Wood-derived fiber/BiOBr/AgBr sponges by in situ synthesis for separation of emulsions and degradation of dyes

Peng Xu,Jin Yang,Yu Chen,Yong Li,Xiaohua Jia,Haojie Song

The removal of emulsified oil and organic dyes from wastewater is of extreme challenge owing to their difference of physical and chemical properties. Here we choose cellulose fibers derived from wood as supporting materials and the irregular flake-like BiOBr and sphere-like AgBr are in situ grown on the fibers via freeze-drying, which successfully create wood-derived fiber/BiOBr/AgBr (WFBA) sponge for wastewater treatment. The obtained WFBA sponge reveals favorable mechanical strength at a strain of 60% and 50 cycles of compression tests. In view of the superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity of WFBA sponge, it can be used for separating surfactant-stabilized kerosene-in-water emulsions with oil rejection ration higher than 99.91%, and simultaneously adsorbing organic dyes with removal efficiency >99.99%. Furthermore, the polluted WFBA sponge is capable of realizing dye degradation under Xe lamp, solar light and fluorescent lamp due to its enhanced photocatalytic activity. Thus, the regenerated sponge can take full advantage of functionalities of emulsion separation and dye adsorption, as presented by that the oil rejection ration still keeps as high as 98.23% and removal dye efficiency remained over 99.90% after five cycles of filtration. This study provides a feasible and scalable approach to engineer versatile materials for wastewater treatment.

Preparation of hydrogels based on poplar cellulose and their removal efficiency of Cd(II) from aqueous solutions

Zhang Fengrong,Zhang Cuilan,Teng Jia,Han Dandan,Wu Lishun,Hou Wanguo

View large Download slide View large Download slide Close modal Industrial heavy metal-contaminated wastewater is one of the main water pollution problems. Adsorbents are a promising method for the removal of heavy metal contaminants. Herein, polyaspartic acid/carboxymethyl poplar sawdust hydrogels (PASP/CMPP) and ascorbic acid/carboxymethyl poplar sawdust hydrogels (VC/CMPP) were prepared by aqueous polymerization using alkalized poplar sawdust (CMPP) as the substrate and PASP and vitamin C (VC) as modifiers. The effective results, provided by the characterization analysis of SEM and BET, indicate that the surface of the PASP/CMPP hydrogel has a larger number of loose pores and a larger pore volume than the VC/CMPP hydrogel. The treatment effects of the two hydrogels on simulated wastewater containing Cd(II) were investigated by a batch of experiments. The results showed that PASP/CMPP had a better adsorption effect than VC/CMPP under the same adsorption conditions. Interestingly, the solid concentration effect was found in the process of sorption kinetics and sorption isotherms. The sorption kinetic curves of Cd(II) on PASP/CMPP were well-fitted by the quasi-second-order kinetics under different adsorbent concentrations. The adsorption conforms to Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models. More importantly, PASP/CMPP composites are expected to be used as a new kind of environmental adsorbent for wastewater treatment. Hydrogels of PASP/CMPP were prepared. The hydrogels of PASP/CMPP exhibit enhanced sorption capacities for Cd(II). The hydrogels of PASP/CMPP are potential sorbents for wastewater treatment. The solid concentration effect was found in the process of sorption kinetics and sorption isotherms. The synthesis of PASP/CMPP hydrogels provides a win-win strategy.

Construction and functional effects of a compatible nano-TiO2 interface between wood fiber and polypropylene via adopting chemical polyethyleneimine–(3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane assembly on the fiber surface

Xianzhu Ye,Hua Wang,Kang Zheng,Zhaofeng Wu,Haifeng Zhou,Xingyou Tian

A simple chemical assembly to construct a compatible nano-TiO2-coating on a wood surface has been reported using polyethyleneimine and (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane for recycled wood–polypropylene composites (WPCs). Crystal features, ZETA potential, and FTIR analysis indicated that the assembly was stable and sufficient, which could be verified further using SEM imaging. Via a three-dimensional hydrophobic network in the composite, water absorbance decreased from 2.89 wt% to 0.72 wt%. Ultraviolet and near-infrared resistance were found to be increased for the dispersive nano-network in the composite matrix. In particular, when the assembling nano-interface was 2.0 wt% for the composite, as well as the tensile strength, the elongation at break was enhanced by about 85%. Tg was also enhanced for strong interfacial adhesion and sufficient load transfer. Also, due to the shielding of the nano-network and the coupling aspect of the assembly, the decomposition temperature (Td) of wood and polypropylene were enhanced by 79 °C and 27 °C, respectively.

Bio-based composite phase change material utilizing wood fiber and coconut oil for thermal management in building envelopes

Aizheng Li,Yingying Yang,Yan Ren,Yuan Wan,Weidong Wu,Hua Zhang

Bio-based materials are attracting substantial attention for their eco-friendly attributes within the construction field, where they facilitate energy saving and emissions reduction. However, the performance of it, such as thermal properties, needs to be improved. Fully utilizing bio-based materials, we developed a novel composite phase change material (PCM), A-WF/CO/h-BN, with high thermal storage properties designed for application in building envelopes. It incorporates coconut oil (CO) as the PCM featuring an optimal phase change temperature . Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) was chosen to enhance the thermal conductivity . Acetylated wood fiber (A-WF) was employed as the supporting material. The prepared A-WF/CO/h-BN sample exhibits excellent and rapid heat storage and exothermic capabilities. In the experiment of thermal performance evaluation, the cold end of the A-WF/CO/h-BN sample is cooler than that of the A-WF when both hot ends are heated. Results indicate that the proposed A-WF/CO/h-BN sample can effectively delay the heat transfer and inhibit the temperature rise and fall. For these superior properties, when the A-WF/CO/h-BN sample is applied in building envelopes, it can minimize the heat transfer from the envelope to the interior and inhibit indoor temperature fluctuation. Thus, it can reduce building energy consumption and carbon emissions while achieving indoor thermal comfort.

Resin distribution and mechanical properties of furfurylated Chinese fir wood in relation to furfuryl alcohol concentration

Ye Chen,Zhaohui Chen,Zhuohui Deng,Jie Hu,Wenxuan Liu,Xuelong Liang,Wenting Ren,Xuexia Zhang,Yan Yu,Fei Guo

Furfurylation is a promising wood modification approach, but the reduced wood toughness largely limits its application in structural areas. In this study, the mechanical properties of Chinese fir wood treated with furfuryl alcohol (FA) solutions at varying concentrations (5% to 45%) was investigated, focusing on how the distribution of FA resin across multiple scales influences these properties. The findings highlighted that the mechanical performance of furfurylated wood is strongly dependent on the distribution of FA resin. The inhomogeneous distribution of FA resin in the core and surface layers enhanced the bending strength and stiffness of furfurylated wood. At low FA concentrations (below 25%), FA resin mainly deposited in the wood cell walls, while at higher concentrations, FA resin accumulated in cell lumens with the cell walls nearly saturated, causing a 60% reduction in bending toughness. Remarkably, further resin deposition in cell lumens above 25% FA did not compromise toughness. This reduction in toughness was largely attributed to the FA resin infiltrating the cell walls. For the structural application of furfurylated wood, either restricting resin infiltration into the cell walls or modifying FA resin to mitigate brittleness are proposed, thus achieving an optimal balance between dimensional stability and toughness.

Improving the degree of polymerization of cellulose nanofibers by largely preserving native structure of wood fibers

Jie Zhou,Zhiqiang Fang,Kaihuang Chen,Jinyi Cui,Dongjie Yang,Xueqing Qiu

The degree of polymerization (DP) of cellulose plays an essential role in unlocking the superior mechanical potential of wood cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs). However, severe degradation of cellulose chains during the chemical pulping is a big challenge to obtain CNFs with high DP. In this work, we tend to improve the DP of wood CNFs by significantly preserving the native structure of wood fibers in an industrial method. Wood sticks are first pretreated with hydrothermal treatment to partially remove hemicellulose , thus leading to an increased porous structure that facilitates the penetration of cooking liquid and lignin removal during delignification , and dilute-alkali-sulfate pulping is then employed to obtain wood fibers with highest viscosity average DP (DP V ) of nearly 2400. After that, the as-prepared wood fibers with high DP are separated into CNFs with highest average DP V of 1333. Finally, we demonstrate the potential application of wood CNFs with improved DP V in the fabrication of strong and tough isotropic films and macrofibers.

Preparation and Characterization of Wood Composites for Wood Restoration

Tianyuan Chen,Qichao Ma,Yudong Li,Guoliang Li

Given the widespread use of wood-based materials and that these materials are often damaged, an abundance of materials have been developed to repair and restore wood. Most of these materials treat the binder and filler as a single system; however, there is yet to be a system that has all the desired properties of an ideal wood-repair composite. Aiming for the goal of creating an ideal wood filler, this study proposed a wood-repair composite that combined epoxy resins, polyether amines, and poplar wood fibers. The materials were selected to mimic the hydrophobicity of lotus leaves and the strong adhesion of mussel proteins. The properties of the designed wood composites were characterized by various testing methods. The prepared fillers were then used to repair damaged poplar wood panels. The mechanical properties of the wood sample repaired with the optimal filler formulation reached 97% of those of the undamaged wood. In summary, the wood composites proposed in this study present a new means of repairing wooden relics, exposed outdoor wooden buildings, and household panels.

Functional modification of softwood fiber and its application in natural fiber-based sound-absorbing composite

Yu Sun,Yongjian Xu,Wenjing Li,Xiaopeng Yue

Natural fiber-based sound-absorbing materials have received more and more attention due to the increasingly severe noise pollution. However, the current natural fibers’ sound-absorbing materials often have poor flame-retardant performance and degradability, which limits their further application. In this study, flame-retardant cellulose fiber (FRCF) was prepared by modifying softwood fiber, and a kind of fiber-based sound-absorbing material, natural fiber-based sound-absorbing composite (NFSC), was prepared by replacing glass fiber with FRCF. The results show that the synthesis of FRCF is successful, and the functional groups containing phosphorus and nitrogen introduced into the cellulose side chain can significantly improve the thermal stability of softwood fiber. FRCF is able to bestow initial flame-retardant capability on the NFSC, allowing NFSC to get the V-1 level in vertical burning test with fewer flame retardants, and the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of NFSC can reach 28.5 %. The NFSC with FRCF instead of glass fiber also has better sound absorption performance; its maximum sound absorption coefficient reaches 0.90, and its noise reduction coefficient (NRC) reaches 0.45. This work is expected to provide inspiration for the design and preparation of environmentally friendly natural fiber-based sound-absorbing materials.

Fe3C@Fe decorated carbonized wood Fiber catalyst for organic dyes degradation: Preparation, characterization and mechanism

Yuning Wang,Wenrui Yao,Zehuai Li,Haiyan Tan,Ce Sun,Dingyuan Zheng,Yanhua Zhang

The extensive use of organic dyes has led to significant water pollution. Using lignocellulosic waste as a precursor for catalysts preparation for sewage remediation presents an effective alternative with numerous advantages in sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and environmental compatibility. In this work, wood fiber waste collected from wood processing plants was decorated with Prussian blue (PB) and then annealed to produce carbonized wood fiber catalyst (Fe 3 C@Fe-CB). In the presence of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), the prepared catalyst could achieve over 98.69 % efficiency in degrading methylene blue (MB) solutions (20 mg/L) in 60 min across a pH range of 3 to 11. Electrochemical test and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis respectively verified that electron transfer pathway and radical pathway were the key factors for the degradation of MB. Cyclic degradation tests demonstrated that the degradation efficiency remained above 93.67 % after five recycling experiments. Moreover, the used magnetic catalyst can be easily recycled by magnet. This study proposed a facile and sustainable carbonized wood fiber catalyst decorated by Fe 3 C@Fe-CB, which could realize efficient elimination of organic dyes. Moreover, we offered a novel choice for dyes-polluted water treatment and paving a new route for converting low-value lignocellulosic waste to high-value utilizations.

Immobilization of ferric tannate on wood fibers to functionalize wood fibers/diphenylmethane di-isocyanate composites

Qiuqin Lin,Jiangyuan Wu,Yanglun Yu,Yuxiang Huang,Wenji Yu

Conventional natural fiber-based composites present substantial limitations regarding their dimensional stability, and flame retardancy, among other attributes. Our research focuses on examining and enhancing the properties of multifunctional fiber composites. In the initial phase, tannic acid (TA) was immobilized on wood fibers which absorbed the ferrous irons in the aqueous phase. Finally, the carriers were recycled to prepare composites via compounding with diphenylmethane di-isocyanate. The produced composites exhibited a 28 % improvement in dimensional stability compared with the control sample, while achieving significant enhancements in stiffness, hygroscopicity and flame-retardant properties due to the presence of TA-Fe complexes. Furthermore, the heat release rate and smoke production rate were decreased by 33 % and 77 %, respectively. The highly functional and versatile composites in this research are expected to possess a wide array of household applications.

The interface designing and reinforced features of wood fiber/polypropylene composites: Wood fiber adopting nano-zinc-oxide-coating via ion assembly

Xianzhu Ye,Hua Wang,Kang Zheng,Zhaofeng Wu,Haifeng Zhou,Konghu Tian,Zheng Su,Xingyou Tian

Wood-plastic composites (WPCs) with excellent water resistance, light absorption, mechanical properties , and thermal stability features were fabricated on an assembled nano-interface using cationic polyethyleneimine-nano-ZnO (PEI-ZnO) and anionic sodium polyacrylate-wood (PAAS-wood). The charge grafting, assembly, and dispersive morphology on the wood surface were analyzed by ZETA potentials, SEM images, crystal features, XPS and FTIR spectra. With a three dimensional shielding-assembling nano-network, water absorption of wood-polypropylene composite decreased from 5.20 wt.% to 1.83 wt.%, and the decomposition temperature (Td) of wood and polypropylene were enhanced by 114 °C and 63 °C depending on passing and hindering. The tensile strength and the glass transition temperature (Tg) were enhanced from 20.42 MPa, 11.7 °C to 38.73 MPa, 33.21 °C, respectively, likely due to firmed nano-dispersion, strong interfacial adhesion , and sufficient load transfer. In addition, ultraviolet and near-infrared resistance of the composite were found to be promoted by adopting the assembled nano-interface.

A novel sol-gel strategy for constructing wood fibers and aramid nanofiber nanocomposite with strong, tough and recyclable properties

Tao Liu,Zheng Liu,Zhezhe Zhou,Sheldon Q. Shi,John Tosin Aladejana,Shanshan Gong,Zhen Fang,Jianzhang Li

Recently, biomass-based materials derived from wood processing residues have been developed to resolve the white pollution. However, the poor mechanical strength , weak water resistance, and non-recyclability still limit their practical applications. Aramid nanofiber (ANF) is a promising reinforcement due to the unique structural characteristics and exceptional mechanical properties . Here, a high-performance wood fibers-based nanocomposite was assembled based on chemically-modified wood fiber (CWF) and ANF via a sol-gel strategy with the solvent exchange. The dynamic noncovalent cross-linking with 3D reticular networks between CWF and ANF endow the as-prepared film with high tensile strength of 591.96 ± 11.05 MPa, high toughness of 38.68 ± 2.15 MJ/m 3 , and excellent solvent resistance . Moreover, the CWF-ANF gel can effectively repair the fractured CWF-ANF film under heating and maintain competitive mechanical properties after several dissolution-reconstruction, which shows the fascinating sustainability potential. Simultaneously, the as-prepared film is considered as a strong substrate to advance excellently conductive and anti-counterfeiting composite with double-layered structures. This effective strategy provides a novel pathway to reuse plant waste resources with competitive mechanical properties and high value-added utilization.
