Influences of Hydrosoluble and Lipophilic Rhizodeposits on Pyrene Sorption in Soil

Jing Wei,Xiaoyan Liu,Xinying Zhang,Chuanhua Wang,Xueping Chen,Xia Liang,Yunyun Hou,Hongbing Li

Plants change the behavior of pollutants in soil by rhizodeposition in the process of physiochemistry. The effects of hydrosoluble and lipophilic extracts from celery rhizodeposits on pyrene sorption were investigated. The Freundlich sorption coefficient of pyrene decreased from 1143 mg kg −1 in the bulk treatment to 670, 795, and 1030 mg kg −1 in treatments with lipophilic + hydrosoluble, hydrosoluble, and lipophilic extracts, respectively. Although both hydrosoluble and lipophilic extracts inhibited pyrene sorption, they acted at different processes on soil organic matters (SOMs) and dissolved organic matters (DOMs). The analysis of three-dimensional fluorescence excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy revealed that the intensity of soluble humic-like substances increased from 5.73 in the bulk treatment to 7.74, 6.36, and 8.67 in treatments with hydrosoluble, lipophilic and hydrosoluble + lipophilic components, respectively. Images of DOMs by atomic force microscopy illustrated that the hydrosoluble extract greatly expanded the DOMs particles, while the lipophilic slightly shrank them. Moreover, the lipophilic extract dramatically softened SOMs with the glassy transition temperature declining from 50.6 ± 0.5 to 29.7 ± 2.0°C. These results not only provide insights into the mechanisms involved in pyrene sorption but also help us understand how rhizodeposition affects the pyrene bioaccessibility to some extent.

Ofloxacin sorption in soils after long-term tillage: The contribution of organic and mineral compositions

Dandan Zhou,Bingfa Chen,Min Wu,Ni Liang,Di Zhang,Hao Li,Bo Pan

Intensive human activities in agricultural areas resulted in significant alteration of soil properties, which consequently change their interactions with various contaminants. This process needs to be incorporated in contaminant behavior prediction and their risk assessment. However, the relevant study is missing. This work was designed to examine the change of soil properties and ofloxacin (OFL) sorption after tillage. Soil samples were collected in Yuanyang, Mengzi, and Dianchi areas with different agricultural activities. Although the mineral compositions of soils from Yuanyang and Dianchi differed greatly, these compositions are similar after tillage, especially for paddy soils . Soil pH decreased generally after OFL sorption, suggesting that ion exchange of OFL with protons in soil organic matter (SOM) was important for OFL sorption. However, a positive relationship between SOM and OFL sorption was not observed. On the contrary, increased SOM decreased OFL sorption when soils from the same geological location were compared. Generally speaking, tillage activities or dense vegetations greatly decreased OFL sorption. The higher OFL sorption in B horizon than A horizon suggested limited leaching of OFL through soil columns. The summed sorption calculated based on the sorption of individual soil components and their percentages in soils was higher than the intact soil. This phenomenon may be understood from the interactions between soil components, such as the coating of SOM on mineral particles. This study emphasizes that soil should be treat as a dynamic environmental matrix when assessing antibiotic behaviors and risks, especially in the area with intense human activities.

Stability of organic matter-iron-phosphate associations during abiotic reduction of iron

ShuaiLong Wen,YueHan Lu,JiaRu Dai,XiuLin Huang,ShiLin An,JingJing Liu,ZhengWen Liu,YingXun Du,YunLin Zhang

The stability of organic matter-iron-phosphate (OM-Fe-P) association has an important impact on the migration and sequestration of organic carbon (OC) and P in the environment. Here, we examined the release characteristics of Fe, P and OM due to the abiotic reduction of OM-Fe-P associations by Na-dithionite. The associations were synthesized with algae-derived OM (AOM) and terrestrial humic acid (HA) through either adsorption onto iron (hydr)oxide or coprecipitation with Fe(III). Results indicated that OM and P adsorbed onto the associations were rapidly released, whereas coprecipitation yielded much lower release rates of Fe, P, and OM. The stronger inhibitory effect on reduction from coprecipitation can be explained by larger particles formed by coprecipitation and coprecipitation taking up more OC that had a passivation effect on the associations. The release rates of OM and P were lower in coprecipitates formed with HA than formed with AOM for a given OC/Fe ratio. This observation can be attributed to a patchy distribution of OC in AOM associated coprecipitates, which showed a weaker aggregation of OC with Fe and P. In contrast, the distribution of OC in HA-associated coprecipitates was more homogenous, enabling a stronger aggregation of OM with P and a greater passivation effect on P release. Our results revealed that OM sources, association formation pathways, and elemental stoichiometry collectively controlled the stability of OM-Fe-P associations.

Properties and Reactivity of Iron-Organic Matter-Arsenic Composites and their Influence on Arsenic Behavior in Microbial Reduction and Oxidation Processes

Ruixia Han,Zhe Wang,Jitao Lv,Kaiwen He,Siyao Liu,Zhe Zhu,Jerome Nriagu,H. Henry Teng,Yong-Guan Zhu,Gang Li

The biogeochemistry of arsenic in soils is strongly controlled by iron oxides and soil organic matter (SOM). The present study intends to elucidate the behavior of arsenic in Fe-SOM-As composites formed through adsorption or coprecipitation under redox conditions. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) showed that crystalline minerals were generated during Fe-HA-As coprecipitation, while other composites exhibited an amorphous structure. In an anoxic environment, iron-reducing bacteria reduced Fe(III) and As(V) to Fe(II) and As(III), respectively, enhancing the mobility of arsenic. The presence of SOM increased the concentrations of dissolved Fe(II) and As(III) through complexation. Notably, elevated As(III) and reduced Fe(II) were observed in the HA-containing coprecipitation group due to the weak adsorption capacity of crystalline minerals, which released As(V) into solution and competed with Fe(III) for electrons. Under oxic conditions, superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, and hydroxyl radical (•OH) were formed through the oxidation of Fe(II) and reduced SOM. As(III) was subsequently oxidized by superoxide and •OH, and the process was dominated by •OH. Substantial •OH in the HA-containing coprecipitation group mainly oxidized dissolved As(III), while limited •OH in other groups contributed greater to adsorbed As(III). These findings contribute substantially to understanding the mechanisms of the coupled transformation of iron and arsenic in soil under fluctuating redox conditions.

Impacts of Sediment Organic Matter Content and pH on Ecotoxicity of Coexposure of TiO2 Nanoparticles and Cadmium to Freshwater Snails Bellamya aeruginosa

Ma Taowu,Wang Meng,Gong Shuangjiao,Tian Bin

The environmental factors are expected to affect the ecotoxicity of heavy metals in the presence of engineered nanoparticles (NPs) in aquatic ecosystems. However, in sediment scenario, little is known regarding their impacts on the ecotoxicity of co-exposure of sediment-associated heavy metals and NPs. This study evaluated the impacts of different levels of organic matter (OM) (4.8–11.6%) and pH (6–9) on the ecotoxicological effects of co-exposure of sediment-associated titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO 2 -NPs) and cadmium (Cd) to a freshwater gastropod Bellamya aeruginosa . The burdens of Ti and Cd and biomarkers of DNA damage, Na + /K + -ATPase, lipid peroxidation (LPO), and protein carbonylation (PC) in the hepatopancreas were determined following 21 days of exposure. At background level of OM (4.8%) in sediments, TiO 2 -NPs significantly promoted Cd accumulation in low-Cd treatments (5 mg/kg) but did not promote Cd accumulation in high-Cd treatments (25 mg/kg). At the relatively higher OM levels (7.1 and 11.6%), TiO 2 -NPs significantly enhanced Cd accumulation and toxicity as evidenced by aggravated DNA damage, decreased Na + /K + -ATPase activities, and increased LPO and PC levels. Moreover, Cd burdens in both low-Cd and high-Cd treatment were positively correlated with corresponding Ti burdens, indicating TiO 2 -NPs partially acted as carrier of Cd. At all pH levels, in low-Cd treatments, TiO 2 -NPs did not affect Cd accumulation, LPO, and PC levels but significantly enhanced DNA damage and slightly facilitated the inhibition of Na + /K + -ATPase activities. In high-Cd treatments, only at pH 9, TiO 2 -NPs significantly enhanced Cd accumulation and toxicity. Our results implied that interaction between TiO 2 -NPs and OM or pH significantly affected the accumulation and toxicity of Cd in B. aeruginosa , but the underlying mechanisms need further investigation. Additionally, it should be noted that the potential ecological risk of co-exposure of NPs and coexisting pollutants might be closely species-specific and related to environmental media.

Dominant products and reactions during organic matter radiolysis: Implications for hydrocarbon generation of uranium-rich shales

Wenqing Wang,Chiyang Liu,Wenhui Liu,Xiaofeng Wang,Pei Guo,Jianqiang Wang,Zuodong Wang,Zhongping Li,Dongdong Zhang

Organic-rich shales are generally characterized by high uranium (U) contents. The effects of U irradiation on evolution and hydrocarbon generation of organic matter (OM) have attracted substantial attention. However, details on the generation mechanisms of products and the identification of dominant reactions occurring during OM radiolysis remain understudied. In this study, γ ray was used to irradiate immature kerogen and bitumen, and electron beam was for decane. The contents and carbon (C) isotopic compositions of gaseous products, the liquid products of decane, and the functional groups alterations of kerogens and bitumen were detected. The results showed that, the product generation corresponded well to the structural alteration of OM during radiolysis. C–H and R–CH 3 rupture contributed to H 2 and CH 4 generation, respectively. O-containing group cleavage caused CO 2 generation, and O 2 presence could enhance the oxidation of OM by joining in the structure of OM or by facilitating the formation of new oxides. H 2 O addition could not only provide O, enhancing the oxidation of OM, but could also provide H, thus promoting H 2 generation. We identified cracking, cross-linking, and oxidation reactions during the OM radiolysis. C isotopic composition changes in solid OM could facilitate identification of dominant reactions. Non-closed geological environment of shales promoted the occurrence of cracking reaction. The substantial radiation energy generated from U decay in U-rich shales was significant for OM evolution via decrease in H/C, increasing O/C, and via enhancement of dealkylation, aromatization and unsaturation, which were similar to the thermal effects. Moreover, U irradiation could also promote conventional gas and immature gas generation and could provide exogenous H for hydrocarbon generation of OM, especially for OM in an over mature stage. It is essential to consider the effects of U irradiation on the evolution, hydrocarbon generation, and resources assessment of U-rich shales.

Composition regulates organic matter adsorption onto iron (oxy)hydroxides and competition with phosphate: Implications for organic carbon, phosphorus immobilization in lakes

ShuaiLong Wen,JingJing Liu,YueHan Lu,JiaRu Dai,XiuLin Huang,ShiLin An,Erik Jeppesen,ZhengWen Liu,YingXun Du

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is heterogeneous and exhibits diverse adsorption characteristics with or without the competition of phosphorous (P). Uncertainty persists on how these affect the burial and mobilization of organic carbon and P in aquatic ecosystems. In this work, an algae-derived DOM (ADOM) and a commercial humic acid (HA) with distinct composition were assessed for their adsorption behaviors on iron (oxy)hydroxides (FeOx), in the absence and presence of phosphate. ADOM has less aromatics than HA but more protein-like and highly unsaturated structures with oxygen compounds (HUSO). The adsorption capacity of FeOx was significantly greater for ADOM than for HA. Protein-like and HUSO compounds in ADOM and humic-like compounds and macromolecular aromatics in HA were preferentially adsorbed by FeOx. Moreover, ADOM demonstrated a stronger inhibitory effect on phosphate adsorption than that of HA. This observation suggests that substantial autochthonous ADOM released by algae could increase the internal P loading and difficulty to restore eutrophic lakes. In contrast, phosphate competition can also fractionate ADOM, which suppressing the adsorption of protein-like compounds in ADOM onto FeOx, resulting in an increase in their relative abundance in the post-adsorption ADOM, while reducing the abundance of humic-like compounds. However, phosphate had no discernible impact on the compositional fractionation of HA. Collectively, our results show the source-compositions of DOM influence the immobilization of both DOM and P in aquatic ecosystem via adsorption. The preferential adsorption of proteinaceous compounds in ADOM and aromatics in HA highlighted that the attachment with FeOx could remove their source-specific signatures, partly contributing to universal DOM characteristics across aquatic environments.

Causation Analysis and Improvement Strategy for Reduced Pendimethalin Herbicidal Activity in the Field after Encapsulation in Polyurea

Da-xia Zhang,Xian-peng Zhang,Jian Luo,Bei-xing Li,Yan Wei,Feng Liu

To reduce the amount of organic solvents in pendimethalin emulsifiable concentrate (EC), small-size microcapsules (S-MCs) and large-size microcapsules (L-MCs) were prepared with polyurea as a wall material. Petri-dish bioassays were carried out to investigate the bioactivity of formulations and the influence of both organic matter and moisture. The relationships between degradation and the biological activity of three pendimethalin formulations in the soil were investigated, and field experiments were executed to verify the laboratory results. The laboratory tests showed the following: (1) the bioactivity of EC and S-MCs was similar and greater than that of L-MCs; (2) organic matter could reduce the bioactivity of MCs and EC, and the impact of organic matter on L-MCs was greater; (3) increased soil moisture content had no significant effect on the bioactivity of EC but slightly reduced that of the MCs; and (4) the L-MCs showed significantly more prolonged residual and effective persistence in the soil than did EC and S-MCs. However, the field experiments indicated that the herbicidal efficacies of L-MCs at the early and late stages were both lower than those of EC. Comprehensive analysis of the results indicated that the main reason that the herbicidal efficacy of L-MCs was lower than that of EC in the field was that L-MCs missed the optimal herbicidal periods due to the slow-release characteristics of L-MCs. The S-MCs had both similar release rates and herbicidal efficacy in the field as EC. Therefore, to develop a good pesticide formulation, the occurrence and damage characteristic of pests must be considered.

Accelerated removal of pyrene and benzo[a]pyrene in freshwater sediments with amendment of cyanobacteria-derived organic matter

Zaisheng Yan,Helong Jiang,Xiaohong Li,Yuan Shi

The removal of pyrene and benzo[ a ]pyrene (B a P) were investigated in freshwater sediments with amendment of seven different organic matters including cyanobacteria-derived organic matter (COM), plant-derived organic matter (POM), and humic substances (HS). During the 210 days of experiments, the amendment of COM or HS enhanced significantly the removal of pyrene and B a P in sediments, especially with fresh COM (FCOM) treatment much superior to HS. On the contrary, degradation of these polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was not significantly improved and even inhibited in POM-amended sediments. The first-order rate constants of pyrene and B a P degradation in the FCOM-amended sediments reached 0.00540   ±   0.00017   d −1 and 0.00517   ±   0.00057   d −1 , respectively, and were about three and five folds of those in the control treatment. The enhanced PAHs degradation in FCOM-amended sediments was related to higher PAH-degrading bacteria number and bioavailability with a result of biostimulation and priming effect by labile carbon and high-value nutrition in FCOM. Thus, this study improved our understanding about effects of settled biomass from cyanobacterial blooms, which occurred frequently in eutrophic aquatic ecosystems, on the natural attenuation of PAHs in sediments. Furthermore, this study would also help develop a new promising approach to remediate PAH-contaminated sediments through utilization of cyanobacterial bloom biomass.

Organic matter affects phosphorus recovery during vivianite crystallization

Li Changyu,Sheng Yanqing

Vivianite crystallization is a promising route for phosphorus (P) recovery from P-rich wastewater. However, organic matter (OM) in wastewater may influence vivianite formation. In this study, the effects of four representative OMs, glucose, bovine serum albumin (BSA), humic acid (HA) and sodium alginate (SA), on P recovery by vivianite were investigated. The results showed that P recovery efficiency was inhibited by HA and SA, declining by 3.7% and 12.1% under HA (100 mg/L) and SA (800 mg/L), respectively. BSA, HA and SA affected the aggregated form of vivianite crystals. Vivianite particle size decreased in the presence of HA and SA. Subsequent mechanistic exploration indicated that the complexation between the OM and Fe 2+ was the main cause of P recovery efficiency reduction. The coprecipitation of HA and SA with vivianite could reduce the zeta potential on the crystal surface, resulting in a smaller particle size. The nucleation sites provided by BSA and SA could transfer vivianite from single plate-like agglomerate to multilayer plate-like agglomerate. This study provided a better understanding of P recovery by vivianite from OM-rich wastewater. Glucose, BSA, HA and SA affected vivianite crystallization from wastewater. OM might reduce P recovery rate by competition adsorption of Fe 2+ . The morphology of vivianite crystals were different under SA and BSA. Negative correlation presented between OM and Fe/P ratios during crystallization.

Trade-off between arsenic and straw-derived DOM immobilization in their co-sorption on γ-Al2O3: Implications for arsenic mobility and carbon sequestration in farmlands

Qiuyu Chen,Yongyi Zhang,Haiwang Liu,Peng Liu,Xinxin Ye,Xing Xia,Xiangwei Wu

Straw-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) is widespread in farmland soils, but the relationship between straw-derived DOM and As in their co-sorption on minerals and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, batch experiments and spectroscopic analyses were employed to investigate the co-sorption of straw-derived DOM and As(III/V) on γ-Al 2 O 3 . Results showed a trade-off between the As(III/V) and DOM immobilization on γ-Al 2 O 3 under different pH levels, which was caused by competitive sorption. The rape straw-derived DOM (DOM_Ra) exhibited a stronger inhibition on As(III/V) sorption than rice straw-derived DOM (DOM_Ri). This could be due to more aromatic fractions in the DOM_Ra and DOM_Ri, which were preferentially sorbed by γ-Al 2 O 3 . In turn, the preferential sorption of aromatic DOM components was weakened by As(V) sorption, which, however, was not found in As(III) and DOM co-sorption. Furthermore, spectral results indicated that carboxylic groups on the sorbed DOM could provide additional binding sites for As(III/V) to form ternary complexes, but its role was overwhelmed by the DOM competitive sorption, which ultimately exhibited the inhibitory effect of DOM on As(III/V) sorption. These findings enhance the fundamental understanding of the co-sorption of As(III/V) and DOM on soil minerals and contribute to predicting As mobility and OM stability in As-contaminated farmlands with straw return.

Phosphate alters the compositional characteristics of humic acid adsorbed onto goethite

Luo ChunYan,Wen ShuaiLong,An ShiLin,Lu YueHan,Du YingXun

Purpose The adsorption of organic matter and phosphate on minerals is a common natural process that has an important impact on the migration and burial of carbon and phosphorus. Previous studies have focused mainly on the influence of organic matter on the adsorption of phosphate. Yet, the influence of phosphate on the adsorption of different pools of organic matter is not well understood. This study evaluates changes in different organic matter pools during their adsorption to minerals in the presence of phosphate. Materials and methods Firstly, the adsorption behaviors of natural organic matter (i.e., humic acid) and phosphate on goethite were evaluated separately. Secondly, humic acid and phosphate were added to goethite at different orders to elucidate the effect of phosphate on the fractionation of humic acid components adsorbed to goethite. Results and discussion The results showed that when phosphate and humic acid were added simultaneously, goethite was preferentially combined with phosphate. In the absence of phosphate, SUVA 254 of the humic acid solution decreased and E 2 /E 3 of the solution increased during the adsorption. Among the six EEM-PARAFAC (excitation-emission matrix fluorescence coupled with parallel factor analysis) components of the humic acid, C1, C2, and C4 (terrestrial humus-like substances) decreased significantly and exhibited strong adsorption, C3 (microbial fulvic-like substance) showed weak adsorption, whereas C5 (photodegradation products) and C6 (tyrosine-like component) did not show evident adsorption. In the presence of phosphate, phosphate inhibited, and replaced the adsorbed C1, C2, and C4, but promoted the adsorption of C5, which increased the aromaticity and the molecular weight of the humic acid solution. Conclusions Our results reveal that phosphate influences the fractionation of humic acid components adsorbed onto goethite, suggesting that phosphate can alter the chemical composition of natural organic matter interacting with minerals and thus impact the burial and fractionation of natural organic matter at the mineral-water interface.
