Wood pitch, a byproduct of bamboo and wood production, is a promising raw material for carbon substances because of its high carbon yield and aromatic structures. In this study, a green, solvent-free ball-milling method was employed to control the degree of oxidation of wood pitch by adjusting the milling time. The degree of oxidation degree was positively correlated with the milling time, reaching 0.4 (O/C atomic ratio) at 11 h. The ball-milling process reduced the particle size and enhanced the exposure of the oxygen-containing groups, thereby improving the reactivity. Prolonging the milling time increased the number of oxygen-containing functional groups in wood pitch, improving the electrochemical performance of porous carbon materials. After 9 h of ball-milling, the resulting carbon material exhibited a specific capacitance of 297 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g. It demonstrates advantages such as environmental friendliness, low cost, and easy functionalization, making it a highly promising electrode material for supercapacitors.

Wood pitch, derived from dry distillation of wood, is a promising carbon electrode material. A novel strategy is presented for fabricating honeycomb-like porous carbon nanosheets using a template-free approach. Wood pitch is pre-treated with H₂O₂ to introduce oxygen-containing functional groups selectively at the edges of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, enhancing hydrophilicity and reactivity. Adding rosin groups to the oxidized wood pitch molecules helps to regulate intermolecular spacing and prevent excessive aggregation, facilitating subsequent KOH intercalation activation and the formation of a porous structure. The resulting rosin-modified wood pitch-based carbon material (RWPC-0.2) features a high specific surface area (3521.5 m 2 g −1 ). With a current density of 1 A g −1 , the device has a specific capacitance of 376 F g −1 . After 5000 cycles at 10 A g −1 , it still has 83.8% of its initial specific capacitance. Using direct ink writing (DIW) technology in combination with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrene sulfonate/RWPC-0.2 (PEDOT: PSS/RWPC-0.2) as the electrode ink, microelectrodes are fabricated and microsupercapacitors are constructed with high areal capacitance (460 mF cm − 2 ), excellent rate performance, and good cycling stability. This study offers new insights for developing printed micro-energy storage devices based on wood pitch-derived carbon materials and opens new possibilities for the application of biomass materials in smart electronics.

Wood tar is the main by-product of thermal cracking of biomass. Magnetic biomass activated carbon (M-RWTAC) has been prepared from wood tar. The phenol component in the wood tar has firstly been fixed by phenolic reaction. The resinifero wood tar is subsequently employed to prepare magnetic biomass activated carbon through carbonization, activation and magnetization steps. The surface structure, property and magnetic properties of magnetic biomass activated carbon analyzed by a variety of techniques. Rich oxygen group and high specific surface area of the as-prepared M-RWTAC can provides convenient condition to the adsorption contaminate. Adsorption behavior of the as-prepared M-RWTAC is evaluated with MB as a model of dye pollutant. The MB adsorption of M-RWTAC is in accordance with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model is predominant for this adsorption system with the maximum adsorption capacity of 528 mg g −1 . The adsorption of MB onto M-RWTAC is an exothermic and entropy production process. The regenerated M-RWTAC can be recycled with the removal efficiency of 82.5 % after 5 successive adsorption cycles. The present study provides a new route to utilize wood tar by-product of biomass pyrolysis .

Pervious concrete made from epoxy resin suffers from high cost and is prone to cracking due to its inherent brittleness and aging. In this study, wood tar and formaldehyde, both easily available and low in cost, were used to modify epoxy resins via Mannich reaction. The resultant water from the reaction could facilitate cement hydration to form better adhesion with coarse aggregates as framework. Pervious concrete with modified epoxy resins demonstrated 21.9% improved compressive strength and 52.5% increased abrasion resistance, with comparable aging and frost resistance performance. The enhancing mechanism of modified epoxy resin was investigated by FTIR spectroscopy, DSC , and NMR analyses.
