Wettability is an important surface property that deserves to further explore the factors on its alteration. Series of bis -N-heterocyclic quaternary ammonium salts with different spacer length and N-heterocyclic headgroups (morpholinium (BMMB, BMMD and BMMH), piperidinium (BPMH) and piperazinium (BMPMH)) have been synthesized and employed for altering the wettability of vermiculite and its derivates (Vts) treated by Li + -saturated heating method. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TG-DTG), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and N 2 adsorption/desorption isotherms indicate that all of the bis -N-heterocyclic quaternary ammonium salts have been successfully inserted into the vermiculite layers, leading to the organic monolayer. The results of capillary rise tests combined with Lipophilic to Hydrophilic Ratio ( LHR ) values unveil the wettability alteration of the organo-Vts. As the layer charge decreases, the hydrophilicity of the organo-Vts gradually increases, which is probably caused by the decline in binding sites. As the result of the change in spacer length of modifier, the wetting properties of morpholinium-based organo-Vts change in order of BMMD-Vts > BMMH-Vts > BMMB-Vts, and difference in N-heterocyclic headgroups leads to the sequence of wettability: BMPMH-Vts > BPMH-Vts > BMMH-Vts. Layer charge of Vt, spacer length and the type of the N-heterocyclic headgroup of modifier have the synergistic effect on the regulation of the wettability.

A multifunctional polyethyleneimine-graphene oxide/organo-vermiculite composite (PGO/OVt) was successfully fabricated by introducing OVt (modified by dodecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, 1227) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) onto GO. For PGO/OVt, the proportion of GO was 25%, while OVt accounted for 75%, which can not only effectively reduce the cost of GO-doped adsorbents, but also ensure a high adsorption efficiency. Various analyses, including FT-IR, XPS, AFM, SEM, TEM, TG-DTG, and XRD were used to characterize the structures and surfaces of PGO/OVt. The surface properties of graphene oxide (GO), the hydrophobicity of OVt, and abundant amino functional groups in polyethyleneimine made PGO/OVt an excellent, versatile adsorbent of Congo Red (CR) and Acid Red 1 (AR-1) in single and binary-dyes system. In single-dye systems, due to the existence of hydrogen bonding, π-π, hydrophobic, and electrostatic interactions between adsorbent and dyes, PGO/OVt exhibited excellent adsorption capacities of 570 mg/g and 365 mg/g for CR and AR-1, respectively. The adsorption processes were well described by pseudo-second-order kinetics ( R 2 > 0.99) and the Langmuir isotherm model ( R 2 > 0.98). The thermodynamic parameters demonstrated that the adsorption processes were nonspontaneous and endothermic. In the binary-dyes system, the maximum adsorption amount of CR was 491 mg/g, and that of AR-1 was 384 mg/g. The influence intensity factor ( φ ) revealed that the effect between the two components changed from competition to synergy with the variation of initial concentration. The synergistic effect indicated the possible presence of a π-π stacking effect between the molecules of adsorbed and dissociative dyes. Based on the obtained results, the resulting PGO/OVt was an efficient, and a lower cost adsorbent containing GO (GO-doped adsorbent). This work provided a reference for the development of GO composite adsorbents.

Organo-vermiculites (organo-Vts) functionalized by emerging bis -morpholinium gemini surfactants (C n Mor + -4-Mor + C n 2Br − , n = 8, 12, 16, corresponding to BMOB, BMDB and BMHB, respectively) are prepared and used for disposing the dyeing wastewater for the first time. Several characterization methods are employed for exploring the structure and wettability of the organo-Vts. The results show that the modifiers have been loaded onto the vermiculite (Vt) successfully with the paraffin type arrangements, enhancing the hydrophobicity of organo-Vts. The adsorption of methyl orange/acid green 25 (MO/AG25) on BMOB-Vt, BMDB-Vt and BMHB-Vt reaches experimental maximum adsorption capacity of 108.68/67.38, 159.11/135.40 and 206.65/161.13 mg/g within 120 min at 25 °C, respectively. The adsorption of MO and AG25 is better fitted by pseudo-second-order kinetic, Freundlich and Langmuir models. As the results of thermodynamics, the adsorption processes of MO/AG25 on organo-Vts are exothermic and spontaneous, except for that of AG25 on BMOB-Vt showing an endothermic process. It is noteworthy that the more the hydrophobicity of adsorbent, the smaller the structure of dyes, the greater the adsorption capacities of organo-Vts. Combining with the results of adsorption and characterizations, it can be confirmed that: (i) the hydrophobic interaction works as the mainly driven force in adsorption of MO/AG25; (ii) the π-π stacking takes part into the adsorption of MO due to its smaller molecular structure; (iii) the electrostatic interaction takes a synergistic effect. In binary-dyes system, MO and AG25 show a competitive adsorption on organo-Vts, and MO is less affected than AG25.

In this study, we introduce a novel series of gemini surfactants with amide groups (HDAB, HDAHD, and HDAPX) and use these surfactants to decorate sodium vermiculite (Na-Vt) for the adsorption of Ibuprofen (IBP) from wastewater. Exceptional IBP uptake on organo-vermiculites (organo-Vts) is obtained, with maximum adsorption capacities reaching 249.87, 342.21, and 460.15 mg/g for HDAB-Vt, HDAHD-Vt, and HDAPX-Vt (C0 = 500 mg/L, modifier dosage = 0.2 CEC), respectively. The adsorption of IBP is well fitted by pseudo-second-order, intraparticle diffusion, and Freundlich isotherm models, verifying chemical adsorption processes with multilayer arrangement of IBP in organo-Vts. Thermodynamically, the removal of IBP on HDAHD-Vt is exothermic, while the endothermic nature aptly describes the adsorption process of HDAB-Vt and HDAPX-Vt. Moreover, organo-Vts can be stably regenerated in three cycles. Outstanding adsorption performance of organo-Vts is attributed to synergistic effects of the partition process and functional interaction, which are influenced by the steric hindrance and chain configuration of the modifier. A combined evaluation of adsorption tests and fitting calculations is employed to reveal the adsorption mechanism: (i) the incorporation of amides into the alkyl chain significantly enhances the utilization of the interlayer space in organo-Vts. (ii) Smaller steric hindrance and higher rigidity of the modifier spacer contribute to improved adsorption performance. The findings in this study rekindle interest in Vt-based adsorbents, which demonstrate comparable potential to other emerging adsorbents that are yet to be fully explored.
