graphene for sensitive electrochemical detection of sunset yellow

Ruijuan Lv,Ruimeng Sun,Ting Du,Yuhan Li,Lixia Chen,Yang Zhang,Yanfei Qi

A sensitive electrochemical sensor for sunset yellow (SY) was constructed based on cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) functionalized graphene (Gr) and Cu/Zr-MOF electrode modified materials. The CTAB-Gr-Cu/Zr-MOF composites were synthesized by using a mild method and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and EDX spectrum. The combination of Cu/Zr-MOF and graphene exhibited synergetic effect of the strong accumulation efficiency, fast electron transfer rate and more sensing sites towards the oxidation of SY. The new modified materials remarkably increased the electrochemical response of SY to 6.53-fold when comparing with bare electrode. Under the optimized conditions, the oxidation peak currents of SY had a linear relationship with its concentration in a wide range from 0.10 to 8.00 μM and 40.00–1000.00 μM, and the limit of detection was 6.68 nM (S/N = 3). The electrochemical method shows high sensitivity, stability, reproducibility and is successfully applied in the determination of SY in soft drinks.

Determination of Sunset yellow in foods based on a facile electrochemical sensor

Mei-ling Wang,Qian Sun,Yun-qiao Gao,Xiong-bo Yang,Jian-wei Zhao

A new electrochemical sensor to determine Sunset yellow (SY) in foods has been developed. A composite consisting of highly dispersed polypyrrole (ppy) and single-walled carbon nanotube (ppy–SCNT) was synthesized as a modification via a facile method at room temperature. The ppy–SCNT composites were demonstrated to be highly sensitive for SY detection. The influences of pH value, amount of ppy–SCNT dispersion, accumulation time and scan rate on the signal enhancement of SY are discussed. Under optimal experimental conditions, the ppy–SCNT modified glass carbon electrode (ppy–SCNT/GCE) exhibited a wide linear response to SY ranging from 2.0 × 10−9 to 1.5 × 10−6 M with a high sensitivity of 91.53 μA μM−1 and a low detection limit of 3.0 × 10−10 M (S/N = 3). The novel ppy can prevent the aggregation of SCNT via π–π interaction, and enhance their electrochemical properties for the measurement of Sunset yellow in food samples. The novel sensor possesses following features: facile fabrication, easy operation and acceptable stability. The analysis of real sample drinks demonstrated that the electrode has excellent selectivity.

Electrochemical sensing performance of Eu-BTC and Er-BTC frameworks toward Sunset Yellow

Yajuan Cai,Xiaoyu Li,Kangbing Wu,Xiaofeng Yang

Two lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) using 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H 3 BTC) and Ln(III) nitrate hydrate (Ln = Eu, Er) as precursors have been prepared through a one-step solvothermal approach. The as-synthesized compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, confirming that the targeted Ln-MOFs were successfully synthesised, with a straw-sheaf appearance. Their sensing properties were studied using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy , and the results showed that the prepared Ln-BTCs possessed larger electrochemical-response areas and stronger electron-transport capability, especially the Er-BTC. The oxidation behaviour of Sunset Yellow was investigated, and it was found that the Er-BTC exhibited a superior enhancement effect. Chronocoulometry was used to prove that Er-BTC more strongly adsorbs Sunset Yellow, resulting in a larger electrochemical response signal. The novel Sunset Yellow sensor exhibited a linear response in the range of 0.2–100 nM with a low limit of detection (0.05 nM, S/N = 3), and was applied in drink samples. The results were validated by high-performance liquid chromatography , indicating this sensor is a promising tool for Sunset Yellow detection.

An Electrochemical Sensor for Sunset Yellow Detection Based on Cu@Cu2O-BNPC Formed by Modified Porous Carbon

Feiyu Yang,Jiamin Wang,Kailiang Yin,Huan Pang

Control and detection of sunset yellow (SY) are an utmost demanding issue due to its high risk of detrimental effects on living systems caused by excessive ingestion. In this study, we reported the synthesis of Cu@Cu2O nanoparticle-decorated B and N codoped porous carbon (BNPC) and its use in developing a novel electrochemical sensor for SY. The Cu@Cu2O-BNPC catalyst was fabricated through single-step polymerization, followed by carbonization. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization results showed that Cu@Cu2O anchored on the porous BNPC successfully. Compared with the BNPC-modified electrode, it was found that the Cu@Cu2O-BNPC-modified electrode showed superior electrocatalytic activity in both electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry tests. The as-prepared Cu@Cu2O-BNPC catalyst directly acted as a sensor for amperometric detection of SY without further assembling, which exhibited an ultrahigh sensitivity of 0.09 μA nM–1 cm–2, a low limit of detection (2.4 nM), and a wide linear detection ranging from 10 nM to 8 μM. To further validate its possible application, the proposed method was successfully used for the determination of SY in Fanta drinks with satisfactory results.

Li Chunxiang,Xia Sushuang,Qian Xinmei,Zheng Mingyu,Deng Keqin

Electrocatalyst with high accumulation capacity and efficient electrocatalysis are crucial for constructing electrochemical sensors. In this study, 3D hierarchical nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets decorated by Fe 3 O 4 /CoFe nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 /CoFe@N-CSs) were successfully prepared. The morphology, composition, microstructure, and property were investigated by SEM, HRTEM, XRD, XPS, and cyclic voltammetry. The synthesized Fe 3 O 4 /CoFe@N-CSs were assembled by two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets to form flower-like layered structure. It displayed a large amount of pore space for promoting the accumulation of targets and brilliant electrocatalysis towards the electrochemical oxidation of sunset yellow (SY) and tartrazine (TTZ). Using Fe 3 O 4 /CoFe@N-CSs to modify screen-printed electrode (SPE), a disposable electrochemical sensor (Fe 3 O 4 /CoFe@N-CSs/SPE) was constructed for the analysis of SY and TTZ. It showed the detection range of 0.008–5.0 μM and 0.02–10.0 μM with the detection limit of 2.0 nM and 4.0 nM, respectively. The practical applicability of the sensor in real drink samples provided satisfactory data. The results indicated that Fe 3 O 4 /CoFe@N-CSs was a promising nanomaterial, contributing great potential for individual and synchronous measurement of trace amounts of SY and TTZ in food samples.

Coral-like porous tubular Ni doped g-C3N4 nanocomposites as bifunctional templates for photocatalytic degradation and fluorescence detection of sunset yellow in beverages

Yue Li,Ping Liu,Shisen Li,Yanting Ren,Wenzhen Du,Wenjing Yin,Haiyan Jiang,Qingli Yang,Yongchao Ma

In this study, novel Ni-doped N-vacancy coral-like porous tubular g-C3N4 (Ni–CN) nanocomposites were fabricated through a simple calcination strategy. The Ni–CN photocatalysts exhibited superior photocatalytic efficacy in the degradation of sunset yellow (SY) when exposed to visible light irradiation. The optimized Ni–CN nanocomposite contributed the highest SY removal efficiency of 96.87% after 120 min of irradiation, showing good reusability and structural stability. The as-prepared Ni–CN gel spheres had a high removal rate of SY from orange juice. In addition, Ni–CN nanosheets (Ni–CN NSs) obtained by ultrasonic stripping can be used as highly selective and sensitive fluorescent sensors for the detection of SY in beverages through dynamic or collisional fluorescence quenching mechanisms. The linear range of Ni–CN NSs for SY detection was 0–80 μM and the detection limit was 0.0397 μM. Here, the constructed Ni–CN nanocomposites provide a novel route for efficient removal and sensitive detection of SY in beverages.

Synthesis and Characterization of Amino-Terminated Chloration Modified Peanut Shell and Its Application to Preconcentrate and Detect the Concentration of Sunset Yellow in Drink and Jelly Samples

Lin Baohong,Li Song,Fang Lei,Zhu Minliang,Xiong Chunhua

Sunset yellow, as a common pigment, is harmful to people’s health. In this work, a new sensitive adsorbent based on the chlorination peanut shell and HBP-NH 2 was fabricated via one-step synthesis. Optimization of the modified peanut shell was carried out at different temperatures, different molar ratios of reagents, and different time intervals in HBP-NH 2 using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) for the first attempt. The structure of modified peanut shell was characterized by FT-IR, SEM, and TGA analysis. The adsorption properties of the modified peanut shell for Sunset yellow were investigated by batch and column experiments. Batch adsorption’s results suggested that modified peanut shell had a high adsorption capability for Sunset yellow and its maximum saturated adsorption capacity was 468.0 mg/g at 308 K, estimated from the Langmuir model. Furthermore, the modified peanut shell can be eluted easily using 3 mol/L NaOH. The proposed method was successfully applied to quantify the amount of SY in jelly and soft drinks with good recovery valuing from 98 to 104%. Hence, the proposed sensor shows a rapid and sensitive method, low cost, and simple, which is appropriate for alternative technique use for the analysis of food colorants in commercial products.

Ultrasensitive Electrochemical Determination of Sunset Yellow in Foods Using Size-Tunable Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Spheres

Meiling Wang,Huifang Shi,Mingzhu Cui,Weifeng Liu,Xuguang Liu

A "green nano" strategy was extended to prepare monodisperse polypyrrole (PPy) nanospheres with tunable sizes via simply adjusting pyrrole monomer's concentration. And a linear model was obtained and used to predict the diameter of PPy nanosphere. Nitrogen-doped carbon nanospheres (NCSs) with well-controlled diameters were further synthesized through direct carbonzilation of harvested PPy nanospheres, which demonstrated a facile route for the preparation of highly dispersible NCSs with controlled sizes. Then the potential electrochemical response of as-fabricated NCSs toward food additive-Sunset yellow (SY) was explored. NCSs with medium size (M-NCSs) showed the best electrochemical performance and an ultra-high sensitivity of 679.16 A M−1 cm−2 and lower detection limit of 0.95 nM were gained. This study therefore provides a facile route to high quality, uniform, and size-controlled PPy nanospheres and NCSs, which are promising to be applied to electrochemical and other fields.

An eco-friendly electrochemical approach for determination of sunset yellow at a Co3O4@biochar modified pencil graphite electrode

Wenting Tong,Zhichao Ma,Shulin Zhang,Apei Jiang,Ming Wei,Jianhua Jia,Wenbo Lu

The quantitative detection of food additives containing sunset yellow is of great significance to food safety. In this study, a simple, low-cost, and sustainable pencil graphite electrode modified with Co3O4@biochar is proposed for the accurate detection of sunset yellow in beverages. Absorbent cotton is selected as the biological carbon source, which is immersed in cobalt salt and then pyrolyzed in air to achieve the preparation of nanocomposite Co3O4@biochar (Co3O4@BC-700). The successful synthesis of Co3O4@BC-700 is confirmed by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS and BET. It is gratifying that the Co3O4@BC-700 modified pencil graphite electrode enables the electrochemical quantitative detection of sunset yellow with a linear range of 5.0 × 10−6–4.0 × 10−3 M, a detection limit as low as 1.3 × 10−6 M, and a cost as low as 0.5 Yuan per electrode. It also has excellent selectivity, stability and repeatability. This electrochemical sensor based on Co3O4@biochar can be employed for the concentration detection of sunset yellow in beverages. This work attempts to provide a novel path for the electrochemical detection of food additives.
