The counterions, including inorganic cations, Na+ and Cs+, and organic cation, (C2H5)4N+, influence the phase behavior and self-assembled structures of the lauric acid (LA) in water. Dissolving LA in NaOH, CsOH, and (C2H5)4NOH (tetraethylammonium hydroxide, TeAOH) solutions, respectively, we observed that the three systems totally exhibited the same phase behavior, from birefringent Lα phase/precipitates (P) → Lα phase → Lα phase/L1 (micelles) → L1. The temperature influence on phase behavior was investigated, and with an increase of temperature, we observed that less phase behavior change occurred in the systems of LA/CsOH/H2O and LA/TeAOH/H2O, while the phase behavior of the LA/NaOH/H2O system exhibited an obvious change. Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) images demonstrated that the different microstructures of Lα phase samples in the three systems existed. For the systems of LA/NaOH/H2O and LA/TeAOH/H2O, uni- and multilamellar vesicles coexist for Lα phase samples, as both the morphology and size of these vesicles are polydisperse. The curvatures of the bilayer membranes of the two systems are considered to vary from positive, zero, and even negative. However, only spherically unilamellar vesicles exist in the system of LA/CsOH/H2O, indicating that the bilayers are more rigid than those in the LA/NaOH/H2O and LA/TeAOH/H2O systems. Through the combination of the Helfrich curvature energy theory and the mass-action model, the effective bending constant K = 0.5 kBT in the LA/CsOH/H2O system was obtained, demonstrating that the unilamellar vesicles are stabilized by thermal fluctuations. A primary discussion for the effect of the nature of counterions on the stability and deformation of the vesicles is presented.

During the piezoelectric photocatalytic process, the surface curvature of the piezoelectric photocatalyst undergoes dynamic changes under the influence of external mechanical forces. However, the correlation between the surface curvature and catalytic performance remains largely unexplored. Here, we demonstrate that decreasing the radius of curvature of MoSe2 significantly enhances its piezoelectric-photocatalytic activity for C–N coupling reactions, enabling imine synthesis from benzylamine. Comprehensive characterization and DFT calculations together show that the piezoelectric effect in the curved MoSe2 structure inhibits photogenerated charge carriers from recombination, improving carrier utilization efficiency. Additionally, the surface curvature effect induced by ultrasonic driving reduces the band gap. It promotes the effective transfer of electrons from Mo atoms in MoSe2 to −NH2 in benzylamine, thereby facilitating the activation of the benzylamine molecule. As a result, the synergistic effects of the piezoelectric and curvature characteristics significantly enhance the photocatalytic performance of MoSe2 toward the C–N coupling of benzylamine. This study not only provides new insights into interfacial reaction mechanisms in piezoelectric photocatalysis but also offers a novel perspective for designing high-performance catalytic systems.

Carbon material is considered a promising electrocatalyst for the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR); especially, N-doped carbon material shows high CO Faradic efficiency (FECO) when using pyridinic N species as the active site. However, in the past decade, more efforts were focused on the preparation of various carbon nanostructures containing abundant pyridinic N species and few researchers studied the electronic structure modulation of the pyridinic N site. The curvature of the carbon substrate is an easily controllable parameter for modulating the local electronic environment of catalytic sites. In this research, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with different diameters are applied to modulate the electronic environment of pyridinic N by the curvature effect. The pyridinic N sites doped on CNTs with the average curvature of 0.04 show almost 100% FECO at the current density of 3 mA cm–2 at −0.6 V vs RHE and 91% FECO retention after 12 h test, which is superior to most of the carbon-based electrocatalysts. As demonstrated by density functional theory simulation, the pyridinic N site forms a strong local electric field around the nearby C active site and protrudes out of the curved CNT surface like a tip, which remarkably enriches the protons around the adsorbed CO2 molecule.

Structured surfaces leverage interfacial energy for directional liquid manipulation without external power, showing tremendous potential in microfluidics, green energy and biomedical applications. While the interplay of interfacial energy between solid surfaces and liquids is crucial for liquid manipulation, a systematic understanding of how the balance in liquid–solid interfacial energy affects liquid behaviors remains lacking. Here, using the curvature-ratchet surface as a generic example, we reveal the complex directional liquid dynamics inherent in the subtle regulation of liquid–solid interfacial energy. We show that curvature and tilt features regulate Laplace pressure asymmetry to enable directional, bidirectional and reverse liquid manipulation. These processes can be modulated by surface free energy and liquid surface tension, and we define their ratio as a new dimensionless number ζ to characterize the liquid–solid interfacial energy relationship. The balanced liquid control happens when ζ ∼ 1, which facilitates versatile liquid behaviors, e.g., fan-shaped spreading, gradient-induced redirection, and back-and-forth transport on various surface array arrangements, all resulting from matching structural designs with the proper ζ. Inspired by this, we showcase an innovative liquid-based information encryption technique, where the liquid displays correct information on preprogrammed surfaces only at designated ζ values. This study lays the groundwork for smart directional liquid manipulation and broadens its application domains.

This study explores the optimization of electrodes for lithium extraction from salt lake brine, particularly focusing on increasing extraction capacity by utilizing thick electrodes. However, thick electrodes present challenges such as limited diffusion of high-salinity, viscous brine to the electrode interface, resulting in uneven distribution and reduced lithium extraction efficiency. To address these challenges, a novel low-curvature porous structure electrode was designed using a freeze-drying method (FD-LFP). This design increases the effective surface area and provides more active sites for lithium storage, while also optimizing the distribution of active sites and ion diffusion paths to reduce transport resistance and lower overpotential. When evaluated for lithium extraction from simulated Atacama brine, the FD-LFP electrodes with graphite-coated paper as the current collector (FD-LFP-GCP) demonstrated superior performance, achieving a lithium extraction capacity of 40.45 mg/g, a lithium extraction areal capacity of 0.906 mg/cm 2 , and a lithium-ion purity of 92.04 % with an energy consumption of 0.422 Wh/mol. The novel design thus offers significant potential for the widespread application of electrochemical lithium extraction technology by effectively addressing the challenges associated with thick electrodes.

The decontamination performance of heterogeneous catalytic ozonation catalysts is limited due to low electron transfer between active sites and O 3 . Herein, we modulated the electronic state of metal sites by coating copper oxides on hollow carbon (CuO x -HNC) with different spherical curvatures. CuO x -HNC with larger curvature exhibited more hydroxyl radical generation and higher degradation performance of sulfamethoxazole, achieving 60 % mineralization efficiency within 90 min. Experimental and theoretical results revealed that high curvature of hollow carbon induced a shift of π-electron density from concave to convex forming electron-rich exterior surface, which strengthened orbital overlap between Cu 3d and O 2p, consequently accelerating the electron transfer from Cu to O 3 . CuO x -HNC exhibited efficient decontamination performance for pharmaceutical wastewater in a continuous-flow reactor with COD reducing from 105 mg L −1 to below 50 mg L −1 . This study offered a valuable strategy to modify the electronic structure of catalysts for efficient wastewater decontamination.

It is a challenge to study the nucleation of cavitation bubbles, which critically depends on nanoscale morphological features. Our recent advances in synthesizing colloidal negative-curvature nanoparticles (NGC-NPs) offer a rare opportunity, in comparison to the conventional studies of bulk substrates, where it is difficult to obtain consistent and well-defined surface features. In order to quantitatively assess their effects, we exploit the radical-induced color change of [Fe(SCN) 6 ] 3− , which turned out to be a more convenient method than the bending of AgNWs and the fluorescence-based methods. We show that the NGC-NPs outperform positive-curvature nanoparticles (PSC-NPs) and homogeneous nucleation, in terms of promoting cavitation. The NGC-NPs provide a higher percentage of gas–solid interface, and thus reduces the activation barrier during the critical stage of bubble nucleation. This leads a higher probability of cavitation and transforms more energy from ultrasonication to radical formation and shockwaves.

Tactile electronic skins with flexibility and good conformability have good application prospects in wearable electronics. However, pseudo-signals are generated when the electronic skin is attached to a curved surface, which affects the pressure detection performance of the electronic skin and limits its application. In this article, we developed a tactile electronic skin that compensates for curved surfaces through in situ curvature sensing and established a pressure, curvature-current model for the compensation of the curvature effect of the electronic skin. The electronic skin can compensate for the measured pressure according to the model and realizes a high-precision sensing capability. It consists of Ag/Ecoflex electrodes, pressure-sensitive materials, and a support layer. The Ag/Ecoflex electrodes with curvature sensing were prepared using screen printing and prestretching. The pressure insensitivity mechanism of the electrodes was analyzed. The effects of curvature on the measurement error of electronic skin were investigated. Experimental results suggest that Ag/Ecoflex electrodes with 80% prestretch have a 21.6/cm−1 curvature sensitivity coefficient and insensitivity to pressure at 0–200 kPa. The measurement errors introduced by curvature can be reduced by compensation. As an application, the skin is attached to the human arm for pressure measurement, through which its great potential is therefore highlighted in curved scenarios such as human prostheses, robots, and flexible airplane skins.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have shown promise as bifunctional catalysts to simultaneously mitigate shuttle effects and Li dendrite issues of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. However, the inherent low conductivity of the COFs has significantly limited their catalytic activity and stability. Herein, bifunctional catalytic activity and durability of the COF/MXene heterostructure are activated by tuning the surface curvatures of COFs interfaced with MXene. The increased curvature of COFs could induce enhanced electron delocalization and alter heterostructure geometry, which in turn strengthens lithium polysulfide adsorption, lowers energy barriers, and stabilizes catalytic sites to promote sulfur redox reactions. Concurrently, the hierarchical COF/MXene structure improves electrolyte penetration and wettability, facilitates rapid ion transport, and homogenizes the Li-ion flux distribution, thus achieving uniform lithium deposition. Consequently, the 1D-COF/MXene Li–S batteries demonstrate a high-rate capacity of 926 mA h g–1 at 4C, a stable cycling performance with a reversible capacity of 589 mA h g–1 at 3C after 500 cycles, and a high reversible capacity of 604 mA h cm–2 with a sulfur loading of 3.5 mg cm–2 under a low electrolyte-to-sulfur ratio of 10 μL mg–1. This work offers an efficacious approach to regulate catalytic activity and stability of catalysts.

Hard carbon (HC) anodes exhibiting a distinct low-potential plateau (LPP) are crucial for enhancing the energy density of sodium-ion batteries. We demonstrate that closed-pore formation is governed by carbon-layer bending, underscoring the significance of enhanced curvature. We introduce a cellulose depolymerization–reconstruction strategy that increases carbon-layer curvature and yields closed pores, thereby enabling LPP-dominated Na + storage. The resulting curvature-engineered hard carbon (H-HC) delivers a reversible capacity of 326.66 mAh g -1 at 20 mA g -1 , of which 214.38 mAh g -1 (≈ 65.6%) is attributable to the LPP. By contrast, directly carbonized HC yields a total capacity of 218.96 mAh g -1 with an LPP contribution of 135.18 mAh g -1 at the same current density. This work establishes enhanced carbon-layer curvature as a pivotal design parameter for closed-pore formation and LPP performance, offering guidance for advanced carbon anode design in SIBs.

The impact of carbon material curvature is often underestimated in studies of carbon-based electrocatalysts for the CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR). To clarify its role, we tuned the diameter of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube (NCNT) by controlling the size of embedded Ni nanoparticles (50 to 120 nm), in which the Ni-modified C-N species has been identified as an efficient site for CO 2 RR to CO. We found that the FE CO and TOF increase with the curvature of NCNT, particularly in the high potential window that is the diffusion-limited region. This enhancement is attributed to accelerated CO desorption since the electrophobic nature of high-curvature C-N defects reduces hybridization between *CO and active sites. These insights highlight curvature engineering as a promising strategy to enhance CO current density in carbon-based electrocatalysts.

Metal-free carbon catalysts have garnered significant attention since their inception. Despite substantial advancements, including widely adopted strategies such as heteroatom doping and defect engineering, their catalytic performance remains inferior to that of metal-based catalysts. In this study, we have predicted and demonstrated that the curvature of carbon plays a pivotal role in the adsorption of acetylene and the overall catalytic performance. First-principles calculations suggest that a tip-enhanced local electric field at the defect site on the curved carbon catalyst enhances the reaction kinetics for acetylene hydrochlorination. The experimental results highlight the structural advantages of the curved defect site, revealing that high-curvature defective carbon (HCDC) demonstrates an adsorption capacity for acetylene that is almost two orders of magnitude higher than that of defective carbon. Notably, HCDC achieves an acetylene conversion of up to 90% at 220 °C under a gas hourly space velocity of 300 h –1 , significantly surpassing the performance of the benchmark 0.25% Au/AC catalyst. This proof-of-concept study reveals the fundamental mechanisms driving the superior performance of carbon catalysts with curved nanostructures and presents a straightforward, environmentally friendly method for large-scale production of carbon materials with precisely controlled nanostructures. It highlights the potential for commercializing metal-free carbon catalysts in acetylene hydrochlorination and related heterogenous catalytic reactions.
