Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) is a waterborne coating with excellent physicochemical properties. Its deficiencies of water resistance, chemical resistance, staining, and hardness have limited the wide application of polyurethane in the wood lacquer market. In this study, polycarbonate diols (PCDL) were used as soft segments and WPCU was modified by cross-linking using Trimethylolpropane (TMP) to prepare polycarbonate type WPU (WPCU) with cross-linked network structure. The new wood lacquer was prepared by adding various additives and tested by applying it on wood board. The successful synthesis of WPCU was determined by FTIR testing, and the cross-linking degree of WPCU was probed by low-field NMR. The viscosity of the cross-linked WPCU emulsion showed a decreasing trend compared to the uncross-linked WPCU emulsion, and WPCU-2 had the smallest particle size. Compared with the uncrosslinked WPCU film, the crosslinked WPCU film had lower water absorption (2.2%), higher water contact angle (72.7°), excellent tensile strength (44.02 MPa), higher thermomechanical, and better water and alcohol resistance. The effect of crosslinker content on the microphase separation of WPCU chain segments on the surface roughness of the film was investigated by SEM. The wood paint prepared by WPCU emulsion has good dry heat resistance, chemical resistance, and adhesion, and the hardness of the wood paint when the TMP content is 3% reaches H. It also has good resistance to sticky stains, which can be used to develop new wood lacquer.Keywords:water-based wood lacquer;polycarbonate diol;cross-linked network;microphase separation;stain resistance
Self-matt coating of waterborne polyurethane (WBPU) was synthesized by combining prepolymer and self-emulsification methods. The emulsion was fabricated from both hydroxy carboxylic acid and aminosulfonic acid types of hydrophilic chain-extending agents, in which the 2-[(2-aminoethyl) amino] ethane sulphonate sodium (AAS salt) was produced in laboratory. This emulsion demonstrated an excellent matt performance without the addition of extra matting agents after filming. Four different kinds of surface properties were measured on the film: the specular gloss (60° gloss meter), the contact angle (CA), the surface roughness degree (3D Surface Profilometer), and the topography of the coatings surface (SEM). The results showed that tons of spherical particles with diameter in a few micrometers were aggregated on the film surface. The effect of the roughness parameters ( R
a
and R
q
) and the average particle size of the emulsions on the specular gloss degree were probed. The research indicated that the emulsion with average particle size in the range of 2.5–3.0 µm and, meanwhile, the film with roughness parameters R
a
and R
q
both greater than 1 µm could attain the best matt effect. The WBPU emulsions showed good physical and mechanical properties, and were introduced into wood varnish for matting purpose.
In this study, Ag@SiO 2 core-shell nanoparticles were synthesized using the Stöber method and then physically mixing with MPS functionalized poly (styrene-co-acrylate) (PSA) emulsion to obtain a novel antibacterial composite material (PSA/Ag@SiO 2 ). The dispersion of composite latexes was improved by the formation of Si-O-Si covalent bonds , and the migration of AgNPs on the surface of composite films enhanced their antimicrobial activity. Analysis of UV-Vis absorption spectra , TEM images, XPS and XRD data confirmed the core-shell structure of Ag@SiO 2 and the successful coating of AgNPs by SiO 2 . TEM micrographs showed that Ag@SiO 2 core-shell nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed in the composite latexes, with an average particle size of 198 nm for PSA/Ag@SiO 2 composite latexes, larger than that of PSA latexes (162 nm). FTIR spectra also indicated the presence of Si-O-Si covalent bonds resulting from the sol-gel reaction between MPS functionalized PSA with Ag@SiO 2 . XPS and WCA characterization revealed the disruption of the core-shell structure of Ag@SiO 2, leading to the migration of AgNPs to the air-film interface. The results of antibacterial activity demonstrated that PSA/Ag@SiO 2 composite films displayed antibacterial activity against both E. coli and S. aureus , and the former displayer a slightly better antibacterial activity than the latter. The water-based acrylic polymer coatings with antibacterial properties explored in current work have various applications in wood paints, varnishes, metal protection, decorative systems and other related fields.
