Heavy metal lead is a typical widespread potentially toxic element (PET) contamination due to their extensive and wide applications in industrial processes. The development of cost-effective methods for preventing potentially toxic element lead residues from soil into food is thus highly desirable. A new type of humic acid-based remediation material (HA/WV) incorporating humic acid salt (HA), biochar powder (BC), and wood vinegar (WV), which is a cheap and environmentally friendly industrial by-product from charcoal processing, was prepared and evaluated. The results showed that 0.10 g remediation material HA/WV with a mass ratio of 1:1 was added to 1 kg surface soil of 0–20 cm from agricultural land contaminated by 300 mg Pb 2+ , the reduction ratio of available Pb in soil can reach 61.4%. Especially, wood vinegar can enhance the reduction ratio of available Pb by at least 14.7% over without wood vinegar. Furthermore, according to the analysis of adsorption interaction and the electrostatic attraction between Pb(II) and oxygen-containing functional groups on HA/WV are the dominant mechanisms responsible for Pb(II) sorption. The wood vinegar liquid can improve the oxygen-containing group in HA/WV, which can enhance the complexation of remediation materials and Pb(II) ion.

The potential for toxic elements to contaminate soil has been extensively studied. Therefore, the development of cost-effective methods and materials to prevent toxic element residues in the soil from entering the food chain is of great significance. Industrial and agricultural wastes such as wood vinegar (WV), sodium humate (NaHA) and biochar (BC) were used as raw materials in this study. HA was obtained by acidizing NaHA with WV and then loaded onto BC, which successfully prepared a highly efficient modification agent for nickel-contaminated soil, namely biochar-humic acid material (BC-HA). The characteristics and parameters of BC-HA were obtained by FTIR, SEM, EDS, BET and XPS. The chemisorption of Ni(II) ions by BC-HA conforms to the quasi-second-order kinetic model. Ni(II) ions are distributed on the heterogeneous surface of BC-HA by multimolecular layer adsorption, which accords with the Freundlich isotherm model. WV promotes better binding of HA and BC by introducing more active sites, thus increasing the adsorption capacity of Ni(II) ions on BC-HA. Ni(II) ions in soil are anchored to BC-HA by physical and chemical adsorption, electrostatic interaction, ion exchange and synergy.

The major antibacterial components in wood vinegar was determined and novel microencapsulation of wood vinegar extract was successfully prepared to protect it from environmental stress. Three major fractions, including Fr.1 (mainly phenol and 2-methoxyphenol), Fr.2 (largely 2,6-dimethoxyphenol), and Fr.3 (mostly 3-methyl-1,2-cyclopentanedione), were extracted from wood vinegar by chromatography. Antibacterial activity was evaluated by serial dilution against eight pathogens, including an antibiotic-resistant strain. The minimum inhibition concentration were ranging in 1.56–12.50 μL/mL and 0.78–6.25 μL/mL, respectively, for Fr.1 and Fr.2, which shows that wood vinegar extract exhibits a broad antibacterial spectrum. To improve the stability of wood vinegar extract and make it easier to store, for the first time wood vinegar extract was encapsulated, alginate and chitosan were used as wall materials for the encapsulation using an ionic gelation method. The agar diffusion results showed that the microcapsules still exhibited excellent antibacterial action. The stability of the phenols in microcapsules was improved effectively and in vitro simulation digestion showed a more pronounced release in intestine. The application feasibility of wood vinegar extract was evident and real potential to produce natural antibacterial agents, with real possibility to be used in food and pharmaceutical industries.

To increase the added value and commercialization of wood vinegar (WV), a new method for comprehensive utilization of WV was developed. The primary distillation, liquid–liquid extraction and secondary distillation were used to isolate the different active fractions from WV in the new route. The antioxidant activities of all the fractions were expressed as vitamin C equivalent antioxidant capacities in mg/L using 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl scavenging assay, and the antimicrobial activities against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) in vitro were represented by the absorbance at a wavelength of 600 nm. The results demonstrated that the isolation of the antioxidants (phenolic compounds) from the residue obtained from primary distillation was satisfactory when the EtOAc/ n -hexane (7/3, v/v) was used as extraction solvent and pH value was 4. Acetic acid has inhibition effect on the antioxidant activities of phenolic compounds. The fraction enriched with acetic acid exhibited high antimicrobial activity. Considering the low environmental risk of WV, the findings suggest that WV is potentially useful for the developments of antioxidant and antimicrobial agents in the field of medicine or food preservation and safety.

Carbon sources as energy sources and electron donors are essential for the nitrogen removal efficiencies of heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification (HNAD) process. However, conventional carbon sources from the chemical industry face issues of low stability of biological treatment systems and increased indirect carbon emissions in practical applications. Encouragingly, wood vinegar, a by-product of biomass pyrolysis process, promises to address these concerns. Herein, we investigated the potential of wood vinegar for green composite carbon source in HNAD process from multiple perspectives by establishing different microcosms. Regular monitoring results showed that wood vinegar-fed microcosms had the optimal cost-effectiveness with a C/N ratio of 7, and total nitrogen and COD removal efficiencies of up to 85.0 % and 93.4 % respectively. Furthermore, wood vinegar significantly improved the species diversity and optimized the microbial community structure compared to traditional carbon sources, strengthening the stability and resistance of the microcosm. Meanwhile, the enrichment analysis of key genes and enzymes indicated that both carbon and nitrogen metabolism were enhanced obviously, and the wood vinegar as a composite carbon source was expected to overcome the defects of traditional carbon sources, better balance the nitrification and denitrification capabilities. Importantly, the introduction of wood vinegar does not present a risk of secondary contamination and contributes to carbon reduction in the water treatment field. All indications are that wood vinegar as a green composite carbon sources can enhance wastewater treatment system stability and efficiency, and provide a viable strategy for promoting more sustainable wastewater management.
