A large number of spent sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) will be produced as SIBs become more widely used. However, components of spent SIBs, such as the cathode Prussian white Na 2 Mn[Fe(CN) 6 ], are toxic and hazardous, leading to water and soil pollution and posing a threat to human health. Therefore, recycling spent SIBs cathode is important and meaningful. Here, we use phytic acid-based low-melting mixture solvents (LoMMSs) for the efficient recovery of toxic and hazardous SIBs cathode Prussian white at mild temperatures. Results show that the highest Na leaching efficiency from Prussian white could reach 94.7% by polyethylene glycol 200:phytic acid (14:1) at 80°C for 24 h with a liquid/solid ratio of 50:1. Furthermore, the metal extracted from the leachate is found to precipitate when water is used as the anti-solvent, with ammonium hydroxide achieving the highest precipitation efficiency of 89.3% at room temperature. Summary Spent SIBs cathode Prussian white is toxic and hazardous, causing water and soil pollution. Recovery process of spent SIBs cathode by LoMMSs is mild, green, and efficient. Metal in leachate could be precipitated by anti-solvents at room temperature.

Prussian white and its analogues are regarded as promising cathode candidates for sodium-ion batteries because of their high capacity, facile synthesis and abundant resource. However, their cyclic lifespans are limited. One of the main reasons is the complex phase transformations of their crystal structure during the insertion/desertion of sodium ions. Herein, nickel-doped manganese-based Prussian white composited with carbon nanotubes were synthesized with the aim to stabilize crystal structure during charging/discharging and consequently enhance cyclic performance. Structural and chemical characterizations indicate that the doped nickel atoms occupy lattice sites of manganese. Electrochemical evaluations indicate that the obtained cubic-structured Na 1.55 Mn 0.94 Ni 0.06 [Fe(CN) 6 ] 0.92 ∙2.74H 2 O/carbon nanotubes delivers a reversible capacity of 98 mAh g −1 with an initial coulombic efficiency of 97% at 1C and still maintains 64 mAh g −1 after 400 cycles. Serial ex situ X-ray diffractions disclose that the nickel-doped manganese-based Prussian white maintains its cubic structure during the insertion/desertion of the sodium ions. No phase transformation is observed except a little variation of the lattice constants. The structural stability enables high cyclic stability. Nickel doping and carbon nanotube composition are efficient ways to improve the electrochemical performance of the manganese-based Prussian white for sodium-ion batteries. Graphical abstract

Sodium manganese hexacyanoferrate, also called Prussian white (PW), has attracted much attention as a promising cathode material for Na-ion batteries due to its high-voltage platform and inexpensive elemental composition. However, their parasitic vacancies and water molecules often deteriorate the electrochemical performance. Proper regulation of such defects in scale-up preparation is still a challenge. In this work, PW was prepared via aqueous precipitation assisted by manganese oxalate in a 10 L reactor. High-quality Na2.32Mn[Fe(CN)6]0.95□0.05·1.97 H2O was obtained and exhibited a specific capacity of 148 mAh g–1. The phase transition from monoclinic to rhombohedral during long-term cycling for such an ultra-Na-rich cathode has been first reported. In addition, the vacuum drying temperature was further discussed, and 150 °C is more suitable for achieving the balance between dehydration and electrical properties.

The microstructure and morphology of the crystal play an important role in the physical and electrochemical properties of electrode materials. Here we report a highly crystalline microcube structure of Na-rich Prussian white Na1.92Mn[Fe(CN)6]0.98 for sodium ion battery cathodes. The obtained structure features high crystallinity of the monoclinic structure with an average cubic size of 3–5 μm. Because of the improvement on microstructural and electrical properties, the cathode design enables promising electrochemical performance. The electrode exhibits an outstanding rate performance with reversible capacities of 152.8 mA h g−1 (10 mA g−1), 128.1 mA h g−1 (100 mA g−1), 118.7 mA h g−1 (500 mA g−1) and 110.3 mA h g−1 (1000 mA g−1). It also exhibits a good cycling performance with a capacity retention of 82% after 500 cycles at 100 mA g−1. More importantly, the XRD analysis reveals a highly reversible monoclinic–cubic–monoclinic structural evolution of the cathode upon Na+ extraction/insertion. The good rate and cycling performance can be attributed to the robust crystal structure with few defects and fast Na+ transfer kinetics. The high purity single crystal morphology can also reduce the side reactions on the electrode/electrolyte interface.

Rechargeable hydrogen gas batteries are gaining significant attention as a highly reliable electrochemical energy storage technology. However, the high costs of both cathode and anode limit their widespread applications. Here, we demonstrate a low-cost H 2 /K + hybrid battery using Fe–Mn-based Prussian white - K 2 · 74 Mn[Fe(CN) 6 ] 0.90 ·0.13H 2 O (KMF) as cathode and non-noble metal high entropy alloy (NNM-HEA) as anode. It demonstrates a high capacity of 146.1 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 with excellent rate performance and stability. Even with a ∼7-fold increase in active loading of the KMF cathode, the capacity of the H 2 /K + battery remains as high as 100.5 mAh g −1 . Furthermore, a low-cost H 2 /K + hybrid battery using our newly developed NNM-HEA based hydrogen catalytic anode is successfully fabricated, which shows an extended capacity with a retention of 90% after 1200 cycles. This work will pave the way for designing low-cost electrode materials for high-performance, large-scale energy storage hydrogen gas batteries.

Prussian white (PW) is one of the most promising candidates as a cathode for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) because of its high theoretical capacity, excellent rate performance, and low production cost. However, PW materials suffer severe capacity decay during long-term cycling. In this work, a robust cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) is designed on the PW cathode by employing cresyl diphenyl phosphate (CDP) and adiponitrile (ADN) as electrolyte additives. CDP and ADN possess higher highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels (HOMO) than other solvents, leading to the preferential decomposition of CDP and ADN to construct an inorganics-rich CEI layer in situ on the PW cathode. Benefiting from this CEI layer, the degradation of PW is effectively inhibited during the long cycling. The Na||PW cell achieves an excellent cycling performance with a capacity retention of 85.62% after 1400 cycles. This work presented here provides a feasible strategy for improving the cycling performance of PW by electrolyte modification.
