Quick suberin-based healing after wounding played a protective role for plant to prevent further damage. In this study, the stimulative effect of exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) on wound suberization in postharvest kiwifruit was evaluated through suberin staining with toluidine blue O as well as the determination of suberin phenolics and aliphatics in wound tissue. Furthermore, to reveal the regulatory involvement of ABA in wound suberization, comparative quantitative proteomics and transcriptomics analyses based on iTRAQ and qRT-PCR technique were performed. In proteomics levels, a total of 95 protein species consistently showed differential abundance between ABA and control, including 29 down-regulated and 66 up-regulated protein species. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) with protein-protein interaction analyses revealed that ABA mainly affected the antioxidant system, phenylpropanoid metabolism and lipid metabolism associated with wound suberization. Based on the data of proteomics analysis, the differential expressions of genes encoding 11 selected protein species were confirmed by qRT-PCR analyses. GSH-Px, MDHAR, SOD , APX , POD, PAL , CCR, PPO , CYP86B1, DGGT and KCS11 were likely to be the key enzymes that involved the response of ABA to stimulate wound suberization by mediating the antioxidant system, phenylpropanoid metabolism and lipid metabolism. Biological significance Kiwifruit is susceptible to physical injury causing postharvest deterioration during harvest, transportation and storage. Therefore, quick healing is important for maintaining the postharvest quality of injured fruit. This work elucidated the potential role of ABA and the proteomic mechanism of its regulation in wound suberization of postharvest kiwifruit.

Excessive accumulation of heavy metals such as trivalent chromium [Cr(Ⅲ)] threatens environmental sustainability and crop health. While silicon fertilizers are known to mitigate Cr(III) toxicity in plants, and silica nanoparticles (SiO 2 NPs) show promise for heavy metal stress alleviation, their comparative efficacy and underlying mechanisms remain unexplored. In this study, we compared the effects of SiO 2 NPs and sodium silicate (Na 2 SiO 3 ) in alleviating Cr(Ⅲ) stress in rice and elucidated the mechanisms behind. Results showed that SiO 2 NPs reduced Cr(Ⅲ) accumulation more effectively than Na 2 SiO 3 in rice shoots, roots and xylem sap. Trisodium-8-hydroxy-1,3,6- pyrenetrisulfonic (PTS) tracer analysis confirmed that SiO 2 NPs more significantly inhibited Cr(Ⅲ) apoplastic transport. Consequently, SiO 2 NPs better alleviated Cr(Ⅲ)-induced growth inhibition and malondialdehyde (MDA) accumulation. Both SiO 2 NPs and Na 2 SiO 3 exhibited tissue-specific regulation of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) detoxification: SiO 2 NPs more effectively reduced H 2 O 2 accumulation in roots and increased catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and peroxidase (POD) activities in shoots, while Na 2 SiO 3 showed the opposite pattern. The mechanistic studies demonstrated that the root-specific distribution of SiO 2 NPs facilitated their stronger physical barrier formation in roots. Furthermore, SiO 2 NPs outperformed Na 2 SiO 3 in reinforcing endodermal apoplastic barriers by promoting lignin accumulation and upregulating lignin biosynthesis-related genes ( OsCCR , OsC4H , Os4CL , OsCAD , OsPAL ), while also promoting earlier initiation of endodermal suberin deposition near root tips. Overall, our study indicates that SiO 2 NPs more effectively reinforced apoplastic barriers, restricted the apoplastic transport of Cr(Ⅲ) and consequently alleviated Cr(Ⅲ)-induced stress in rice.

The development of yarn-free cellulose fibers from natural biomass provides a low-energy and environmentally conscious alternative for producing functional textiles. This study introduced a method for producing yarn-free cellulose fibers from the bast of Broussonetia papyrifera (paper mulberry), a fast-growing plant that does not require pesticides. The fibers were extracted using a mild alkaline treatment that preserved their alignment and allowed them to be knitted directly without traditional spinning. A coating of suberin, obtained from cork bark waste ( Quercus variabilis ), was applied using ethanol dispersion and fixed by heating at 110 °C. The coating improved the fiber’s antibacterial performance, moisture response, and mechanical strength (tensile strength: 0.43 GPa; Young’s modulus: 6.4 GPa), while keeping the material flexible and washable. The suberin layer could be removed and reused through a recycling process involving ionic liquids, allowing over 95% recovery after multiple cycles. A life cycle assessment showed that this fiber system had a lower environmental impact compared to conventional synthetic textile fibers. Overall, this work provided a practical and recyclable approach to making functional textiles from natural plant materials.
