A novel approach utilizing tung oil (TO)-based coatings to improve the fire safety and corrosion resistance of wood was presented. This study focuses on the development of methyl 11,13,15-tris((diethoxyphosphoryl)oxy)-10,12,14-trihydroxyoctadecanoate (MTTO), a tung oil-derived structural flame retardant polyol using innovative methods. Synthesizing MTTO from epoxidized TO methyl ester (eTOME) and diethyl aminophosphate achieved a high yield of 91%. Molecular characterization of MTTO was performed using various spectroscopic techniques. The application of 50% MTTO solution coated with 1% tung oil (MTTO-b-TO) treated wood demonstrated excellent flame retardant properties, belonging to UL-94V-0 class of materials. The incorporation of MTTO increased the LOI of the material from 21.4% to 37.9% and 36.1%, respectively. Furthermore, the treated wood with MTTO-b-TO exhibited significantly lower mass loss rates compared to pure wood after undergoing anti-white or brown-rot fungus experiments. These findings provide valuable insights for the rational design of tung oil-based coatings, offering enhanced wood protection, sustainable resource utilization, and reduced health and environmental risks.

Wood preservation is one of the most effective methods to prevent damage caused by termites. Sodium fluoride (NaF) is a well-known fungicide for preventing decay in timber due to its excellent diffusion in wood. In this study, the toxicity of NaF to the termites Reticulitermes flaviceps and its potential leachability as wood preservative were assessed. While termites were in contact with NaF-treated filter paper in a Petri dish for nine days, termites were found completely dead while the papers were treated by NaF at concentration of 0.5 % (wt/wt) or above. Wood blocks of Pinus massoniana were treated with five different concentrations of NaF (0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 2 %) respectively, and then exposed to a non-soil-contact field leaching experiment. After 4 weeks, retention levels of NaF in the wood blocks dropped from 0.075–0.834 % to 0.057–0.284 %. A choice test, in which NaF-treated and untreated wood blocks were exposed to the termites R. flaviceps was conducted. The results showed NaF, even at retention of 0.057 % (wt/wt), could significantly inhibit termite feeding in the treated blocks. The results suggest that NaF is a suitable wood preservative with anti-feedant activity against termites.

Disodium octoborate tetrahydrate (DOT) is a well-received and eco-friendly preservative. However, it is prone to leaching from wood in humid conditions or rainy seasons, causing problems such as decreased efficiency in resisting fungi and poor surface performance in surface finishing. To obtain enhanced leaching resistance and simultaneously achieve controlled release of DOT, a pH and temperature dual responsive poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate/2-(Dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate) (PDH) was prepared and optimized for in situ construction of DOT-loaded PDH (PDHD) in wood. Results showed that PDH displayed obvious pH and temperature-responsive swelling, and when loaded with DOT, the PDHD consequently released DOT in a pH and temperature-responsive way. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Solid-13C NMR analysis and Dynamic mechanical analysis confirmed the copolymerization of 2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and 2-(Dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA), as well as the presence of crosslinked structure formed from hydrogen bond between the hydroxyl group of HEMA and the N,N-dimethylamino groups of DMAEMA. After that, the PDHD was in situ constructed in wood for controlled release of boron. During the water leaching test, the modified wood exhibited a boron fixation rate of 49.05% compared with 0.72% of the neat DOT-treated wood. Besides, it presented controlled release activity in response to pH and temperature. This work provides new approaches to the fixation of boron preservatives and notably realizes responsive releasing of boron compounds for long-term wood preservation.

This article explores the feasibility of rare earth element-tannin complexes as a wood preservative . The tannins (T) from Cercis glabra Pampan. are extracted, sulfonated (ST), and coordinated with lanthanum (La) elements to fabricate the complexes (La-T, and La-ST). Results show that two stable complexes, La-T and La-ST, are successfully formed by coordinating the La-ions with the phenolic hydroxyl groups in T and ST. Sulfonated tannins have a better adsorption capacity for lanthanum ions. The mass percentage of La in La-ST (36.50%) is higher than that in La-T (24.85%). The results of the white-rot decay test reveal that wood treated with La-T (1.98%) and La-ST (2.58%) preservatives has significantly lower weight loss rates compared to the untreated (28.94%). However, the brown rot decay test demonstrates that wood treated with La-T (62.68%) and La-ST (50.81%) only has slightly lower weight loss rates compared to the untreated (71.84%). Finally, the leaching of La-T and La-ST treated poplar wood was significantly lower than La self-treated ones. This novel approach can produce stable rare earth-wood preservatives and improve the wood's bio-durability and anti-leaching properties, thus remarkably enhancing the outdoor performance of modified wood products .

Vanillin is an antifungal and environmentally friendly compound. In this study, vanillin and silica microcapsules (VSM) were microencapsulated using the sol-gel method and then impregnated into wood. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDXA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize the morphological structure and distribution of VSM in wood. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to study the intermolecular interactions between VSM and wood. The antifungal performance of the VSM-treated wood was evaluated. The study revealed that VSM had good sustained-release performance and decay resistance. Mass losses of VSM-treated wood after leaching and exposure to Trametes versicolor (L.) Quel. and Gloephyllum trabeum (Pers.) Murrill decreased from mass losses of 20.8 % and 15.9 % of the control group to 9.2 % and 6.4 %, respectively. VSM treatment disrupted the mycelium of T. versicolor and G. trabeum , inhibited their respiratory metabolism, and the ligninase-laccase enzyme activity of T. versicolor . Meanwhile, MOR and MOE of VSM-treated wood were 96.7 MPa and 12.3 GPa which were 28.8 % and 11.5 % higher than the control group, respectively.

Wood is an environmentally friendly product , but some of woods can be easily biodegraded. Salicylic acid/silica microcapsules (SSM) represents a kind of wood preservative prepared with the anti-fungal salicylic acid as a core substance and the silica as wall material using sol-gel technology . SSMs were synthesized and then impregnated into poplar wood using vacuum-pressure treatment. Leaching tests were carried out in distilled water for up to 318 h. Decay resistance of SSM treated poplar against white-rot fungi ( Trametes versicolor ) and brown rot fungi ( Gloeophyllum trabeum ) was determined. Leaching tests showed that SSM retention was good and leaching resistance of salicylic acid in SSM treated wood were improved. SEM (scanning electron microscope), FTIR (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy), EDX (Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy) and XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) analysis showed that the SSMs were between 0.06 and 0.16 μm, and most were distributed in the vessel cavity with hydrogen bonding to cell wall surfaces, some SSMs were found in the cell wall. The decay resistance of SSM treated poplar was greatly improved compared to untreated poplar.

Utilizing conventional wood preservatives poses potential risks to ecosystems and human health. Therefore, the wood protection industry must develop alternatives that are both efficient and environmentally friendly. In this paper, industrial tobacco waste extracts were used as eco-friendly wood preservatives against wood decay fungi. Three major constituents in the extracts were identified via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and included nicotine, neophytadiene, and 2,7,11-cembratriene-4,6-diol. The antifungal activities of waste tobacco extracts and these three major constituents against wood decay fungi were tested. At a concentration of 40 mg/mL, the tobacco waste extract treated with 50% ethanol significantly inhibited the activity of wood decay fungi. This was because the extract contained nicotine as the primary active component and neophytadiene as a synergistic active component. Wood decay resistance tests were conducted onPinus yunnanensisandHevea brasiliensistreated with a 50% ethanol extract of tobacco waste at a concentration of 40 mg/mL. The mass losses ofPinus yunnanensisexposed toG. trabeumandT. versicolorwere 4.11% and 5.03%, respectively, while the mass losses inHevea brasiliensisexposed toG. trabeumandT. versicolorwere 7.85% and 9.85%, respectively, which were classified as highly resistant. The acute ecotoxicity of the tobacco waste extract was assessed using a kinetic luminescent bacteria test withAliivibrio fischeri, which revealed significantly lower acute toxicity than a commercial copper-based wood preservative. This study offers insights into high-value utilization of tobacco waste and advancement of natural wood preservatives.

Since commercially available metal ion antifungal agents face the problems of polluting the environment and endangering human health, the development of environmentally friendly antifungal agents has become a top priority. Xylan nanoparticles with an average particle size of 500 nm were extracted from a biomass resource, corn kernel, by secondary alkali treatment. Hyperbranched polymers with terminal hydroxyl groups (HBP-OH) were synthesized using maleic anhydride and diethanolamine in a “one-step melting method”. New reactive functional groups were introduced on the hydroxyl group of HBP-OH by a quaternization reaction. The successful preparation of the quaternary ammonium cationic hyperbranched polymer (HBP-L) was demonstrated by IR and 1 HNMR. Cross-linking of HBP-L with xylan nanoparticles via glutaraldehyde conferred new antifungal properties to the xylan nanoparticles. Infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic hydrogen spectroscopy proved the attachment of the polymer to the nanoparticles. The synthesized antifungal agent showed class I inhibition of both fungi, with weight loss reduced to 5%. The innovative application of modified nano-xylan in wood provides new ideas for the commercialization of polysaccharide-based antifungal agents.

Enhancing the decay resistance ofPopulus tomentosawood through environmentally friendly methods is crucial for improving its durability and market competitiveness. Lignified twigs (LT), typically unsuitable as timber due to their small diameter, are rich in lignin, which degrades during thermal induction to produce antifungal organic compounds. In this context, the objective of this study was to develop a lignified twig preservative (LTP) by thermal induction from the LT ofActinidia chinensisvar.Jinyang. The antifungal activity of LTP under varying thermal conditions was analyzed, along with its chemical composition. Enzyme activity, cell membrane integrity, and respiratory metabolism in fungi treated with LTP were examined to elucidate antifungal mechanisms. Additionally, the decay resistance of LTP-treated wood was evaluated. Results revealed that LTP produced under N2at 220 °C exhibited robust antifungal activity againstTrametes versicolorandGloeophyllum trabeum, attributed to phenolic compounds such as syringaldehyde, syringone, vanillin, and vanillone. LTP inhibited fungal cellulases, hemicellulases, and ligninases by 30%–60%, disrupted cell membrane functionality, and suppressed respiratory metabolism. Poplar wood treated with LTP demonstrated significantly enhanced decay resistance (mass loss < 10%). This thermal-induced feedback pattern shows great potential for LT in wood preservation.
