Perovskite solar cells have become stars in photovoltaics due to their rapidly increased efficiency. However, their stability is still below par due to moisture permeation from grain boundaries and defects. To conquer both problems at once, a passivation agent 3,4,5,6-tetrafluorophthalicacid (TFPA) is rationally designed to heal both for not only improved cell efficiency but also better stability. It is found that the TFPA is prone to distribute along grain boundaries and has little influence within the bulk of the perovskite film. In addition, it appears that the TFPA helps to reduce the film roughness, to adjust the energy level, to facilitate hole transporting from perovskite to spiro-OMeTAD, and to increase the hydrophobicity of the perovskite film, as it is demonstrated by the inhibited nonradiative recombination and prolonged carrier lifetime. Owing to strong interactions between F, -COOH, and Pb, the device with TFPA shows outstanding efficiency and stability. A perovskite solar cell with TFPA modification delivers a champion efficiency of 23.70% and a significantly enhanced stability that the device maintains 90% of its initial efficiency after 5200 h, among the best ambient stability. Herein, an effective strategy of grain boundary passivation is provided to improve the stability of perovskite solar cells.

One of the key aspects contributing to the rapid development of perovskite solar cells is to prepare high-quality perovskite films via morphology control and interface engineering. Here, we demonstrate that the additive HPbI3 works effectively on both morphology control and grain boundary passivation of CH3NH3PbI3–xClx thin films. By inducing HPbI3 to the crystal transformation process, high-quality perovskite films consisting of micro-sized grains with boundaries passivated by PbI2 can be readily produced. The perovskite film obtained with HPbI3 as the additive achieves a much longer carrier lifetime compared to the pristine perovskite film without the additive. Under the optimal HPbI3 amount (5.0%), the average power conversion efficiency of the planar-heterojunction solar cells is increased by ∼24% to 17.42% from 14.09% for the device without the additive, and the champion efficiency reaches 18.59%. The devices without any encapsulation show impressive shelf stability, retaining more than 85% of the initial efficiency after being stored in ambient environment for over 40 days.

We prepared high-performance photoresistors based on CH3NH3PbI3films with a high PbI2doping level. The role of PbI2in CH3NH3PbI3perovskite thin film was systematically investigated using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy, and photoconductive atomic force microscope. Laterally-structured photodetectors have been fabricated based on CH3NH3PbI3perovskite thin films deposited using precursor solution with various CH3NH3I:PbI2ratios. Remarkably, the introduction of a suitable amount of PbI2can significantly improve the performance and stability of perovskite-based photoresistors, optoelectronic devices with ultrahigh photo-sensitivity, high current on/off ratio, fast photo response speed, and retarded decay. Specifically, a highest responsivity of 7.8 A/W and a specific detectivity of 2.1 × 1013Jones with a rise time of 0.86 ms and a decay time of 1.5 ms have been achieved. In addition, the local dependence of photocurrent generation in perovskite thin films was revealed by photoconductive atomic force microscopy, which provides direct evidence that the presence of PbI2can effectively passivate the grain boundaries of CH3NH3PbI3and assist the photocurrent transport more effectively. Keywords:high PbI2doping content;PC-AFM;photoresistor;grain boundary passivation

Organic–inorganic halide perovskites have emerged as attractive materials for use in photovoltaic cells. Owing to the existence of dangling bonds at the grain boundaries between perovskite crystals, minimizing the charge recombination at the surface or grain boundaries by passivating these trap states has been identified to be one of the most important strategies for further optimization of device performance. Previous reports have mainly focused on surface passivation by inserting special materials such as graphene or fullerene between the electron transfer layer and the perovskite film. Here, we report an enhanced efficiency of mesoscopic perovskite solar cells by using graphene quantum dots (GQDs) to passivate the grain boundaries of CH3NH3PbI3. The highest efficiency (17.62%) is achieved via decoration with 7% GQDs, which is an 8.2% enhancement with respect to a pure perovskite based device. Various analyses including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, time-resolved photoluminescence decay and open-circuit voltage decay measurements are employed in investigating the mechanism behind the improvement in device performance. The findings reveal two important roles played by GQDs in promoting the performance of perovskite solar cells – that GQDs are conducive to facilitating electron extraction and can effectively passivate the electron traps at the perovskite grain boundaries.
