Optimizing xylose production from pinewood sawdust through dilute-phosphoric-acid hydrolysis by response surface methodology

Leichang Cao,Huihui Chen,Daniel C.W. Tsang,Gang Luo,Shilai Hao,Shicheng Zhang,Jianmin Chen

Response surface methodology was used to optimize the xylose production from pinewood sawdust through dilute-phosphoric-acid hydrolysis. The effects of independent variables on xylose yield were investigated, including reaction temperature (75–175 °C), reaction time (0–7.2 h), solution-to-feed ratio (4–20 mL/g), and phosphoric-acid concentration (0–6.67 wt%). Results indicated that the individual factor H 3 PO 4 concentration and the interacting factors including temperature × time, temperature × H 3 PO 4 concentration, and solution-to-feed ratio × H 3 PO 4 concentration were all significant factors. Long reaction time (>5.4 h) and high phosphoric-acid concentration (>5%) showed little effect. Xylose yield increased with increasing temperature up to 125 °C. Higher phosphoric-acid concentration and larger solution-to-feed ratio also increased xylose yield. The coefficient of determination, corresponding analysis of variance, and parity plot indicated that the fitted model was appropriate for the acid-hydrolysis process. The maximum xylose production of 90.95% could be obtained with the reaction temperature of 106.7 °C, reaction time of 4.57 h, phosphoric-acid concentration 4.49 wt%, and solution-to-feed ratio of 12.51 mL/g.

Cascade fractionation of bamboo shoot shells into high-yield xylose, easily digestible cellulose and high-quality lignin nanoparticles by tailored catalytic hydrothermal–hydrated alkaline deep eutectic solvents pretreatment

Cheng Zuo,Ying Xu,Xin-Yi Hui,Ling-Hua Xu,Jia-Long Wen,Tong-Qi Yuan

The high complexity and compactness of inherent structure in lignocellulosic materials (LCM) leads to the difficulty of fractionation and conversion of its major component, which is the key obstacle limiting the value-added utilization of LCM. In this work, a cascade fractionation strategy, coupling catalytic hydrothermal pretreatment (CHTP, choline chloride: ethylene glycol: AlCl 3 , ChCl/ EG/ AlCl 3 ) with hydrated alkaline deep eutectic solvent (HADES, triethylbenzyl ammonium chloride/ethanolamine, TEBAC/EM) treatment, was proposed to fractionate dendrocalamus latiftorus munro shoot shells (DLMSS). The results showed that considerably high hemicelluloses removal (94.57 %) and xylose yield (90.73 %) were achieved by the first step (CHTP, 160 °C, 1 h, 2 % of catalyst loading). The cascaded HADES treatment realized 90.25 % delignification ratio under the optimal conditions (120 °C, 3 h, 75 % of ADES loading), and the obtained residue could be easily converted into high-yield (93.35 %) of glucose via enzymatic saccharification. In addition, multiple enrichment cycle strategy (MECS) was performed to facilitate the recyclability of the HADES. The results showed that the enriched lignin recovered by MECS was activated by in-situ demethoxylation reaction. And such lignin fraction could be easily assembled into homogeneous lignin nanoparticles (LNPs, ∼31.51 nm in diameter) by simple sonication. Meanwhile, the MECS signally energized the antioxidant activity of the enriched lignin. Based on the high-efficiency cascade fractionation with the coupled CHTP-HADES fractionation strategy, it will observably boost the effectiveness and scalability of the advanced biorefinery strategy.

Flow chemistry for a better fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass in products structure and yield

Hao Zhou,Qin Liu,Xiuhong Zhong,Yaqi Chu,Zhaojiang Wang,Yanqin Wang

To achieve the valorization of whole compositions of lignocellulosic biomass, flow fractionation (FF) was developed based on the flow chemistry of the major components of biomass, i.e., glucan, xylan, and lignin. Three kinds of solvent, i.e., water, formic acid, and p -toluenesulfonic acid (p-TsOH), were employed in FF treatments of poplar wood for an evaluation of performance in structure and yield of products. The advantage of FF was firstly confirmed by the nearly complete recovery of glucan in solid product, and the greatly enhanced digestibility of enzymatic hydrolysis as indicated by the glucose yield of 68.1 % at a low cellulase dosage of 10 FPU/g solid product from water treated poplar wood. The second advantage of FF was the rapid hydrolysis and very slight degradation of xylan for the three solvents explored, especially for water as indicated by the xylose yield of 80.3 % from poplar wood treated at 200 °C just for 15 min.. Last but not least, structure-preserved lignins were harvested from biomass with good yield, e.g., 40.3 % of lignin yield and 99.8 % of β-O-4 retention from poplar wood using water as solvent. Thus-obtained lignin (F72T130t30) was successfully transformed to hydrocarbons over Ru/Nb 2 O 5 catalyst with the yield of 21 wt%. In short, these remarkable performances of FF in products structure and yield build a feasible valorization of lignocellulosic biomass for sustainable biorefinery.

Optimizing combinatorial pretreatment for efficient separation and utilization of reed components

Meizhen Jiao,Jie Lu,Jinguang Hu,Jian Du,Yanna Lv,Jinwen Hu,Yehan Tao,Haisong Wang

In this study, we introduce a novel two-step method for efficiently separating and utilizing reed biomass. The process involves seawater and ammonium chloride (SW/AC) pretreatment followed by high solid-phase ethanolamine (ETA) pretreatment. During the SW/AC pre-processing stage, metal ions and chloride ions in seawater facilitated the depolymerization of hemicellulose into xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS), yielding 44.71 %. Subsequently, the two-step SW/AC-ETA pretreatment achieved a lignin removal rate of 80.34 % and rose to yields of glucose (99.10 %) and xylose (84.95 %). Characterization via FTIR, XRD, and SEM analyses revealed significant disruption of the lignin-carbohydrate complex structure in the reed, thereby increasing cellulose accessibility from 136.99 mg/g in raw material to 526.32 mg/g. This study offers a novel, environmentally friendly, and efficient strategy for separating reed components.
