Biodegradable, Strong, and Hydrophobic Regenerated Cellulose Films Enriched with Esterified Lignin Nanoparticles

Rui Tian,Chao Wang,Weikun Jiang,Srinivas Janaswamy,Guihua Yang,Xingxiang Ji,Gaojin Lyu

The scientific community is pursuing significant efforts worldwide to develop environmentally viable film materials from biomass, particularly transparent, high-performance regenerated cellulose (RC) films, to replace traditional plastics. However, the inferior mechanical performance and hydrophilic nature of RC films are generally not suitable for use as a substitute for plastics in practical applications. Herein, lignin homogenization is used to synthesize high-performance composite films. The esterified lignin nanoparticles (ELNPs) with dispersible and binding advantages are prepared through esterification and nanometrization. In the presence of ELNPs, RC films exhibit a higher tensile strength (110.4 MPa), hydrophobic nature (103.6° water contact angle, 36.6% water absorption at 120 min, and 1.127 × 10 −12 g cm cm −2 s −1 Pa −1 water vapor permeability), and exciting optical properties (high visible and low ultraviolet transmittance). The films further display antioxidant activity, oxygen barrier ability, and thermostability. The films completely biodegrade at 12 and 30% soil moisture. Overall, this study offers new insights into lignin valorization and regenerated cellulose composite films as novel bioplastic materials.

Preparation of Lignin-Based Nanoparticles with Excellent Acidic Tolerance as Stabilizer for Pickering Emulsion

Lina Wang,Yue Kang,Weilu Zhang,Jiahao Yang,Haiming Li,Meihong Niu,Yanzhu Guo,Zhiwei Wang

In this work, novel lignin-based nanoparticles (LβNPs) with high acidic tolerance were successfully prepared via electrostatic interaction between β-alanine and lignin nanoparticles. The effects of the mass ratio of lignin nanoparticles to β-alanine and pH value on the morphology and particle sizes of LβNPs were investigated with the aim of obtaining the ideal nanoparticles. The optimized LβNPs were spherical in shape with an average particle size of 41.1 ± 14.5 nm and exhibited outstanding structure stability under high acidic conditions (pH < 4). Subsequently, Pickering emulsions stabilized by LβNPs were prepared using olive oil as the oil phase. Additionally, the effects of pH value, droplet size, morphology, and storage stability on Pickering emulsions were also analyzed. The emulsions displayed excellent stability, and were stable against strongly acidic conditions (pH < 4) after 30 days of storage. The study presented a promising approach to preparing lignin-based nanoparticles with high acidic tolerance (an ideal type of stabilizer to prepare emulsions), and exhibited extremely high potential application values in the fields of drug delivery, food additives, and oily wastewater treatment. Keywords:lignin nanoparticles;β-alanine;Pickering emulsions;acidic tolerance

Fabrication of lignin nanoparticles with adjustable size, antioxidant, antibacterial, and hydrophobic properties by a two-step fractionation

Yuan He,Haichuan Ye,Haichao Li,Guohua Miao,Yucheng Hu,Xianhai Zeng,Tingting You,Feng Xu

Lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) are gaining attention for their renewability and environmental friendliness in advanced nanomaterials. To establish a new sustainable value chain, it is vital to fully utilize lignin resources and thoroughly examine the effects of LNPs size and structure on performance. Herein, a two-step fractionation scheme is engineered via combining sequential organic solvent fractionation and acid precipitation methods to obtain four lignin fractions (denoted as F1, F2, F3, and F4) with low heterogeneity, suitable hydroxyl content and the syringyl (S)/guaiacyl (G) ratio for LNPs fabrication. Up to 88.7 % of alkali lignin was collected to prepare LNPs, and the LNPs showed controllable sizes (100–500 nm, denoted as F1-LNP, F2-LNP, F3-LNP, and F4-LNP). The size gradually decreased from F1-LNP to F4-LNP with increasing specific surface area of LNPs, contributing to superior antibacterial and antioxidant properties. Notably, a higher S/G ratio with enriched p -hydroxyphenyl (H) units resulted in a smaller size of LNPs, possibly resulting from the greater attraction and larger binding energy between S-S and H-H than G-G. This work gives insights into the full utilization of technical lignin to nano-particles to meet specific performance requirements, which will particularly broaden the commercialization and high-value utilization of lignin.

Study on Highly Sensitive Capacitive Pressure Sensor Based on Silk Fibroin-Lignin Nanoparticles Hydrogel

Lei Wang,Yue Wang,Simin Peng,Shuangyan Li,Silong Wu

Silk fibroin (SF) hydrogel has been proven to have excellent applications in the field of pressure sensors, but its sensing performance still needs improvement. A flexible hydrogel prepared from natural macromolecular materials was developed, and lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) were introduced during the preparation of the SF hydrogel. When LNPs account for 3% of SF, the sensing unit of the SF-LNPs3% hydrogel exhibits high stress sensitivity (1.32 kPa–1), fast response speed (<0.1 s), and superior cycle stability (≥8000 cycles). The sensor can detect human motion information, such as finger bending, elbow bending, and pulse signals. When worn at the vocal cord position, it can detect the peak value of the characteristic signal during the wearer speaks. This work demonstrates that the SF-LNPs3% hydrogel has high sensitivity and shows great potential in the field of pressure sensors.

New insight into lignin aggregation guiding efficient synthesis and functionalization of a lignin nanosphere with excellent performance

Liheng Chen,Si-Man Luo,Cong-Min Huo,Yun-Feng Shi,Jun Feng,Jing-Yi Zhu,Wei Xue,Xueqing Qiu

Understanding the molecular mechanism of lignin nanoparticle (LNP) formation will precisely instruct its functionalization, which is of importance for biomass valorization. Trial-and-error approaches for mechanistic research at the molecular level are extremely difficult and resource intensive. Here we have revealed that the intra-molecular interactions of lignin aromatic rings were the internal force driving the aggregation of lignin into LNPs by combining molecular simulation with experimental methods. A quantitative aromatic interaction correlated with the configuration distribution of lignin dimer and LNP yields was also developed for guiding the synthesis and functionalization of LNPs. A cellulose-derived solvent, γ-valerolactone (GVL), was then screened out to sustain lignin molecules’ intramolecular stacking (−5.54 kJ mol−1) into a spherical nucleus for the growth of a uniform and stable lignin nanosphere during solvent shifting. With the assistance of the LNP formation mechanism, lignin could successfully stabilize in situ generated gold nanoparticles with excellent photothermal performance during the production of LNPs in a GVL/water solution. The newly proposed mechanism will provide an important theoretical basis for upgrading lignin to value-added biomaterials in a green and facile pathway.

High Purity and Low Molecular Weight Lignin Nano-Particles Extracted from Acid-Assisted MIBK Pretreatment

Qilin Zhang,Haichao Li,Zongwei Guo,Feng Xu

A simple and economical biorefinery method, organosolv methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) pretreatment assisted by Lewis acid ferric trichloride hydrolysis, was proposed for fractionating the lignin from extractive-freeEucalyptuspowder at the nanoscale, accompanied by another product furfural, derived from hemicellulose. Under the conditions (180 °C, 1 h) optimized based on the best yield of furfural, 40.13% of the acid-insoluble lignin (AIL) could be obtained with a high purity of 100%, a low molecular weight of 767 (Mn) and improved thermostability. The extracted lignin was characterized by its chemical structure, thermostability, homogeneity, molecular weight, and morphology as compared with milled wood lignin (MWL). The results showed significant variations in chemical structures of the extracted lignin during the pretreatment. Specifically, the aryl ether linkage and phenylcoumarans were broken severely while the resinols were more resistant. The G-type lignin was more sensitive to degradation than the S-type, and after the pretreatment, H-type lignin was formed, indicating the occurrence of a demethoxylation reaction at high temperature. Moreover, the lignin nano-particles were identified visually by AFM and TEM images. The dynamic light scattering (DLS) showed that the average diameter of the measured samples was 131.8 nm, with the polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.149. The MIBK-lignin nano-particles prepared in our laboratory exhibit high potentials in producing high functional and valuable materials for the application in wide fields. Keywords:lignin nano-particles;organosolv pretreatment;Eucalyptuswood;biomass;biorefinery

Core flood and wettability alteration investigation of lignin nanoparticles in the presence of salts for enhanced oil recovery

Jiang Yang,Shuo Wang,Ziwei Wang,Hailing Liu,Erlong Yang,Hao Chen

Oil remains the most important energy sources and chemical raw materials. Efficient extraction of hydrocarbons using ecofriendly chemicals is essential for sustainable development. Lignin, a natural, abundant, and green material, shows great potential for such applications. Lignin nanoparticles (LNPs), with their high specific area, are effective emulsion stabilizers and hold promise for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). In this study, LNPs approximately 100 nm in diameter were prepared using an eco-friendly anti-solvent precipitation process from an aqueous alkali lignin solution, with hydrochloride acid serving as the anti-solvent. The physical chemical properties of the LNPs were evaluated. including wettability alternation, zeta potential, interfacial tension, emulsion stability. To assess their applicability for oil recovery, experiments were conducted to investigate crude oil removal/washing from silica glass surface and core flooding using a 0.05% LNPs nanofluid on crude oil saturated core samples. The results showed that LNPs achieved excellent oil removal/washing (91%) from silica surfaces, primarily due to the alteration of wettability of surfaces. Moreover, tertiary flooding with LNPs recovered up to 14% additional residual oil from core samples. Reduced injection pressure was also observed in lower permeability cores. This research provides new insights into the application of the eco-friendly lignin nanomaterial for enhanced oil recovery, offering a sustainable solution for the oil industry.

Efficient binary diol-based deep eutectic solvent pretreatment for enhancing enzymatic saccharification and lignin fractionation from eucalyptus

Yulu He,Ruojin Shen,Lupeng Shao,Chao Wang,Guihua Yang,Feng Xu

An innovative binary biol-based deep eutectic solvent (DES), specifically ethylamine hydrochloride-ethylene glycol (EaCl-EG), was developed for efficient pretreatment of eucalyptus biomass. This DES exhibited superior performance in achieving high delignification (85.0%) and xylan removal (80.0%), while preserving a significant amount of cellulose (94.5%) compared to choline chloride-based DES. Notably, the pretreated eucalyptus residues showed a remarkable glucose yield of over 92.5%, representing a substantial enhancement of up to 15 times compared to untreated eucalyptus. Furthermore, the pretreated liquor yielded high-purity lignin with a yield of 97.8%, characterized by well-preserved β-O-4 structure and nanoscale dimensions. These lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) were subsequently self-assembled into lignin nanobottles (LNBs), adding further value to the pretreatment process. The proposed novel binary EaCl-EG DES presented great potential as an efficient pretreatment solvent for future biomass fractionation processes.

Fabrication of uniform lignin nanoparticles with tunable size for potential wound healing application

Boyu Du,Wanjing Li,Yating Bai,Zheng Pan,Qingyu Wang,Xing Wang,Hui Ding,Gaojin Lv,Jinghui Zhou

The construction of lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) with both lignin properties and nanomaterial properties through controlling the morphologies and structures of lignin is one of the effective ways to realize its application in the field of biomedicine. Firstly, the morphology and chemical structure of LNPs were studied in detailed. The results showed that the chemical structural characteristics of LNPs had not changed significantly and its morphology was more regular shape and narrower size distribution (50–350 nm). Besides, LNPs also exhibited excellent water dispersion stability and high negative zeta potential . Subsequently, LNPs as wound dressings had good antioxidant property, excellent adsorption capacity of protein, outstanding bactericidal activity and remarkable biocompatibility , suggesting that LNPs did not interfere with cell proliferation during wound healing . Finally, the in vivo results of mouse wounds further illustrated that treatment of wounded skin wounds with LNPs enhanced its effective healing. After 15 days, as compared with the untreated control and original lignin (OL) groups, the wounds treated of LNPs was completely closed and granulation tissue formation was advanced. Overall, this study can be a good method for high-value applications of LNPs, and highlighting the advantages of using lignin as medical adjuvant nanomaterials to accelerate wound healing.

Improved antioxidant activity of pretreated lignin nanoparticles: Evaluation and self-assembly

Mingfu Li,Yingchuan Zhang,Hongli Ma,Qida Peng,Douyong Min,Pingjun Zhang,Liqun Jiang

Lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) have gained significant attention for their potential as natural antioxidants . This study investigated the effect of various pretreatment methods on the lignin structure and subsequent antioxidant activity of LNPs. Among four pretreated LNPs, hydrothermal LNPs exhibited the highest antioxidant activity , surpassing unpretreated, acid-pretreated and kraft LNPs, with an impressive efficacy of 91.6%. The relationship between LNPs' structure and antioxidant activity was revealed by 2D heteronuclear singular quantum correlation ( 1 H 13 C HSQC) and 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). 1 H 13 C HSQC suggested the cleavage of β-O-4 ether bonds, as well as a decrease in ferulic acid and p -coumaric acid, which directly influenced the antioxidant activity of LNPs. 31 P NMR demonstrated a positive correlation between the total hydroxyl group content and the antioxidant activity . Besides, an isothermal kinetic model for scavenging free radicals was established based on Langmuir kinetic model instead of Freundlich model. Moreover, multilayer LNPs, based on layer-by-layer self-assembly, were prepared and exhibited remarkable antioxidant activity of 95.8%. More importantly, when blended with pure cosmetic cream , the multilayer LNPs maintained antioxidant activity of 86.7%. These finding may promote the practical applications of biomolecules, e.g. lignin additives in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

Lignin Nanoparticles: Promising Sustainable Building Blocks of Photoluminescent and Haze Films for Improving Efficiency of Solar Cells

Xue Wang,Huanxin Guo,Zonghao Lu,Xue Liu,Xiongfei Luo,Shujun Li,Shouxin Liu,Jian Li,Yongzhen Wu,Zhijun Chen

Films with the capacity for photoluminescence and haze, which can convert UV to visible light and enhance light management, are of great importance for optoelectronic devices. Here, taking advantage of the inherent fluorescence and self-assembly properties of lignin, we have developed a sustainable lignin-derived multifunctional dopant (L-MS-NPs) for fabricating optical films with haze, fluorescence, and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) together with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The optical films are used to improve the light-harvesting efficiency of solar cells. Specifically, attributed to the robust morphology in the film matrix, L-MS-NPs cause a rough morphology in the surface of an L-MS-NPs/PVA composite film, which eventually triggers the great optical haze. Additionally, L-MS-NPs inherit fluorescence properties from lignin and show fluorescence emission when embed in the film matrix. Moreover, the PVA film matrix can stabilize the excited triplet state, which finally induces RTP of L-MS-NPs. The combined haze, fluorescence, and RTP properties of the L-MS-NPs/PVA composite film enhances the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of dye-sensitized solar cells from ∼3.9 to ∼4.1%.

Lignin nanoparticle/MXene-based conductive hydrogel with mechanical robustness and strain-sensitivity property via rapid self-gelation process towards flexible sensor

Yu-Qin Yang,Xiao-Wen Pang,Zi-Fan Zeng,Zhi-Chao Xu,Yu-Qing Qin,Li-Xiu Gong,Haichang Ding,Jinfeng Dai,Shi-Neng Li

Conductive hydrogels have been showcased with substantial potential for soft wearable devices. However, the tedious preparation process and poor trade-off among overall properties, i.e., mechanical and sensing performance, severely limits flexibility of electronics' applications. Herein, we have developed a rapid self-gelation system for achieving high-performance conductive hydrogel within several minutes at ambient condition. The rapid gelation mechanism is attributed to the hydroxyl radical species generated with the help of lignin nanoparticle-M n+1 (Ag + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Al 3+ and Fe 3+ ) based on reversible redox reaction and MXene activization effect. By adjusting the material components, the cross-linked polymer network can be highly strengthened by multiple physical interactions and nano-reinforcement, strongly supporting the mechanical performance. Comparatively, Fe 3+ -based conductive hydrogel displays integrated merits of mechanical robustness, high stretchability and good electrical conductivity. Meanwhile, due to excellent mechanical and electrical performance, such hydrogel-based sensor possesses good sensing performance, i.e., high sensitivity (maximum GF: 1.08), cyclic reliability and wide work window (0–860 %), displaying promising application in strain-induced detection. Our sensors also produce stable and reliable signal output for signature/vocal recognition. Apparently, the strategy developed herein sets up an innovative concept for highly-efficient green fabricating advanced hydrogel materials for emerging wearable electronics.
