Flexible, stimuli-responsive and self-cleaning phase change fiber for thermal energy storage and smart textiles

Zixuan Niu,Shengyang Qi,Suhaib Shuaib Adam Shuaib,Weizhong Yuan

Smart textiles have emerged as potential part for wearable devices and protective systems. Integrating phase change materials (PCMs) into stimuli-responsive fibers offers exciting opportunities for smart clothing to realize instant energy conversion/storage and temperature regulation. However, the production of flexible and efficient smart energy storage fiber is still challenging. Here, flexible electro-/photo-driven energy storage polymer fiber with outstanding hydrophobicity and self-cleaning property is fabricated. The smart fiber is prepared by integrating conductive silver nanoflowers and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) as well as hydrophobic fluorocarbon resin with a facile and novel wet-spun phase change fiber to gain high flexibility, excellent electrical conductivity , high enthalpy, tunable phase change temperature , extra shape stability and outstanding hydrophobicity. The highest elongation of the smart fiber is more than 500% and the enthalpies of the fibers varies from 98.6 to 124.5 J g −1 according to the adjustable content of phase change materials. The coordination of Ag nanoflowers and PEDOT:PSS enable the fiber outstanding electrical conductivity of 190 S/m 2 . The high electrical conductivity, excellent photo capture and good heat dissipation enable the fiber high electro-/photo-heat conversion efficiency (70.1% and 89.0%, respectively). The smart energy storage fiber with integrative properties could be woven into fabrics, providing a new option for smart textiles in wearable and protective systems.

Large-Area Knittable, Wash-Durable, and Healable Smart Fibers for Dual-Modal Sensing Applications

Bo Zhou,Man Yuan,Hao Lu,Xiaoyan Qiu,Jize Liu,Zhong Zhao,Xinxing Zhang,Guangming Cai

Fiber-based multimodal sensors with electrical/optical signals are highly desired for next-generation wearable electronics. Despite the remarkable progress in this area, achieving large-scale knittable, washable, and self-healing performance in fiber-based multimodal sensors simultaneously remains a great challenge. Here, a smart fiber capable of exhibiting piezoresistive/luminescent properties based on an H-bonding connected multilayered core–shell nanostructure is developed. The core principle of this design involves constructing strong interfacial interactions between the fiber layers, which results in a sensor with high sensitivity (gauge factor = 12383500), exceptional water resistance, and robust self-healing properties (tensile strength 30.9 MPa, healing efficiency 72.9%). Unlike traditional fiber-based sensors where elaborate nanostructures are prone to shedding during knitting, this strategy enables the fiber sensors with excellent knittability to be patterned in the fabric, improving both optical and electrical sensitivities. This work is anticipated to make a significant contribution to the further development of wearable electronic products and visual human–computer interaction electronic devices.

Smart fabrics with liquid metal reinforced PU/CNT/MXene multilayer structures for constructing multifunctional sensors and wearable electronics

Haijiao Lin,Hui Wang,Yongguang Yang,Yuxuan Zhang,Ling Li,Youwei Zhao,Wenming Zhang

Smart fibers as interfaces for sensing environmental information are expected to accelerate sustainable development in the wearable era. However, challenges remain in terms of fiber versatility, low power consumption and the ability to discriminate between different mechanics. Herein, we propose a novel three-layer core–shell manufacturing strategy: the combination of coaxial spinning and spraying technology, using pure elastomers (polyurethane) as a base layer to increase the tensile range; mixing a liquid metal (LM) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) doped into a polyurethane (PU) matrix as a durable electrode layer to reduce the power used and enhance the electron transfer pathway; spraying pleated MXene coatings to enrich the gas sensing sites. Finally, the strain sensor has an impressive gauge factor (GF) of 1.1367 ± 0.08643 (in the sensing range of 0–200%, R2 = 0.99425), a low strain detection limit of 1% and a fast response time of 0.12 s. Meanwhile, the single fibers, which are warp and weft braided, can also accurately sense changes in spatial pressure. In addition, these fibers exhibit superior electrothermal performance, with the capability to heat from room temperature to 65.7 °C at a 10 V voltage just in 50 s. Furthermore, with the strong hydrogen bonds formed between the MXene outer coating and organic gas molecules, it is highly selective for acetone, and with the excellent electrical conductivity of liquid metals, it can also be used as an electrical heating device. These results provide effective tools for building multifunctional sensing platforms for strain, pressure, temperature, and gases, which can be applied in fields such as wearable health and environmental monitoring.

Color-changing smart fibrous materials for naked eye real-time monitoring of wound pH

Nan Pan,Juanrong Qin,Pingping Feng,Zeke Li,Botao Song

Real-time monitoring of wound pH may provide information about the wound healing status and potential bacterial infection. Herein, we integrated the biocompatible color changing substance curcumin into a fibrous material, capable of in situ real-time visually monitoring the wound pH. The results indicate that the curcumin-loaded fibrous mat exhibits an obvious pH-dependent color change from yellow to red brown with a change in pH from 6.0 to 9.0, which can be easily detected by the human naked eye. Moreover, the wound pH conditions can be determined with the aid of a smart phone App after image analysis. Due to their flexibility, the fibrous materials have been further processed into various shapes from 1D to 3D for fitting the irregular wounds. It is believed that smart fibrous materials that can simultaneously real-time monitor the wound pH and repair the wound may change wound management to a convenient and comfortable way.

Multiresponsive Graphene-Aerogel-Directed Phase-Change Smart Fibers

Guangyong Li,Guo Hong,Dapeng Dong,Wenhui Song,Xuetong Zhang

Wearable devices and systems demand multifunctional units with intelligent and integrative functions. Smart fibers with response to external stimuli, such as electrical, thermal, and photonic signals, etc., as well as offering energy storage/conversion are essential units for wearable electronics, but still remain great challenges. Herein, flexible, strong, and self-cleaning graphene-aerogel composite fibers, with tunable functions of thermal conversion and storage under multistimuli, are fabricated. The fibers made from porous graphene aerogel/organic phase-change materials coated with hydrophobic fluorocarbon resin render a wide range of phase transition temperature and enthalpy (0–186 J g −1 ). The strong and compliant fibers are twisted into yarn and woven into fabrics, showing a self-clean superhydrophobic surface and excellent multiple responsive properties to external stimuli (electron/photon/thermal) together with reversible energy storage and conversion. Such aerogel-directed smart fibers promise for broad applications in the next-generation of wearable systems.

Smart multi-responsive aramid aerogel fiber enabled self-powered fabrics

Xingwei Zuo,Tingting Fan,Lijun Qu,Xueji Zhang,Jinlei Miao

Wearable electronics and systems with self-powered real-time responses to various stimuli, such as mechanical, electrical, thermal and optical signals, are eagerly desired, however still remain great challenges. Herein, smart fibers with multi-response to external stimuli are developed via wet spinning porous aramid aerogel nanofibers while utilized as a three-dimensional hierarchical percolating skeleton for silver nanowires (AgNWs) interwoven MXene conductive network. The coaxial AgNWs/MXene@  aramid aerogel nanofibers with entangled heterostructures effectively avoid “trade-off” effect between high electrical conductivity and mechanical flexibility of smart fibers . Meanwhile, the hierarchical porous structure of aerogel conductive fibers induced strong capillary force and confinement to polyethylene glycol , which has a wide range of phase transition temperature and huge enthalpy to store tremendous thermal energy . After further encapsulated with transparent fluorosilicone resin, the stabilized smart fiber exhibits excellent self-cleaning properties with water and oil repellent. Furthermore, the woven aerogel fabrics coupled with thermoelectric generator realized efficient reversible energy conversion and storage as well as solar-thermal-electrical power generation for all-weather electricity power supply, which could drive the operation of wearable electronics and car models without batteries , providing an efficient strategy for outdoor travel and lunar rover continuous operating. The smart aramid aerogel fibers and fabrics hold great promise for next generation of self-powered wearable systems.

Green and facile fabrication of smart cellulose composites assembled by graphene nanoplates for dual sensing

Liu Yixin,Liu Lin,Li Zhen,Zhao Yinan,Yao Juming

Abstract Novel, flexible, smart cellulose nanocomposite plates were fabricated by coating graphene nanoplate (GnPs) solution on the surface of cellulose sol, followed by hot pressing, in which GnPs was directly exfoliated and dispersed by PVP as exfoliating and dispersing agent. The structure, properties, and dual sensing (strain and pressure) of the resultant cellulose/GnPs nanocomposite plates (CGP) were systematically investigated. The formed conductive graphene network within the cellulose substrate, and the strong interfacial adhesion between cellulose and GnPs endowed the CGP excellent electromechanical properties, i.e. low electrical resistance (< 270 Ω cm), stable sensitivity on strain (GF 5.87) and pressure (S 0.037 kPa −1 ), good durability (> 1000 loading/unloading cycles). This work provided a green and facile approach to fabricate smart cellulose sensor responding to different external stimuli like stretch and compress by electrical resistance changes. Oxide nanomembrane induced assembly of a functional smart fiber composite with nanoporosity for an ultra-sensitive flexible glucose sensor

Zhe Zhao,Ye Kong,Xinyi Lin,Chang Liu,Jinrun Liu,Yiyun He,Lili Yang,Gaoshan Huang,Yongfeng Mei

Smart cloth, as well as smart fibers, exhibits promising prospects in wearable electronics applications. However, very few kinds of smart fibers can be applied in the biomedical-related area, and the high cost and the poor adhesion between the functional layer and textile substrate remain challenging. Here, we present an efficient strategy utilizing atomic layer deposition pretreatment to induce the growth of hydroxy double salt (HDS) nanosheets on carbon fibers, and the HDS nanosheets are then chemically converted into a zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 layer, which closely attaches to the carbon fibers, forming composite Co-containing porous smart fibers (Co-PSF). On these smart fibers, a three-dimensional (3D) functional film is assembled and intimately adheres to the surface of the fibers, forming a hierarchical nanostructure with an enhanced surface area. The corresponding increased exposure of active sites and the improved electron transfer in the composite lead to improved efficiency of the electrochemical reaction and result in excellent glucose sensing in terms of good anti-interference ability, fast response, and an ultrahigh sensitivity of 4835 μA mM−1 cm−2. Furthermore, the smart textile derived from Co-PSF shows good flexibility and stable electrochemical performance under 100 cycles of 180° bending.

Temperature-responsive and piezoresistive performances of poly(N- isopropylacrylamide)-grafted reduced graphene oxide smart fiber

Hui Ma,Huanxia Zhang,Jianda Cao,Mingqiong Tong,Jianwei Zhao,Yifei Li,Hong Xu,Wen Wu

In this work, temperature-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) was covalently grafted onto the edge of graphene oxide (GO) sheets through a facial method cross-linked by 1-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-3-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC·HCl) and N-hydroxysuccinimide in aqueous solution at room temperature. Then, the dispersion was wet spun to form a GO composite fiber . Scanning electron microscopy images suggest that severe edge distortions occur in PNIPAm-g-rGO hybrid fibers, indicating the covalent attaching of PNIPAm molecules onto the edge of graphene sheets . The PNIPAm-g-rGO fibers showed more favorable and improved electrical property than the pristine rGO fibers. Moreover, the coil-to-globule transition of the end-grafted PNIPAm chains was partially restricted by graphene sheets in the composite fiber, thereby causing the elevation of the phase transition temperature. Switching test of temperature-responsive versus electrical conductivity function has proved that the observed temperature-induced electrical conversion of the fibers was highly reversible and reproducible. Simultaneously, the composite fiber exhibited higher piezoresistive sensitivity compared with neat fiber. This smart fiber has shown remarkable potential for intelligent strain sensors, textiles, actuators, wires and on/off switches.

Mechanochromic Hydrogel Fibers with Multiple Fluorescent Colors

Bo Xu,Jin Yang,Yinghe Yang,Jiping Yang,Zhijian Wang

Mechanochromic polymers can change their color in response to external force and have shown promising applications in stress sensing and failure warning. They are usually obtained as thin films or bulky specimens. The mechanochromic fibers, which can be used to make smart fabrics, have been seldom reported due to the lack of efficient fabrication techniques. In this work, a general method using photo-polymerization of microgel solution in a template tube to produce mechanochromic hydrogel fibers is reported. The obtained hydrogel fibers can generate visible and fluorescent color changes upon deformation. The diameter of the mechanochromic fibers can be easily adjusted by using different template tubes. The mechanochromic fibers can be fabricated as long as 1 m. By reducing the fiber diameter or increasing the microgel concentration, the mechanical properties of the mechanochromic fibers can be improved, leading to more obvious mechanochromic behavior. The polymethacrylate (PMA) is further used to coat the hydrogel fibers, prevent the loss of water in the fibers, and increase the storage time. The mechanochromic fibers with multiple fluorescent colors are further fabricated by utilizing different microgel solutions. This work provides an easy and effective method to fabricate mechanochromic fibers with different color change abilities.

Hierarchical Fermat Helix-structured Electrochemical Sensing Fibers Enable Sweat Capture and Multi-biomarker Monitoring

Hang Tian,Lichao Wang,Weifeng Yang,Kerui Li,Qinghong Zhang,Yaogang Li,Hongzhi Wang,Chengyi Hou

Wearable electrochemical sensors have shown potential for personal health monitoring due to their ability to detect biofluids non-invasively at the molecular level. Smart fibers with high flexibility and comfort are currently ideal for fabricating electrochemical sensors, but little research has focused on fluid transport at the human-machine interface, which is of great significance for continuous and stable monitoring and skin comfort. Here, we report an electrochemical sensing fiber with a special core-sheath structure, whose outer layer is wound by nanofibers with a hierarchical Fermat helix structure which has excellent moisture conductivity, and the inner layer is based on CNT fibers covered by three-dimensional reduced graphene oxide folds which have good sensing properties after modification of active materials such as enzymes and selective membranes. This kind of fiber enables efficient sweat capture thus only 0.1 μL of sweat is required to activate the device, and it responses very fast (1.5 s). The fibers were further integrated into the garment to build a wireless sweat detection system, enabling stable monitoring of six physiological markers in sweat (glucose, lactate, Na+, K+, Ca2+, pH). This work provides a feasible proposal for future personalized medicine and the construction of "smart sensing garments".
