Microscale Perovskite Quantum Dot Light-Emitting Diodes (Micro-PeLEDs) for Full-Color Displays

Wenhao Bai,Tongtong Xuan,Haiyan Zhao,Shuchen Shi,Xiaoyu Zhang,Tianliang Zhou,Le Wang,Rong-Jun Xie

Group III–V semiconductor-based microscale light-emitting diode (micro-LED) displays are recognized as one of the most promising display technologies with superhigh brightness and resolution, strong contrast, and superlarge color gamut but currently suffer from low efficiency, low production yield, and high cost. Here, it is proposed to realize cost-effective and full-color micro-LED displays by using microscale perovskite quantum dot LEDs (micro-PeLEDs) as emitters. Bright and uniform red-, green-, and blue-emitting (RGB) micro-PeLED arrays with each pixel size as small as 45 µm are fabricated by in situ inkjet printing a perovskite quantum dot (PeQD) emissive layer in the structure of indium tin oxide/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)/poly(9-vinylcarbazole) (PVK)/sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)/PeQD/1,3,5-tris(1-phenyl-1 H -benzimidazol-2-yl)benzene (TPBi)/LiF/Al. These RGB micro-PeLED arrays display an external quantum efficiency of 0.832%, 0.419%, and 0.052% for red, green, and blue colors, a resolution of 210 PPI, and a wide color gamut (135% of the National Television Standards Committee standard). The authors further demonstrate flexible and full-color active-matrix micro-PeLED displays, which have potential applications in future ultrahigh-definition displays, light communication, and artificial intelligence.

Microsecond-response perovskite light-emitting diodes for active-matrix displays

Gao Yun,Li Hongjin,Dai Xingliang,Ying Xingjian,Liu Zhe,Qin JiaJun,Guo Jie,Han Zhongkang,Zhang Yujing,Zhu Meiyi,Wu Xiaohui,Cai Qiuting,Yang Yixing,Feng Linrun,Zhang Xiaoyu,Huang Jingyun,He Haiping,Gao Feng,Ye Zhizhen

Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) could be of use in the development of active-matrix displays. However, due to ion migration in crystal structure, PeLEDs have electroluminescence rise times over milliseconds, which is problematic for the development of high-refresh-rate displays. Here, we show that the electroluminescence rise time of PeLEDs can be reduced to microseconds using an individual-particle passivation strategy. The approach is based on BF 4 − ions that can passivate every nanocrystal in a perovskite emissive layer during film deposition. It leads to a defect-free film with discrete nanostructure and excellent crystallinity, which inhibits ion migration. Our strategy can be applied in perovskite nanocrystal films with different colours: red (635 nm), green (520 nm) and blue (475 nm). These PeLEDs all demonstrate response times within microseconds and high external quantum efficiencies of 22.7%, 26.2% and 18.1%, respectively. This allows us to create microsecond-response active-matrix PeLEDs that exhibit external quantum efficiencies above 20% at a display brightness of 500–3,000 cd m −2 for green devices with a resolution of 30 pixels per inch. We also develop microsecond-response red, green and blue active-matrix displays with 90 pixels per inch.

Efficient all-thermally evaporated perovskite light-emitting diodes for active-matrix displays

Li Jinghui,Du Peipei,Guo Qingxun,Sun Liang,Shen Zixi,Zhu Jiaxing,Dong Chong,Wang Liang,Zhang Xin,Li Luying,Yang Chaoqun,Pan Jie,Liu Zhengzheng,Xia Bing,Xiao Zewen,Du Juan,Song Boxiang,Luo Jiajun,Tang Jiang

Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have recently demonstrated great potential for next-generation displays. Fabricating PeLEDs by scalable and well-established thermal evaporation—the technique used for industrial manufacturing of organic light-emitting diodes—should accelerate the development of perovskite displays; however, thermal evaporation of perovskites produces films with a high density of defects due to fast and uncontrollable crystal growth during evaporation. As a result, the performance of evaporated PeLEDs is lagging behind their solution-processed counterparts. Here we develop a tri-source co-evaporation strategy to introduce a multifunctional Lewis-base additive that reduces the perovskite grain size while confining charge carriers and passivating surface defects. The process enables the in situ formation of high-quality perovskite nanocrystal films with improved crystallinity, enhanced photoluminescence quantum yield and suppressed defects. A peak external quantum efficiency of 16.4% is achieved for green PeLEDs with an all-thermally evaporated device architecture. We further fabricate active-matrix PeLED displays by integrating top-emitting PeLEDs on a 6.67-inch thin-film transistor backplane. The displays show high-definition images and videos with a resolution of 1,080 × 2,400 and continuous greyscale information. We anticipate that this work will stimulate the exploration of efficient vapour-deposited PeLEDs for industrial display applications.

Active-matrix extended-gate field-effect transistor array for simultaneous detection of multiple metabolites

Chaochao Shen,Xin Xi,Dongqing Wu,Xiaojun Guo,Yuezeng Su,Ruili Liu

With the deepening understanding of diseases, increasing attention has been paid to personalized healthcare and precise diagnosis, which usually depend on the simultaneous monitoring of multiple metabolites, therefore requiring biological sensing systems to possess high sensitivity, specificity, throughput, and instant monitoring capabilities. In this work, we demonstrated the active-matrix extended-gate field-effect transistor (AMEGFET) array that can perform instant analysis of various metabolites in small amounts of body fluids collected during routine physiological activities. The extended gate electrodes of the AMEGFETs comprise ordered mesoporous carbon fibers loaded with both oxidoreductase enzymes for specific metabolites and platinum nanoparticles. By selecting customized electrode combinations, the AMEGFET array can monitor the concentrations of metabolites closely associated with chronic diseases and lifestyles, such as glucose, uric acid, cholesterol, ethanol, and lactate. The switch function of AMEGFET not only simplifies the readout circuitry for large-scale arrays but also avoids the mutual interferences among sensing units. The high flexibility and scalability make the AMEGFET array widely applicable in establishing high-throughput sensing platforms for biomarkers, providing highly efficient technical support for proactive health and intelligent healthcare.
