Solvent-resistant nanofiltration membranes , capable of breaking “trade-off” between permeability and selectivity while resisting physical aging, hold crucial utility in developing advanced membrane materials and reducing energy consumption associated with solvent recovery. Herein, the development of scalable, mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) was presented based on polysulfone (PSf) substrate with ultra-high permeability and aging resistance. The upper selective layer was composed of poly-trimethylsilylpropyne (PTMSP) and two types of nano-fillers, namely poly-dichloroxylene ( p -DCX) and sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate-molybdenum sulfide (SDBS-MoS 2 ). Under the influence of the additives, the redistribution of the free volume of the polymer as well as the internal spaces within additives creates additional pathways for solvent diffusion, thus increasing solvent permeance. Additionally, the combined effect of the two additives is likely to inhibit filler agglomeration and improve the overall effectiveness of the additives. Compared to pure PTMSP membranes, the p -DCX/SDBS-MoS 2 PTMSP MMMs exhibited enhanced methanol permeance (10.58 vs. 3.14 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ) and RB rejection (99.23 vs. 96.13 %), which greatly exceeded that of current OSN MMMs. As anticipated, aging of the prepared membranes decelerated with the addition of the additives, and the methanol permeation loss rate decreased from 50.32 % to 13.23 % after 300 h. Molecular dynamics simulations explored by structural analysis revealed the mechanism for the significant improvement in methanol permeance and aging resistance. The membranes obtained were found to be highly industrially applicable, thereby offering the potential to reduce operation costs in energy-intensive separation processes.

It is necessary to prepare a nanofiltration membrane with high permeation flux that can be used in the field of organic solvents. Gel membranes have a high solvent permeation flux, but their chained macromolecular structure is often unstable. In this study, tannic acid-bridged sodium alginate (TA x -Ca/FeSA) organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes were prepared by the phase transition method using aqueous Ca 2+ and Fe 3+ solutions as cross-linking agents. TA can interact with SA through hydrogen bonding hydrophobic bonding and other interactions to form an interpenetrating three-dimensional network structure. Compared with Ca/FeSA membrane, the average pore size of TA 0.125 -Ca/FeSA membrane was reduced from 1.03 nm to 0.74 nm, and the porosity was increased from 47.62 to 59.2 %. In addition, the TA 0.125 -Ca/FeSA membrane has the characteristics of a negative charge, super hydrophilicity, and high mechanical properties, exhibits a high permeation flux of 48.97 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 with a rejection of 96.25 % for Congo red ethanol solution, has excellent solvent resistance, stain resistance, and self-cleaning ability. The TA 0.125 -Ca/FeSA membrane was demonstrated to have great potential for application in the fields of purification and solvent recovery.

Aromatic poly(m-phenyleneisophthalamide) (PMIA) and the metal-organic framework (MOF) MIL-53(Al) were employed as the polymer matrix and additive, respectively, to develop mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) via non-solvent induced phase separation for potential application in organic solvent nanofiltration. The prepared membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and water contact angle measurements. The membrane water permeance enhanced when MIL-53(Al) was incorporated into the membrane structure while the rejection had no significant change. The optimum MMM (with 0.5 wt% MOF concentration) passes mono and bivalent inorganic salts but rejects larger charged organic molecules and has a mean effective pore size of 0.7 nm. The influence of organic solvents on MMM performance was also investigated and the result shows that the performance shifts towards a lower pure water permeance and a higher rejection after exposure to organic solvents (ethyl acetate or methanol). The membrane performance in organic solvent nanofiltration was evaluated on the basis of the permeance and rejection of brilliant blue G in ethanol, and the result showed that the permeance of MMMs significantly increased (by 289%) while the rejection slightly reduced by 4% in contrast to the pure membrane.

For thin-film composite (TFC) membranes applied in organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN), enhancing the adhesion between the active layers and the substrates can effectively improve the stability of the membranes. In this work, TFC OSN membranes with polyetherketone bearing amino group (PEK-NH 2 ) asymmetric substrates and amino-contained polyarylate active layers were fabricated by interfacial polymerization technique, and subsequently reacted with dialdehydes to form crosslinking between and within the substrates and the active layers. Crosslinking improved both of the solvent resistance of the substrates and the separation selectivity of the active layers. In addition, reverse pressure testing demonstrated that crosslinking allowed the active layers to adhere more strongly to the substrates. The optimized integrally crosslinked membranes exhibited methanol permeance of 10.4 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 and a molecular weight cut-off of about 320 g mol −1 in methanol. Moreover, the integrally crosslinked membranes maintained good stability for OSN operation in methanol for 12 days, and also exhibited unchanged OSN performance after soaked in N,N -dimethylformamide for 2 days. This work demonstrated a novel solvent-resistant membrane material and membrane-fabrication strategy with prospect for OSN application.

Organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) as a high-efficient membrane separation technology has play an important role in chemical industrial separation, clean energy production, and high-value resources recycling, etc. Inspired by the asymmetric biological structure of Desert beetle, herein a novel kind of polymeric OSN membranes with asymmetric structure have been fabricated via fluorinated polymeric networks (FPNs) regulated interfacial polymerization. The FPNs were formed with m-phenylenediamine (MPD), dopamine (DA) and 1H,1H,2H,2H-Perfluorodecane-thiol (PFDT) via the Michael addition and Schiff-base reaction. The FPNs tailored thin-film composite membrane (FPN-TFC) with biomimetic asymmetric structure, e.g., much hydrophilic looser front surface and much hydrophobic denser rear surface, exhibits an optimum ethanol permeance ~15.7 L m −2 h −1 .MPa −1 and high rejection ~99.5% for Rose Bengal (RB) dye molecules (test with 0.05 g L −1 RB ethanol solution at 25 °C under 1.5 MPa), which is almost 6 times higher than that of the conventional TFC membranes. Moreover, there is a good stability for the FPN-TFC membrane tested with different polar solvents in long-term operation process. Therefore, this work provides a guidance for the development of advanced polymeric OSN membranes with both high solvent permeability and solute selectivity, as well as good stability in OSN process, which would have broad application prospects in chemical and other industrial fields.

The integration of high permeability and exceptional selectivity, thereby overcoming the conventional “trade-off” effect, remains a persistent challenge for the practical implementation of organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes. Herein, at the molecular level of design, we utilized the 5,5′-diamino-2,2′-biphenol (amino-BIPOL) and diacyl chloride as IP monomers to prepare OSN membranes with high perm-selectivity. The amino-BIPOL, a contorted biphenol molecule with four reactive sites, serves as a molecular-level unit to hinder efficient packing of polymer chains and induce the formation of interconnected micropores in the resulting polyesteramide layers. By employing diacyl chloride terephthaloyl dichloride (TPC) and isophthaloyl dichloride (IPC) as the oil-phase cross-linker, two kinds of TFC membranes were prepared. The resulting membranes both present smooth surface morphology, with ultrathin and high microporous selective layer allowing for efficient mass transfer. Specifically, the methanol permeance of amino-BIPOL/TPC and amino-BIPOL/IPC membrane reaches up to 15.1 and 15.6 LMH/bar, while maintaining a molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) value of 300 and 373 Da, respectively. Overall, this work illustrates the different oil-phase cross-linkers will result in diverse nanofilm microstructure and thus with distinct perm-selectivity properties, offering new insights for the design and modification of advanced OSN membranes.

Molecular separations involving organic liquid phases, such as organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) and pervaporation (PV), demand robust membrane materials with excellent stability in aggressive organic solvents of a wide pH range. Porous crystalline framework materials, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), have emerged as promising membrane materials for such separations due to their uniform and tunable pore sizes and high stability in organic solvents. However, the impact of membrane thickness on separation efficiency has rarely been reported. PCN-250 is a type of MOF exhibiting suitable pore size, excellent stability, and facile membrane-forming ability. Herein, we fabricated polycrystalline PCN-250 membranes of different membrane thicknesses and studied their impact on OSN and PV performance. The two membranes, PCN-250-s and PCN-250-t, were fabricated through secondary and tertiary growth, respectively. With robustness in organic solvents containing acid, PCN-250-s membrane exhibited good OSN performance, with rejections of 97.2–99.2 % to methyl blue (799 Da) in ethanol. Meanwhile, PCN-250-t membrane demonstrated 1600 h continuous PV working ability in dehydrating acidic water/ethanol (10/90 wt%) mixtures containing 5 wt% acetic acid, exhibiting a total flux of 4.42 kg m −2 h −1 and a water/ethanol (5/95 wt%) separation factor of 591. Our study unveils the influence of membrane thickness on organic liquid separation, suggesting that broadened applications of polycrystalline MOF membranes can be achieved simply by adjusting the crystal growth methods and relevant membrane fabrication procedures.

Preparation of highly permeable and selective organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes is desired for precise chemical separations. Although the emerging nanomaterials and novel preparation methods have significantly boosted the membrane performance, it still requires much effort to drive them toward scale-up production with lower cost and easier preparation process. Herein, we constructed a polyarylate membrane from one kind of porous organic cage, namely Noria through traditional interfacial polymerization technique. Under the catalysis of triethylamine, Noria in aqueous phase would react with terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) in hexane to form a dense nano-film. The inner cavity of Noria molecule provided nano-channel for both polar and non-polar solvents to transport through the membrane. Specially, the Noria + TPC membrane exhibits a high permeance for methanol up to 18 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 . This is resulted from the low interaction energy between methanol and Noria as revealed by the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. In addition to the excellent performance, the simple preparation process with low-cost materials suggests the great potential of Noria + TPC membrane for practical application. Moreover, it would inspire the exploration of other molecules with tailored chemical structures for the assembly of high-performance membranes in future.

Herein, a mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) coating layer has been first explored as a separating layer for organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN). A PDA based separating layer was constructed on polyimide (PI) support via dopamine coating. The subsequent membrane was then treated with 1,6-hexanediamine for cross-linking on both the PDA layer and PI support. Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron (XPS) results indicated the deposition of PDA on support and the cross-linked structures of both PDA and PI. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), water contact angle, and surface energy measurements were further employed to characterize the morphologies and surface properties of the composite membranes. After an optimized coating time of 4 h, the resultant membrane showed an EtOH permeance of 0.91 L m–2 h–1 bar–1 and a RB rejection of 99%. More importantly, the composite membrane also exhibited good performance for dyes separation from a wide range of solvents including challenging polar aprotic and strongly swelling solvents, such as dimethylformamide and acetone. In addition to demonstrating a facile and effective OSN membrane fabrication approach, this study may stimulate the bioinspired design of a composite membrane for sustainable applications.

The organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes are an attractive candidate that enable carbon-neutral nature in both isolation and purification process. However, the application of current commercial available OSN membranes is severely hindered by their inferior permeability and selectivity. Here, using poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) as support, a thin film composite (TFC) membrane with remarkably high permeability and ideal selectivity is fabricated in an industrial-scale manufacturing line and the relevant spiral-would module is successfully prepared. Optimization by the solvent activated, the TFC membrane with an extraordinary solvent permeation for acetone, methanol and acetonitrile are 63, 41 and 38 L m −2 h −1 ∙bar −1 , respectively. The nanofiltration performance of A-TFC membrane supports out-performs: at similar rejection (100%) the methanol and acetonitrile permeance increased dramatically at 10 and 5 times than current commercial OSN membranes, respectively. The spiral-would module is carried out in methanol and acetonitrile RB (1017 g mol −1 ) solution, which displays a high permeate fluxes and stable separation performances, methanol: 112 GPD, 98%; acetonitrile: 99 GPD, 99.3%. This work provided a large-scale facile process for high-performance PMIA based OSN membrane, and the fabrication of spiral-would module, which should be promising for manufacture of solvent-resistant TFC membrane in industrial scale-up.

As an emerging membrane separation technology, organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) has shown great application potential in the field of pharmaceutical and chemical industries referring to organic media. Herein, we prepared a novel microporous thin-film composite (TFC) OSN membrane with superior perm-selective performances, which was fabricated by applying 4,4′,4″-trihydroxytriphenylmethane (Tris-Phenol) to react with trimesoyl chloride (TMC) by interfacial polymerization (IP) technique. The rigid, non-planar and multifunctional nature of Tris-Phenol endowed the polyarylate nanofilm with enhanced microporosity. Of note, the prepared composite membrane showed good selectivity to small organic solutes with molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) as low as ∼295 Da, meanwhile had medium methanol permeance up to 5.86 LMH/bar, by the help of surfactant dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloridea (DTAC) during the IP reaction. The experiments showed that the Tris-Phenol membrane exhibited extraordinary long-term operation stability. In addition, the Tris-Phenol membrane could achieve separation of solutes with similar molecular weights but different charges. This research well illustrated the novel IP monomer design strategy to fabricate new TFC OSN membrane with high perm-selectivity.

Construction of well-confined sub-nanochannels for molecular-sieving in organic solvent environment remains a challenge for organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes in precise fluid separation. Herein, cyclodextrin (CD) cross-linked 2D Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene membranes with laminar nanostructure containing unique sub-nanoscale mass transfer channels for unprecedented OSN performance is reported. Density-functional theory (DFT) calculation and experimental results confirm that CD monomers (α-, β-, γ-) with 3D intrinsic cavity structures are anchored with Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets forming a stable polyester cross-linking network via an interfacial molecular engineering using trimesoyl chloride (TMC). The prepared membranes exhibit ultrahigh OSN performance with excellent stability in organic solvents. The optimal membrane can effectively reject dyes such as methylene blue (99.8%), rhodamine B (98.0%), and Congo Red (100%), while having high ethanol permeability ranging from 22.58 to 85.31 L/(m 2 h bar). Remarkably, the membrane structure remained intact after 4 weeks immersion in ethanol and acetone. This work provides a facile and reliable strategy to construct a high-performance 2D material-based OSN membrane with well-confined mass transfer channels.
