Functionalized cross-linked chitosan with ionic liquid and highly efficient removal of azo dyes from aqueous solution

Haixia Lyu,Jingshuang Fan,Yunxiafei Ling,Yan Yu,Zenghong Xie

In this study, a new ionic liquid functionalized cross-linked chitosan (IL-CCS) was prepared and utilized as an adsorbent for removing sunset yellow FCF (SY) from aqueous solutions. The physicochemical properties of the adsorbent were characterized using infrared spectroscopy (IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms and thermogravimetric analysis (TG). The effects of the experimental parameters such as initial pH, the adsorbent dose and contact time on the absorption process of SY on IL-CCS were investigated in detail. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of IL-CCS for SY had no significant differences when pH of the solution changed from 2.0 to 10.0, and the maximum adsorption capacity of IL-CCS was 300.28 mg/g, obviously higher than that of CCS (36.08 mg/g). In addition, the results of adsorption isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamics showed that the adsorption process could fit with Langmuir model, pseudo-second order model, separately. The exothermic nature of the reaction was revealed through thermodynamic parameters. From the above, IL-CCS has a good prospect for treatment of wastewater containing anionic dyes due to high efficiency adsorption during a broad pH range.

A high efficiency and rapid adsorbent for removing sunset yellow FCF by amine-modified microporous polymer

Jingshuang Fan,Yunxiafei Ling,Chao Gao,Haixia Lyu

A high specific surface area amine-modified polymer of intrinsic microporosity (NH 2 -PIM-1) was synthesized by reducing nitriles to amines in the polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1) as an adsorbent to remove sunset yellow FCF (SY) from aqueous solution. The physicochemical properties of NH 2 -PIM-1 were characterized by infrared spectra (IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherms measurement. The effect of initial solution pH value, dosage of adsorbent, contact time and initial SY concentration were systematically investigated. The sunset yellow FCF adsorption equilibrium was attained after 10 min and the adsorption capacity could reach 348.16 mg/g, which was superior to most of the other adsorbents previously reported. Kinetics and isothermal model experiments indicated that the adsorption of sunset yellow matched the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model, respectively. Thermodynamic analysis showed that the adsorption was endothermic, spontaneous and physical adsorption process. These results suggested that the NH 2 -PIM-1 was a rapid and efficient kind of adsorbent for removal of sunset yellow FCF.

Nitrogen-doped biomass-derived carbon dots for fluorescence determination of sunset yellow

Qian Zhang,Xiaoqi Wang,Lili Yuan,Lina Yu,Congying Shao,Hongxing Jia,Shun Lu

Sunset Yellow (SY) is a widely used food coloring in the food industry. However, exceeding the allowable limit of this dye poses a significant threat to human health. To address this issue, we developed Lycium ruthenicum-derived nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) with a stable blue fluorescence through hydrothermal treatment for SY determination. The quantum yield (QY) of these N-CDs was found to be up to 10.63%. Physical characterization of N-CDs was performed using various spectroscopic techniques to confirm their excellent photostability and non-toxic properties. Furthermore, the presence of SY had a substantial quenching effect on the fluorescence intensity (F0/F) of the N-CDs. Leveraging this observation, we developed a fluorescent sensor for the determination of SY in the concentration range of 0.05 to 35.0 μM, with a limit of detection (LOD, 3σ/K) of 17 nM. The excellent fluorescent sensor also showed satisfactory results in the practical drink samples. Moreover, the stability and cytotoxicity of N-CDs as a fluorescent probe were studied. Finally, the N-CDs were applied to cell imaging using A549 cells.

Facile fabrication of amphoteric SA-S@PDA-H hydrogel microspheres with acid-substitution for enhanced adsorption of cationic and anionic dyes

Jianjun Chen,Qian Zhao,Hongxing Shi,Ying Li,Limin Wang

The coexistence of cationic and anionic dyes in wastewater necessitates the development of amphoteric adsorbents. Herein, amphoteric hydrogel microspheres SA-S@PDA-H was successfully fabricated for their simultaneous removal. The microspheres were synthesized by crosslinking sodium alginate (SA) with Ca²⁺, followed by coating with polydopamine (PDA) and stearyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (STAC). The microspheres prepared through acid treatment to replace STAC was labeled SA-S@PDA-H, endowing the microspheres with enhanced adsorption capacity. FT-IR, SEM, zeta potential was utilized to characterize the structure and morphology of SA-S@PDA-H. The adsorption behavior and mechanism of SA-S@PDA-H for cationic and anionic dyes was investigated in depth. The results show SA-S@PDA-H exhibit 127.3 % of swelling ratio. The adsorption of SA-S@PDA-H for MB and MO reaches equilibrium at about 300 min followed by PSO model. The adsorption process of SA-S@PDA-H for MB and MO followed Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich model, respectively, and the maximum adsorption capacity displayed 869.1 mg/g at 45°C and 730.9 mg/g at 15°C, for MB and MO, respectively. MB adsorption increased with higher temperature and pH, while MO adsorption increased with lower temperature and pH. Adsorption of both dyes decreased at high ionic strength, and Cu 2 + and Fe 3+ had a significant inhibitory for MB than K + , while the inhibitory effects of SO 4 2- or CO 3 2- is more obvious for MO than Cl - . SA-S@PDA-H exhibited excellent adsorption performance for mixed cationic and anionic dyes through synergistic effects including electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonds, π-π stacking and micropore filling. The microspheres maintained over 80 % removal efficiency after five consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles.

Wanxiangting Ni,Xiaofan Huang,Yuxuan Meng,Siqin He,Sixuan Wang

A porous nicotinamide-TiO 2 adsorbent was synthesized via a simple, green method. • The proposed adsorbent exhibited excellent extraction performance toward azo dyes. • The performance of nicotinamide-TiO 2 is comparable with a commercial WAX column. • The proposed adsorbent efficiently extracts azo dyes from complex food matrices. In this work, a porous nicotinamide-TiO 2 nanocomposite was successfully synthesized via a simple and green method, and employed as an effective dispersive solid-phase extraction (DSPE) adsorbent for the selective enrichment of azo dyes from food products. The adsorption was found to be pH-dependent (optimum at pH 3.0) and followed a monolayer chemisorption mechanism, with the affinity being attributed to a combination of Lewis acid–base interactions, electrostatic attraction, and π–π stacking. Under optimized DSPE-HPLC conditions, the nicotinamide-TiO 2 adsorbent achieved high adsorption capacities of 14.7, 12.5, and 19.6 mg g −1 for amaranth (AM), new coccine (NC), and tartrazine (TA), respectively. The developed method with nicotinamide-TiO 2 exhibits satisfactory linear ranges with correlation coefficients >0.999, high sensitivity (limits of detection: 0.17–0.21 mg L −1 ) and good precision (intra- and inter-day RSD <5.5%). In spiked tea beverage samples, the proposed method afforded recoveries ranging from 92.3% to 103.1% for AM, NC, and sunset yellow (SY), which were superior to those obtained with a commercial WAX column, while also exhibiting lower matrix effects. The paired t -test revealed the DSPE-HPLC with nicotinamide-TiO 2 is a reliable pretreatment method to extract azo dyes, as there is no significant difference ( p  > 0.05) between this adsorbent and the commercial WAX column. The method was successfully applied to determine azo dyes in tea beverages and carbonated drinks. Overall, DSPE-HPLC method using nicotinamide-TiO 2 was proven to has promising potential for application in determination azo dyes in food products. Natural product flavonoid of naringenin based thin-film composite polyester membranes preparation for antibiotic separation

Chao Wang,Peijuan Chu,Tengfei He,Cheng Yi,Yue Yao,Lijia Liu,Chunhong Zhang

The application of membrane separation technology in wastewater treatment and pharmaceutical purification has attracted considerable attention. The development of a membrane with effective separation performance and antibacterial properties is of considerable interest for the separation and purification of antibiotics. Here, a thin-film composite (TFC) polyester membrane with effective antibiotic removal and antibacterial properties was fabricated via a facile one-step interfacial polymerization (IP) strategy. Naringenin (Nar), a natural product of flavonoid material derived from the pericarp, was utilized as the aqueous monomer. The suitable reactivity of Nar afforded the resulting membrane with a highly negative charged surface. The rejection performances for the antibiotics cephalothin, cefuroxime sodium, ceftriaxone sodium, and cefoperazone sodium were 96.3 %, 97.7 %, 99.2 %, and 99.8 %, respectively. The pure water permeance was 7.5 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 at a transmembrane pressure of 5 bar. The antibacterial efficacy was greater than 99.0 % against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , attributable to the flavonoid structure of Nar. The present work proposed a feasible strategy to prepare TFC membranes with high nanofiltration performance and intrinsic antibacterial efficacy.

Zirconium metal-organic cage integrated with fluorescein sodium: A dye-functionalized dual-emission platform for ratiometric sensing of sunset yellow

Shuangbao Li,Shuaibing Ma,Jingyu Sun,Yuteng Zhang,Zi'an Wang,Lingfeng Sheng,Bo Jiang,Qingxin Liu,Li Jin

In present work, a dye-integrated composite material, FS@ZrT-1-NH 2 , was fabricated through a one-pot solvothermal method. The fabrication process involved the effective combination of fluorescein sodium (FS) with an amino-functionalized metal-organic cage (ZrT-1-NH 2 ) matrix. Subsequently, the as-prepared composite was employed as a dual-emission fluorescent probe for the targeted detection of sunset yellow (SY). Interaction energy and reduced density gradient (RDG) analyses revealed that hydrogen bonding interactions played a pivotal role in the stabilization of the composite. The unique dual-emission signal originated from efficient energy transfer between the cage and the embedded FS. This sensor exhibited a wide linear response to SY from 9.945 to 16.575 nM with a low detection limit of 0.980 nM, alongside remarkable selectivity. The fluorescence quenching mechanism was attributed to the synergistic effect of the inner filter effect (IFE) and static quenching. Notably, the proposed FS@ZrT-1-NH 2 ratiometric fluorescent probe achieved high recovery rates (102.02%–106.10%) and low relative standard deviations (RSD <3.1%) for SY detection in orange-flavored carbonated beverages, verifying its feasibility and practical applicability. These findings demonstrate that the dual-emission FS@ZrT-1-NH 2 composite can function as a highly promising platform for the sensitive and selective detection of SY.

Efficient biodegradation and decolorization of azo dyes using peroxidase/chitosan-based enzyme-assisted coagulation

Na-won Baek,Shin-hee Lee

This study presents a novel enzyme-assisted coagulation (EAC) system as a low-carbon, energy-free strategy for the efficient treatment of azo dyes in textile wastewater. The EAC system integrates enzymatic oxidation with natural polymer-based coagulation and operates effectively under mild conditions without external energy input. Using horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and chitosan as model components, the system was applied to three representative azo dyes—Allura Red, Eriochrome Black, and Sunset Yellow—achieving decolorization efficiencies exceeding 98 %. Analytical techniques, including UV–Vis spectroscopy, FTIR, HPLC, and GC–MS, confirmed effective dye degradation and the stable aggregation of byproducts. The EAC mechanism involves the dual functionality of chitosan, which initially acts as an adsorbent and flocculant to enhance enzyme accessibility and subsequently serves as a stabilizing matrix that immobilizes and facilitates the removal of degradation products. This synergistic interaction between HRP and chitosan offers an efficient, biodegradable, and environmentally friendly approach for sustainable dye wastewater treatment.

Acid-treated sodium alginate-based composite gel microspheres toward methylene blue removal: Fabrication and mechanistic insights

Hongxing Shi,Qian Zhao,Mingjie Han,Yin Li,Limin Wang,Jiying Men

Dye-contaminated wastewater from the textile and dyeing industries poses severe environmental and health risks due to the persistence and toxicity of synthetic dyes. To address this issue, sodium alginate (SA)-based composite gel microspheres were fabricated via ionic crosslinking with calcium chloride followed by acid exchange to enhance structural stability and adsorption performance. Two types of functionalized adsorbents were synthesized and optimized: SA modified, and with stearyltrimethylammonium chloride (SA/S-H) and SA co -functionalized with poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (SA/S/PS-H). Comprehensive characterization using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the successful preparation and compositional uniformity of the adsorbents. Adsorption kinetics for methylene blue (MB) followed the pseudo-second-order model, reaching equilibrium within 6 h, while isotherm data fitted the Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) model. Notably, the incorporation of PSSS significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity; at 45 °C, SA/S/PS-H achieved a remarkable maximum adsorption capacity of 900.91 mg/g, compared to 612.61 mg/g for SA/S-H. The dominant adsorption mechanisms were identified as electrostatic attraction, micropore filling and hydrogen bonding. Furthermore, the microspheres showed excellent reusability despite the interference of co-existing cations. This study presents a simple and scalable approach for constructing high-performance bio-based adsorbents with significant potential for sustainable and practical treatment of dye-laden wastewater.

Efficient in-situ polymerization of PANI on PEEK for interlayered thin-film composite membranes: A high-performance strategy for organic solvent nanofiltration

Yunhe Xing,Yanwei Xiao,Xiao Liu,Fei Xu,Yu Wang,Jiahao Cui,Xiaoping Lu,Shuling Zhang,Guibin Wang,Jiashuang Luan

The construction of a polymer interlayer between the substrate and polyamide (PA) layer demonstrates effectiveness in enhancing membrane separation performance through structural and chemical property regulation. Poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) exhibits superior solvent resistance and durability that enables itself to be a suitable substrate in organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN). However, the inherent hydrophobicity and limited processability of PEEK restrict its application in thin-film composite (TFC) membrane fabrication. In this work, a single-step in-situ polymerization approach was used to grow polyaniline (PANI) on PEEK substrates, resulting in a PANI/PEEK TFC membrane. The introduction of PANI significantly improved the hydrophilicity of PEEK substrates while simultaneously enhancing their amine monomer adsorption capacity. These conditions promote the formation of a thin PA layer and enhance the OSN performance. The optimized PANI/PEEK TFC membranes demonstrated exceptional methanol permeance (10.0 L m −2  h −1 bar −1 ) coupled with a low molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of 371 Da. Moreover, PANI/PEEK TFC membranes maintain operational stability at 6 bar for 72 h while demonstrating selective separation efficiency in mixed dye solutions. This facile fabrication strategy for interlayered TFC membranes provides a novel paradigm for developing high-performance OSN membranes.

Magnetic Alginate Carbon Aerogel Adsorbents for Water-/Oil-Soluble Dyes

Li Xiaran,Zhu Haishan,Zhang Yuke,Meng Ruiqi,Xiong Zhong,Xia Yanzhi

The discharge of dye wastewater and waste-oil has brought serious harm to the ecological environment and human health. Unfortunately, bifunctional adsorbents towards aqueous dyes in water- and oil-soluble dyes in organic media are still rare to date. In this research, magnetic ferric alginate carbon aerogel (FeACA) was prepared from sodium alginate by wet spinning, Fe 3+ -ion cross-linking, and pyrolysis in N 2 atmosphere. FeACA obtained a specific surface area of 215.3 m 2  g −1 with a mean pore size of 3.1 nm and exhibited near superparamagnetic character. The adsorption capacities of FeACA for methylene blue, Congo red, and oil red O were 123.7, 141.1, and 65.7 mg g −1 , respectively. FeACA revealed a good broad-spectrum adsorption performance for other eleven various types of dyes. This study demonstrates a fast adsorption strategy by combining the magnetic separation and ethanol desorption. Utilizing the strategy, the adsorption time of MB was reduced from 12 h to 205 min with half dosage of adsorbent. This research provides new insights for achieving multifunctional dye adsorption.

A Bioinspired Capillary Force-Induced Driving Strategy for Constructing Ultra-Low-Pressure Separation Membranes

Jing Yang,Ligang Lin,Fengling Tang,Zixu Zhang,Zitian Liu,Meina Xu,Xu Yang,Qiying Wang,Aishan He,Qi Cheng,Chunhong Wang

The development of low-pressure or pressureless self-driven membranes is important for saving energy and overcoming the critical trade-off effect in membrane separation processes. However, conventional self-driven membranes rely on gravity, which is effective in the separation of large-sized materials but is still ineffective in the fine separation of small molecules. Herein, inspired by the capillary effect that exists in nature, a capillary force-induced membrane-driving strategy for fine separation at ultra-low pressures is demonstrated. Hydrophilic nanoparticles are prepared by a cross-linking reaction between tannic acid and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and then introduce them into membrane pores to simulate sand accumulation with an aim to generate the capillary force. The membrane is then used in ultra-low pressure membrane separation. Interestingly, it is found that the membrane has excellent performance in the separation of dye/salt mixtures (dye rejection > 99%, salt rejection < 10%) and a high permeate flux (160 L m −2 h −1 ) under near “zero pressure” conditions. Moreover, the structural stability of the membrane is verified. Introducing capillary forces into membranes as an autonomous driving force can be a promising universal approach that can be added up to the toolbox for the efficient preparation of separation membranes.
