Effective proton conducting sites and establishing proton channels are two critical factors in developing high-performance proton exchange membranes. This study first establishes a strategy in designing effective proton conducting channels for Nafion by using solution blowing of sulfonated polyethersulfone (SPES) nanofibers containing CC3, which is an emerging porous organic cage that possesses the advantages of dissolvable organic solvents and high proton conduction from its interconnected three-dimensional pore structure. Our strategy results in SPES nanofiber networks with CC3 uniformly involved in and composite membranes with Nafion-filled interfiber voids. Benefiting from such structural features, the composite membrane exhibits high proton conductivity (0.315 S cm −1 at 80°C and 100% RH), low methanol permeability (0.69 × 10 −7 cm 2 S −1 ), excellent water absorption, thermal and dimensional stability, and single-cell performance. This study provides not only a valuable reference for the application of CC3 but also a new idea for establishment of proton transfer channels.

The development of novel systems for the polyoxometalate–organic cage (POC) is an attractive research field for their fascinating topological structures and well-defined functional cavities. Here, we report the successful self-assembly of anionic POC architectures {XW9Ni6L3}4 (X = Si or P and L = p-aminobenzoic acid), comprising Ni6-substituted trivacant lacunary polyoxometalate (POM) and the organic ligand with both rigid COOH and flexible coordination NH2 groups. It is worth noting a Keggin {XW12} (X = Si or P) in the interior cavity, which is not encountered in reported POCs. More remarkably, in the cage architecture, the chiral C3 conformation was generated based on asymmetric coordination arrangement of ligands, which results in the deviation of the polyhedra and the helical arrangement of the ligands and finally constitutes the hierarchical chirality of the {POM4L12} cages. The solution stability, magnetic behavior, and dye adsorption of {SiW12}@{SiW9Ni6L3}4 have also been investigated.

Organic cages with long-wavelength emission and ratiometric signal are pivotal but still challenging for their sensing application. Probes often suffer from single signal and poor water solubility, which are detrimental to hypochlorous acid (HClO) sensing in aqueous solution. Here, we report the fabrication of organic cages with long-wavelength dual emission for ratiometric fluorescent sensing of HClO. The nanosized organic cages (OCs-1 and OCs-2, derived from the reaction of 1,3,5-tris(aminomethyl)benzene) and 2- or 4-hydroxyisophthalaldehyde) showed robust stability across varying pH. Both OCs-1 and OCs-2 exhibited pH-responsive dual emission attributed to hydroxy-1,3-diiminobenzene group, facilitated by the enol-keto tautomerism and constrained molecular motion within the capsule topological structure. Owing to the redox reaction between imine bond of OCs-2 and HClO, the dismantling of cage-like structure led to significant quenching of emission at 620 nm and enhancement of emission at 500 nm. Based on the ratiometric signal of OCs-2, a highly effective sensing method for HClO was established. The proposed method gave the linearity range of 0.5–3 μM, the limit of detection (3 s ) of 4 nM, and remarkable precision with the relative standard deviation of 0.58 % for 10 replicate determinations of 1.5 μM HClO. The recoveries of spiked HClO in domestic water and disinfectant samples ranged from 94.09 % to 104.24 %.

Membrane separation technology has garnered significant attention for CO2 separation and purification, with mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) emerging as promising candidates due to their advantages of ease of processing, high mechanical strength, and thermal stability. The development of effective fillers for separation performance becomes one of the key foci in this area. In this work, CC3, a type of porous organic cages (POCs), was synthesized and functionalized with two amino-containing materials of different chain lengths. Polyethylenimine (PEI) and diethylenetriamine were used as modification agents to successfully graft amino groups onto the CC3 crystals to form defect-free Pebax mixed matrix membranes containing amino-functionalized CC3. The special porous structure of CC3 increases the gas permeability of the mixed matrix membrane by providing extra channels for the transportation of CO2. Besides, amino groups on functionalized CC3 interact with the chains of Pebax through hydrogen bonding, thus improving the compatibility between filler and matrix. The amino groups can further facilitate the transport of gases across the membrane through reversible reactions with CO2, which is further enhanced under humid conditions. Under optimal conditions, at 1 bar and 30 °C, the CO2 permeability of Pebax/PEI@CC3-MMMs was 342.33 Barrer with a selectivity of 33.38, while Pebax/DETA@CC3-MMMs exhibited a CO2 permeability of 273.34 Barrer and a selectivity of 35.77. This work demonstrates that amino-functionalized POCs (CC3) can effectively enhance the CO2 permeability and the CO2/N2 selectivity, which may provide a way to develop high-performance mixed matrix membranes with superior separation properties.

The accurate and sensitive quantification of hydroxyl radical (·OH) and glucose is necessary for disease diagnosis and health guidance, but still challenging owing to the low concentration of ·OH and poor water solubility of fluorescent probes. In addition, fluorescent probes may cause secondary pollution to the environment. Here an organic cage was reported as a sensitive fluorescent probe for ·OH and glucose in aqueous solution without serious secondary pollution. The prepared organic cage with good water solubility showed specific redox affinity to ·OH in acidic condition, resulting in two oxidation stages of mild oxidation and subsequent oxidative degradation. Fluorescence around 485 nm enhanced remarkably in the first stage, and benzene ring in organic cage was degraded in the second stage. Based on the significant fluorescence enhancement, a sensitive fluorescence turn-on sensing method for ·OH was established within 90 s with the limit of detection (3 s/k , where s and k are the standard deviation for 10 replicate detections of blank and the slope of calibration function) of 5 nM. The recoveries of spiked ·OH in human serum and water samples ranged from 95.2 % to 102.7 %. After the glucose oxidase enzyme-Fenton reaction was involved, the ·OH detection was also applied to sensitive sensing of glucose with the limit of detection (3 s/k ) of 6 nM. The recoveries of spiked glucose in sugary drinks ranged from 96.2 % to 102.6 %. Furthermore, the proposed method would also be suitable for other hazardous substances and biomarkers which can produce hydrogen peroxide and further form ·OH via Fenton reaction.

Porous organic cages (POCs) are a new class of advanced porous molecular materials, which are self-assembled from discrete, shape-persistent, cage-like molecules through relatively weak intermolecular forces. POCs have recently received extensive interest in diverse fields due to their noteworthy features of good solubility, unique pore structure, high stability, tunable pore size and volume, and so on. In this study, we report a [3 + 6] prismatic homochiral POC (NC1-R) as the stationary phase for preparing a capillary gas chromatographic (GC) column by a static coating method. Various types of mixtures have been well separated on the coated column, involving n -alkanes, n -alcohols, alkylbenzenes, positional isomers, structural isomers, and cis- / trans -isomers. Most importantly, the column also exhibits excellent chiral resolution capability for racemates. Twenty-three racemates, including alcohols, epoxides, esters, lactones, ethers, amino acid derivatives, amines, and sulfoxides, have been well resolved on the column. Among these racemates, about half (11 of the 23) could not be resolved on a commercial β-DEX 120 column (per- O -methylated β-cyclodextrin-based column), suggesting the advantageous performance of the present column. Furthermore, the fabricated column shows good reproducibility in terms of the retention times of analytes, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) in the ranges 0.02–0.19 %, 0.12–0.36 %, and 0.41–0.59 % for intra-day ( n = 6), inter-day ( n = 6), and column-to-column ( n = 3), respectively, and good thermal stability at least up to 300 °C. This work demonstrates the good application prospects of NC1-R for GC separations, especially for GC enantioseparations.

Fabricating loose membranes with well-tailored porosity for effective molecular separations remains challenging. Here, we introduce RCC3, a soluble porous organic cage (POC), as an amine monomer to fabricate polyamide (PA) membrane with loose structure via interfacial polymerization and evaluate the membrane performance in dye/salt separation. RCC3 is a [4 + 6] amine molecular cage with ideal stability and sub-nanometer macrocyclic cavity (∼7 Å). The intrinsic porosity and large interchain pores formed by its participation in interfacial polymerization provide extra transport channels in membrane and contribute to realizing precise aperture sieving with high permeation flux. Meanwhile, the unique structure of RCC3 (molecular-level size, organic framework and rich –NH– groups) helps to achieve molecular-level mixing between polymer chains and individual caged molecules in the membrane, thus overcoming the problem of interfacial defects. Under the condition of optimal RCC3/PIP mass ratio, the as-prepared membrane exhibited favorable water permeability of 52.55 LMH/bar (5.2 times of PIP/TMC membrane) with good dye rejection (98.6% for MEB) and salt permeability. Due to the extremely low surface roughness (Ra = 12.5 nm), the membrane exhibited outstanding anti-fouling capacity with high and stable flux recovery rate. Furthermore, the membrane possessed excellent long-term stability, which underlined the promising potential in practical application.

Molecular organic cage compounds have attracted considerable attention due to their potential applications in gas storage, catalysis, chemical sensing, molecular separations, etc. In this study, a homochiral pentyl cage compound was synthesized from a condensation reaction of (S,S)-1,2-pentyl-1,2-diaminoethane and 1,3,5-triformylbenzene. The imine-linked pentyl cage diluted with a polysiloxane (OV-1701) was explored as a novel stationary phase for high-resolution gas chromatographic separation of organic compounds. Some positional isomers were baseline separated on the pentyl cage-coated capillary column. In particular, various types of enantiomers including chiral alcohols, esters, ethers and epoxides can be resolved without derivatization on the pentyl cage-coated capillary column. The reproducibility of the pentyl cage-coated capillary column for separation was investigated using nitrochlorobenzene and styrene oxide as analytes. The results indicate that the column has good stability and separation reproducibility after being repeatedly used. This work demonstrates that molecular organic cage compounds could become a novel class of chiral separation media in the near future. Keywords:porous organic cage;capillary column;chiral stationary phase;chiral separation;gas chromatography

Chiral metal-organic cages (MOCs) are a new type of porous materials with unique molecular recognition ability, which have received research attention as a chiral stationary phase (CSP) for gas chromatography (GC). Herein, we report the detailed investigation of a chiral MOC ([Cu 12 (L PA ) 12 (H 2 O) 12 ], PA = L-phenylalanine, MOC-PA) as a novel stationary phase for GC separations. The MOC-PA capillary column exhibited a high-resolution performance for a wide range of analytes, including n-alkanes, n-alcohols, esters, aromatic compounds and the Grob mixture, positional isomers and racemates. In particular, MOC-PA coated column displayed good resolution and performance for amino acid derivatives. Moreover, the MOC-PA column showed excellent separation repeatability and reproducibility. The relative standard deviation (RSD) values for the retention times were in the range of 0.16-0.30% for run to run ( n = 3), 0.31-0.77% for day-to-day ( n = 3), and 3.6-4.7% for column-to-column ( n = 3), respectively. The experimental results showed that MOC-PA had great potential as a GC stationary phase.

A new method based on the enantioselective recognition of porous organic cages CC3-R was established for the first time. Porous organic cages are widely used for separation, adsorption and host–guest interaction sensing, but are rarely used for fluorescence sensing. Based on the inherent chiral environment of CC3-R and the inherent fluorescence properties of the organic ligands constituting the cage, when different chiral monomers diffuse into the cage, different effects occur to produce changes in fluorescence. We found for the first time that the fluorescence of CC3-R can be enhanced and quenched by tyrosine and mandelic acid, respectively, and that different chiral monomers are enhanced or quenched differently at the same concentration. Unlike the chiral recognition of other composite luminescent materials, the chiral porous organic cage not only utilizes its own host–guest effect for chiral recognition, but also utilizes the organic ligands constituting the cage for luminescence recognition. This work provides an alternative method to accomplish chiral recognition other than chromatography, that is using porous organic cages (POC), but it can show the advantages of simplicity, low cost and high sensitivity. We believe this work could provide valuable thoughts in the exploration of POC in chiral recognition as new FL probes for the future.

Preparation of highly permeable and selective organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes is desired for precise chemical separations. Although the emerging nanomaterials and novel preparation methods have significantly boosted the membrane performance, it still requires much effort to drive them toward scale-up production with lower cost and easier preparation process. Herein, we constructed a polyarylate membrane from one kind of porous organic cage, namely Noria through traditional interfacial polymerization technique. Under the catalysis of triethylamine, Noria in aqueous phase would react with terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) in hexane to form a dense nano-film. The inner cavity of Noria molecule provided nano-channel for both polar and non-polar solvents to transport through the membrane. Specially, the Noria + TPC membrane exhibits a high permeance for methanol up to 18 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 . This is resulted from the low interaction energy between methanol and Noria as revealed by the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. In addition to the excellent performance, the simple preparation process with low-cost materials suggests the great potential of Noria + TPC membrane for practical application. Moreover, it would inspire the exploration of other molecules with tailored chemical structures for the assembly of high-performance membranes in future.

For the first time, an amorphous solid contains large cationic M 12 L 24 metal–organic cage (MOC) based on Pd(II) and 3,5-di-pyridin-4-yl-benzaldehyde ( L ), namely a MOC-1 , was constructed and characterized. Although it is an amorphous structure, regular cavity that created by MOC still exists in the solid and performs excellent dye adsorption and separation ability in water. The a MOC-1 can rapidly adsorb the anionic dyes including methyl orange (MO), fluorescein disodium salt (FS), acid fuchsin (AF) and methyl blue (MB) only in several minutes to about 30 min. The adsorption capacities for them are 359, 464, 116 and 150 mg/g, respectively. On the contrary, the adsorption rate of a MOC-1 towards cationic dyes is significantly slower than that of anionic dyes. The adsorption of cationic dyes shows a size-selectively behavior, in which the adsorption of rhodamine B (RhB) is more favorable than the other selected smaller or bigger cationic dyes. The adsorption capacity of RhB is up to 454 mg/g. According to the differences in the adsorption rates and capacities for different charged dyes, a MOC-1 displays diverse dye separation behaviors. It can selectively adsorb RhB from a mixed solution of MLB and RhB by size selectivity. Moreover, the selective separation of anionic and cationic dyes shows an interesting new time-dependence mode that the anionic dye can be selectively adsorbed from a mixed solution of anionic and cationic dyes by controlling the adsorption time. The good adsorption and separation performance of a MOC-1 is caused by the large cavity and the high positive Zeta potential of the material, which are created by the Pd 12 L 24 metal-organic cages.
