In this work, form-stable phase change composites (PCCs) was prepared based on wood flour (WF), the by-product of timber industry, via delignification and impregnation with myristyl alcohol (MA). After delignification, the micro-channel structure inherited from wood was still maintained and unblocked in delignified wood flour (dWF), which are beneficial to accommodate and restrict solid-liquid phase change materials (PCMs). The dWF/MA PCCs exhibit excellent leakage-proof properties even at temperature much higher than the melting point of MA and high phase change enthalpy. The dWF/MA PCCs were further used to fabricate composite boards by bonding with urea–formaldehyde (UF) resin. The temperature management effect of dWF/MA/UF boards was tentatively demonstrated through constructing building models and measuring the inner temperature-time curves. This work provides a promising way to fully utilize and functionalize WF and broad its application in energy-related areas.

Hydrothermal carbonization of cellulose, lignin, d-xylose (substitute for hemicellulose), and wood meal (WM) was experimentally conducted between 225 and 265 °C, and the chemical and structural properties of the hydrochars were investigated. The hydrochar yield is between 45 and 60%, and the yield trend of the feedstock is lignin > WM > cellulose > d-xylose. The hydrochars seem stable below 300 °C, and aromatic structure is formed in all of these hydrochars. The C content, C recovery, energy recovery, ratio of C/O, and ratio of C/H in all of these hydrochars are among 63–75%, 80–87%, 78–89%, 2.3–4.1, and 12–15, respectively. The higher heating value (HHV) of the hydrochars is among 24–30 MJ/kg, with an increase of 45–91% compared with the corresponding feedstock. The carbonization mechanism is proposed, and furfural is found to be an important intermediate product during d-xylose hydrochar production, while lignin hydrothermal carbonization products are made of polyaromatic hydrochar and phenolic hydrochar. The formation of microspheres on the surface of cellulose and WM hydrochars is discussed, and transformation of the hemicellulose should be the reaction for WM microsphere production.

To avoid resource wastage and secondary environmental pollution, recycling and reusing waste wood powder is still a great challenge. Moreover, the poor viscosity and irregular pore size of wood powder limit its practical application. This study employed a green and convenient wood powder reconstitution strategy to achieve highly adhesive bonding and pore size control between wood powder particles, thus preparing a high-strength and super hydrophilic wood powder membrane. The wood powder fibers were partially dissolved and regenerated to create a reconstituted wood powder hydrogel membrane, using waste wood powder as the raw material. The wood powder reconstitution strategy offers advantages such as environmental friendliness, simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and strong universality. Furthermore, the materials exhibit excellent self-cleaning properties and superhydrophilicity. Driven by gravity, the membrane can purify oily wastewater and dyes. Additionally, the reconstitution strategy offers a new pathway for recycling wood powder.

In this work, a suitable solvent (Lithium Bromide Hydrate) was selected and used for the efficient dissolution and carbonization of biomass for the preparation of carbon spheres directly from wood powders by hydrothermal carbonization (HTC), which was so far the first successful attempt of making carbon spheres directly from woody biomass. The impacts of the preparation conditions on the yield and morphology of carbon spheres were carefully studied, and it was found that the yield and degree of carbonization of carbon spheres were positively correlated with the temperature and reaction time. The optimal operation conditions were determined as 170 °C, reaction time 5 h and LiBr concentration 65 wt%. And the produced carbon spheres have an average particle size of 603 nm with a yield of 22.4%. The characterization of carbon spheres revealed that the prepared nanoparticles had excellent spherical morphology and multifunctional groups, which led to a better surface reactivity than the raw material itself. Moreover, levulinic acid (LA) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) were found in the liquid phase of the reaction products, indicating the furan derivatives were formed in the HTC process , which demonstrated a great potential of biomass valorisation with this innovative process.

In this study, a fully bio-based intumescent flame retardant, phytic acid vanillin arginine salt (VR-PA), was designed and synthesized by l-arginine (AR) and vanillin (VA) via a Schiff base reaction, followed by the introduction of phytic acid (PA) using electrostatic ionic interactions. The intumescent flame retardant, VR-PA, was incorporated into wood flour polypropylene composites (WFPP) to enhance their flame retardant and smoke suppression properties. Compared to pure WF, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of WFPP with 20 wt% VR-PA increased to 28.2 %, while the peak heat release rate and total heat release were reduced by 35.4 % and 20.6 %, respectively. Additionally, the WF with 15 wt% VR-PA exhibited the greatest reduction in total smoke production, with a significant decrease of 42.1 %. The improved flame retardant and smoke suppression performance of the WF is attributed to the free radical trapping effect of VR-PA in the gas phase during the combustion process, as well as the formation of an expanded and continuous carbon layer during in the condensed phase. This study provides a green method to enhance the flame retardancy and smoke suppression of WFPP composites.

A series of biochar materials was prepared through pyrolyzing poplar wood powder waste under different pyrolyzing temperatures, which were afterwards characterized in detail. Then, the poplar powder biochar (PPB) was used to degrade bisphenol A (BPA) in water via activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The results indicate that the activation efficiency of the prepared PPB was correlated with its surface functional groups, which were regulated by its pyrolyzing temperature. Specifically, the biochar pyrolyzed at 600 °C (PPB-600) exhibited the optimal BPA removal activity, in which 0.5 g/L of PPB-600 could remove 0.02 mM of BPA within 120 min. From the results of scavenging tests, ESR analysis and probe pollutant degradation tests, it was inferred that the BPA was degraded by non-radical singlet oxygen in the PPB/PMS system. Since PPB consumed its surface oxygen functional groups and structural defects to activate PMS, the catalytic performance of PPB was gradually reduced after several cycles. This study can provide new insight for the design and preparation of metal-free biochar catalysts from waste wood precursor for the highly-efficient removal of refractory organic pollutants in water. Keywords:persulfate activation;biochar;wood powder waste;organic pollutant degradation;non-radical pathway
