Preparation and performance testing of corn starch/pullulan/gallic acid multicomponent composite films for active food packaging

Min Zhang,Bin Yang,Zimeng Yuan,Qi Sheng,Changchun Jin,Jun Qi,Manman Yu,Yingnan Liu,Guoyuan Xiong

The present study investigated the mechanical characteristics, hydrophobicity, antioxidant and antibacterial properties, FTIR, SEM and XRD of films fabricated with corn starch and pullulan (CS/PUL) by adding different concentrations of Gallic acid (GA) (0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% w/v). The mechanical strength and opacity of CS/PUL films were enhanced by the addition of 1.0% GA. The water vapor permeability (WVP) of CS/PUL films was significantly lower in films with GA compared to those without ( P  < 0.05). The addition of GA, especially at concentrations of 1.0% and 1.5%, resulted in considerably better free radical scavenging activities on DPPH than films without GA ( P  < 0.05). Interestingly, the highest water contact angle (WCA) value was observed in films with 0.5% GA, indicating stronger hydrophobicity. Furthermore, the antibacterial capabilities of the films, particularly against E. coli and P. aeruginosa , improved with an increase in GA concentration. The results of FTIR, SEM and XRD analyses showed that GA was well distributed in the CS/PUL matrix.

Pullulan nanofibrous films incorporated with W/O emulsions via microfluidic solution blow spinning technology

Liying Huang,Di Zhang,Nitong Bu,Yuanbo Zhong,Pingping Tan,Huanglong Lin,Jie Pang,Ruojun Mu

In this work, pullulan (PUL) nanofibrous films incorporated with water-in-oil emulsions (PE) were prepared by microfluidic blowing spinning (MBS). The microstructures of nanofibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). With the addition of W/O emulsions, the thermal stability, mechanical, and water barrier properties of PUL nanofibers were improved. Increases in emulsion content significantly affected the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of nanofibrous films. ABTS and DPPH free radical scavenging rates increased from 10.26 % and 8.57 % to 60.66 % and 57.54 %, respectively. The inhibition zone of PE nanofibers against E. coli and S. aureus increased from 11.00 to 20.00 and from 15.67 to 21.17 mm, respectively. In addition, we investigated the freshness effectiveness of PE nanofibrous films on fresh-cut apples. PE nanofibrous films significantly maintained the firmness, and reduced the weight loss and browning index of the fresh-cut apple, throughout the 4 days of storage. Thus, the PE nanofibrous films exhibited good potential to prolong the shelf life of fresh-cut fruit and promote the development of active food packaging.

Stability and bioaccessibility of curcumin emulsions stabilized by casein hydrolysates after maleic anhydride acylation and pullulan glycation

Yi Pan,Xiao-Min Li,Ran Meng,Bao Zhang

ABSTRACT The effects of maleic anhydride (MA) acylation and pullulan glycation on casein hydrolysates (CH) and the physicochemical stability of modified or unmodified CH-stabilized emulsions were explored. Compared with casein, the solubility of CH was improved, and CH 1 (hydrolysis degree 4%) exhibited the optimal emulsifying properties. After the acylation of MA, degrees of acylation (DA) increased with increasing addition of MA. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that a covalent bond was formed between MA and CH 1 . The results of pullulan glycation indicated that the degree of glycation decreased with increasing DA. Acylation combined with glycation effectively reduced the surface hydrophobicity of CH. Results of analysis of physicochemical stability and gastrointestinal fate of curcumin in emulsions revealed that CH modified by MA acylation and pullulan glycation played a positive role in enhancing the stability and bioaccessibility of curcumin loaded in emulsions.

Polydopamine/montmorillonite-embedded pullulan hydrogels as efficient adsorbents for removing crystal violet

Xiaoliang Qi,Qiankun Zeng,Xianqin Tong,Ting Su,Lei Xie,Kai Yuan,Jianxiong Xu,Jianliang Shen

Both secondary pollution and the low mechanical strength of adsorbents have severely impeded the practical application of adsorption methods in the dye wastewater treatment. In this work, we innovatively synthesized a composite hydrogel adsorbent by incorporating polydopamine (PDA) and montmorillonite (MMT) into the pullulan hydrogel matrix for dye adsorption. First, the successful formation of the resultant adsorbents was verified by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope elemental mapping analysis. Then, several physicochemical properties (such as thermal and swelling properties, microarchitecture, and mechanical strength) of the five prepared adsorbents (PM1–PM5) were investigated. These results demonstrated the adsorbents had tunable properties, which can be achieved by adjusting the PDA/MMT mass ratio. Next, the dye adsorption performance was systematically explored. The resultant adsorbent (PM3) had a maximum adsorption capacity of 112.45 mg/g and its adsorption data was best described by a Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic. Finally, the adsorption mechanisms and potential commercial practicability of the adsorbent were studied. Altogether, the designed adsorbent could effectively avoid generating the secondary pollution typical of adsorbents and it displayed excellent mechanical strength, thus opening up a new horizon in mitigating environmental pollution from textile industries.
